These guys are awesome and reminds me of my college friends who are so into computers and helping others as much as possible.

I had a corrupt hard disk and another company told me it would cost over $1K to MAYBE recover it.  I said no way.

I took it to these guys based on yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed.   At first the guy apologized and said they probably couldn't recover it and then as we are on the phone, he said he thought of one more thing and will call me back.

A few hours later, he called and said IT WORKED.  I got all my data back and a new drive for under $350.

Definitely will go back if I need more computer help.

Long story short, an IT acquaintance who works for a very prestigious college suggested I change ALL of my system's permissions because my Excel wasn't working. After nothing else worked, I naively took her advice, which resulted in my Macbook not even turning on.

It's nerve-wracking to bring your computer into a shop where they could tell you anything. But I preferred to support local, rather than the Apple giant. TechCollective had great reviews, and for good reason! Not only did they restore my settings to the best of their ability, but they also fixed my Excel problem! All for a great price.

The only reason for 4, rather than 5 stars is due to the amount of time it took to fix my laptop. Luckily I had a backup, so this wasn't a huge deal. I did, however, have to go back several times before the issue was fixed. I'm sure if I told them I needed the computer ASAP, they wouldv'e ensured I had it faster.

One of the great aspects of TechCollective is that you are a client with a face and name, not just another ticket number. I never had to wait on hold when I called and the guys were always friendly. I would definitely bring my laptop back in if it experienced other problems (knock on wood).

Thanks guys! Hope you enjoyed the cookies :)

Being a dyed in the wool Liberal, I loved the idea of going to a collective for my computer repairs.  My experience was less than stellar though.  They performed the work they said they would, so I can't discount my experience with them on that.  The two areas I did have a problem with was customer service and length of time it took.

The customer service was just really cold and I felt like I got the minimum it took to get the job done and when I picked up the computer the guy gave me the minimum information about what the problem was and what I should do to prevent it in the future. Not knowing a lot about computers, it would have been nice to have a little hand holding, and for $150 to remove a virus, well, I think that kind of cash warrants some better explanation.

Also, I dropped off the computer on Monday morning and didn't get it back until Thursday afternoon.  I had to call to see if it was ready and they said, "Oh, we are just finishing up". I'll give them the benefit of the doubt about when it was done, but I think the turn around time could have been accelerated by having a person with less experience do the main work while being supervised by a more senior tech.  I would have felt a lot better if this was a two day turn around for $150.

I guess I am saying I liked going to a collective but I could have gotten the same experience from Best Buy, a place know for crappy customer service.  It's a cliche about tech guys to say they don't have person skills and I know that is not what I was hiring them for, but it would have been nice to have felt like they were at least feigning caring about my experience.

I can not believe this place has a five star rating. Is it because of the sarcastic person who answers the phone and makes you feel stupid? Is it because the person answering the phone is not helpful? Maybe it is because the person laughs at you in your face? Well, then I guess that is a five star!

I called a few places because my MacBook was not working and all of the places were very nice, I just wanted to see what all the fuse was about with techcollective and I got a person who clearly did not care.

I will never bring anything to them nor recommend anyone unless I hate them.

    NERD ALERT!

These out of shape, unshowered, slovenly dressed hipster dudes residing in this tiny, hole in the wall shop are my heroes. And they didn't even fix anything.

My sister's old laptop died and with it many years of valuable photos. So we brought it in and they quickly determined that the laptop was very fried and not able to traditionally resuscitate. They had to use a Linux CD to scan the computer and it was in bad shape. So they couldn't help but suggested other data recovery companies.

Very helpful and I would use them again as they do these diagnosis for free and on the spot. Much appreciated.

Perhaps the best thing about Tech Collective is that it's a worker owned shop. That's important to me as I believe in supporting entrepreneurs, at least the ones who get it right. Tech Collectives are nerds who get it, as good at fixing what ails your computer as they are at running a business. On top of that, I just don't want to give over any more of my money to a Best Buy, who has horrible customer service when it comes to repairs. They charge a ton just to diagnose, then another ton to repair. Hey, I'm not Donald Trump (I have good hair, thank you), and can't afford them anyway.

In contrast, Tech Collective's always been friendly, personable and really cut to the chase no nonsense whenever I've had a problem. They're like honest mechanics that will say; "you have this this and this wrong, but if you're on a budget, you can get by with just this for right now, and then in a month or two get to the rest". They're straight shooters, which is what I want.

Screw geek squad, go with TC for the nerds who get it right.

Plus, he put free software on that we didn't have and didn't know about.

Told them my computer was freezing up when I had the wireless on, but it worked fine when the wireless was off. They told me my hard drive was dead.

One system restore later and computer is back to normal...
(Yes, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't try that before showing up at the store, but doesn't excuse them from telling me lies.)

Edit in response to Taran's comments: It's not counter-intuitive to tell me your hard drive is ABOUT to fail, and we think you should get a new one before it goes kaput for good. There's a big difference between that and what this guy told me -- my drive wouldn't even recognize in his testing thing and then he asked me if I needed to get any data off it. (Why would I have trouble getting data off it if I already told you it WORKS under certain conditions?)

My PC died with all my stuff inside of it - no backup. Best Buys was super unhelpful, and were quoting me insane amounts of money to just to look at it, and then more to do anything about it.

I found TechCollective on Yelp, took my desktop there and voila - in three hours I had all my data on an external hard drive and could go back to work. Fast, inexpensive, friendly, know their computers ... perfect!

Wow, I am highly impressed with the service and timely manner in which these guys serviced my laptop! I will definitely go here again, hopefully I won't have to soon :)

I upgraded my hard drive to a larger capacity and then to ease with the transition they recommended running a program called Migration Assist which rolls over all your info and software running on the old hard drive (mine was in working order so it worked seamlessly). This was amazing, considering I could find 2 out of the 20 software CDs I needed!

I recommend them completely from my first experience.

Just got my external hard drive back from TechCollective.  The standard rate for hard drive recovery is now $250, not $150. The employee I worked with was great at explaining the technical aspects of what was broken and what he would do to fix it and how long it would take.  He followed up by phone to let me know the status and fixed it in the estimated time. Completely solid.

I called here about a week ago, rude person answered the phone. Dismissed my concerns without even listening to the problem I'm having with my computer.

A friend of mine took his computer here, they said the hard drive was dead. He bought a hard drive here and it was overpriced! Then took his non-working computer to someone else before he installed the new hard drive, the problem was not with the hard drive but something else.

I'll start looking elsewhere. They used to be my go-to place for computer problems. Well, not anymore.

    These guys rock!!!

I recently finished a new high-end computer build (my first time), and was worried that I had messed something up.  At first I thought that my video card was corrupt, but after having a replacement sent out to me, my computer was still not working.  At that point, I figured I'd just cut to the chase I have a professional look at it for me.  TC's staff was super helpful & took a look at things for me and fiddled around with my RAM and wiring, all appearing to be in order.

Turns out, all that was needed was the "mem OK" button to be pressed (I SWEAR I had done this at least 3-4 times previously), and ta-da!  The thing works.  I don't know....only thing I can think of is that they have the magic touch or something.

They didn't charge me a penny, but I will DEFINITELY be back if something ever does go wrong.

It really, really pains me to write a non-5 star review for this place.  I've used them before and they are great, and they are a locally owned group of tech-heads who are such a better option than the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

I took a 2 year old, somewhat beat up netbook here because the mouse pad had oddly stopped working, or would work intermittently.  I thought that it working intermittently meant that it was either a software/system issue or a wire had come loose, not a problem with the actual pad.  I assumed that if it was the pad it would be an expensive fix.  This netbook is what I use for most of my life/work stuff, and has alot of installed software etc....  Replacing it, while not an expensive process, would be a chore.

I walked in and described the problem.  I am not a tech geek and do not work in a tech field but 17 years ago I did graduate with a degree in computer engineering.  I suggested that they check for a system/software issue, and without even checking the machine he just told me to replace it, that it would be cheaper than fixing it, and that it was definitely going to be a hardware issue.  He also commented that my netbook looked worn and a new one would be better anyway.

I left and came home and did what I should have done from the start, which is check around online.  After about 10 minutes of searching I found some posts that said that alt-F-something turns the mousepad on and off.  I tried it and it has now worked flawlessly for weeks.  System gremlin?  Who knows?  But certainly no need to replace my perfectly sufficient, memory upgraded netbook, transfer my files and software, and send another piece of tech gear to Asia to be dismantled by a 9 year old in a sweatshop.

My HP Pavilion PC was beeping at me (two short, one long) on start-up and nothing was coming up on the screen.  From the HP support website I was able to follow the troubleshooting steps to figure out I had a bad video card and called these guys (after finding them here) to see if they had one in stock.  The tech asked me to bring the whole PC in so they could run some tests and I figured, "here we go, they're gonna try and find as many problems as possible and stick it to me".  Still, the guy on the phone told me he had a video card for about $50.00 so I figured I'd  get out of there for around $100 with labor and support a local business.

After looking at the melted fan housing on the video card they agreed with my diagnosis and let me know that the motherboard actually has a video output (which HP covered up with a bit of plastic) and that unless I was a gamer didn't need a separate video card at all!  The tech then tested my hard drive (it passed) and inspected the motherboard (which also passed) and pronounced me good to go.  They then charged me the outrageous sum of $0.00.  Yes, $0.00, zip, nada.  "All I did was pull off the bit of plastic covering the video input" the tech explained.  True, but I was still expecting a shop minimum of $50.00 or so and was very pleasantly surprised to be in and out in 20 minutes with a working computer without spending a dime.

I'm sure they'll get some money out of me in the end because I will definitely go back the next time I have a computer problem.  This is the "Geek Squad" for me.

Matt gave me an honest appraisal of my laptop, ran a free diagnostic check, and recommended I not buy a new one, but instead spend $50 to double my RAM from 1GB to 2GB.  He also threw in a free internal WiFi card (since he happened to have one from Dell lying around).  At 7pm when they close, Matt stayed late to show me how to properly configure an external monitor and shared a few other tips regarding optimizing my laptop's performance.

I was treated with a rare mix of honesty and friendliness that you don't see in the big box stores' computer repair departments. I could tell that Matt took pride in his work and he took his ownership stake in Tech Collective very seriously. We chatted about weekend plans while he vigorously worked to reassemble my laptop.

I probably would have gladly paid $100 for the kind of service and expert advice I received, not to mention my computer now runs twice as fast and
I didn't even have to replace it!

If you're considering taking your computer to Best Buy -- don't. Why pay $250 when TechCollective will give you a free appraisal? Why not get treated with dignity, respect, and honesty? You should be able to walk out of a computer repair feeling good about the process.

I'm a customer for life.  As strange as it sounds, I can't wait for my computer to break down again so I can go back to TechCollective!

I just came back from taking my old laptop there to fix my CD drive.  They told me it isn't worth it to fix it and that I should buy a new one, but USB.  He extracted the CD drive anyway to check it in a minute, said that looking at it further would be more expensive than a new CD drive.

Money spent: $0.  So I thought "at least I have to write them a Yelp review".

Also, a few months ago they fixed an issue with my laptop fan.  It was overheating so much I couldn't use it.  After they fixed it it works perfectly.

    Very good service.

Matt gave me 45 minutes of his time during which he

Yes, I concur with all my fellow yelpers.  Don't you wish all businesses would:

    1.  Repond to you within five minutes of your arrival.
    2.  Give you one on one attention.
    3.  Be honest with what you need (or don't)
    4.  Problem solve and send you happily on your way

You know the Geek Squad from BB?  Same type of thing...oh yeah, no VW Bugs, high overhead, or skinny ties.

    Great local firm.  Highly recommend.

Though I haven't actually used Tech Collective for an official business transaction, my short-lived experience with them is enough to warrant a glowing review. I walked into TC with a broken laptop screen and a broken spirit (as far as computers go).

The young man I talked to took one look at my HP and gave me the honest advice that restoration would be more of a headache than a productive endeavor. I appreciated his candor, and was surprised at what happened next. He proceeded to outline carefully what my best options for a new laptop would be, and even gave me a rundown of the different prices, specifications, personal experiences, and varying reliability of competitive laptops brands.

I was befuddled. I walked in expecting to be upsold, jerked around, and made to look like a fool for my lack of computer knowledge. Instead, I was spoon-fed a wealth of fresh knowledge that has led to a safe and secure laptop purchase, at no cost!

If I do run into another computer related issue in the near future, I'll be traversing the small alley that leads to Tech Collective's modest, honest, and well-run operation. Just one tidbit of advice: invest in some type of interior decoration.

So my laptop's monitor went black all of a sudden and it is only 1.5 yrs old!
A couple of friends of mine recommended this place, so i took my dell laptop there.

i was told i will hear back in 1-2 days.  well, i called at the end of the 2nd day and was told that they have tested a few things and still want to test a couple more.  i was not in a hurry, so oh, well.

the next day, they called and said it is working for now, but without replacing a part, he is not sure when it is going to die again.  he was straight forward.  so i told him that he can order a part, but i will get the laptop and backup my files and bring it back once the part is in.

when i went to pick it up, i just paid for the part, but not for the labor.  they said i can pay for the labor once they put the new part.
i know they had already spent some time just to get it to work, so i was surprised.

anyway, they are really good and reasonable.   i def. recommend them.

After an obviously worthless visit to Geek Squad, I didn't know what to do with my computer, as it was having serious problems and I need it fixed NOW because I work from home. My roommate told me that he took his laptop to this place and they replaced his motherboard on the spot-- so I thought these are definitely the people I need right now.

Sure enough, TechCollective saved my life! If I were to leave my laptop with Best Buy, I would have to wait a week, and pay upwards of $375 for them to diagnose the problem and fix it (in my case it was either virus removal or hard drive replacement, and the guy at Best Buy insisted that it couldn't be the hard drive). When I took my computer to TechCollective, they ran their software on it and determined that my hard drive is corrupted in less than 3 minutes. No joke. All my files are already backed up, so I left my laptop with them to fix.

3 HOURS LATER, IT'S DONE! That's unheard of!!! I got a new hard drive and operating system re-installation for less than $200!! Nice!

Not only are these guys quick, knowledgeable, and inexpensive, but they tell it like it is. If you feel like everyone at computer stores acts like a used car salesman, it's time to go to TechCollective and hear them tell you exactly what the problem is; as frankly as possible. They call BS as they see it, and there is a LOT of BS in the tech industry.

The experience was like taking my laptop to a good friend to fix! I can't recommend this place enough!

I went to these guys to get help transferring data from a hard drive on my dead MacBook to a new MacBook. They were totally awesome! They saw me as soon as I arrived and did a quick overall diagnostic check on my MacBook at no charge. There was none of the scheduling and fee bullshit that other companies charge, just an honest desire to help me. What a total world of difference from the hell that one must go through to get any help at all from Apple. They started work on my machine right away, and in about 30 minutes, the transfer was finished, and I was on my way. The fee was very reasonable. They also took my old MacBook to have it recycled.

Took my PC here a long while ago to get my fried HP some straightening out.  The location has loads of available street parking and a great cone-drip coffee place around the corner to grab a drink while the dudes are diagnosing your machine.

Before I agreed to have them repair my laptop, I did some research on their pricing for the part they said had to be ordered.  Their quoted price was actually less than what I could find at other reputable vendors and the price of labor was not too high, so I said A-ok!  Before I left, I was given some advice on how to prevent future problems.  Since then, compy has been chugging along beautifully.

    Thanks Guys :)

Okay, I thought the part quotations were higher than Flea in a Chili Peppers gig in 87, and I committed some unspoken blasphemy I suppose when I tried to save a few hundred dollars by going to a respected dealer away from their supply chain - I guess their profit margins go down too low when you stick to a plan. They would not offer any assistance when I did find the part, i.e., confirming the part would work, and when I asked if the repair could be done in 5 days, the guy said he would be out (he was I guess the only guy in the "collective" that could replace a screen). In addition, the focus of the original repair was railroaded off to another upsell that was not required, and then they tried to sell data recovery rather than just taking a few files off the drive and throwing in the new one I had procured. At long last, the owner gets back to me and hassles me about my mental state, as if his world has been violated due to the above and that my concerns lack merit. Seriously, it would have been fine but he had to write me with his lame bullshit note. So, I just did it myself. And saved $250 on the parts, and $150 in unneeded services. Less the major hassle of course. I guess I'm just a MADMAN for thinking this! Why, how could this be that I would not want to spend an extra $500 for nothing? Maybe the owner should straighten his shit out and not worry what I think.

My coworkers and I came into the office on Monday and found the wireless network was down. Our IT skills were no match for the situation, so we turned to Yelp and saw rave reviews for TechCollective. Within two hours of calling (and no hold time!), someone was on-site. Brian quickly diagnosed and fixed our problem and set up a better system than we had previously had going. We'll definitely be using TechCollective in the future.

The guys at TechCollective totally ROCK!  One day one of our old Dell computers (6 year old Dell Dimension desktop running XP) won't turn on.  Push the button and the keyboard lights go on, but no boot. I'm no It or tech guy, so I ask an It guy and he doesn't repair hardware.  Tells me to take it to the Geek Squad.  Yeah, right!
I look on Yelp and see 5 stars for TechCollective as reliable and reasonable.  Conveniently located in the heart of the Mission, I drop in and Johanas tells me to bring the Dell in.  He opens it up and goes through a systematic diagnostic sequence and in 5 minutes finds it's a power supply problem.  Get this- he has a power supply for the old machine and hooks it up on the spot.  As good as new! He even ran a diagnostic on the hard drive to make sure bit was OK. 40 bucks for the power supply and 35 to install and I'm up and running in a half hour. Awesome.

Fantastic computer repair place !  Took my pc here and they immediately diagnosed the problem with my video card.  They tested my hard drive, said it was fine and replace the broken part immediately.  They also helped me out installing some software.  Highly recommended.

My 2 year old laptop suddenly dies and I have a presentation to give in 2 days. Help! I liken computer problems to modern car problems. Tech Collective came to the rescue. I was worried that I was going to get a runaround and that it would cost an arm and a leg, and pretty sure I would barely be able to even describe the problem (being the tech guru i am - ha!).
Tech Collective diagnosed my laptop with a failed hard drive within minutes, and had an easy to understand flowsheet of the different options (with prices) of how to handle it. The guy who answered my questions did so clearly and without making me feel lame.
My laptop was ready to go the next day, and the price tag was very reasonable.
Quick service. Reasonable prices. Nice guys. Annnnnnnnd the laptop is working great!!!!

Came in with a dead laptop, left with renewed confidence and a great sense of how to avoid future issues. Guy was hyper competent, friendly but not fake. Would absolutely return and would recommend this place to anyone and everyone, MAC or PC.

I have to make this brief. Oh, I'll never achieve "Elite" status! :-(

My husband's computer recently and suddenly stopped working. Needless to say he was nonplussed and I felt it incumbent upon me to do something. In a delightful synthesis of my super hero skills, I whipped out my laptop and logged onto yelp. Yelp, I mean, WIFE to the rescue! Yelpers directed me to TechCollective and voila! A same day appointment for diagnostics was obtained. They quickly determined it was just a deficient power supply and offered an upgrade. My hubby opted to wait on it. Fast and friendly, but most importantly professional, TechCollective did not try to force this equipment on my husband, but simply fed him the facts. Tasty, juicy facts!

Most importantly, they performed the diagnostic for FREE! Can you believe it?! I would have gladly paid for the diagnostic, but I am not complaining! Husband returned with computer, sans power supply, and we hunted down the one we wanted at Fry's. I know what you're thinking, poor TechCollective - not so much as penny?! Not so. We had them install the power supply, which they said they could do in 24 hours, due to being swamped before a weekend. They actually completed the job in less than 2 hours. Now my husband can return to spending the whole weekend playing first person shooter war games while I yell at my poorly performing football team(s).

And all is right with the world. If we ever have an issue with our computer again, we will definitely return to the TC - they are knowledgeable, efficient, savvy and generous.

Communication is good, prices are good, service is fast, knowledge is first rate. And, to top it all off, these geeks are friendly! Completely deserving of the 5 star average. Wish there were more service providers in the world just like them.

    Kudos.

I don't know anything about computers but I do know about good service - and this company has great service!  I took in my laptop because it was running slowly.  My friends kept saying I should update to a new computer but really, wouldn't you rather spend $100 getting your computer tuned up than $1000+ getting a new one?

The guys (maybe there are gals, but I only talked to guys) fixed my computer in half the time they said they would and my computer runs as fast as when I first got it.  Admittedly, pretty much everything they said went over my head, but I felt like they really had my best interests at heart and wanted to fix things for me!

    Thanks TechCollective guys!  You rock!

My computer was almost dead and they fixed it for $30.  I referred a friend whose computer was seriously acting up and they fixed it for $30.  These guys are awesome - honest, casually professional and good at what they do.
