This review is for Nancy. Hi Nancy!
When I used to get my hair relaxed I went from place to place in search of the perfect pampering experience. I rank Nancy as one of the better stylists in this regard.
I've been twice and while I don't remember the names of those that actually blew out my hair (I know one was a very friendly bald-ish man who had an almost unearthly way with a flat iron and some aveda light elements serum and the other was a brunette female who was known for color).
I doubt I'll be relaxed again but if I feel like getting a blow out I might go here for old time sake.
They used to have a special where the next appointment you booked after your current appointment was discounted too!
Harmonie called me today to let me know that she no longer works at Ted Gibson and would like my email to add to her client list.
I told Harmonie to take her spam and go kick rocks.

I paid $125 for a haircut expecting a miracle, what I got was a good cut.
FYI: my hairdresser was a… Read more »
Where to begin??? I can't express how in love I am with my stylist (Devin) and my colorist (Melissa). I could sing their praises day in and day out. Melissa hits the color spot on each time, and gets it close to my natural color (which is what I want) so that I can spend a little extra time between color sessions than most people. Devin is the most precise stylist I've ever experienced. He's a perfectionist when it comes to his cuts! He really puts his heart into his work and it shows.
I have never gotten so many compliments on my hair as when I started going to Ted Gibson! All of the assistants are so kind, and it's nice to see Ted himself pop up around the salon (he's been around every time I've been in.)
It's definitely a pricey encounter, BUT very very well worth it. Even if you can't afford this as your regular salon I would highly recommend coming every 6 months, and in between those cuts go to a more cost effective salon for yourself for shape ups. They're definitely worth my investment!
Great positive atmosphere with an exceptional talented team of stylists and colorists. My first experience was with Devin, and he combines versatility and movement with his cuts. My hair was in extremely bad shape, and after a whole summer's worth of abuse, I needed to get out of my hair rut. He charges $95, and it is abs. freaking worth it. He is a great listener and really incorporates your individual style into a great cut.
James is wonderful for coloring hair. Thanks to him, I have a rich chocolate brown color that looks as if it's from a gleaming spread of the John Frieda Brown Shampoo collection.
Best thing about Ted Gibson- You get people who are very talented and experienced. They work in effort with YOU to create a look that will surely impress and responsive to compliments. Amazing products too, they smell great.
All I can say is: GO TO LIAM! It should be his salon...not Ted's! Wow! He knows how to transform someone from the "everyday boring look" to "Hi! look at me...I'm a completely new person!" Liam takes him time & really knows what he's doing..& it shows! I didn't realize how many compliments a person can get until I got my hair cut by him. You know a hairstylist did an AMAZING job when before you used to never look at yourself in the mirror & now you can't stop looking at yourself! Liam is an astonishing artist & everyone should truly experience his work at least once!
Holy razorblades, Batman! Haircuts here are fun, and the staff is definitely chill. First off, I look like I'm 15 -- 18 on a good day -- and rolling in there in jeans does not help matters. Even so, they were all super friendly and did not look down their noses at my definitely less-than-chichi duds. (Apologies if I looked scrubby, but when you're rocking the business casual 5x/week, you need to wear jeans on the weekends. STAT.)
Anyway, Rachel did an amazing job on my hair. I couldn't believe how light yet full it felt afterwards. I've got the weirdest Asian hair imaginable (a lot of fine and wavy hair), and thankfully she actually FELT it and took a GOOD look at it and figured that out. I hate "doing" hair, too, so she took that into account in giving me my fabulous cut. Finally, she kicked serious butt using the straight razor. Add to all that the fact that they use Aveda products and don't really PUSH the products mid-services, and I was a happy camper. I recommended it to my friend, and she is now so addicted that she ONLY gets her hair cut by Rachel (and makes special NYC trips to do it!).
I mean, c'mon, people...you could take my word for it or you could take Angelina Jolie's. ;) Either way, this salon comes highly recommended!
I'm editing my previous review because Ted Gibson raised their prices yet again, and honestly, you can get a beautiful cut & color for a third of the price somewhere else. Also doesn't help that my two favorite stylists (Danielle and Rachel) left. I've gone back to my original mainstay-- Soon Beauty Lab West, and my hair (and wallet) have never been happier.
Pros: convenient location, friendly staff, luxury perks like hand massages and drinks while you wait (though delivery of such is inconsistent), overall good haircuts.
Cons: Pushy product placement, unreasonably expensive, bad blowouts, closed Sundays.
I admit I have been getting my hair cut by Ted Gibson, Jason Backe or one of the expert stylists at Ted Gibson for years and to that end and a testament to their skill and all, I have been getting my hair cut and styled by them for YEARS! (Since the 90's when they worked at Aveda on Broadway and even in 2000 when I had to go platinum for a job.)
Ted is now stylist to the stars and does photo shoots and fashion shows around the world, but still finds lots of time to be in the salon and do wonders for clients in NYC. Jason is an amazing colorist (he stopped cutting pretty much when they opened the salon) and a cool guy and together they have assembled quite a solid team.
Everyone at Ted Gibson is supremely friendly and they treat you very well with hand and scalp massages, coffee, tea or water with lemon and of course great work on your hair. I currently have been seeing Rachel and she rocks and always does me right.
If you have a little money to put to it and want to be treated like a king, queen, fashion model and look great when it is all done check out to Ted Gibson.
I'm boring...I ain't gonna lie. So much so that the ain't and the gonna are causing me to hyperventilate. But for this review I'm living on the edge.
Here's the deal...I'm not a big fan of change, at least not when it comes to my hair. I've got straight hair and every time I try to get some layers it just looks bad. So stupid me I keep it all one length - boring! I knew there was a better cut out there for me, but I couldn't find it with my current hairdresser and believe me I tried. After 5 years I made the painful decision to leave. Honestly, I knew after 3 years it wasn't going to work but like any relationship I clung on to the shred of hope for a couple years too many.
I thought I was going to enter this stuffy salon (usually a bit more expensive equals stuffy and snobby). However, from the moment I booked the appointment until got back on the elevator everyone was nice, normal and fun.
Like another reviewer said Danielle is excellent. My hair is so shiny and natural looking and with blond that's sometimes tricky. Rachel does my cut and by God I've never gotten layers that actually fall correctly with my boring straight hair.
I would def, def recommend this salon and Danielle and Rachel to everyone. Sure it's a bit pricey, but as long as you don't have Ted Gibson himself cut your hair you'll be ok. And for the fun conversation and extremely attentive service it is definitely worth the money.
I took a leap of faith changing stylists and salons but Audrey's review swayed my cynicism about finding a stylist that understood how to cut Asian hair so I booked an appointment with Rachel during the middle of the week and got an early 9:30AM appointment that following Saturday.
So, I woke up psyched and ready for new hairstyle! Right as I was about to enter the salon at 9:30AM, I received a call from the receptionist that Rachel was running 20 minutes late. I thought fine, no big deal...I'll get some coffee and catch up on my celebrity gossip mags. After I slipped into my robe, I noticed the space and loved how it was designed from the minimalist yet modern decor to the classy floral centerpieces with sprawling cherry blossom branches. It was a nice atmosphere with upscale clientele, but not overly pretentious. After the twenty minutes were up, I waited and waited longer....with serious considerations of walking out.
Finally, at about 10:45, another stylist came over to inform me there was a mix up with the scheduling and they would get started on my shampoo. I was so irritated, why could they not have told me the truth to begin with? I couldn't even enjoy the scalp massage I received before I got my hair washed. While I sat there dripping wet, Rachel came over to greet me and asked me what we were doing with my hair. She immediately got to work and started clipping and razoring my heavy, rounded bob to one that was angled, light, textured, modern and sophisticated. My mood started to shift for the better. The cut was completely what I wanted and styled perfectly for my birthday soiree that evening.
I am thrilled with the cut Rachel gave me and had it not been for the long wait and lack of communication on the receptionist part, I would have given this salon 5 stars. Nevertheless, they took about $15 dollars off the cut and apologized afterward.
Have used them for about a year before switching to Louis Licari.
They are OK. I went there for highlights and always came out a bit more red then I wanted (I have blond highlights). However, prices, discounts and promotions are def nice. very professional and nice.
Ok - so I have officially grown out my hair relaxer - FREEEDOOOOOOMMMMMM!!! Anyone who has achieved this state knows what I am talking about. Anywho, Eugene, my hair dresser totally helped with the best cuts and trims, never too much and just right. Now that I am all natural I of course started highlighting - go figure. Danielle does the color and she is awesome. I highly recommend them and they are wonderful with all hair textures. The only downfall, they are pricey.
When I moved back from Montreal it was one salon after another, one disaster after the next. One of my coworkers recommended Ted Gibson and after a year of horror stories I finally found a place I can settle into. Rachel is AMAZING. But so are most of the other stylists, since half my department goes there and they all go to different ones. I haven't heard a complaint yet! Bonus? If you book an appointment for Mondays cuts are only $50 and done by "stylists in training".
so if i am going to pay $250 for a color (not highlights, just color), I'm hoping to be pretty excited. The one thing I asked for, don't make the color red. We'll, it turned out brown, but more redish. The colorist was nice and the color was pretty but not worth the money or time spent there. I probably could have gotten the same color at home, given that I just wanted a simple brown. The difficulty with lightening dark hair is keeping the color cool and keeping the red and orange at bay. That's why i'll pay a lot and spend so much time sitting in a salon. If you can't do that well, then there isn't much value add.
i was terrified of trying a new salon when i first moved to new york but the team at ted gibson are just phenomenal. they are all super friendly and so talented. i always come out looking and feeling fabulous. you really get what you pay for. jeanine is my colorist and eugene is my stylist and they're (of course) wonderful. i've had my hair done by another one of their stylists and i'm confident that anyone under the care of any of the staff will be impressed by the results of their work.
Giulia gave me the best haircut I have ever had! I have thick, overwhelming curly hair, the kind that makes hairsylists groan and then proceed to ruin my hair as they chop. Giulia listened to what I wanted and then gave me an amazing haircut. She doesn't cut by a system. She listens to what a customer wants and then works with her/his hair. I have been to the curly hair places and Giulia beats them hands down! I have also seen straight and wavy haired people leave her chair looking great and smiling. She is also a nice person to spend an hour with. Since stylists move around and can be hard to keep track of, here is her e-mail: Giulia206@hotmail.com
UPDATE: Giulia did leave and so did a lot of the other stylists--and me. I last went a month ago, needed a root touch up. Hundreds of dollars and lots of attitude later, I decided I had enough. Like so many places that start out great, they got greedy and sloppy. I know I have a lot of hair; but the woman who washed it out, left me with a knotted mess that I had to comb out myself. The colorist, Jason himself, got a ton of dye on my face, left it on too long and then said my skin "was thirsty" when it didn't come off. I wound up going to the staff in the supply room to ask for more dye solvent so I could work to take it off myself. A few weeks later I pulled my hair back in a braid and a friend pointed out that I had distinct stripes from where he had previously highlighted. I asked around and found a local place in Bklyn--less than a third of the price--really, less than a third--and I have been getting compliments ever since. I still swear by Giulia. She recently came to my house and gave me an amazing cut!
Rachel has moved to Arrojo Studios in Soho 2122427786 and she has a new low price!
