Look, you can take the boy off the ranch, but you can't take the ranch outta the boy. God knows, I spent enough years trying. And, eventually, I had to learn to accept that truth we all eventually reach: we can't escape the past. Thus, better to learn to embrace it.
And so, hanging in my closet, alongside my Paul Frederick custom-tailored french cuffed shirts, and my Charles Tyrwitt Bond Street specials, I have shirts from Lou Taubert, possibly the best western apparel store outside of Texas. And in the bottom of my closet, next to my Bostonians and Sperry's, I have a pair of Ariats that ask me, now and then, where all the horses went.
And every now and then, I wear one to the office, or out to eat. I wear the Ariats on a rainy day (whoever said leather doesn't like rain never properly treated a pair of full-grain leather boots) and walk right through the puddles. And as I look out at my fellow city dwellers, possessing the charm and sophistication they would expect me to lack, I remind myself: none of you SOBs has ever wrestled a 300-pound calf to the ground.
Put that in your penny loafers and smoke it.
