Well I seem to be the odd man out here, but I actually enjoyed Taverna. A friend and I went out to eat after work, and Taverna is right by her office. We sat outside, as it was warm out and it was great for people-watching (we saw Spike leaving Good Stuff next door). We ordered the hummus to start, and I got a glass of wine.
The wine was just fine. The hummus was oily, but really delicious. Pita was warm and fluffy. I ordered the Kotopita, which has chicken, peas, and other good stuff wrapped in a baked pita. It came with rice pilaf and a side of yogurt. It was really really good! A touch of just the right spice and delectably flaky. Was perfect with the pilaf! I'd go back, I thought it was good! -

They said they were super busy/under staff and the wait was going to be really long. The wait didn't end up being too bad; probably because we were expecting worse. The food was nothing special. My friends and I were just super hungry so probably anything would have tasted good to us at that point.
I went there for lunch. I don't think I'd ever go back there for a meal but it might be a good place to get drinks and hang out at night. -

Ok, I give up! No more trying out Greek restaurants for me. Go to Astoria (NY, not Oregon) for real Greek food. Or to the Greek Festival at St. Sophia's Cathedral on the corner of 36th and Mass (Around the middle of the month in May).
We came here b/c the boy wanted to take me to a "romantic" place. Wasn't romantic and the food wasn't good, either.
The spanakopita was embarassingly bad. The greek salad was small. The bread? You guessed it.
He liked his chicken, which I admit, looked good, but that ain't enough to get three stars, so I'll be generous w/two.
It just makes me feel better to tell myself that this place is run by xeni. -

Serves decent Greek and mediterranean food for the Capitol Hill crowd, good outdoor seating when the weather's nice, convenient location for lunch during the work-week for Hill staffers and visitors to Congress... Sometimes the wait can be long for the food to be brought out, though. But unlike other nearby restaurants, getting a table at lunchtime with a big group of people isn't too tough.

Apparently this place is now under new management and called Zack's Taverna. A friend and I ended up at the bar here after finding Sonoma to be too crowded. Its a great place for a quiet spot to talk and they pour full glasses of wine into tumbler-type glasses, not wine glasses, so you definitely get your money's worth. I was not overly impressed by the hummus. The last bite contained two large pieces of raw onion which made me fearful of my breath the entire night. We also had to ask for more pita bread; the large bowl of hummus came with only 4 wedges. Overall I don't think the experience was horrible. If nothing else the ambiance of the bar is reminiscent of a late 70s pizzeria which is somehow charming. A nice place to escape the louder Hill bars if that's what you seek. O-pa!

Very mediocre. Saganaki was doused for too long, and not enough lemon. I had the Chicken Souvalaki sandwhich and fries, it was really mediocre. Doubt I'll go back any time soon.

I am a fan of their take-out Gyros. Their service is poor and ambiance is sub par as well. However, you can run downstairs to their take out counter and get a something to go. I recommend their Gyros to-go, that's it.

Spike from Top Chef recommended this place to me and my friends. You'd think since he's Greek he'd know what he was talking about. But just like Spike's frozen scallop debacle that got him eliminated from Top Chef, this place was a huge disappointment. This is probably why when we saw Spike he was ordering 25cent wings from Capitol South and not taking his own advice and eating at the the Greek place. My chicken was dry and the potatoes we're decently seasoned but undercooked. The service was mediocre just like the food. We sat outside and it was incredibly annoying because somebody at another table was playing music from a stereo really loudly, like for the entire neighborhood to hear. I can't think of one thing I liked about this place. I think even my soda was watered down.

Now it's actually called "Zack's" something-or-other, and in addition to degrading wait service, the quality of the food is now pretty dismal. I hate to give this place up, but I've sworn not to go back three times now because of these problems. I'll miss the good old days, Taverna, but it's over.

Hmmm so my friends and I were really hungry and tired of walking around after happy hour so we decided to stop here. I guess I shouldn't eat at Greek places because they are sure to disappoint me if they are not done right. The service was horrible, I was dying of thirst the whole time like where were my refills. I ordered a gyro and it was horrible. It was basically a salt lick, i know they are usually salty but this was to another level. The tzatziki was bad too, i think it had chunks of feta in it which isn't cool because it was probably domestic and i don't eat the cheap junk. I was also craving oven potatoes so I ordered that instead of french fries and they were the driest blandest things ever. I think the only decent thing on the menu was the bread rolls because they probably came from somewhere else. I will not return here and I hate when a place claims to be authentic Greek food and the kitchen and management are not anywhere near Greek.

This Restaurant is Closed and under renovation to be converted into (I think) an Italian Restaurant. If you want good Greek food, head up to Eastern Market!

I have always been a fan of this place and am sorry to hear it got bought out by Spike the guy next door. The chicken souvlaki and greek salads were great and service always friendly. Zack's is a hill institution. Sad.
