I ate here yesterday for the first time. I was meeting a girlfriend of mine to talk business, and I wanted to go somewhere fun, but low-key enough for us to be able to chat and be ourselves. It ended up being the perfect place for that.
It wasn't crowded in the least, so we were seated immediately. I ordered two small plates--the rockfish and the spinach salad--and my friend ordered one (grilled octopus.) All of our food was delicious. Not just good. Really good. My spinach salad was perfectly seasoned and peppered, and had little chunks of pancetta in it; the rockfish was flaky and tender, but crisp on the outside and served with a wonderful tomato-based sauce. From what I heard, the grilled octo also made the grade.
The only problem was that it took a while for our waitress to take our order. That might have also been due to our excessive chatting, so I can't really hold it against her.
I just ate here for restaurant week, and we were all quite happy. As they do tapas, we picked three items from a list, and then got a complimentary dessert as well. The five of us enjoyed everything we got, with the exception of a gorgonzola tagliatelle that was bland (seemed like the gorgonzola might have been left out, or there definitely wasn't enough of it). Highlights included an amazingly tender and flavorful lamb chop, delicious melon & prosciutto, and perfectly cooked & seasoned jumbo prawn. We were seated in the bar section and enjoyed the ambiance for the most part. Our waiter was great and very helpful with questions (especially when we were trying to pick a wine) and was attentive without hovering. All in all a wonderful experience and I look forward to going back.
Taverna Corvino was a different type of Italian experience than I am used to having. We were seated in the back of the dimly lit restaurant. It definitely had a romantic vibe. We decided to go the "tapas" route and try a bunch of different things. The bread served at the beginning of the meat was accompanied by this great eggplant spread. Even my non-eggplant eating boyfriend enjoyed it. Highlights include the salt baked prawns and grilled calamari. The oil served with the prawns was so good that we kept it at our table. The grilled artichokes were also decent. I thought that the tagliatelle with chestnuts could have used a little more flavor. We tried two different types of Valpolicella and were very happy with both of them. Our server was very friendly and happy to recommend items on the menu. I think that this might be a better place to sit at the bar and have something small to eat. It is a nice addition to the Federal Hill restaurant scene.
if i could give them half a star, i would. i went there earlier this evening with my sister's boyfriend only because every other place was packed (AC Milan vs Chelsea soccer game) except this one. that probably should've given us a hint. way over-priced mediocre food and the service was just sloppy. the complimentary bread was brought out the same time as my panini, and my sister's boyfriend didn't get his "panini" (the cold cut one...basically a sub...shouldnt even be under paninis) until a good 20 minutes after mine was brought out. our water/beer glasses were never refilled. and these are all things that i would normally let slide if the place was busy and packed, but it wasn't. so many empty tables. a disappointment to say the least.
Just opened where Vespa use to be in Fed Hill. Great Atmosphere. Has a kinda small Vegas lounge feel to it. Wine list was small but well priced and a nice variety. We had a great Waiter named Jeff who was incredibly knowledgeable. They've only been open a week, but the service was pretty spot on. I saw the http://Citypeek.com review that talked about raved about the grilled Calamari. It was different than I'd read about, but that's to be expected in a new restaurant. The calamari was perfectly cooked, nice and tender, but the sauce was a little complicated for my taste, but really interesting. We started with some amazing refreshing orange vodka sparkling cocktails, had a great malbec, and the table shared some amazingly interesting small plates artisan prepared prawns, octo, lamb chops, etc. The night ended on a sidewalk deck with a great cote du rhone and a cheese plate our waiter picked out.
