6 reviews for Tate's Comics Toys Videos and More
This place is about as good as it gets for your big fans of anything geekish. I don't know of a better location in South Florida for your comics, anime, horror, collectibles, or gaming (conveniently located next door).
Also, much of the staff is fairly knowledgeable and most are fans themselves.
Their subscriber discounts aren't that great, but their back issue collection and selection of genre videos is second to none.
The only reason I don't shop there any more is that I simply don't live close enough.
This place is dangerous, and by dangerous I mean hide your wallet if a visual blitzkreig of comics, action figures and anime instantly makes you want to buy everything you see. That usually happens to me, especially with brightly colored objects or cute things--I'm a marketing team's dream!
Tate's is the premiere comic book store in South Florida. Back in my youngin' days, Tropic Comics was the place to go in Dade County for your geek fix. When that place closed years ago, it seemed like my only comic book purchasing options were from the internet or random little stores. I had been hearing about Tate's from all of my comic book loving friends for ages, but because of the distance from my home I never made it up there.
So, when a friend of mine was displaying on of her pieces at Bear and Bird, the store's 2nd floor art gallery, I finally made the drive to support her and was totally blown away by this store! There is something to look at in every single inch of the store, from Japanese candy to statuettes of your favorite hero or heroine. There are posters, t-shirts, comic book back-issues and new issues to browse through. How-to books, complete with a small selection of art supplies, are a great feature along with the shelf of local comic books--hold a spot there for me! Their graphic novel selection beats anything Barnes and Noble could have, especially now with the manga takeover of every B+N and Borders reducing the number traditional comic shelves to one.
There are also great little finds like Tokidoki collectible figurines, munnys, and wonderful art books by US and International artists. The store holds regular sales and Japanese candy tasting events, so sign up for their newsletter! I called them up to hold a copy of Tori Amos' "Comic Book Tattoo" for me and they did so without a problem. The staff loves comics just as much as you do, and they're helpful and down to earth.
My only quip, but it is something understandable, is the price of their Japanese magazines and books like the Gothic Lolita Bible. These things are hard to find in South Florida and buying anything direct from Japan is expensive, however these items can typically be found cheaper on http://Amazon.com. The store may be bit hard to find for those unfamiliar with the area like I was, as the shopping centers are very similar in appearance. I drove past it the first time, but afterwards it's easy to get there.
Other than that, Tate's is worth the drive from any South Florida spot, so bring your paycheck! You'll probably want to spend it all, and I'm sure the awesome goodies you go home with won't leave any room for buyer's remorse.
Tate's is great! I've been collecting comics since I was ten and Tate's is by far the biggest and best comic store that I have been too. They have a huge back issue collection, an enormous selection of trades and graphic novels. I've found that if by some tiny chance they do not have what I am looking for they will order it and I will get it within a week or two.
The staff they have working there is great. I find the girls to be much friendlier and outgoing than the guys but regardless they are all still eager to help.
Tate's has a subscription program that is very convenient. Basically you fill out what new comics you want pulled every week and they place them in a box for you. I think they can accumulate for up to six weeks which is great if you don't like making the drive out to Tate's on a weekly basis. The subscription also gets you 10% off so its a win/win situation.
Tate's is equally known for its anime collection of movies and rentals, its collectible toys, and an abundance of weird, miscellaneous items that are scattered throughout the store.
Tat'es fulfills my every nerdgasm.
I agree, Tate's is the best comic shop in South Florida. Sadly, I never really discovered it until I was leaving the area, although that was before they moved to the newer, much bigger location. I remember it being a small, cramped store, exploding with comics, anime, toys, models, and pretty much anything else that goes with those. The new store is much nicer, for sure, and it's nice not to have to squeeze past everyone just to move around. The staff has always been friendly and courteous, and seem to take a genuine interest in what they're selling. I still try to make a trip there when I'm in the area. (I put $ for price range since you can spend as much or as little as you want, and there's stuff in the store that costs less than a buck.)
I can't say that Tate's is the best comic book store in South Florida, but it's certainly the premiere (and probably the best) Anime store in the area. The storefront is huge and you can find a huge selection of anime titles, Japanese candy, comic books, and paraphernalia. They have a huge Anime DVD rental library and an interesting collection of movie props and other items (not for sale) that are fun to visit. The staff is friendly and although we weren't regular customers (with a weekly pull, for instance), we enjoyed driving down for the occasional visit.
The best comic book store in South Florida. Tate's has been my gold standard for comic shops since I was a young pre-teen punkass kid who collected Marvel Comics and started getting into Sailor Moon (yeah, that's right I said it!). I've been here before they expanded into the big space they're in now. Tate's a local institution that's run by a guy who genuinely loves comics/animation and his dad gets behind the counter too. What makes Tate's so awesome is his huuuuuuge niche for Japanese animation/manga and its byproducts (Tate's been into that scene since at least the early 90s--since I was introduced it to it). Heck, he started a video rental service because of it pretty much. You can rent the obscure, bootleg stuff here and they carry Asian films too (Battle Royale, Godzilla stuff, Asian horror). They also got cute plushies, wall scrolls, creepy 3d model toys, etc. that would be great for your cousin/niece/nephew/sibling/yourself. I can't say enough, if you love comics/anime, you have to visit this place.
