This place is great! My lady and I go here nearly every morning. I usually get a redeye and it's very consistent. The drip coffee is nearly always fresh, even if you go in the late afternoon as I sometimes do.
We got sandwiches once when we were feeling lazy and were really surprised by how good they were! The bread is really great. If you get a couple lattes and a couple sandwiches (they come with chips) it'll be about 20 bucks but that isn't bad at all and it's a great way to start a weekend day if you've slept in.
Everyone who works there is really nice and knows our names.
They have a buy 10 get one free card for both coffee drinks and for sandwiches.
They have RedEyes (the free paper that costs about what it's worth) and the onion there, too. Also they usually have 'mindful metropolis', if you're into that sorta thing.
I live just down the street from Taza and I love it! It's my weekly treat. A medium Intelligencia coffee (you had me at Intelligencia) and a sesame bagel with cream cheese. $4.20 every time. Now, let me tell you, you HAVE to love the cream cheese if you order from this place. They pile the stuff on there but it is delicious.
I once swayed away and got an espresso drink, I think it was a mocha and that was subpar but since my love for Intelligencia is so strong I have never swayed again.
I have also indulged in their stuffed grape leaves, chicken panini and muffins, all of which are subpar.
Coffee and bagels, that's what all the Amundson crew orders and there's a reason.
Customer service is always, always, always fantastic and they really take the time to get to know the customers which is something I've never experienced even as a daily visitor to a Loop Starbucks.
They will make you laugh, the prices are decent. I love this place!
Not really a frequent user as I should be but love having this place right next door. I was apprehensive that this place was doomed to fail as I expected it to be overrun by the high school students. I am glad it defied all odds and actually thrives despite itself. The outdoor seating in the summer is a boon. Mostly it really it is good coffee and fantastic sandwiches. You can get those any place true... but until there's one next to it we shall crown it as the best.
I still agree with what I wrote, but.... not my 5 stars.

I stumbled upon this coffeeshop as I was waiting for my car being serviced at Speedline (located just about a block a way). They serve Intellegentsia coffee -which is a big plus. I didn't try their sandwiches, though -coz it was 10 o'clock in the morning. I ordered my latte with blueberry muffin. Nothing special about the muffin -and the latte was yummy -though I still prefer my Noble Tree coffeeshop.
After I ordered my coffee and muffin, I just realized I didn't have enough cash on me. Good thing they accept cards -with no minimum charge. (phew...)
The place is small, with probably about only 6 tables. I sit on the rocking sofa -reading my novel .. which is pretty cool. The patrons seem very laid back and friendly. They'd smile and make little chit-chat with ya.
Next time I have my car at Speedline, I'll make sure I'll try their sandwich -and I'll update my review accordingly!
After checking out a number of cafes in the area, this one is pulling ahead as my favorite in terms of drinks, food, and service. The barista who's been there the last two times I've been in is really nice and interesting to talk to without being intrusive. I tend to be a bit of a lightweight when it comes to caffeine, so the latte on offer here was just right. My bagel's been tasty, not too doughy, and the wifi hasn't failed me yet. I've been eyeing up the hummus for takeaway, but haven't taken the plunge yet, but oh, trust me, it's gonna happen.
Free wifi! Good-looking food -- will have to come back to try it next time, since I wasn't hungry on this particular visit. Good service. Great iced chai -- though it was a little pricey for a lot of ice -- the only reason this didn't receive five stars.
Can't wait to try it again!
Three cheers for Intelligentsia coffee! They use their Black Cat Roast for espresso beverages. The brewed coffee is excellent too.
Service is always friendly and helpful, although, don't go here at lunch time during the week--all the Amundsen H.S. staff overwhelm the sole barista working with sandwich after sandwich, making it impossible to order a coffee within ten minutes. Depending on who is working, the knowledge and skill in preparing the beverage can falter. One time, a barista (who was new, yes, but was working alone) wanted to use steamed milk for my iced latte--boo.
Prices are what you expect at a Chicago cafe--Starbucks prices.
Yay Intelligentsia coffee!
Folks behind the counter are friendly and make some mean coffee drinks. Would give 5 stars except the baked goods are kinda subpar. My ideal morning coffee spot must have solid, fresh baked goods AND lovely coffee. For me, this is a good spot when I've had cereal at home.
Have yet to try their sandwiches and wraps, may have to update this review once I've tried 'em.
Very clean, friendly, tasty coffee joint. They serve Intelligentsia coffee and a variety of wraps. Has a Mediterranean theme and offers some unique pastries and flavors.
There is outdoor seating (3 tables) that are close to perfect on a nice spring/summer/fall day. Free wi-fi as well.
They have a huge menu of sandwiches and wraps that are very good.
I have to agree with everything mentioned so far. I would like to add that the Mediterranean theme includes stuffed grape leaves. Now it seems that a lot of these around town all taste the same, and I believe it's because most places buy them canned. I was very surprised to find these especially tasty and fresh. Makes me wonder why I don't come here more often...maybe tomorrow.
Great food, strong coffee, and a cozy place to boot - what's not to like.
I live above this place and it is a nice place to hang out for awhile when I need to get out of my apartment. The coffee is great and the sandwiches are tasty. Customer service is almost always excellent. Free wifi!
Good baklava. I usually go to Artopolis by UIC area to get baklava but theirs is usually too sweet. The baklava at Taza was perfect, not too sweet, but not too bland either.
Other food wise like deli stuff can be a bit pricey but you get a big portion of it. Customer service is always great.
Mango smoothie, yum. Their hot chocolate is also good. Some other places I like hot chocolate from is The Perfect Cup, Kopi Cafe, and Dunkin Donuts if you want to measure my taste.
A negative is only...I don't know why but for some reason I keep seeing on my credit card statement that I'm being charged for more than they give me the receipt for. Do they charge a fee or tip that they do not tell me about? And it's not like I'm marking tip either. That's been annoying to keep going back to get refund whenever I see that which has been every time I used credit card and I go there often.
this place is SO close...and SO boring.
granted, intelligensia is good.
but still, the hummus sandwich was just anemic looking somehow. whatever taste it had leaned toward the boring/weird side. ungood.
cheesy sandwich (the name escapes me) equally boring and untoasted. i suppose they would have toasted my bread for me if i had known to ask...
free wi fi. mostly dudes seem to hang out there. the chairs screech along the tiled floor and echo around the tiny room making it a fairly uninviting hang out. probably good for people waiting for the bus to pick up a cup of coffee and a bagel before work.
Awesome bagel & hummus (or baba ganoush) for two dollars. Free wifi, great service, good coffee. I only wish they would play CDs in here instead of putting "The Drive" on the boombox in the corner.
Excellent sandwiches, wraps and selection of Mediterranean treats. I spent 3 weeks without internet using their free wireless to do my consulting work and Nicole and Brandy always make me feel welcome. The coffee is intelligencia and I heartily recommend you wander in.
