i love me some TEASE SALON!! what i love most of all is just how easy & laid back the staff is. everyone is friendly, fun & fashionable. not only does my hair look fierce, i actually enjoy spending time there.
my girl JESSAH is gonna hook you up. don't let the tattoos fool you, she is super sweet & easy to talk to. and of course, the girl's got skills!! i love my hair more now than ever before. i've been going to her for a couple of years and i always walk out with an awesome haircut & a buzz! thanks for the wine, margie ;)
seriously though, i'm always amazed by how attentive & talented the staff is which is why i send all my friends with different hair types there. everyone that goes becomes a repeat customer. i guarantee that you will get tons of compliments. i always do. -

I feel bad giving Tease a lower rating because Margie is so sweet, but I was really disappointed with my second haircut here. I wanted long side swept bangs, but I got short bangs that will take me several weeks to grow out :( At the end of the cut, Margie asked me if I wanted my hair blown out wavy or straight- I said wavy thinking I'd get styled waves. Instead, she dried my hair without a brush so it looked like it does when air dried (which is really ugly IMO). I then asked her to blow dry it straight and she did which was nice, but she didn't really style it while drying it so it looked a bit flat.
To top it off, I was quoted $68 over the phone- I asked the guy twice for the price because I thought it would be more given I had been there before, but he said it was $68. Good thing I had enough cash on me, because it was $85 not including tip.
Margie really does do a good job cutting hair, and I'm sure I'll like my hair in a couple months' time. But I'm reluctant to risk spending $100 here again...1 Previous Review: Show all »

Ok so I know that I'm just going to repeat all these other wonderful reviews...but this place deserves it.
This was my first time here, and with Lacy, and to a new hairstylist in 4 years...
Oh my god- she's a genius and a master at her craft! She gave me the best haircut I've ever had in my whole life (my boyfriend agrees, I think he wants to thank her for making me so damn Hott) she also matched my previous blonde (and blended my roots that were outgrown to half my head) to make my hair's color more fabulous.
Plus, she did this all with me mumbling and attempting to explain what I wanted in mismatched uncommunicative sentences lol.
She's worth the money. I paid 180 for cut n color. Which is average for a girl in NYC. -

I absolutely positively 100% LOVE love love looooooove Tease! I did a lot of research before picking a place to get my hair cut/colored and I am so glad I ended up at Tease.
Lacy is absolutely AMAZING!!!! I brought in a picture of what color I wanted my hair to be and she totally delivered. All I said about the cut was - "it's too thick, i need some layers, I like the angles in the front, and I don't want a lot cut off"...it came out perfect. The length was just what I wanted and my hair felt lighter and healthier. When she finished blowing my hair out I just sat there and stared. I've never seen my hair look so good ever. I felt like a model in one of those hair ads and had the urge to swish my hair from side to side. Haha! No joke.
Now all I need is to get Lacy to blow out my hair every morning! :)
PS...also wanted to point out that Tease is so rock 'n roll. I almost walked into a tattoo place for more ink after I left there...and I might try something edgier the next time I go. I totally trust Lacy to hook me up with whatever I want. :) -

I have to start this review by explaining that I have not had a haircut from anyone else but Perry at Spa Bar (in San Francisco) for nearly seven years... until just a little over a week ago. I realized I could no longer rely on my trips to SF, which are sadly becoming less and less frequent... so I went to see Lacy at Tease to get a cut before starting my new job.
I was very pleased with how it turned out. My hair feels nice and light, and the new cut gave me that little boost of confidence when I started my new job. Lacy is great, very personable. I have very straight, fine hair, so I like to get layers to give it a little more body and not look so... boring. I appreciated her suggestion of going a little shorter in the front (but not quite short enough really to be considered bangs). I imagine it must be difficult as a stylist, because most people think they know exactly what they want, and can be dismissive when given suggestions. But she is a pro, so I went with it, and I like how it turned out.
I must digress a little from the haircut itself to mention how quickly Lacy and I bonded over our love for the modern vampire (Damon Salvatore is my fave, hands down). The cut went by so quickly, as we discussed True Blood and Vampire Diaries at length. I will definitely be back, hopefully around the time of the Vampire Diaries season finale, or next season of True Blood premiere. I'm sure we'll have a lot to talk about! -

The salon is cute inside, nice person at the desk, great magazines while you wait. I waited 45 minutes for Jessa because her train was late. Understandable. Was she cool about it? She apologized then was cranky and let me know that she doesn't like to take early appointments (mine was at 1 pm).
I was really excited about donating my hair; been waiting to cut it for two years. The whole time I felt like I had to make the situation more comfortable for Jessa. She hated that I showed her pictures of what I wanted, and didn't listen to what I said I needed. She did let me know that she doesn't give bad haircuts. More or less, her haircuts are about her. Not you.
It's a good cut. Just not at all what I went in for. The experience was really uncomfortable. -

After being to other salons in NYC that cost MUCH more (they shall remain nameless) I have often been dissapointed... but Tease Salon is AMAZING! I love love love love the cut that Jessah gave me.
I went to beauty school myself and I've worked in salons so I understand hair and how to cut and Jessah gave me the one of the most amazing cuts I've ever had! She spent so much time on my hair, blew it out, and went back and did the finishing touches so meticulously. AND she curled my hair, which made it look so cute and most stylists can't be bothered to even think about adding cute extra little finishing touches...plus most salons charge for that. I got exactly what I wanted, and more!
Agh. love this salon. Jessah was great! Totally recommend her. I think it's cash only, and I know at other salons you spend like 80..90..100$ for a cut and you hate it, but at this place you'll LOVE IT! I will never go anywhere else again.
I think it's 67.50 for a first time customer and $80 from there on, even broke as I am I'd be willing to pay that and more. I can't stop going on about how much I love this place! -

I have been following hairdresser & make up artist Jessah Amarante all around New York City - so you can imagine how happy I was when she told me she found a new home at Tease Salon.
She is always professional, honest, and completely talented. I've had numerous friends and strangers ask me about my haircut - she makes it look perfect every time (so much so people ask me if it's a wig!). Highly recommend the cool, laid back atmosphere of Tease - everyone is so nice - but if you want a edgy cut that you can rock on the weekends & the office - ask for Jessah. -

my new salon. I've never had a hairdresser or a memorable hair cut. this was definitely a great change. I cut off 13+ inches and Lacey was the girl to do it. She was so funny and incredible. I came in not knowing what i wanted and just asked her to cut away and make me feel awesome. She delivered. Not snobby attitudes here, all fun and wonderful women. Drinks served ( I didn't indulge but they were there) fo'free. Can't wait to come back and try something else.
it can be expensive, but if you're like me and only go when the blue moon shines then this place is a must. great great place to do away with yesterday's do's. Peace! -

Margie has been cutting my hair for over 10 years. She cuts all my friends hair too. She is creative, skilled, visionary and such such such a nice person.
I'd say one in every 4-5 cuts is a botch job but mostly b/c i decided to go conservative or she got a bit too creative on me.
But that said, I have hair styles that strangers in the street constantly compliment me on.
I will forever be a fan. -

I cant believe i finally found a hairstylist that rocks in New York :)
When i moved to NYC from Cali a few years ago, I've tried the commercial creme de la crop salons only to be very disappointed. The hairstylists at these salons didn't know how to work with my hair type and were cookie cutter hair stylists. Meaning, my overpaid hairstyle looked like everyone else that came out of that salon :/ Plus after 3 weeks, my long hair (past mid back) look like it needed a haircut. I've never experienced this before because when a cut is done right, it can grow for weeks without having to come back for a cut.
This all changed about two years ago when I met Jessah. After viewing her prior work, I instinctually knew that she could get the job done. I like unconventional coloring with a glam twist . Jessah delivered this since day one. She's very honest (which I love) about haircuts that might not be as flattering to me.. She spends a ton of time on my hair to make sure it's perfect. I feel like hollywood everytime i get my hair done by her :) Thank you Jessah!!
FYI: My hairtype is Asian (long, dark and pretty thick)... I usually like blonde highlights, a caramel color and my natural dark color blended in. Having had this hair color combo for years, i know it takes a high degree of skill to get the right combo with blonde highlights on Asian hair without it looking orangey or having it overprocessed. -

I got a great haircut tonight from Jessah. I did a walk in and she fit me in right away. I wanted something rocker and fun, but still with some length. She's got great style and offered me advice on what she thought would look cute on me and did a great job! I feel like I just stepped out a salon!
Massage with thorough hair wash, free wine and beer and some relaxed conversation. I just enjoyed this thoroughly.
Wait a minute, this sounds like the other reviews. Dammit. -

Last time I went to Tease Jessah used some kind of "toner" that turned my blond streaks GREY. When I pointed this out to her she said "Oh well".
I came in the next day and she fixed it, but she acted like she had done nothing wrong. Plus she said I'd have to maintain the color on my own at home and start using a color safe shampoo and conditioner, even though I never wanted to get any color in the first place.
The only reason Tease is getting more than 1 star is that the clients I've seen seem happy with all the other stylists and I do like the salon's atmosphere. The owner Margie is very sweet and talented as a stylist.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I finally decided to give in and get a haircut in New York... after living here for 2 years. My best friend had been my stylist for years but recently moved here and doesn't have her shears, so I gave in this afternoon, called a handful of salons that looked cool and Tease was the first to say they had openings tonight and in my price range. (At $80, more than I'm accustomed to spending, having grown up in the Southwest, but I guess this is a bargain for a good cut in Manhattan, right?)
Small, totally not pretentious, rock'n'roll kind of studio. Jessa was my stylist, she was a total sweetheart and gave me a GREAT cut. The ladies working were chatty and friendly, but not annoyingly so (we talked about everything from guys to careers to our respective tattoos)... Totally comfortable experience and killer haircut. Definitely stoked about it, definitely recommend this place. -

So, if I absolutely haaad to pick a place to get a haircut while HORRIBLY hungover, this would be it. Which is exactly what I did last Saturday. So totally chill, it was like spending a hungover afternoon with girlfriends. Zero pretentious-ness, a clean bathroom for me to puke in, and oh yeah, amazing haircut. Margie is the shit. Quick and confident, adds a bit of 'funk' to a relatively normal haircut. Check it out!

Jackie D no longer works at Tease. But Margie still does and she still does an awesome haircut. This shop still has some of the cheaper prices in town for haircuts and dyes though, so it's well worth your visit.

Tease Salon has been open for a couple years now, started by some stylists who defected from Kropps and Bobbers on Ludlow. I've been going to owner Margie for years and years, such that I can't remember or fathom going to anyone else. She gives great cuts, has ideas when I don't, and is an excellent colorist, too. Not to mention she's funny and friendly and just a cool girl. I love the laid-back rock 'n' roll vibe going on in this small salon, but it's not exclusive/pretentious like some other places. If you're looking for a change, try Margie!

I had pretty much the exact same experience as "a d." - I got Jessah and she gave me such a great haircut. I will definitely be back & recommending her to friends. The price is absolutely worth it.
She was super friendly and spent a long time on my hair, even though I was just getting a trim. She even gave me a really amazing blowout w/adorable bouncy curls. I looked like a million bucks when I left. :) My boyfriend said he's never seen me that jubilant after a haircut before.
I waited a little while for my hair to grow out a bit to post my review - about a month or so later my hair looks just as good as it did when I got it cut! I've had great cuts that grew out oddly before, so when grows out and just keeps looking even better and better I'm super pleased. -

jessa is the best. the head massage alone is worth five stars. my only complaint is it's a little too pricey for my part-time pocketbook. compared to other NYC salons they are more reasonable, but for this grad student and $11/hr wage earner it's a lil too much.
the service was great, the cut was great, and i wish i could go back sooner! -

I love this place!
I am a born and bred New Yorker and have lived on the Lower East Side my entire life. Because of this and being raised by a Puerto Rican parents best described as a hippie professor dad and women's liberation movement stay at home mom I've always been encouraged to express myself through my clothes, hair, music etc. And I've finally found the salon that lets me do that.
Every salon I've ever been to has given me the same cutesy long layers hair cut, that coupled with the fact that I have looked 17 since I was 15 makes me look like I belong on the Disney Channel not kicking butt in the communications field or trying to hang with the big boys. Long Story short I like my hair to transform me.
Tease does just that! And Morgan is the SHIT! she took my god awful haircut that was the horrible result of an even worse visit to a Chinatown salon and did what my previous stylist couldn't. She gave me shape, movement and a pretty sweet haircut. She even fixed the bangs and made them look less wig like. I will most definitely be returning back here for all of my hair needs.
If you need an update to a boring same old hair do hit up Tease and get Morgan to fix you up. -

Although I don't get my hair cut as often as I should, the few times that I've been to Tease Hair Salon, I've never been disappointed! Margie is awesome! I just tell her, please do something with my hair. I know that's not much direction but she always comes through! Go see Margie. Great hair salon, great service, and great skills!

Thanks Jessah for an awesome job! I went to Tease after frying my hair with an at home hair relaxer, much of it had broken off and was damaged. Jessah was able to use a gentle highlight and color that did not further damage my hair and it looks so good!! She also gave me a great new cut different from I have had before, lots of layers, bangs that I can sweep to the side and styled it for the night! I also had my fill of wine and we ordered food while the color processed, great place. I saw 4 other people come through for cuts while I was there and they all looked great once finished. It was a little pricey for me (200$) but I got a lot done and it was worth it.

Eh, went and saw Kenny at this place. I was looking for something new. He cut my hair with a razor and was pleasant to talk to. I was a bit disappointed as he only spent about 20 minutes on me, and I didn't get the feeling he was being very thorough. I discovered later a lot of uneven parts - more than choppy and not in the intentional asymmetrically styled way - weird long strands that I had to get fixed. At $55 + tip for a guy's cut, I definitely liked the place, but doubt I will return.
