Con: Despite beoing profiled in that times piece on fried chicken, their wings are not that great
Pro: kara-age + lettuce + miso dressing on a bun, the kara-age burger is awesome
Con: tiny tiny shop, with weird layout
Pro: $9 gets you 5 wings, kara-age/katsu/whatever, rice and a small salad with a tasty dressing
Its so good, I don't know how you resist
I found a review of Tebaya that I wrote a while ago but never posted ... so here it is ...
After finding this place from another site and reading reviews on here about this place I decided to take a little trip down to 19th street and give it a shot. So much for healthier eating!? So hard to detox from the delicious calories and cholesterol when you're surrounded by it and it's just soooooooooo good!
Tebaya says they have a special sauce that they use for their wings, and when they said "wings" I thought it would be wings and drumsticks ... but they are just the wings. So for you drumstick lovers out there (like me! You might want to go elsewhere or adjust your habits).
The place is a small little hole in the wall place but as soon as you walk in you can smell the wings. I've read the reviews and people were raving and ranting about the wings and the rest of the things on their menu was just "regular" so I skipped everything else and went for the wings.
I got the 8 piece wings with rice, salad and soda combo for $6.95 lunch special. The wings are small, but for me it did a good job of "filling me up." They make their own dressing for the salad, it's not the regular orange dressing that you might be used to seeing, it's good and when some flavors combine it's even better - I'll get into that later.
The taste of the wings have a garlic, salt, pepper and a sweet taste to them. So it's pretty much a party in your mouth and all the flavors are invited. They are covered in sesame seeds and deep dried twice to make them nice and crispy on the outside and on the inside soft and juicy.
In a matter of minutes the combo meal was finished and I was left sucking on my fingers for the remainder of the sauce that was left over. The salad was the first thing to go and it left a little puddle of dressing. One of the wings accidently fell into the puddle as well while I was scooping out rice from under it, this was a good thing! I like the taste of the wings moreso with the dressing on it, it adds a little something to it, or maybe I just can't taste things like I used to since my tongue has been soaked in soy sauce for about 29 years!
Everything went down quick and I sat there wondering if these were as good as everyone had been saying. The only thing that came to mind was the salt & pepper chicken wings from Royal Mandarin ... for as long as I can remember all the chicken wings post snpcw have been compared and have never won. This was no different, I compared the taste to that of what I remember the snpcw taste and again Royal Mandarin wins. But if I were to judge it without comparison, this is definitely a good chicken wing! There's this flavor with the wings that I like, and after downing the entire meal, I wanted more. So here I sat with the box that was only left with chicken bones trying to calculate which selection would be most economical. I think it calculated out to being $0.68 a wing to the cheapest benig $0.65 ... the more you bought the cheaper it was per wing.
I sat for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out if I should buy some more wings, I tried everything to resist but the smell and taste overcame me and I ended up ordering another 23 pieces ($16.50) with two extra salad dressings on the side. Hey when you find a good combination, you gotta stick with it right??
I'll definitely go back here to get my chicken wing fix, but this isn't the crack chicken that's being served at Royal Mandarin.
+mon
To put it simply, the place is small, but suits it well. There's only seats for about twelve people (approximately) but it's not too much of a problem since a lot of the people take it to go.
This was my first time and I tried the chicken katsu sandwhich, really good! It comes with two wings on the side (those were good too!). All for about $8 which I consider a great deal:
-sandwhich (loaded with chicken)
-side salad w/ dressing
-wings
-and a complementary soda/tea!!
Definitely a must see if you're in the area.
Take-out could not get any tastier. Literally. The crispy tender double fried wings are undeniably good. Recently featured in the New York Times as one of the best wings spot; these japanese style wings--bearing a distinct similarity to Korean fried chicken--bring standard buffalo wings to disgrace.
My three criteria for determining tasty wings: crunchy exterior; tender moist center; and a rich distinguishing sauce. Tebaya satisfies all three categories principally with its uniquely addictive sweet and spicy sauce. The barely battered wings are fried twice; the first fry: seals the flavor; and the second fry: magnifies the crunch factor. Dousing the finishing fried product with a rich Mahoney sauce made of soy sauce, mirin (sweet rice wine), black pepper and sesame seeds creates a matrimony of flavors and textures.
Opened since 2006--I wonder why I haven't discover this earlier--this little take-out spot has some big bold flavored wings that every wing fanatic should scout out. Those who are fortunate to work in the vicinity will find its lunch special to be absolutely satisfying. Tebaya is open everyday til 9:45pm.
Three of my girlfriends and I visited Tebaya tonight as we saw that it was "Hot on Yelp". We ordered the Combo lettered "E". This came with 24 wings, 10 of the Karaage (deep fried chicken with garlic and pepper spices) and 6 of the Potemochi (fried mashed potato with a mochi consistency). We personally thought that although the Karaage were already seasoned, we felt the desperate need to dip it in a bucket full of sauce. We asked, but they did not oblige. I guess they didn't want us to butcher the taste with teriyaki sauce. We also wished that the chicken wings had more meat on the bone (perhaps we all just have very big appetites). Also, the Potemochi was a little too oily for my liking.
All in all, this was definitely a decent meal for $8 in the city. And we also had a good laugh when I got too aggressive while eating and flung a chicken wing bone on my girlfriend's lap.
Any place that calls itself a house of chicken wings, has a lot to deliver on. And Tebaya deserves the name on its window.
Like any good wing, its wings are fried so that the skin becomes crispy. thankfully, there is no thick breading either--it's just the wing, fried in magical oil, tossed in a sweet and spicy glaze. in taste, it reminds me if bon chon combined their soy-garlic flavor with their spicy flavor, and they are pretty affordable (8 for $6).
Don't expect much in terms of seating but if you happen live near there or are just walking by and see it open, just go right in and take the opportunity to experience an amazing wing. too many times, i've eaten normal, mealy wings that cost me $10 for a plate of 8 wings.
If only tebaya had 25 cent wing nights...
I was sooo rooting for this place as I hope it override the KFC (korean fried chicken) that I have at an another establishments. Sadly, it was not my cup of tea as I find the black pepper to be overpowering...HOWEVER, their chicken tatsu with their special miso dip was SPECTACULAR...definitely will come back to try their curry katsu :)
My favorite place to go for crispy Nagoya-style tebasaki (wings). The chef is super kakkoii (cool)! If you watch, the chef carefully puts the wings to fry until it has reach its golden hue. It's obvious a lot of love goes into the preparation. Not only are the wings tasty at Tebaya, it's got a special method of cooking oil claimed to be good for you! Definitely get an order of wings preferably 13 pcs with the Potemochi (potato cake). I had the chicken teriyaki tsukune with rice (grilled chicken meatballs with minced tofu and ground chicken), unbelievably good! The apple tea went well with my lunch. It had a slight tea taste with a hint of apple flavor. The only negative factor is the tight space, the shop is really small. The taste and price makes up for it if you are looking for an affordable meal or quick bite.
I get mad cravings for the teriyaki chicken sandwich on a regular basis, and no matter how much I consider trying something else on the menu -- the katsu maybe? -- I can't help it, it's my usual. The lunch special includes two perfectly crispy chicken wings, a side salad and a drink. I always get the homemade jasmine tea. So glad I work nearby!
Not a lot of room for sitting down to eat unless you want to perch on a stool in the window and read a Japanese language periodical.
Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich = YUM
Do not mistake this lightly breaded chicken sandwich with the Teriyaki Burger. They're different items.
Tebaya, which means house of chicken wings in Japanese, is a Nagoya-style soy sauce based chicken wing specialty hole in the whole. Nagoya is the third largest city in Japan and usually uses miso in many of their dishes though. Unfortunately the wings are good, but not great. I do like how they leave the skin on (read: collagen).
They also serve potemochi, a potato side order with a mochi consistency. It's novel, but it's not something I'd order again.
Tebaya started serving katsu (breaded pork cutlet) curry, which is surprisingly great!
If their wings were really good, then I'd bump them up to a 5.
::guffaws maniacally::
well now what am i supposed to do?! tebaya is a quick right then left stroll from my office. and these wings are addictive.
i get either the 8 piece wings with rice and a soda for $8 or, when i am feeling particularly oinky, i get the 13 piece with no rice, plus a coke. and i slowly eat them all afternoon.
stressed? eat a wing.
bored? eat a wing.
tired? eat a wing.
full? eat a wing anyway.
they taste sticky sweet, crispy, and delicious. they're meaty. they're saucy.
they're totally rufus.
bye bye, tebaya! see you tomorrow!
Tebaya is known for its chicken wings. That is what they are about. and for that, thank God! I am grateful for their consistency. Their wings are special variant that come sprinkled with sesame seeds, is not hot, it a little crunchy, a little sweet, and very, very tasty. And from my experience it is always made to order. They other foods are that great, like their curry chicken and katzu. The service is pleasant. The staff is young, hip and very nice. I like especially that even though it is a small establishment, with its large front window it is still light and airy. I did not mind enjoying my lunch their. I hope you like it as much as I did. Enjoy!
Impulsive stop here for a fish sandwich on my way to the Container Store. Really glad I did. The fish sandwich brought me back to life. Homemade tartar was yummy and the bun held up to the sandwich really well.
Only downside is that it's not much sandwich for $7 - but the quality of fish was great.
I've eaten their fried wings TWICE in the same week, I'm ashamed to say, because I supposedly don't eat FAT and SALT in such quantities. What's happening to me? And how can they make the middle part of a chicken wing taste so amazingly great? Such that I end up eating almost the entire bone? This place brings to mind visions of lions tearing away at carcasses and yup, you're the lion.
I really wanted to give it a 3.5 but I'd rather go with a 4 than a 3...they were that flavorful! I got the garlic soy wings on rice...it was nice that they had sauce, but they were very LEAN and not very meaty...overall it was very tasty and filling. I liked the potemochi...basically a potato pancake but with the consistency of a rice mochi! It was intersting and quite yummy! Light, fluffy really yummy with butter and sauce.
The place itself was small, so it's a bit tight with a big party ao I recommend only going in with one or two people.
I'm willing to try something else there in the future, but I have to be honest...I'll probably end up getting the wings again!!
Like everyone else, go for the WINGS. These aren't your run of the mill BBQ Blue Cheese chicken wings at a sports bar. These are JAPANESE CHICKEN WINGS. The WINGS get a 5 star rating alone.
But they have other stuff on the menu which are A-OK like the Chicken Teriyaki Tsukune which is like chicken meatloaf. I think it's an acquired taste and it doesn't sound good, but it's pretty good.
I give it 3 stars, because it is small (8 people max) and the other menu items which are decent, but not as good as the wings. But really, the only real reason to go is for the WINGS alone.
Can't say it enough: WINGS WINGS WINGS.
After a few good buys at TJ Maxx and BBB I was walking over to 7th ave to take the 1 home.
I had to stop in.
I got an order to go with some of their potemochi (toooo mushy to even have a picture of, bleh).
When I got home I had high hopes for these wings. Look at them. They're little, beautiful, sesame-speckled temptresses. Then I bit into them.
The chicken itself was kind of meh. This isn't the meaty wing you'd get someplace else and the flesh was kind of stringy. They were a little bit on the wrong side of overcooked too.
The skin was no longer crispy because of my journey and I longed for more of the sauce to compensate.
I'll try to give them another shot fresh, but I don't know if it's worth it or not.
Bon chon is still my first love (but the one in Alexandria, VA tastes better than the one here) until I judge UFC.
Ok, basically I agree with everyone else: wings are great, chicken katsu sandwich is great (very rich, though... you will feel it for hours) and the place is too small to really chill in, though it is possible to sit down if you're lucky enough to score a chair. Really it's all about the takeout/delivery.
This is my question: On the front of the takeout menu is a line drawing of a little cherub/angel boy with fluffy wings and a backwards baseball cap. He is drawn facing away from the viewer, but looking over his shoulder with a cheeky little smile. He is naked except for what looks like maybe a sumo belt? And he's coyly covering his little buttocks with both hands. Oh, and he's surrounded by asterisks and a couple of what look like swimming fish stars? WTF??!
But... um... the wings are super. Very flavorful and I think they are made to order, so always crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
Okay, I've never had the wings (which, by the sounds of these reviews, means I'm missing out on something incredible). But I can vouch for their delicious food and amazingly priced lunch special.
For just $7 you can purchase a hefty portion of food, which includes a can of soda or green tea. My personal favorite is the Teriyaki Chicken. I work around the corner, which is nice, because sometimes if you order it to-go, they'll give you a free sample of food while you wait. And, of course, I love a free preview.
The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because it can get old fast. It's definitely a once-a-week (if that) type of lunch. Probably because it fills me up so quickly. But honestly, it's a great option and I can't recommend it enough, especially for lunch!
Dropped off equipment across the street at Hotlights...tired and hungry and saw this place, I was like 'huh.'
Went in while they were not busy, so the wings and rice were both fresh, and wow....so good. That's all I got to say. SO GOOD.
Delicious wings. I'll definitely go back!
After shopping around 6th avenue I stopped by here to pick up an order of wings for dinner. The place is really small and I almost missed it while walking by. It's kind of cute they have a small couch with a small table. Then in the front of the shop a counter along the wall with some chairs. The service was good and the waiters were nice. The wings were very addicting, but I wished they were bigger. These wings are very small and not meaty enough, but the taste is just very scrumptious and makes you want to have more.
tried it based on the high Yelp rating; thought it was aight; nothing special; and, thought, bit expensive for chicken wings; not worth the visit.
place also is very small.
Tebaya gives you wings....and they taste pretty amazing!
I will be straight up and blunt with you. I only go to Tebaya for ONE thing and that is "WINGS"!
Yes I have tried their sandwiches (not bad), Combo's (so/so) & Fried Items (heart attack city)...but it's their WINGS that brings me back to this place.
I usually make this my wings take out spot before heading home on game nights. They are crispy, sweet, spicy and just not your normal wings. They do them good and they do them Japanese Style Baby! SOLD! ;o)
I've only got the wings here, so my review isn't representative of their whole menu. But the wings are so good I can't convince myself to try anything else! They're peppery, not overly salty and slightly sweet with teriyaki flavor, and so far, everytime I've been there, they make the food fresh so it's crunchy and hot. Mmmm.
Why the two stars off? Yeah, I'm being a bitch, but I'm a huge rice lover and their rice tasted like it's been bathing in water for so long that it becomes paste. (Ok, I'm exaggerating, but their rice is really, really soggy. Bleh.) But if you could care less about rice, ignore my three stars--five stars for the chicken wings.
Tebaya is a little, cute, unassuming establishment that anyone could easily walk past. That would be most unfortunate, because Tebaya's Teba (chicken wings) have katana-chopped my mind into little pieces from their sharp edge of deliciousness.
I called my order in since my office is only a few blocks away and it only took 15 minutes to get 3 lunch orders ready. Everything was piping hot, ready when we walked in, and at 1pm it wasn't crowded at all.
The wings are phenomenal, combining flavors of soy, garlic, teriyaki, sesame, and a current of black pepper runs underneath all those components, then finished with a touch of heat. A little overcooked seems to be par for course but the wings are so good that it doesn't really matter. The price is also VERY right with a lunch special consisting of 8 wings, rice, salad, and a soda/green tea clocking in at $6.95.
I also tried their Chicken Teriyaki Tsukune, which is the equivalent of Japanese Meatloaf, except made from chicken, possibly some egg, and finely minced tofu to hold it all together. Absolutely wonderful over sticky rice with a drizzling of teriyaki sauce.
I will absolutely, without question return to Tebaya within the next week to order a bucket of wings to devour with much excitement. I've taken this opportunity to write a new slogan for them: If you don't like Tebaya, you be a lia'!
Awesome wings at awesome prices. What more could a girl ask for?
I went into this tiny, exposed-brick hole-in-the wall with my bf and we ordered the lunch specials which includes a main entree with salad, rice, and choice of soda/iced tea. I chose the teba wings and my bf chose the chicken katsu sandwich. I have to say that I spent a good portion of my time munching on the wings - they were soo scrumptious! The wings were sweet, salty, crunchy, and not too greasy. :) My bf's sandwich had a ginormous piece of chicken inside - I think it may have been the largest chicken katsu I've ever seen. We gave it thumbs up in terms of portion, but thumbs down for taste because it was too dry and flavorless.
Since then, I've returned and ordered more teba wings for take-out. Beware of the long lines and the long waits. I thought I could save some time by calling ahead to pre-order my dish but when I got there, my meal wasn't ready and I had to reorder. I was a little peeved but I only saw 3 people manning the busy little store - they were obviously understaffed for lunchtime - so I forgave. I suppose (near) perfection does come at a price..
Two words ... Great wings... GREAT WINGS. The chicken wings here here are a treat. However Tebaya is a one hit band. Everything else on the menu is good but of a fast food quality and the seat is very limited and not really very good for anything expect fast counter top eating.
But dd I mention the amazing chicken wings... slightly grilled, crispy and peppery, juicy wings. AWESOME WINGS. OK... let me not go overboard ... OMG the WINGS are FREAKING AMAZING. &*@^%$ great wings .. oh man. I gotta stop thinking about them.
So, i wad walking along the street today trying to find something to eat near work after being overcharged to fix my favorite pair of boots...I thought I could get a salad nearby or, maybe perhaps find something new. I walked into this little hold in the wall of a place that I truthfully never noticed before and grabbed the menu, wondering if this was to heavy of a meal..
I read the menu quick and hopped right back and placed my 6.75 lunch deal..for a salad, 8 wings, and rice and a green tea. Great PRICE! especially here in Chelsea. I waited patiently and ate 4 of them, I did enjoy them quite a bit but Can never eat to much at lunch, so i am saving the rest for later...
I give this place two thumbs up because it tastes sooo good...the soy sauce pepper and salt combo sauce is great and its crispy on the outside as its moist on the in.
I love it! Yummy
I first learned of this place through a co-worker of mines. I was skeptical at first (the Japanese know how to make wings?) but I decided to give it a try and I've been hooked since. The wings, which are made with soy sauce, are very crispy outside and juicy inside. The lunches are moderately priced but it's a good deal. They also have teriyaki burgers and other chicken products. I personally like the teriyaki chicken sandwiches. All lunch specials come with a side salad and 5 wings.
The only thing is that I advise you not to actually eat there. The place is tiny (seats maybe 3-4 people max). This is about a 98% takeout/delivery place.
The wings were a bit salty for me. And, they were overcooked too, as certain parts of the wings harden up. Regardless, these are good wings, may be great if accompanied by an ice cold brew. However, this wouldn't be my first option for wings.
Tebaya makes a great Red Bean smoothie. It's good red bean flavor and sweetness without going overboard. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better red bean smoothie around this neighborhood.
So lucky to be working 1/2 block away from this place!
I usually pick from their lunch menu, which is fairly cheap considering what you'll get.
Their lunch special will always include a drink of choice, and a salad w/ your order - all for the price of somewhere under $9! This is CHEAP + it taste good ^^. I love this place.
Plus, the guys working there are nice too.
I'll give it my seal of Japanese approval *thumbs up*! ( I know ... its corny)
Now back to work ....
Snapshot:
Cons: There is not much seating area & they do not deliver beyond 34th & Houston. Correct me if I'm wrong :P
Pros: Cheap, fast (we went around 9pm)
Tebaya is bigger than I expected. I thought it was going to be one of those tiny places that fit 5 people max. It is actually twice as big as (if you've ever been) Pomme Frittes in St. Marks. Also, since not much is around, this is a cute spot.
I've been to Bon Chon, Kyo Chon, and UFC but I would hit up Tebaya first. It is definitely a place where you can chill and pig out for cheap. They played some Indian type music, but not loud so you can have a conversation.
Once you start eating and making a mess, no worries, they hook you up with wet towelettes. If you want to be civilized, they provide chopsticks. No forks. Utensils are utensils :)
50 wings for approx $37. My friends and I got the original flavor. The texture was crispy, not too fried. The amount of seasoning, which is primarily pepper and sesame seeds was perfect. I'm sure there's more to it, but you just have to go try it yourself!
I just tried this place, and the wings, as other Yelpers, were really good. They are perfectly cooked, very crispy. The wasabe dressing with the salad was good, and so were the deep fried potato pancake, served with a side of butter(?) and sauce. I wasn't to privvy on the green tea, but everything else were good. I noticed 3 people order the yakitori over rice, so maybe that's something to try next time.
The place is small, so if you have a large party, I would order take-out.
I'm starting to work my way around this area for places to get lunch. I stopped by Tebaya today, but only after nearly passing the place 'cause it's tiny. All the reviews on here said how good the food is supposed to be, so I figured it was time.
I got one of the lunch specials: eight wings, salad, rice, and a drink... for $6.95. Holy crap, that's ridiculous. I could go three blocks down 7th ave and get just a sandwich for that much. Anyway, the wings seem to be the reason to go here - after all, teba in Japanese means 'chicken wing.' And everyone is right - the wings are damn good. Good strong flavor of soy and garlic and whatever else. A little heavy on the black pepper, but other than that, excellent. Not dry at all, and not overglazed in sauce. The salad was your standard small Japanese side salad.
All of their lunch specials look good, so I will probably have to stop by again. If I lived in the area, I'd certainly consider a bucket of wings for dinner. Or a snack. Whatever.
Tebaya is all sorts of delicious.
ok, so i was probably stupid and ordered the katsu curry. first of all, the rice was WET AND STICKY, and yes, i know what they she said. it was like the rice hadn't had time to dry. when i first opened up my container (and why is everything in styrofoam if you're just eating in?) i knew it was going to be bad. however, the katsu was freshly fried and had a good amount of crunch to it. but $8 something for a medicore curry? i'd rather go to soy for that price and get a much much better tasting japanese curry.
my boyfriend had the chicken katsu sandwich, which came with 5 of the famed chicken wings. the sandwich was pretty good, they give alot of chicken and i probably should have gone that route. i thought the chicken wings were okay, i've had better.
so really, my review is mostly a 2 but i gave it a 3 for the bf's sandwich.
I recommend the Chicken Katsu sandwich.
This is probably the first Japanese wing place I've ever seen...and I have to say it's quite good.
Must Order:
Teba: love the slightly sweet taste as well as the addition of the sesame seeds and most of all - the crisp texture of the wings! These are so addictive, it's hard to stop!
Karaage: fried boneless chicken thighs are where it's at, but to maximize the deliciousness of this dish, I'd highly recommend ordering this to go and mixing some kewpie mayonnaise and chili-garlic sauce together to use as a dipping sauce. The soy mixture they provide is ok, but the spicy mayo combo is divine!
Want to try:
There's this crab croquette burger (can't recall the exact name of the dish, unfortunately it's not listed on menupages) that I definitely want to try when I go/order with more people!
Skip:
Potemochi: Just didn't find this pan-fried potato cake particularly flavorful...and I usually LOVE all things potatoes...
Service:
The people here were very friendly, makes the experience much more enjoyable :)
If you are looking for plump and meaty wings, then Tebaya's not going to make the cut. Though Tebaya wings lack in size, it packs a good amount of flavor and has a chewy texture. If you want to make a meal out of it, do add rice and have it with the delicious sauce.
This place is definitely in no man's land. If you weren't coming here, you'd never know where it's located. How I found it?
My sister was on the biggest chicken wing kick ever. You know, when you have something good and you just can't get it out of your mind... You just have to keep having more and more of it. Well, these weren't the chicken wings that started her obsession. These were the wings that satisfied the craving! That's how I found this place...
We headed over here to get some lunch. It's a really cozy space, so if you're a big group (in this case - probably 3 or 4), you'd be taking up all the counter space. But since it was just the two of us, we were fine.
We each got the teba lunch - 8 wings with rice and a soda. I think we both figured it might be kinda small and skimpy. It was delicious! Crispy, tasty and super filling. We probably could have shared one lunch and just gotten an extra soda, but it ended up working out. We took the wings we couldn't finish home and they tasted just as good reheated. Yum, yum, yum!
Also tried their potemochi, but wasn't really impressed. It's kind of like a mashed potato and mochi cake - fried and topped with butter. It was kinda like a big, fried, sticky gnocchi. It was okay, but I probably wouldn't order it again.
I agree with Michael S. Stick to the wings. They are awesome. In fact, maybe I'll go and get some today...
