Taylor Shellfish Farms
3 reviews for Taylor Shellfish Farms
The location is somewhat hidden and indescribably awesome. We came across it by accident and were not prepared to take advantage of the premises: numerous benches perched just slightly above the oyster beds with scenic 180 degree water views. There are barbecue pits for grilling your shellfish and of course unlimited shellfish of numerous varieties inside at the retail counter for very reasonable prices, much better than what you pay at a restaurant. And it's BYOB, which everyone apparently does. It felt a little like Golden Gardens without the crowds. Can't wait to go back.
Minus one star cause the guy at the counter was a little short on helpful oyster purchasing advice.
In addition to seeing Taylor's at various farmers markets around the city I've taken the trip north twice now in the last two weeks to visit their oyster farms. The first visit was after the Burning Beast event at Smoke Farm. Taylor's was at the event shucking oysters and feeding the folks who had gathered to feast on all things "meat."
The day after Burning Beast in Arlington, waking up to a dark and ominous sky, my partner and I drove 20 minutes north to Chuckanut Drive. A short but stunning drive on the Chuckanut will take you to Taylor's. Since we were visiting on a Monday with cool temps and an overcast sky -- we had the place to ourselves!
They were all business at the farm but took the time to make us feel welcomed and to help us out on an order of Halibut cheeks and some prawns before we left.
The second trip to Taylor's was specifically for their bivalve bash. This time the sun was out, the temp reaching the 80's. We definitely did not have the place to ourselves this time. Thousands showed up for the fun and festivities. If you have never been to Taylor's I recommend both experiences... one where you can enjoy the solitude and beauty of the place -- and the other where you can partake in oyster shell sculpting, a messy mud run and even an oyster shucking contest!

Taylor's has the best oysters north of Seattle, and their family has been farming them for over 100 years.
On the other hand, our family has spent almost the last 100 years looking for an excuse to be out on Chuckanut Drive so we can drop in on Taylor's, buy some raw oysters, and gulp them down on their windy picnic benches on Chuckanut Bay. (See here for details: http://flickr.com/phot... )
Maia's favorite way to eat oysters: Taylor's small pacific oysters, eaten raw
Maia's favorite way to cook oysters: Taylor's, barbecued over a campfire on the half shell with a little bit of garlic and parmesan melted on top
Now, if you haven't figured this out yet, Maia loves all things that come from the sea. This love usually manifests itself as me eating fish and things. However, Taylor's gives me another outlet, which is why they're my favorite jewelry store too. They sell black pearl necklaces, which I longingly look at through the dingy plastic display case, with the taste of lemon and oysters in my mouth. One day I'll buy a necklace with a black pearl; they're far prettier than any gem. Until then, I'll stick to just buying the oysters.
