Best frozen custard evah!!!!! (Yes that is my Oprah imitation) I am saying this as someone who has frequented Wisconsin's famed custard stands and as a non native of St Louis so there.

My sister intro-ed me shortly after moving to St Lou. For those of you not in the know, Ted Drewes is the famous home of the concrete aka crete, a custard mixture so thick they serve it to you upside down.

She is a fan of the cretes where they stick in a whole piece of pie (her fave is pumpkin) into your creation and mix it into bliss. I am a devotee of the fox treat crete with hot fudge, raspberries and macadamia nuts. I also like the Hawaiian crete with pineapple, banana, coconut and macadamia nuts. A plain chocolate chip crete or a chocolate shake will do in a pinch.

I know her kids are all born and bred Ted Drewes addicts and frankly it makes me proud.

Whenever I am in town this is a must stop. You are crazy if you live nearby and never stop in.

I really couldn't believe that a day in November at 9pm at night there were about 25-30 people outside this obvious locally beloved establishment.

Then, I had "The Great Pumpkin" concrete. Now I know the reason why.

In short, it was a loving spoonful in every bite. It was a delicious pumpkin custard with chunks of pie in it topped with lots of whipped cream. My sister got "The Big Apple" and was just as amazing except it was apple pie flavored.

I would probably freeze my ass off and stand in line like I'm sure the locals do for a taste for more of this in the dead of winter. To the people of St. Louis, you all are so lucky... but I'm pretty sure you all knew that already!

HOLY SMOKES!

actual pumpkin pie mixed in with the frozen custard......are you kidding me? Why hasn't this become a huge sweep the nation treat.

The best part was the chunks of pie crust. Like finding a diamond inside another diamond. Super yummy.

For the first semester of my freshman year of college, I attended Washington University in St. Louis. I was very excited to give a new city a try, and St. Louis had a lot going for it, minus one major aspect-yup, you guessed it, FROYO!!! Born and raised in L.A., I am extremely spoiled in the froyo department. Pinkberry-check, old school 80's froyo joints, check (how it all started!). Basically any type of froyo-old and new-was at my fingertips. Now along with giving up my family, friends, and spacious bedroom, I was giving up my daily (yes, daily) froyo fix.

Of course I did some serious recon before migrating eastward, and was not too optimistic about the results. I discovered the Midwest's version of froyo was the historic treat called frozen custard, and in St. Louis, specifically from Ted Drewes. According to handy Wikipedia, frozen custard is a cold dessert similar to ice cream, made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. It typically contains 10% butterfat and 1.4% egg yolk. I unfortunately never got the blessed opportunity to try fresh frozen custard, but I did sample some in a pre-packed container after Wash U's opening ceremony. I tried the vanilla, sans toppings (but according to their websites they have flavors ranging from Tart Cherry to Pistachio, and a concoction called a concrete, for which they blend in toppings and custard and freeze the mixture).

The vanilla was good (albeit quite caloric), but not stellar in my eyes. I hear some Midwesterners swear by it, but I guess it's just not my style (I'm more of a classic 80's froyo girl-think Penguins or Golden Spoon-esque). But then again, it was very creamy and dense, and I do highly encourage you guys to try it fresh from the stand if you every find yourselves in the STL.

OK... It is a total SIN that we do not have anything close to this in California or anywhere else. My husband and I were in St. Louis to enjoy the Packers vs. Rams game and to have a mini vacation away from it all.... Until we found Ted Drewes.

Seriously....THE BEST PART OF OUR TRIP!  And, THE BEST DESSERT I HAVE HAD IN MY LIFE! The concretes are to die for. I got the great pumpkin- tastes like a pumpkin pie-melt in your mouth fantasy. Seriously GOOD STUFF! We went back for 3 nights in a row trying different flavors. The Big Apple was one of our favorites. Tasted like good ole apple pie with crust, ice cream, whipped cream the whole works. I cannot tell you how hard I fell for Ted Drewes. My husband and I are IN LOVE!

We will definitely make a trip back out just for the frozen custards. Why, Why ,Why must I have withdrawals?!? Believe me, once you try this... you will cry. And you will have dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner just because. You may even buy the T-Shirts like we did. The best dessert on the planet.

Nom Nom Nom..Frozen Custard!!!! That was all we could think about after walking in the hot sun. In addition, the frozen custard was one of the best lunches during our road trip :)

The service at this place is awesome! We were frozen custard newbies and didn't know what anything was on the menu. Our cashier cheerfully explained the flavors and the difference between the sundae and the concrete. A+ service.

I had the regular pistachio concrete. Wheee.. the custard was sweet and creamy. I love the pistachio mixed into the vanilla custard. My fiance had the regular Tedad's concrete as it came with oatmeal cookie. Oh goodness. It was amazing! The cherry sundae was pretty good too.

Forget all of the froyo places back at home. Bring in the frozen custard!

I know peopole really love this place and it's a cardinal sin to NOT like Ted Drewes...however, I've had custard before and this is not custard.  Real custard is smooth, silky, rich, delicious....fake custard is milky and not anything special. I mean, don't get me wrong,  I had the oreo/heath mixture and I still ate it, but it just wasn't custard.  Wisconsin has real custard, Missouri does not.

I love frozen custard!  We were taking a Route 66 roadtrip and had to hit this classic stop along the route. I loved it, so many good flavors and combinations. Also, loved that the original design and cool 50's neon signage is still there.  Totally crowded all the time, and well worth the wait!

I tried a banana chocolate chip cookie dough blend and it was really good!

TO DIE FOR!!! Amazing and delicious just doesn't sound meaningful enough in comparison to the taste of this frozen custard!!

Had my first Ted Drewes early this summer while visiting STL. And it was an addiction at first bite. We got our frozen custard dose DAILY when we were in St Louis!!

Sorry but I have to stop yelping about Ted Drewes now. It's just too sad that California doesn't have anything even remotely close to it.... and I'm drooling thinking about it, and I'm craving it so bad!!!!

Go to Ted's.  Order a chocolate concrete.  Add almonds.  This is all you need to know.

We hit this place MULTIPLE TIMES every time we go to Saint Louis.  You have to love a joint where you can see them selling Christmas trees while lines and lines of people order frozen custard in below-freezing weather.  Hilarious.  And we happily joined in The Movement!

My dad's cousin, a local, won't eat here because they say this is where the YIPPIES hang out.  He is either stuck in the sixties or needs Spell Check attached to his head.

Ignore him, rush here, and holler YIPPIE!  Homophones aside, you'll soon know why.

Yum yum yum! I've only been twice, but it's enough to stick in my memory and cause me to argue for a visit every time I'm in town. Culpepper's for dinner, then Ted Drewes for dessert - I'm a happy man. I've never seen them without lines 6 deep, and that's with 6 or 8 windows operating! Still, they move quickly and prices are amazingly good, so it's definitely worth it. Ted Drewes has been a local fixture for so long that you'll see 3 generations of people hanging around eating and chatting - there's no seating, so it's either standing or sitting on the hood/trunk of your car. (With that many people milling around parking can be challenging.)

The frozen custard itself is amazing. Delicious and as smooth and rich as the highest-quality ice cream you've ever had. A large range of excellent toppings and mix-ins are available. I thought my tart cherry and hot fudge ("Cardinal Sin") was good until I tried my dad's raspberry; if he hadn't turned his back on me and walked away (!) after my one bite, he might not have gotten any more. ("We could share it, we could!") I guess ol' Dad's not so dumb after all...

I know it's heresy for a lifelong St. Louis resident to say so, but Ted Drewes isn't my favorite place to get a frozen dessert.  I suspect that this is a matter of personal preference, since frozen custard is made with eggs, so it doesn't have the same clean dairy taste as regular ice cream.

Maybe my preference arises from the fact that when I was little, my mother would take my brother and I to Dairy Queen every Sunday after church, provided we behaved.  (And we always did.)  I don't know.

Regardless, Ted Drewes has really good prices, really good service, and pretty good frozen custard with lots of options for toppings.  (Uhh, is it technically a "topping" if it's mixed in?)  I'm partial to their peanut butter cup-and-banana "All Shook Up" concrete or actual-apple-pie-mixed-in Apple Pie concrete, but there are lots of good options.

Although the concretes are thick enough to hold upside down when they make them (and many of the employees still do that before handing them to you) they do melt pretty rapidly.  If you're not going to eat your frozen custard there, be sure to ask for dry ice which they will happily provide for you.

Dogs are welcome to come with you, and they'll sell you a "Doggie Dish" if you like, which is a small scoop of frozen custard in a bowl large enough for the dog to easily lick out of.

Also, if you show up on your wedding day, they'll give everyone in your party free frozen custard... if you're not afraid to eat it in a tuxedo or dress.

Lastly, all of the comparisons to DQ's Blizzard are somewhat appropriate: the Blizzard was created in the 1980s by a Dairy Queen franchise owner in St. Louis.  I wonder where he got the idea?

I thought this was pretty awesome. I got a concrete with marshmallows and Reese's peanut butter cups. Sort of like a DQ blizzard, only better and thicker. And yeah, like the picture depicted on the T-shirts worn by employees (which I also bought -- I know, I'm such a tourist), you can in fact hold it upside down and it won't come out of the cup.

However, what blew me away was the line on a Friday night. There must have been 100 people waiting at the handful of windows. It was just a sea of people. The parking lot was packed. Cars kept pulling in. And everywhere you looked, people were mulling around in groups eating their frozen custard. It was like people were waiting for a drive-in movie, or a ballgame or a concert at the Warfield in SF, not frozen custard.

If people wait like this for something new and trendy and expensive downtown in San Francisco (a la Slanted Door), you can bet it's overhyped. If people line up en mass for something old, cheap and off the beaten path... you know there's a reason: It's GOOD!

Other than bbq, this was the other thing I was looking forward to during our visit to St. Louis. I decided on a small concrete "All Shook Up" which was a delicious combination of bananas and peanut butter cup. I'm glad I didn't order a bigger size because it would have been way too much, but the small was the perfect afternoon treat. I was a little disappointed about the firmness of my custard since a concrete is supposed to be like a DQ Blizzard where you can tip it upside down and it won't fall out. Although all of us ordered concretes, I'm sure all of ours would have fallen out had they been turned upside down even immediately after we got them.

Tip: order one of their unique flavor combos. As one of our friends described his Oreo cookie custard, it was a glorified, more expensive McFlurry. I don't know if I'd go that far, but I can kind of see his point.

Great ambiance.  mid July night, and there must be over a hundred people, half of which are lined up in 5 separate lines and half sitting in the parking lot swooping up the sundaes and concretes!

Ordered a terramizzou which comes with chocolate and pistachio nuts.  It comes in a white soft-serve looking frozen custard.  It ain't bad, but I'm going to try another specialty next time, like the Hawaiian.  Just wondering if all the flavors are in white custard...btw, I already know the answer is no!

Ted Drewes is one of those local places where everyone in town goes to and thinks its absolutely fantastic.  Every town has one of them-the local institution that you grow up going to and will always have fond memories of.  Ted Drewes is where St. Louisans go after school dances, the Muny, and of course, Cardinals games, to get the yummy frozen custard.  I've had lots of good frozen custard in other towns and at other shops, but nothing is ever quite as good as Ted's.

The crowds are dense and the lines are long during the summer, but you usually don't have to wait for more than 10 minutes for your custard goodness.  And, oh, it is heavenly!  I haven't lived in town for quite awhile, but when I'm visiting, I have got to stop at Ted's!  I was just there last week for the first time in a long time, and all I could do was nurse my mint concrete (my old standby since childhood) and sigh.

The prices are fairly cheap for the amount you get.  There is on-site parking, but expect to have a hard time finding a spot during the summer nights.  If you can't find a spot in the lot, look to park in neighboring parking lots.  This location is open for business all year except for January.  They also sell Christmas trees around Christmastime!  It's on the old Route 66, which is very cool.

So if you're in town and someone mentions going to Ted Drewes, go--you won't regret it!

Well, there's a lot of reviews here already, and I think most people have it right.
A local custard place that has been serving creamy goodness almost forever.
I had the strawberry shortcake and couldn't finish it all...
The cake was ok, and the strawberries were kind of a standard syrupy topping, but the custard was the star.  The vanilla custard is soft and super creamy.   They flavor is not overpowering or even complex.  It is just plain good simple vanilla custard.
You can get a blizzard like treat with mix ins of your choice, cones, or sundaes.
If you're in St. Louis on a hot day, stop by here!

"Get a concrete" was what they told me to do.
There are plenty of options/toppings/flavors.

Whenever they hand you your order, they will first flip it over to show you that it doesn't fall - because it's a concrete!

Everything that a frozen custard should be - thick, creamy, rich. Smooth and luscious.

Believe it or not, I went through a phase when I did not like custard.  It was too sweet, too thick, too *something* for my delicate taste buds.  Years went by before I returned for my old fave, the chocolate malt concrete.  And when I took a bite of that ridiculous, syrupy, delicious thing, I wondered why I had been away for so long.

There are a million combinations, it seems, but I suggest keeping it simple - chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, butterscotch (though admittedly, I've always like the spumoni-esque, bright green pistachio as well).

I live in Austin, TX now and sure, we have some frozen custard places.  But it just ain't the same.  Plus, it's warm here all the time so you don't see the dedication to food that St Louisians possess (for better or worse).   People stand in the snow, outside, waiting to order....ice cream!  It really is THAT good.

I drove really far out of my way to go to Ted Drewes'. Based on the fact that it's been around for ages and the reviews were great, my expectations were high. I was pretty disappointed to find that for $4 you got a "cement" cup which was essentially a huge cup of frozen yogurt. The girl behind the counter was not very helpful in terms of suggestions so I didn't mix anything in to it. After several spoonfuls I was bored of the simple vanilla flavor and couldn't imagine ever finishing a whole cup of that stuff. Especially in the heat of the summer.

Why are there so many famous ice cream or the "fancier, smoother" sister custard joints across the Midwest??  After all, it's only warm for 7 months of the 12...at most!

Well even though it's edging onto the end of winter, I was finally able to visit the Route 66 St. Louis landmark Ted Drewes on Chippewa.  Once you make up your mind on which ice cream concoction you want, you'll get asked whether you want it as a sundae or "concrete."  The latter is basically a blizzard that goes by another name.  I had the Terramizzou concrete (pronounced like the Italian delicacy tiramisu)  that is a secret blend of chocolate and pistachio nuts.  Too many nuts for me, but it was definitely delicious and didn't give me an upset stomach after chowing down.  Also the portions are definitely larger than they look, so you have been forewarned!

All in all, Ted Drewes is definitely a St. Louisian cultural landmark that you can't admit you have never been to when in St. Louis.  Picture it as a "When in St. Louis" kinda thing.  Now for the truth...I personally prefer my basic Culvers or Kopps custard.  It must be because I'm originally from the Illinois-Wisconsin border.

For those who don't know the area well, take my word on this: While you chow down on your custard, take a graceful drive down the hilly tree-lined neighborhood streets of St. Louis Hills (best blocks are on Nottingham and Murdoch Aves).  Truly adorable gingerbread-looking houses with a central park called Francis Park.

I am a SF girl with a strong affinity to the Midwest, particularly St. Louis. I have many friends who live or are from the Lou, and it's really insane as one of  my best friend's, college roomie and her hubby, an ex-BF, an old and even a current co-worker, etc., A close friend from SF actually moved to the Lou for law school. Some days I feel like I'm a native since I know much about the city from visiting it at least once a year.
*As an aside, even in SF, I often meet and run into folks originally from the Lou -- I must send out that "attracted to people from Lou" vibe or something.

Anywho, I don't ask for much whenever I visit, and the main request is going to Ted Drewes. Words alone cannot describe how much I love this purely St. Louis tradition. This is way better and richer than ice cream or gelato. Regardless of the outside temperature (a hot and humid summer day OR freezing cold winter day), OR how long I have to wait in line, I will always have TD. There are many fIavors and specialities (concretes, sundaes, etc.,) to choose from, and I've ordered everything from a simple vanilla cone to an oreo concrete to a strawberry shortcake sundae. One of my favs is a Teddad, which is their version of an ice cream sandwich, but custard style -  with the frozen custard blended with Dad's Perfect Scotch Oatmeal Cookies. Yum, yum, yum!

Regardless of what is ordered, TD never lets me down. Service is always friendly (midwest charm) and speedy!
Knowing how much I love TD, my friend bought me that infamous yellow tshirt, and I wear it with pride!

I'm sorry to say that TD will never franchise and expand to the West Coast. Sigh... What a huge bummer!!!  :(
According to their website, they do "ship orders via DHL,  and shipping one package costs $90 plus the price of the custard for the continental US."
Holy crap, are you kidding me? That's friggin' expensive and just asinine (that's for you, Kate!!). I'd rather just cope with knowing TD will never make it to SF, and keep coming back to the Lou. Til next time TD!

All through senior year, people would ask what I was going to miss the most from St. Louis when I packed up and moved to Boston (or Melbourne as it turned out for first semester). I gave the cheesy answers of friends, family, and just the familiarity with the city. Then I realized I wouldn't have Ted Drewes, or any other of my favorite hang outs.

I returned home from aboard three weeks ago and just didn't have the chance to get down to Ted Drewes until today. It was just like how I left it, with the addition of the holiday specials. As many before have said, the possibilities are endless. One thing I didn't pick up in the first few reviews, is that no one mentioned how cheap it is! for the amount of ice cream you get, so here's the scoop. A mini (their small, which it's not - I rarely finish a mini) is 2.10! Then their regular at just over 3, which is at least 12 or 16oz. Then the large comes in at 4.20 (I think), and its bigger than a Venti coffee from Starbucks.

Now why was I eating ice cream with my family in the middle of December? Because we also got the Hanukkah Bush / Christmas Tree today silly. Yes. All through December, Ted Drewes is home to the absolute best trees and wreaths. The trees range in price from 50 to 200 depending on the breed and footage, but they are worth it. Living in U. City, we have many other options, and without I-64/40 getting to Ted Drewes this year was not easy, but would weren't going to back down on our favorite trees and icecream.

In the holiday months, I opt for the Great Pumpkin - which is literally a pie of pumpkin pie blended into their vanilla custard with whipped cream. It's AMAZING.

In the summer, friends and I pile into one car (usually my SUV) and head on down to eat icecream in the true STL fashion: sitting in the trunk of my car. In those times, I get a simple chocolate chip concrete. Friends get the Hawaiian, or Reeses and strawberry, or cookie dough, or pineapple, ect.

To be honest, I had never heard of Ted Drewes until I saw an episode of the NBC reality show, "The Great American Road Trip."  It's an historic Route 66 attraction.  I'm not really sure what sets it apart from any other frozen custard place.  I certainly enjoyed the "Concrete Terramizzou" that I ordered, but maybe I'm just not a frozen custard afficionado.  Still, it's worth a visit to see what all the fuss is about.

The custard is good -- not exceptional -- good.

I'll give them credit for having exceptionally speedy service.

Thought this place was all hype, WRONG!  Yes Virginia, the hype is right.  This little oasis is located outside of St. Louis proper, but worth the trip.  I got the Hawaiian concrete style, and could not get enough.  My boyfriend got the Cardinal sin in a baseball cap cup.  It was all good.  There are picnic tables and benches outside for relaxing on, and there's a customer accessible water fountain to quench your thirst after your diving into your dairy wonderland.  Really enjoyable.

St. Louis.
Summertime.
Saturday Night.
Out for a cruise with your fam or your best girl.
Driving down Chippewa.
Hordes of people standing around.
Line of cars backed up to get into the lot.
The friendly neighborhood cop directing traffic.
How do they fit all those cars in that tiny lot?
Stare in amazement at the menu.  The combos.  The possibilities.
Man this line is going to take forever! (it doesn't)
You order.  No pen, no paper.  They remember it all.
They hand you the order upside down.  You might freak out.  Don't.  It ain't going anywhere.
The taste combinations explode in your mouth.
You look around.  Doctors, lawyers, policemen, factory workers, newborn babies, screaming kids, teenagers, old married couples, white, black, brown.  Even dogs and cats.  Everyone is here for this and everyone is happy.
Pop open the hatchback and turn on the Cards game.  What's the score, Mike?
Well, we better get going soon.  Get out before the post-game rush.

Ted Drewes is the great uniter of St. Louis.  There may be better ice cream, but the experience is pure.  Everyone goes to Ted Drewes, and everyone loves it.  You remember when your parents took you as a child,  you remember going there on cheap dates, and you remember taking your own kids there.  Rarely will you see such a spectrum of people, kind to each other, getting along as one.  Anyone can make good ice cream, but a trip to Ted Drewes may just restore your faith in humanity.

When I was living overseas, I had dreams about this place. The frozen custard is ridiculously good. There's not a summer night where any Ted Drewes isn't packed. Besides the brewery, Cardinals, and the Arch, this is a St. Louis landmark.

Ok, for years, we've heard about Ted Drewes from our friends from St. Louis.  "Yea yea yea yea, how good could it be?" We would say. We would excitedly tell said friends about new run-ins with great soft serve ice cream, "Just you wait" they would respond, referencing a planned trip to St. Louis.
And damn, it was good.  It was very good.  We got the brownie concrete, the Hawaiian concrete, and tasted the peach and chocolate concrete. First, all of them were great, so if you get any of them you won't be disappointed.  However, the Hawaiian (with macadamia nuts, coconut, and pineapple) and vanilla custard, was simply out of this world.
Ted Drewes is a St. Louis institution and if you haven't been here, you simply have to go. We went in the middle of a chilly day on a Sunday, so the line was very small. However, they had a lot of windows that I'm sure they would open up when it's hot and nighttime. So while the lines may get long, I'm sure they do a good job of crowd control.

I'll readily admit that I am not a frozen confectionery fan.   It's honestly been several years since I had anything remotely resembling ice cream (except maybe a blended banana in a smoothie), but my husband eats it like a constantly PMSing women, and he only eats the good, or at least decent stuff.  I had Ted Drewes once maybe a dozen years ago, and now my sister lives about 4 blocks away, so we pass it continually while visiting her, so it's only fair to let my husband try it.

My parents, sis, and husband all got items, and for $12 for 4 items isn't bad, but there was a group consensus that no one wanted to go back that visit;  I suspect that the temperatures creeping below freezing may have done that, but if my husband passes up ice cream (custard, not same, I know, but same concept--he does fro-yo as well), then it can't be that great.  In fact, my dad, who will eat anything, threw 80% of his malt away.

Okay, I'm just a messenger here, but the H and Y family did not go gaga over Ted Drewes.  I suspect it gets exponentially better in comparison as the heat index increases.

Cardinals Sin, Fox Treat, Dutchman, Hawaiian, The Big Apple! oh my lord the choices.  Or make your own.  It's not like they don't have every possible topping, candy, fruit or mix-in under the sun.  I always enjoy a raspberry chocolate chip concrete or a heath bar marshmallow.

I'm going to St. Louis in 8 days, and I CAN'T WAIT for Ted Drewes!!!

I have never had frozen custard until I came up to St Louis. The first time I had it, it was being given away in small cartons on campus. After eating about five of them, I knew I was hooked. I immediately looked up the place and once I visited, I knew I was hooked.
It's an old establishment with an established name throughout the St Louis community. Their frozen custard is amazing. My favorite one is the mix of bananas and Reese's peanut butter cups. They have so many interesting and unique flavors that anything you want you can find.

Ted Drewes makes the the belly smile...

One night I commented about craving something sweet for dessert. My boss driving us back from dinner, hit his breaks and turned his car around and drove me to Ted's for the first time. He said he had the place for my sweet tooth. I said drive on. Now I know we all have well intention people in our life trying to get us to try a shot at the bar or fried something or some other next "Great" food. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. My belly has been fooled many times. However it wasn't  this time. Ted won a delicious sweet custard spot in my belly. It is so good that every time I visit St. Louis now I have to make a stop here. The only question I had since is how did I ever miss this place! Plus don't be intimidated by the long lines the service is lickety split.
