An awesome and beautiful creature, doing what came naturally to her, and shot dead as a result.

RIP Tatiana. I'm sorry you got killed for following your natural instincts, and I'm sorry you were locked in that depressing, stark zoo.

I hope you're in tiger heaven now, but really - this planet is going to hell...you're probably better off.

In early December we had the pleasure of seeing Tatiana on a Saturday morning at the SF Zoo .

She was one beautiful exotic sexy feline. Easily 600+ lbs of striped badonkadonk. Such wonderful colors, and elegance! The lions looked mighty unkempt in comparison.

Her male companion nearby was easily much bigger. But somehow she had a coolest "don't F**K with me" vibe about her that commanded the utmost respect, awe, and appreciation.

I am saddened by this loss.

Ironically while going through my old Marvel comic book collection (clutter rather), I found and leafed through an issue of Silver Surfer from the early 1990s It was either issue #54 or #56 that was quite apt to this tale. This surfer dude was somehow taking a break from the Infinity Gauntlet wars, fighting The Rhino from the Spiderman comic. The Rhino broke into a zoo and tried to set a tiger free. The end result of the story was that during the tiger's escape, it had threatened the life of zoo goers, and a police officer reacted by shooting it to death. The only difference here between comic book and reality, is that we have no Silver Surfer using "cosmic powers" to restore life to the tiger, which happened in the comic book. The Rhino realized that the zoos were there for a reason, to keep the wild animals "from harm".

RIP Tatiana. May you be reincarnated into an even more noble carnivorous creature (anything except a politician).

Matt's 700th review is dedicated to the San Francisco Zoo's biggest and courageous attraction: Tatiana the 350 lb. Siberian tiger, who was fatally shot and died on December 25, 2007.

In 2004, the Fantastic-4 was very fortunate to have made a trip to the San Francisco Zoo, and was extremely privileged to have met the up and coming feline and her attraction. We thought the she was the biggest thing in San Francisco since the grand-opening of the San Francisco Giant's newest ballpark. Her tiger skin inspires wife to buy a pair of tiger-skin lingerie for the feline's sexy and suave move across the cage.

What people don't realize is that being in the wildlife is not an easy living.  Tigers are one of the dangerous creatures living at captivity. These three street-punks found out the "difficult" way.

On Christmas day of 2007, three boys were at the San Francisco Zoo and for some evidential cause; Tatiana escaped from her cage and attacked the three kids, fatally killing one of the boys. Tatiana's escape from her cage terrified other spectators including the San Francisco Police Dept., in which they have no choice in shooting and justifiably killing the Siberian Feline.

Miraculously, two of the victims were sent to the San Francisco General Hospital and made a full recovery physically, but not mentally. The surviving punks were very lucky, they were alive or else they would've not only died, but get eaten like Matt eating a drumstick at KFC. The two survivors refused to confess to the authorities, whether foul-play were involved. The case is still unsolved.

In present time, many concerned San Francisco Zoo's official, city officials and other disturbed citizen are having an ongoing testimony about a future plan of the zoo's system. On an unrelated matter, many citizens felt that what SFPD did was unnecessary and inhumane.

According to the Criminal Justice System, if your life is at risk, the use of deadly force is highly necessary. I mean, what does SFPD know about controlling a dangerous 400lb. Siberian Tiger? What the agency did was the right thing, but other people thought it was uncalled for and remain a controversy.

In conclusion, Tatiana is in a better place right now and joining other celebrities who died in 2007, including Captain America.

    RIP: Tatiana the Siberian Tiger

"In the 1930's the Siberian Tiger population had fallen to as low as 20, but they recovered quickly under the protection from hunting.  Once numbering as many as 2,000, the Siberian tiger now has an estimated population between 300 to 400 in the wild.

Poaching of tigers and its prey, increased logging and construction of roads, forest fires and inadequate law enforcement are threats that affect the survival of the species. As with all endangered species genetic diversity is key to its survival, if the population becomes too small and genetically similar (as with cheetahs) they do not adapt well and are vulnerable. Ultimately the entire health of the ecosystem is at stake.

It is a shame this rare Siberian Tiger was in this zoo and the entire incident tragic (any pathetic taunting and lack of action on the zoo's part to act on such behavior included)

    By definition: BADASS MOFO!!!

Tatiana was like Rocky... people were always hating. And being a fighter at heart she took what was hers.

I remember this one time we had strolled all the way down to the Beach Challet, you know, doing a little of this, a little that. Good conversation. People were being all mean to Tatiana. F* them. Let them sink to the bottom of the bay I would yell. Tatiana always kept her cool. But I guess she lost it bro. Can you blame her?

    RIP.

"In some ways, people are a lot like animals. We all hunger for the same things. Love, lust, danger, warmth and adventure. Like people, animals all have their own rhythm to life. I'm mesmerized by tigers. Their eyes, their stripes, their constant quest for survival. They almost have a sense of mysteriousness about them.

They pull you in and make it difficult to look away. They make you wonder what is behind their gaze. A sense of eerie awe comes over you in their presence. The fear they give you when you pass them is stunning. Behold the beauty of the tiger."

    "What happened to her?

It looks like her heart gave out in all the excitement.

    Yeah.

She was plenty old, you know?

    Look...

    I think she's smiling.

Yeah. I guess she died happy.

She died with her boots on, that's the main thing."

How stupid can you be, throwing stuff at a wild animal?  It's too bad any deaths had to occur over this, especially the tiger!  She was defending herself and how do tigers defend themselves?  DUH!

Why didn't they use darts to put her down rather than killing her?

    She was absolutely beautiful!

Now I hear that lawyers are trying to close the zoo.  My only question is, is there room in the tiger cage for the lawyers?  The lawyers should be going after the parents for what their kids did to the tiger!  They are at fault for the loss of this beautiful creature.  However, the lawyers only want to go after big money!

There are like 6 billion people on the planet versus about 5000 tigers. Unlike humans, tigers don't really kill things for no reason.

Why was the zoo open on Xmas? And who would let their teenagers runaround unsupervised with alcohol? Poor Tatiana...killed for being the only one who was probably doing what she was supposed to be doing.

On the East side of Coit Tower, down the Greenwich steps halfway to Sansome, a local artist has made a memorial statue to honor Tatiana the Tiger. I suggest walking from the bottom and up, and you'll see on the right hand side a cobblestone path lined with wood planks (not somebody's backyard!) that leads to an opening. At the top of the slope in the brush, you'll see a mosaic painted life size statue of the tiger underneath a small banana tree. The memorial marks the one year anniversary of the death of the tiger that everyone, except for these Yelpers, forgets to mourn.

    RIP Tatiana!

I do not understand why they should kill a tiger for doing what a tiger does best. Hunt.

I am not against zoos, but I am against improper cage facilities and people taunting animals (if that is true).

It won't hunt people again if you are able to keep it inside its own cage.

I think it was yelper TomL. who mentioned that there is all this outcry about the killed tiger but:
"Number of Yelp eulogies for murdered SF humans.... ?"

While this is true, and a good point...  there are plenty of people who will speak for the dead boy in this case, but no tigers to speak for Tatiana.  I think that is why people feel compelled to say something.

But my main concern is that We, as San Franciscans, will probably wind up paying for this with our tax dollars when the families sue the zoo. Basically, the city (meaning: you and me) will have to pay some huge sum because some teenagers decided to go beyond the point where they were allowed to go and f*ck with a tiger, (allegedly).

So don't worry, the boys will have a team of lawyers speaking for them.  And because the wall, which has been there for decades without incident, seems to have been shorter than regulation, they'll probably win the case.  And much needed city money will go into the pockets of these boy's families and their lawyers.

I wish the ZOO would of acted fast than both the kid and the tiger would of been saved.  I know it was the kids fault for bothering the peaceful tiger in her surrounding.   It seem like the people that visit the zoo didn't know how to communicate with Zoo attendants. The zoo was about to close there was so much confusion because people didn't know how to talk.  She was a strong tiger.  really beautiful she remind me of my cat with white chest.
