I'm giving it an advance four.

Finally!!?!?!! got a chance to go here tonight after literally years of trying.  A lot of "you want to try Teany? I've been dying to go." and then "oh Teany is in the total other direction we're going/we ran out of time/we are full from abc meal we've already had."

Anyway, finally got a chance to go and my BF pulled up on the side of the road and let me hop out to scope the place out.

Closed! Due to fire. To open again... someday.

Wish I had read yelp before finally venturing out. :o(

I'm a bona fide meat eater, but when I eat the chicken salad sandwich at Teany, I don't miss the real thing at all.  I find all the selections here to be very good, but my favorites include the beans and toast; chicken salad sandwich, scones with clotted cream; and the the pasties. All the drinks are great (raspberry lime ricky and the teanychino) as is the selection of tea. I'm a big iced tea fan and the blueberry white tea is my most favorite bottled iced tea I'v ever had in my life. I crave it all the time.  Great for vegans, vegetarians, and meat eaters alike.

The only downside is the sometimes aloof, too cool wait staff. It's hit or miss depending on who you get.

Whenever I hear TEANY, i think REGRET because a part time vegetarian like me would normally pray at the alter Teany's wonderful food menu. However, on this particular day, I was busy stuffing my face with Katz's & *gasp* was too full to enjoy anything on Teany's food menu.

This quaint Lower East Side cafe gets four stars for their Earl Grey Cream alone. (Imagine what rating I would have given had I actually tasted any of their food items! Do I hear 5 stars?!)

Teany has ruined all teas for me because hard as I try, I cannot find another cafe who can serve up some Earl Grey Cream as good as they did. (Starbuck's Earl Grey Misto is a sad, sorry alternative, but its all I have now...)

P.S. I  liked the tea so much, I brought some home for my sister to sample- four different blends for about $18.

I love meeting my daughter at this vegan spot for brunch or tea.  Staff and customers are friendly and the atmosphere is upbeat. But beware weekend brunch - it gets so crowded you can wait for half an hour.
Really enjoy their freshly brewed pots of tea.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I thought the menu had a nice variety of veggie choices that anyone, including me, could enjoy. My friend and I ordered the afternoon tea, and the sandwiches were amazing, and the scones are some of the best I've ever had. The petit fours were a bit deranged looking, but they tasted great...their presentation just needed a little work.

Recently, I walked into Teany for dinner on a weeknight. My mind fresh with the taste of the AMAZING teanychino and fresh beet salad and cheese plate from the previous time I was here, I was debating between 4 and 4.5 stars.

But then the waiter had to go ahead and forget my friend's cheddar toast order, and actually be condescending to us about it!

But then they treated us to a complimentary large slice of the peanut butter cake, which according to my friend was pretty delectable.

But they didn't really seem apologetic about being rude.

It's a matter of principle - I shouldn't go here again.

But how many places in the city serve vegetarian mac and cheese!

To be honest though, it wasn't that great.

But the teanychino was!

My head is riddled with inconsistencies.

Talk about making the best of a bad situation- my friend and I arrived at Teany while visiting my sister in NY (we were visiting from Israel) only to discover the place was closed.
One of the owners (I assume) noticed us looking at the place and walked outside to greet us.  He apologized that they were closed, and explained that due to a fire they would be closed for a while.  Our disappointment, however, was very short lived since he was so nice and welcoming and even gave us tea to take home (to experience the tea, even if we couldn't get the whole experience).  And gave us some Teany cups as well.
The teas were delicious.  I tried the peach blossom white tea- it was delicate and flavorful, the sweetness of the peach didn't overpower the subtle white tea.  My friend tried the caramel black tea- it was sweet and creamy.  Their green tea was refreshing and with nice sized leaves (not the broken pieces you get at some places).  and their English breakfast was just as expected, flavorful yet distinctively better than what you get in a tea bag.  Their flavored teas were sweet and flavorful without being cloyingly hyper-sweet and synthetic tasting.  Their unflavored teas were flavorful and refreshing with nice sized leaves (which speaks of their quality- to those who don't know).
I can't wait to go back on my next trip to NY and getting the full experience including tea and food (which seems to be delicious according to the other reviews).

As an avid meat-eater and lover of cheeseburgers, my initial reaction to vegan restaurants is usually one of disgust and rejection. Fortunately for me Ariel K. forces me to go to all her hippy-liberal hangouts, which tend to be like Teany (animal-loving, tea-drinking, english-lit majors free-love conclaves).

I say fortunately, because without her left-wing lunacy I never would have been able to enjoy the BADASS food and drink at Teany.

I got the vegan chicken salad sandwich and Pumpkin Chai tea. The tea came first, and to be honest, I don't think I have ever consumed a liquid as golden and delicious as this tea. Every single sip was more intoxicating than the one before it. It's like sex for your mouth (blowjobs?).

The chicken salad sandwich was good. Not great, but good. I can't help but wonder if it would have been better if their was some nice delicious fresh chicken in there. Mmmm...meat...

P.S. Over 100 types of tea. Maybe even more. I got bored reading the whole menu they have (its damn near 30 pages).

P.P.S.S. They have a pre-fix menu thang. Never gotten it but it seems lke the most bang for your buck.

O.M.G. I dare meat eaters to complain about these tasty vegan treats.

I was extremely happy to finally check out this place as I have drunkenly stumbled by it many times walking from Welcome to the Johnsons to Pianos. I am a meat eater on the road to recovery.

There is a wide selection of teas. I had the iced Energy herbal tea, and a friends had the iced juniper tea. Both unsweetened and delicious. Another friend had the teanychino. She didn't care for it, but, to be fair, she's not a huge fan of sweet drinks. It smelled heavenly, so I say you should give it a try.

The chef salad for $10 was huge. Could absolutely share this one. The hummus sandwich with lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, and tomatoes was yummy. Of course, we had to try the vegan desserts. No disappointments there. We tried the carrot cake and a chocolate cake. Heavenly.

I cannot wait to go back.

So a friend told me about this place and it's fame for not only being a great Vegan hotspot but founded by electronic artist, Moby. Moby's pretty cool and so is vegan food so I decided to trek over during one of my rare New York trips.

First impressions, the outside had a few white benches facing eachother as to sit and have a conversation with your companion. On these benches I see a gentleman that looked extremely familiar but I'll get back to that. While inside, I noticed it's very quaint and has vintage, thrift store furniture. The waitress, while a little too prompt was helpful and showed me the tea list. It was a hot day so I went with an iced green tea that had a hint of mango. I also decided to try the vegan BLT  as recommended by her. Both items were pretty delicious but the tea definitely stood out. It was sweet but not too sweet and had a great aroma. The sandwich was interesting since I'd never had vegan bacon or mayonnaise but worked well. Veggies were very fresh.

Going back to the gentleman outside, I then realized who he was after my food had came. He was Kevin Rose, founder of http://Digg.com and previous host on the Tech Tv's the Screen Savers speaking with his partner in crime, Alex Albrecht. He was in town from San Fran to do a live taping of the Diggnation podcast. Really nice guy and avid tea drinker who was definitely a fan of the spot.

So if mine or Kevin Rose's opinion matter, check it out!

The atmosphere and the food is what draws me back to Teany. Its a cozy place with enough room to move around in and the people who work here are eclectic and cheerful. There is never a rush to leave ( I usually have to ask for the bill).

I would walk the earth in order to guzzle one of those pumpkin teanychinos (with soy milk). So smooth with hints of cinnamon spice and pumpkin. dear god! The sandwich's are also tasty; I especially enjoy the fake chicken salad sandwich with vegan cheddar cheese. If I had the money and a date I would probably split the fixed meal with the scone/sandwich/cupcake combo. Though expensive, its probably more worth your money in the long run then just getting the sandwich.

My only complaint would be the fact that a) WAY overpriced and b) they don't accept credit cards.

It's an adorable little spot, where you can linger (a plus), but I just can't muster up another star as it is just incredibly overpriced, offering little for the buck.  I admit, I did not eat any of the food, but my coffee, which did come in a giant cup, was nothing special, while costing me ~$4!! A plain coffee mind you all!

Too bad it is one of the only little cafes in the immediate area - otherwise your only other choice is the Starbucks on Delancey.

Not a vegan or vegetarian, but love this place. The space is really cute, and my friend and I loved that there were books to browse while we were waiting and talking. I went here for brunch, and got the brunch special, which included eggs (w/goat cheese and peppers, but there are other choices as well), toast, and either green or fruit salad. This cost $11, which I thought was a little pricey, which would be why I wouldn't give Teany 5 stars. Unfortunately I need my coffee early in the morning instead of tea, so I ended up being lame and getting coffee. However, I am excited to go back for afternoon tea as there are NINETY-EIGHT teas to choose from! Again, coffee was slightly expensive at $3.

My vegan friend got the chef's salad, which she said was delicious. They also had a wide variety of vegan desserts, which all looked tasty. I liked the decor and set up as well. We didn't have to wait at all, either (it was 12 pm on a Sunday).

My personal heaven on earth! I am a complete and utter tea addict. Flavonoids and antioxidants aside, I am still not entirely sure why I have become so fascinated with the beverage.
Teany has the most perfect selection of tea, ranging from the non- caffeinated rooibos in flavors such as apricot, to peony white tea, gunpowder green and my all time favorite there the Japanese green cherry.
Once I feel warm and fuzzy from my little cup of tea, I try to convince myself not to order the vegan carrot cake, but every time, despite my good intentions it ends up in my plate and within seconds becomes a creamy shadow of its former self. Delicious I tell you!
What makes this place even groovier in my opinion is that music prodigy Moby owns it. And to that I raise my cup!

A nice, intimate tea/veggie eatery.

Honestly, I didn't even know it was a vegetarian restaurant until it was too late. But the food is quite good, probably because it doesn't rely too heavily on trying to replicate its meaty brethren.

The tea "menu" is so full of options that it will take you a good while just to browse through them all. But I suppose there are far worse dilemmas to face.

The especially cozy interior is packed to the gills with tables, which makes more crowded times feel like your neighbor is chewing over your shoulder. It's not exactly the most relaxing tea lounge, but the good food and tasty teas make up for it.

The edamame hummus sandwich comes recommended.

When you need a break from the uber boring and predictable, "Let's go for a drink" first date, you should take her to Teany, gentlemen!

I know romantic dinners and top shelf alcohol (she's getting it for free, of course she's gonna order it) can be trying on the wallet and I'm sure you're feeling jaded by this obligation so I'm here to set you free. Make it pressure-free and surprise her with a twist of domestication.

The 98 choices of tea on the menu (not to mention you can do combos, increasing your options exponentially) is extremely daunting and it could be quite obnoxiously awkward cruising through it while engaging in small talk trying to pretend you're not staring at her chest. Take the reigns and get to the get-ta-know-ya stuff sooner by having the waiter do the work. Share with him what type, ingredients, and characteristics you crave and he'll be spot on with his suggestions. Order the chocolate peanut butter mousse cake to share which will guarantee you some smooching after (don't all women have sweet teeth?).

Although you'll be intimate with your neighbor, she'll appreciate the relaxed, no pressure atmosphere and the clean, crisp ambiance.

And if you think it's in the bag, buy her what she drank that evening in the form of loose leaves so she'll associate that night with you every time she boils a pot. And if you're lucky, you'll come over and she won't have to remember the tea at all....

We went here to get a drink and they had a menu dedicated to all the different kinds of teas that were available. I don't remember how many there were but it must've been over 50 choices! I must admit, I was a bit overwhelmed but I ended up getting the Teany Chino which I figured must've been one of their signature drinks just by the name. It was much better than I had expected and I would definitely go back there to get another cup of that Teany Chino.

The place is pretty small and the tables are really close together - so you're almost sitting next to other customers. That was the only thing that I didn't like about this place.

It's definitely worth checking out.

It's tea time at teany.

Despite my obsession with coffee and the jitters that result when I don't get my fix, I'm actually a tea person. I wake up with tea every day and wind down with it nightly. Thus, a visit to teany on the Lower East Side not only makes sense, it is expected.

I had their "Hairy Crab Oolong" tea and a cup of lentil soup. Service was a bit slow and my tea was forgotten (I had to remind the server), but once everything arrived, it was very tasty. The tea was hot and flavorful with a distinctly peachy aroma; the soup was chunky and thick--the way soup should be.

I entered on an empty stomach. A pot of tea and a small cup of soup left me full and satisfied. There is an interesting selection of vegan desserts, but my sweet tooth was not up for the challenge (rare but it happens). The place did feel a bit pricey (oolong tea starting @ $7.50), but all in all, teany is worth checking out.

There is no doubt I will be back. Hopefully the service will be better the second time around.

This place gets MAJORLY crowded, to the point where you're practically sitting in another person's lap. The staff is hit or miss in terms of friendliness and in regards in how long you'll wait.

They make the best iced Mint Tea ever. I still think about this all of the time and cannot figure out how to make mine taste as good.

On my first visit, I had no idea that this was a vegan place and ordered the Turkey Club, and it was awesome. The only difference I noticed was the Nayonnaise, which made me stop using regular mayonnaise, and switch to the product itself.

Great atmosphere when it's not too crowded.

I shared two pots of tea (Morrocan Mint Jasmine & Golden Monkey) with two friends. The tea was nothing spectacular, but then again, we didn't choose anything that sounded particularly exotic. Two pots for three people was a perfect amount, but the $2 per cup fee for sharing pots is a little unnecessary.
The food, however, was fantastic. The edamame hummus with crudite and crostini was delicious and fresh, and the cheese plate had lots of variety and was beautifully arranged. The triple chocolate brownie was so rich and decadent; by far the best vegan dessert I've ever had.
A little pricy for my taste, but I'd definitely come back for a special occasion.

My waiter on both visits on my vacation was a snotty hipster who slammed a plate down after me asking him what the frosting was on a cake (which he previously said was his favorite) and told me 'it's nuts' - dude, the nuts are clearly on top of frosting of some sort....but overall he had a sense of humor.  Or I'd like to credit him with one.

I'm really here moan and groan sigh over Teanychinos.  The Earl Grey Teanychino was my favorite beverage my entire vacation.  I wish I had gone every day for one.  It was perfect and creamy and foamy and spiced and I wanted it to last an hour.

Pros: Great food that even a non-vegan will like. I've had their BLT and even my meat-loving boyfriend had one of their sandwiches and liked it!

To drink, raspberry lime ricky is good for non-tea drinkers (like me). But the tea selection is amazing, and I've heard good things from friends.

Cons: The restaurant itself is cramped, even in the middle of the afternoon, so don't bring big bags! Be prepared to wait if necessary. But it's worth it, and it's so cute. Waitresses are nice and eccentric - one even let us take a picture of her tattoo that we thought was cool. Everyone seemed very good-natured.

I love Teany.  I think if I were vegan, I'd have better things to say about the food, but as is often the case, fake meat just doesn't take the place of real meat.  That said, I did have a really wonderful tea latte type drink that I'd like to try again - and there were a number of other delicious-looking things on the menu that I didn't get a chance to eat.  It's a very sweet little place, and I'd like to go there again if they reopen after the fire.

I had #13 peony ($7)...not very flavorful but pretty and #14 (4.50) tast like smoked mozzerella. So, if you dont know your teas and are not "adventurous" stick to what you know

Teany does live up to its name, even by New York standards. The tea house is very small, and tables are crowded up to each other, with barely enough room to maneuver from chair to bathroom. Tables, too, are dwarf-sized. My Teany companion and II had to creatively place our tea pot, two cups, travel-Scrabble board, our Scrabble tiles, and two books on a very small surface area.

In spite of the crowded house and filled-to-the-brim aesthetics of Teany, service was good, and the tea delicious and memorable. Food at Moby's tea dive is also pretty good. I suggest a pot of Teany's earthy and fruity herbal chai; the welsh rarebit sandwich, mixing cheese, beer, mustard, pickled onions and sliced tomatoes; and a simple salad paired with the vegetarian chili.

When in Teany, do as Moby does and go vegan.

MOBY and his then girlfriend put together TEA NY as in TEA NEW YORK...   It features a great list of teas, an eclectic clientele and wait staff, and even some vegan treats to keep you busy.

I like the pu-erh tea (pronounced POUR), as well as the various jasmine and green teas... You'll have 10+ pages of teas to choose from though, so don't take my word for it...

I don't give many five-stars, but this place blew me away.

I really liked the ambiance when I first walked in - on a lower level from the street, dark but lit with candles. It was a kind of tea room feel along with some nice touches that lit up the space. It is indeed small, but I got there around 6pm on Friday for dinner and was fine.

The edamame hummus sandwich was AMAZING. I could have eaten 10 more. There were a lot of delectable items on the menu, all veggie.

I had the almond tea, which was nice, and my friend had the peach oolong, which was even better. Our waiter kindly refilled our tea with more hot water for even more tastiness.

We had the scone and coconut cupcake for dessert. The scone was good but nothing to write home about. The cupcake was great - couldn't tell it was vegan. Maybe a little too much icing, though.

Anyway, despite these small things, this place gets a five for the great service and amazing food. I would definitely go again!

Great spot! We came here for lunch.  The place was packed but the staff rearranged some customers to accomadate us.  The menu has sandwiches, salads, desserts and various drinks.  The whole menu is vegan, which is good but I didn't care either way.  There are 98 types of teas and you can do a tea service for one which includes a pot of tea, 2 sandwiches, dessert and scone of the day.

I had the cheese toasts with ploughmans' pickle on pumpernickel.  It was so good with the pickle chutney.  I had the #44 tea, which is vanilla citrus rose. Really delicious.

My friends had the BLT and teanychino and the other had the tea service with tea for the liver and BLT and chicken salad.  I liked her BLT a lot.  She also had a scone with clotted cream, but she didn't care for the cream.

For dessert we all got cupcakes.  I had the coconut which was great; the oreo was good too.

I liked this place and would come back again.  You can also buy drinks to go and teas that would last a long time.

Finally went to Teany, after walking by it a million times and thinking "Wouldn't it be nice to check that place out?"

I met up with a friend and we were happy to find it relatively uncrowded at 2:00pm on a chilly day.  She opted for the chocolate macaroon cake (after being told that what she wanted was out, and that it wasn't good anyway-- I appreciate honesty!) and I went for the beans on toast and a pot of tea.

Our server was friendly, efficient, and cheerful.  My beans were served on delicious pumpernickel toast with fresh, non-anemic-looking (it's hard in the winter) slices of tomato and an egg cup of HP sauce.  Comfort food at its best.  There was a certain element of "I could definitely have made this at home," but it was tasty enough that I didn't let that overwhelm me.

The tea menu is expansive and great. I opted for a black tea because I'm crazy for milk in my tea...and it was good, and the pot was big. $4.50 for a pot is reasonable.

At the end, it was probably more money than I'd like to spend again for something I could easily have made at home, but the setting was so lovely that I didn't mind. Very nice.

(I do want to come back for a teanycino or some iced tea-- I love the bottled  iced tea so I'm sure the fresh thing would be awesome. Summertime, hurry up!)

I challenge you to find a cuter place to sip in the LES (or is it Nolita)? And some fab desserts from Vegan Treats. Do yourself the biggest of favors and order a slice for there and 6 to go (to get you through the week, right?).
I adore teaNY in the biggest of ways. Butterfly kisses to the sweet girl behind the counter.

I've been wanting to visit Teany for a while since I first heard about it.  I'm a big fan of Moby and had seen a piece on the Food Network about his cafe in the East Village.

I finally made it there and here's my review:

Based on the mixed reviews on Yelp, I was wondering if my long anticipation was going to be met with disappointment.  But, I went into it with an open mind.

I had the iced green tea of the day & the veggie-chicken salad sandwich.  Both were very good.  I loved the iced tea, as it was a warm day and I had been walking around the city for hours.  It was quite refreshing.  And the veggie-chicken salad sandwich had a great combo of fillings, w/ a jalapeo kick.

Not surprisingly, given Moby owns the place, the music was good.  The atmosphere is pleasant.  Fresh flowers on the table.  Nice view thru the window.  Clean, quiet.

Two drawbacks from my experience.  As stated in other reviews, the service was rather poor.  The waitress I had was not very friendly.

Another drawback is that the iced tea does not come with refills.  I could see if someone just came in for tea only, how refills would be hard for them to offer.  But, I ordered a sandwich.  It was a hot day.  I just can't see how they would not be able to offer refills.  I mean, it's not like I was going to drink ten glasses.  Just a second glass to wash down the sandwich is all I'd ask for.  Or, how about 25-cent refills?  Anything?  Hello?  I mean, can you help a thirsty guy out?  (Ok, rant over)

Not a tea guy.  But I've heard so much about this place I had to check it out while visiting.  Especially since I'm a vegan.  They have a great selection of vegan desserts.

Wasn't expecting them to have coffee but they did.  It was a little cold but no complaints from me.  I was just glad I didn't have to drink tea.

Staff was exactly what you would expect for this place (what's that supposed mean?).  Young, tattoos, alternative, kind of nice but not really.

I have to say that I loved the experience.

I was just reminded of the Teanychino and then accidentally wet myself.

I recommend the vegan quiche, but I wanted to eat everything on the menu.  Everything is veggie, with a lot of it being vegan.  It is insanely adorable inside, and on a sunny morning the light filters into this sunken-below-the-sidewalk little gem of an adorable restaurant and life is lovely.  If I lived in New York City I would go here all the time.  As it is I am definitely including it on my next visit.

MMMMMMMMMM TEANYCHINOOOOOO.

When I first walk into Teany, I always feel like Alice in Wonderland.  The Alice in Wonderland that is now wearing the White Rabbit's house as a small coat since eating an unfortunate cookie that made her grow and grow and grow - straight through the roof and windows and front door.

Teany is that small.  I feel like I can't really move in there.  Or spread out.  Or find a place for my purse.  I always forget not to bring shopping bags.  If you can snag a table though (for one or two max) you'll be set for a while since there is table service.  And the staff, unlike the White Rabbit, doesn't seem to be obsessed with time....stay as long as you like.

Teany is also *that* whimsical.  The tea's are refreshing and comforting at the same time.  The vegan menu is, to me, a bit surreal.  It is very tasty, though, and I assure you it will not make outgrow your current house.  The undeniably delicious (and way too big) slices of cake, on the other hand, will make you outgrow your current pants.

Really delicious "B"LT! Since becoming a vegetarian, I really miss bacon. And McDonald's cheeseburgers. Those are the only things I miss...not a prime rib or filet mignon...go figure. But anyway, Teany really satisfied my craving for bacon. And the tea selection is amazing!

We tried to go back a couple weeks ago but found out it is temporarily closed because of a fire. So I would definitely double check that they have re-opened before you make your way there. I'm sure it was a sad day that the fire happened, but it was even more sad when we couldn't get the BLT we had been thinking about for weeks...

First official stop on a two day vegan binge fest, with my friend in from San Fransisco.  This place is super cute and small.  I had a vegan BLT and it was delicious, plus some yummy mango/avocado gazpacho soup.  My friend had an unturkey club and a scone.  One of the best stops of the trip (oh who am I kidding I can't pick a favorite, but my stomach is recovering now).  If only we didn't have a million other stops planned I would have eaten more.
