20 reviews for Tea At 1024
I think that in my past life I lived in London because I adore afternoon tea! If you're like me and would like to bring back the pomp & circumstance of wearing gigantic hats (with matching feather boa), then you'll enjoy Tea at 1024.
Tea at 1024 is more affordable than other tea places around town like Neiman Marcus. Afternoon tea with sandwiches and scones is $15.95 per person. High tea around town is anywhere from $24-34 so it's a deal! If Tea at 1024 was a Spice girl it's not quite Posh Spice. But more on the Baby Spice side.
What Tea at 1024 lacks in large columns and corporate funding, it makes up for in personality, TLC and charm. It's a very small space and if you plan ahead you can even dine in the window with a girlfriend. I like to pretend I'm a mannequin then jump up and scare people. You also get to pick your own teacup to drink from (I like a pink dainty one which looks good while holding out my pinky) and they have lots of hats and feather boas so you can pretend you're 5 and play dress-up.
I came here with a few of my girlfriends. We went directly to the rack of hats and proceeded to try on a bunch of different ones. We then were instructed to pick out our own teacup and they had a bunch of cute teacups of varying styles. Once we sat down we decided to try the set menu with salad, scones, sandwiches, and dessert. Since there was five of us we got to try 5 different types of tea.
By far the best tea was the house tea, then the peach tea and hawaiian tropic, then the earl grey and lastly the red tea which was very earthy.
The salad was the highlight of the meal along with the scones. The sandwiches were interesting, but the desserts were just alright.
They have parking across the street which they validate.
I first came here a year ago and I LOVED it! Super cute and the food was pretty decent. Petite sandwiches, light desserts, and their delicious house tea! (Black tea with rose petals!) We had the entertainment book coupons so it was worth it.
Flash forward a year later...
Came again recently and I guess 1024 hired some new girls. We had a reservation and we all sat down for I don't know how long and we had no one approaching us or anything! I had to flag them down. Other than that everything else went smoothly. I really like their spinach salad there and the scones! One of the veteran employees came over to serve us after and she was really on top of things. I think they raised the price from last year since their tea set menu is about $17 not including tip. A little pricey in my opinion.
I love tea and scones so have been interested in going to Tea at 1024 for a while after reading the nice reviews. Since reading the reviews, I was prepared for a cramped fit but it wasn't that tiny. When my friend and I first walked in, we encountered a tiny princess tea party. Sooo cute. They sat at the table with leopard seats and some other bigger princesses that walked in ahead of us were a little jealous that they didn't get that table.
Since it was just my friend and I, the hostess asked if we wanted to sit in the window seat. We were dressed in jeans so we declined. I was a little surprised that we were even offered the prime spot. Anyway, since there were two parties going on in the front, we sat in the back which was much roomier but dingier. It has high ceilings but the old school fluorescent lighting and I hate that flickering ghastly lighting. The decor at 1024 is already shabby chicy but the lighting just made it look shabby.
We ordered 1 full set and the sharing set which came with a choice of 2 sandwiches. I chose the curry chicken and the house tea. My friend chose the crab and olives sandwich and had iced tea. I don't care for fake crab meat so I wasn't thrilled at her choice but thought I'd give it a try. I was a little apprehensive about the house tea, thinking that it might be too potpurri-ish with the rose petals. But it was nice, very smooth. The sandwiches were okay, nothing special at all.
The sweets were comprised of a slice of chocolate cake, a lilikoi cream puff, and 2 raspberry scones with the requisite clotted cream and jam. The cake was eh, the cream puff was good but tiny and we had to split it in half to be fair. The scones were delicious! The waitress said that they have it specially made for them but I didn't find out from where. The clotted cream wasn't what we remembered when my friend and I went to London, England but was sufficiently decadent. The jam was strawberry and probably from Knotts or some other grocery store brand.
So all in all, not bad for the price. The only thing I was a little miffed about was while the service was fine, I had bought one of those gift certificates for 1024 and wasn't allowed to use it since what we ordered was considered a "special". I guess I should've asked if we could use it when we first got there but it has a monetary value on it and it doesn't say anywhere on the certificate or on the menu that I couldn't use it. So I guess I'll have to come back. At least now I know to come back just for the sweet and not the savory.
First off- I love afternoon tea. And E loves clotted cream.
I especially love afternoon tea that is LESS than $16 per person. That my friends is the definition of HOT.
Anyway, so I and a third of my faux family, E (the other third, A, is still in Napa, $*#*#), decided to cap off an excruciating week of graduate school by indulging in a little First Friday afternoon tea.
We went, and though I neglected to get a hat & boa (maybe next time), the small children having a birthday party did not. I am not a fan of children, but they were just freakin' adorable. Awwwww...
Anyway, back to the foods. So after choosing teacups (I got a rooster one) a menu was proffered, but it was un-needed as we knew EXACTLY what we wanted. Full afternoon tea, please.
I had the house tea, and I looooved, even though the flower petals continually clogged my own personal teapot. E had the non-spiced version of Earl Grey. Though we kept commenting how much the other person should try our tea, apparently we were super selfish as we did not actually share. The tea was ever-flowing. Hurrah!
Okay, so the food. Really this time.
our full afternoon tea (per person) consisted of the following:
strawberry and spinach salad
2 each of 4 types of sandwiches (crab and olive, egg, curry chicken, tomato and cheese). E liked the curry chicken the best, and I think i liked the crab and olive...I was a little sad there were no cucumber sandwiches, but I survived. The sandwiches weren't "stellar", but I felt they were excellent for the price I was paying. I've had much icky-ier sandwiches for more money.
a tasty tasty scone, with the requisite clotted cream and strawberry jam
and 1 each of 3 different types of cheesecake
i liked all of it, though by the time i got around to the cheesecake i was pretty full.
Also! There was a special (buy one, get one half off) and they let me have it even though I forgot to bring in my coupon (with the understanding that I will never ever forget my coupon again)!
Anyway, for service, cute (relaxed) ambiance, tasty food, and unlimited tea, this place easily deserves 5 stars.
I will be back, often. If only they start a frequent tea-club...
After visiting San Francisco's Lovejoy's Tea, I became obsessed with taking afternoon tea in a tea house. Since it had never been really my scene before, I hadn't realized that Hawai'i had such a place.
It turns out that Hawai'i has about three places, but I still think that Tea at 1024 has supreme reign over the others.
The only downside is getting there, more importantly, the parking. Just note that if you park in the Chinatown Municipal Parking garage that has its entrance on Bethel, Michelle (the owner) at 1024 will give you a dollar in as your validation. You still have to pay a couple bucks depending on when you go, but it's definitely worth not having to walk too far.
The exit to the parking lot leads you directly onto Nuuanu St, and while I don't want to publicly condone breaking the law, as soon as you don't see any cops and are clear, go ahead and jaywalk. If you want a lower chance of a ticket and a higher chance of living, go for the crosswalk.
Once you go through all that (make sure you are at least 15 minutes earlier than your teatime so that you can make time for these crazy shenanigans) entering the place takes all your stress away. From the friendly staff which makes you feel like family, to the soothing music and the cute antique-y decor, the vibe of the place is all correct. I'm not sure if it's correct Feng Shui or something, but it works.
It's amazing to me that I've gone there at lease 10 times over the last 3 years and each time Michelle, the owner, is there to greet me with a smile. If she's not available because she's in the kitchen, don't fret, another equally friendly staffer will greet you and make you feel at home.
Now the place is small, so it is standing room only to wait if they have a full crowd, but don't worry, you can spend your time trying on colorful & wacky feather boas or crazy hats. As a germaphobe, I didn't even think that these things were that dirty, but stay away if you detest the idea of shared fun.
Go ahead and choose your own teacup, I personally have a favorite. It's the white one with the silver lining and bamboo silver leaves. If you go there you know which one I'm talking about. On a side note, don't break it. It's got sentimental value and all.
So to the actual food part.
The sandwiches are amazing. If you go on a Saturday, the menu is already pre-planned for you. This is perfect if you wanna just try everything. My favorite sandwich is the tomato & cheese one. It goes great with their house tea, which is a phenomenal rose/fruit tea. Must try.
If you're a local or want to try tea with a local twist, I highly recommend the Lichee Tea.
I'm partial to fruit teas, but they do have good quality earl grey and other types of teas as well.
All in all, make sure it's a day where you're not in a hurry, as it's a great time to unwind all the stress in your life. Try following it up with a massage or yoga if you want a completely heavenly day.
And make sure you tip them well. They're good people. I don't even know Michelle but I feel like I do!
oh and another side-note, check out the space and all the other spaces on First Friday's, every first friday of the month. The art changes every month!
If you can't tell, I highly recommend the place. It's the only tea place to make it into my cell phone book.
Been meaning to write this place up but Charlie D. beat me to it :-)
What a quaint little spot where you can have an English style afternoon tea. Okay, the scones are not authentic -- where are they authentic in the United States? -- but they have little sandwiches (not finger, but still small) and salads and a whole bunch of teas to go along with it. Space is quite limited so book ahead if you want to go on the weekends.
I've seen people munching down on their sandwiches at 11am although this is generally an afternoon type of thing. Hey... whatever tickles your fancy!
High tea in Honolulu? No ways!!
The space is somewhat cramped, what with all the random china and tea sets and miscellaneous knick knacks scattered about. It'll make you paranoid that you'll break a dish! I guess it adds to the quaint/cozy atmosphere.
I love that they've got a wide selection of hats for you to wear during the tea party. Old lady hats, pimp hats, princess tiaras, pirate hats! You also get to choose what cup and saucer you'd like to sip from!!
Sandwiches are cute: they cut the crusts off!! Chicken Curry is yummy!
Selection of teas is not as vast as I would hope: you got your "house tea" (yum!), black, green, red and herbals. Scones come with this sour/whipped cream (yum!) and jelly spread.
Great place for a light lunch, hot tea and good conversation!!
Thanks Nadia for introducing me to this place!!
"Cute ambience! Ecletic teapots"
If you like costco food and want to pay over price amounts sure, go ahead and have tea here. Tea was good but I have had more and better tea then the price they have.
The place is not very clean with dusty and old chipped tea pots. It's not really meant for authentic place to have tea time. After spending years overseas and having real tea; tea at 1024 seems below standards.
Service was pretty good with nice staff and owner, however she wasn't very clear on the certificate and that was very annoying. My other friend who was eating her for some reason felt she was ripped off because she wasn't allowed to use the certificate and the staff thought she had 4 fulls sets instead of 2 half sets and 2 whole sets. Nevertheless, its an okay place but I know at least 2-4 places nearby that have better quality tea for a better price.
Like two bulls in a china shop we descended upon the afternoon tea service at the very genteel location called Tea @ 1024. My friend Marty and myself, two big boys, were led to, and seated, at a tiny table in the corner of the room.
Not wanting to call too much attention to ourselves, we attempted to fit in, which was way too funny, considering everyone in the place was female; the shopkeepers, the patrons, even the children of the proprietor.
No matter how understated we attempted to be, everything we did, every movement we made, called some kind of attention to our presence here.
I'd go to cross my legs and I'd almost knock the table over. Marty would attempt to lean back and stuff would fall to the floor. And when we weren't moving our awkward male frames we were most likely ogling the women in the boutique a few feet away, who were trying on dresses.
This was a no-win situation. Women are so self-contained, soft, quiet and civil. Dear hearts all of them, they did their best to ignore us. I'm sure everything was just fine until we showed up and exploded their whole day.
Afternoon Tea is definitely a girl thing, a quintessentially English tradition, usually credited to Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, in the early 1800's. The Duchess grew hungry between an early lunch and a late dinner and conceived the idea of a separate meal. This was served in her boudoir in the mid-afternoon to ward off her own and her guests hunger pangs. Delicate sandwiches, homemade scones, cakes and elegant pastries became the usual fare at this quasi meal service.
Tea @ 1024 was disappointing, offering only two loose teas to choose from, Darjeeling, and Earl Grey. When our pots of tea arrived at our table they were warm, not steaming hot, the way they should be. They were out of one of the four finger sandwiches normally offered (the chicken curry with diced apples the most interesting choice as it were). Also, the traditional clotted cream associated with afternoon tea is nonexistent here; they use a mixture of sour cream and sweetened whipped cream instead...not even close for you purists out there. And, lastly, service here is an afterthought.
Okay, before coming here I've never been to a "Tea" before. My image of tea time was women dressed in flower print dresses, wearing a big hat, and laughing hysterically with a fan in front of their faces. So my friends and I were joking about that.
Umm...when we got there, there was a lady and her 5 year old ish grand daughter dressed just like that. OMG.
So here I am wearing T-shirt and jeans actually being out of place. Oh well. I still think they were the bit extreme ones. Haha. They got to sit in the special wicker chairs right next to the window so everyone passing by can see them.
Anyway, I came here many years ago so I can't remember all the details but I remember we all had to choose our own tea cup and saucer for our tea session. And I remember having your usual scomes and finger sandwiches. But for some reason I think I had a soup and sandwich. Hmm..I don't know.
I recommend it for the ladies. I saw 1 guy in there and he didn't look too comfortable.
I didn't know that we could try the feather boas and hats. Next time I wanna do that!
The strawberry spinach salad is delish. The desserts looked like kicked-up desserts from Costco. They drizzled Lilikoi concentrate on the cream puff and a hershey kiss sat on top of a tiny square of cheesecake. But hey, that's not bad considering this place is cheap compared to other afternoon tea places. The quaint store has that sort of charm that makes you feel like a little girl again. You can play dress up with its vast assortment of silly hats and you get to pick your own tea cup. Hopefully, you leave this place giddy from giggling with your girlfriends.
my girlfriend and i always wanted to try this place. so on thursday the girls and i went and had lunch there.
it was very cute. the place was filled with different types of tea cups displayed all along the shop. some for sale and some not. they had cute hats to make you feel the part if you normally don't have class. haha.. which we don't..we wore dresses to play the part but we still laughed really loud and snorted and embarrassed my bff's mom...haha! okay back to the review....
we had the special that comes with a salad, your choice of tea, scones, cookies, cheesecake, and maybe five different tea sandwiches. it was very tasty. the house tea was my favorite and i couldn't get enough of it!
AND.....
if you ever go to ca and if you're in the pasadena area you must try the scarlet tea room. look it up on yelp. it's soooo super duper cute, pretty, and such a classy place. great for wedding showers and even birthday parties for the girls. the food was awesome and the rose tea was delicious. i would give this place 6 stars!
anyways try this tea room.. you'll like it!
This place is really cute. It is in old downtown/chinatown. It's decor is cute and it takes you back to tea time in Europe! The food is delicious and I like the small portions. You get tea (their house tea is excellent), a salad, sandwiches, pastries, scones and dessert. Just the right amount of food. I left stuffed. I"m not a huge tea person but I have to say that their house tea was really good. You get to wear fun hats and pick your own tea glass. We went here for a bridal shower and it was a great venue to host it. I highly recommend this place for a fun girls outing!
If you have any fun in your spirit at all, you must go here. Pick a hat and feather boa, a tea cup and commit yourself to afternoon tea. Tasty little sandwiches, fabulous little salad, scones and tea cakes, oh yes and tea! Call ahead for reservations.
so i had a coupon to have lunch here, buy 1 get 1 free....it was aite...i mean it was pretty cute but the little desserts we got weren't so great! the sandwiches were alright, but not the best....the tea was pretty good! i had the rose petal one....i did like the china they used, very antiquey!!! but, yeah...i would only come here if you have a entertainment coupon! otherwise, not worth the price...
went here for a friend's belated birthday thing...and it was oh so much fun.
different teas with tasty little finger sandwiches (i loved the curry chicken AND the tomato and cream cheese sandwiches the best!) and a variety of little desserts at your disposal.
don't forget your camera! choose a crazy hat and boa and take a picture!
Must bring your gf to this place! awesome date activity! and inexpensive!
I've seen this place for years so about a year ago my friend and I decided to check this place out and see what it was all about. I have to admit if you have out of town grandma's, aunts, etc. this is a fun place to take them. The tea selection was pretty great, the sandwiches were alright, but the scones, creams, and jams were DELICIOUS!!! (obviously for those with a sweet tooth ;)
