The Staff is great., especially Brittany.
This is a Sausalito Landmark.
I only wish they would serve hamburgers like Marin Joes, and I would be more of a regular.

Since it was new years eve, I figured the quality of food at any place we'd go to in Sausalito would be blah. Turns out I was wrong!!!
Service here was pretty bad, and a tad unfriendly (probably because the place was packed and because these poor servers were having to work a holiday), but my plate of spaghetti, meat sauce and Italian sausage was fantastic! My friends pizza was also quite tasty and so was my other friends salmon salad. I applaud this place for pulling off a good meal for us new years eve, even though it was ridiculously busy. -

Cute Italian cafe/coffee shop near the water. Food was a little overpriced for food but probably on par for the area. I ordered the eggplant parm and it was well portioned and delicious. The cappuccino was well executed and definitely hit the spot.
The place itself was cozy but not crowded, plenty of people reading newspapers and sipping coffee to give it a relaxed feel. -

You're a tourist reading this, right? Looking for breakfast, are you? Sure, this quaint and comely place brings you a little back to the spirit of Rome, Italy. For breakfast nook presentation, its pretty neat & hard to beat (its also over-popular and crowded). But still, I'd much rather have the food three blocks down the street on the left at "The Lighhouse Cafe," specifically speaking, their TripleDecker B.L.T., the boffo socko granddaddy of all B.L.T.s. This "Lighthouse" ain't as sleek, but its a cute mom and pop joint. Shucks, stick to this "Rome" if you're willing to go for okay-nothing-special omelettes and muffins.

My wife and I stopped in to have lunch. We were greeted immediately and everyone was really friendly. I bought the spaghetti with meat sauce which was pretty good. My wife had the Panini sandwich with prosciutto, mozzarella and tomato. It was off the charts.
I do want to go back and try the breakfast items, everything looked pretty tasty. -

This is a cute little Italian cafe near the water. They don't have the best view, but the food is good and the prices are reasonable. The dishes are about $9.95-$14.95 for a decent sized portion. They have lots of hot and cold coffees as well as a few pastries and gelato ice cream too. I think that this place is one of the more popular spots for tourists and the locals as it was crowded. Then again, it was Labor Day weekend and there was a big art festival going on nearby.
Anyways, both my husband and I got the chicken parmigiana. It came with two average sized pieces of chicken breast and a side of pasta and green beans and garlic bread. It wasn't the best I ever had, but it was still good. They also serve breakfast here. You can either get quiche, a frittata, an American omelet, etc.. You order and pay at the counter. There are only two unisex bathrooms there and the seats are a little too close together, so those are the only two bad things about this place. There is outdoor seating in the front and at the side as well as an ATM inside by the bathrooms. -

I loved the vibe of the place. It is a order at the counter and the food will be delivered deal. I had a latte when I first got there while I waited for the rest of our party. It was a good latte...nothing to get steamy about but a solid cup of artificial energy. I had the veggie burger for lunch. Once again nothing to go crazy over but it was a good sandwich. The salad on the side was great but nothing to turn vegetarian over. The patrons of Taste of Rome felt very "i got rich during the dot com boom so I am going to pretend I am working on something on my laptop and suck down cappuccinos all day. Don't get me wrong...I wish I was one of them. Overall...great, solid restaurant.

Sausalito, CA
I have been going to this place for about 20+ years. I have watched it go through many incarnations, with different remodels, owners, and management. I have mostly loved this place, but that has changed recently. The food is average to perhaps a little above average. So why the 1-star rating??? I usually go here to study, and typically bring many classmates as we can take a food break(s) and recharge. The food is quite expensive, but we are really paying for the convenience of wi-fi, food and a laid back environment. The coffee has suddenly become undrinkable. It is actually pretty foul now. But even this would not warrant a 1-star rating in my book. What has really done them in, for me, is that today they decided to request that my group (mid-meal) "remove ourselves for other customers." Evidently, they thought that by having us leave that they would be making room for others to enjoy the table. This might even make sense in the case that we were holding up the turnover of a table, albeit rude. However, there were no customers waiting for a table. There were other, open tables. And there was even a larger table with only a solitary woman, reading a book, with no food or drink. Bottom line...if you are not planning on spending a lot of money and getting out of there quickly, be prepared to be confronted with this type of customer service. Also, the average quality of the food has never been worth suffering such rudeness. I will not be going back here, nor will I be sending my friends and family or colleagues here any longer.

This used to be cafe Trieste way back in the day and still holds a lot of its old school charm. It is quiet cute with a good outside area and place to hang out.
Plus a decent menu, nothing really amazing very standard Italian cafe fare. The place has tons of art. It is a great little stop and reasonable. It makes more sense to eat here then do the tourist thing. -

After biking from the wharf all the way to sausalito, this pizza place definitely hit the spot!
This is a cute little italian cafe near the water, but further down sausalito. We were lucky to grab a nice spot outside for a party of 8. Ordering is at the front and they will eventually bring your food to your table. Many of us ordered different types of pizzas and fettucini alfredo plates. I shared a prosciutto pizza, which was simple but delicious! I love thin slice pizzas and this was it! I had some few bites from the pasta, and I thought it was delicious also! Haven't had fettucini alfredo in ages! or maybe I was just too tired from the bike ride :P
We shared a bottle of cabernet sauvignon to wine us down before our last miles to Tiburon.
Bathrooms are shared with other stores nearby so be ready for a wait!
I am sure there are better restaurants in downtown but for decent, and quick food, try this place out! -

More than the sum of its parts.
There is a certain non tangible charm about this place. In a tourist trap haven, where merchants love to take advantage of patrons by overpricing and under delivering, this place provides decent food, free wifi, lots of different coffee drinks and does so with a welcoming local charm.
The staff is always pleasant, and in a town of transient day tourers, this place seems to pull in the local crowd. Lots of seafaring folks come here to have a simple meal , a beer and check some email, and in some odd way it just works.
Its not gourmet, but its homey. The food is what you'd expect, but the vibe is just very comfortable and inviting.
If you live in the area and need a hangout to get some work done, or have a non rediculously overpriced meal, give this place a shot - it will grow on you. -

Came here with the sister on a sunday night. Jazz band was playing.
Got some kind of a pizza with pesto sauce and spinach.. not good. tasted very off for some reason (but still beat that disgusting commercial pizza i.e. dominos).
Sister got pesto cheese tortellini. Beat the pizza but was still not that good.
The food here is definitely not authentic Italian (more like a fail attempt at creating Italian) but honestly the service was GREAT. The people were so friendly and the busboy was the NICEST busboy I've ever seen. The three stars would have been one had it not been for the service.
Forgot to mention that the food was a bit overpriced. -

I hadn't been to this place for a while because I thought it turned into a restaurant only when it became Taste of Rome. I didn't realize that it stayed much the same as it was when it was Cafe Trieste (which was a favorite of mine.) I had a croissant and a cappuccino. Both were solid. This is such a great place to bike to, everyone is hanging out in their bike gear sipping coffee and eating bagels. I don't know if I would ever go for a plate of pasta here, but it is the spot for a snack and people-watch. It can be fun to talk to people sitting by you- it's a big mix of locals, tourists, and a whole bunch of cyclists.

For the only thing open after 3 p.m. in Sausalito to eat, this place was the last resort, but fate must have led us here, because it was one of the most authentic Italian places I've eaten at; well the pizza was. The workers were Indian and Mexican, so I don't know how they did it but they made a legit thin-crusted, spinach-pesto pizza, my sister just got back from Rome this summer, and said this Sausalito pizza was even better than the one in Italy. The chicken on top was a little dry, but overall the dough and pizza was amazing. The gelato looked great, and the cappuccinos/lattes looked genuine as well.

Stopped by here for a healthy lunch after biking to Sausalito from the city. There were many burger and seafood places along the way but I was aiming for something good and healthy after burning all those calories. I figured a salad or such would be easy to find here.
I was actually surprised at the size of the menu offered. Not only were there salads and pasta and pizza options, but paninis, burgers, and breakfast foods. They also have a very large set up of coffee machines for espresso, cappuccino coffee, tea, steamed milk, etc.
I ordered the Margarita Panini (mushrooms, tomatoes, red peppers, mozzarella, seasonings) along with a raspberry Italiana soda. Despite the place being very busy, there were still places to sit inside and I managed to score a table outside by the road so I could enjoy the weather.
I was a bit surprised that the panini came less as a sandwich and more as a slice of bread with toppings on it and the cut slice for the top on the side. I had to eat it with a fork and knife and not like a sandwich. Overall though it was very good and just the sandwich and assorted salad veggies around the plate filled me up quite nicely.
I'm definitely up for checking out the pasta and pizzas next time I'm in the area. -

This place gets one star for outside sitting area. I love Sausalito, and if I can enjoy it while sitting outside - that's a whole star. Unfortunately everything else about this cafe falls very very short.
Now, I have learned long time ago not to expect much from touristy areas food-wise. There is very few places on Bridgeway that are worth eating in, unless you are so hungry that you just want to shove something into your belly to get you by for couple of hours. I don't know what possessed us to drive past Poggio this time, and right into the Taste of Rome... maybe we forgot how much we didn't like the food there the first time we visited (about a year ago?).
We have ordered a bruschetta and two orders of paninis. Bruschetta is the type of dish that is hard to mess up. If you put together quality ingredients - it can still be good, even if it is not the best one you ever had. This particular bruschetta was bad. WHERE in the midst of tomato season (ok, it is near the end of tomato season, but still...) they managed to find those tasteless, pale, and very unappetizing to even look at tomatoes - is beyond me. That just killed the whole dish right there. I don't normally even salt things, because I enjoy the flavors of ingredients so much. Here I had to grab the salt shaker, so that my taste buds don't boycott me.
When panini arrived (husbands was with meat, and mine was veggie), the waitress who brought them handed my husband a meat one, and then kept asking him "Veggie?" while I am sitting there waiving "Me! Me!". She actually kept standing there, looking totally blank, and still not putting the plate down til I grabbed it from her. Seriously, there is only two of us at the table, who do you think the other dish is for?? She actually smiled a with a relief when I took the plate from her... Tough day I guess... Our request to please pick up the bruschetta and bread plates were completely ignored.
Personally, I think waiting tables is the toughest job in the world, so my review is not affected by this particular waitress performance whatsoever. Just the food.
The paninis were just gross. When you pay $10 for a two slices of soggy bread, some avocado and roasted eggplant (or in my husbands case, few pale pink tomatoes and turkey with iceberg lettuce), eat only half and don't even ask for the other half to be boxed in for later consumption - that's bad. Both dishes lacked any type of flavor whatsoever and just looked unappealing.
All and all, this was our last visit to this place. I do not recommend it, unless you just want coffee and a sunny spot to chill outside. -

Unless you've got a friend to visit or need a place to take your sailboat, I don't really see the point of going to Sausalito.
That said:
The other day we decided to take a spontaneous ride on the ferry to see our friend in Sausalito, but she was sick and unable to entertain visitors. So we stopped in at Taste of Rome for a quick snack of a little pizza before heading back across the water.
The pizza was really good. Thin but not too crunchy crust, a nice sauce, and just the right amount of cheese.
The service was very friendly. -

This place has changed names a few times - but basically has remained consistent over the years. I used to hang out here some 16 years ago... when it was Cafe Trieste. I still remember the dude "Slim" behind the counter. Some of the same customers still hang out there today - it's almost like they have not aged in over a decade... weird. Wonder what they put in the coffee to do that?
Anyway - back to the review. Coffee is good. Tea is good. Desserts are excellent (three cheers to Black Forrest Cake - yummy!). Pizzas are good. Beer and wine are good. You can have a glass of wine, a beer and a large pizza - plenty of food for dinner for 2... for around $25. Sweet!
Service is great, too!
Only drawback... it can get really loud in there. Especially on a Friday or Saturday night. If you want to converse, or think, or not have your ears ringing for hours (okay I'm exaggerating a bit) - maybe avoid Friday or Saturday. If you want more of a party atmosphere - perhaps a Friday night might be right up your alley! -

Really nice cosy cafe away from the hustle and bustle of the main town area. The food is great. Portions are huge for the price you are paying also, great coffees. I mean, what else can you get from a little humble cafe like this.

Another attempt to finding good food in Sausalito and I felt a bit disappointed again. I ordered their spaghetti with mussels and found the dish to be so fishy and was a bit disappointed since I really do want some marina sauce on it as well ... It would have definitely helped kill a bit of the fishy taste to the mussels. The service here is good though and the people are nice. Maybe I'll come again and try something else ...

El Sobrante, CA
It was an awesome warm sunny day in sausalito. My ex-roomie took the ferry from San Francisco and we decided to hop in here for lunch seeing that it's garnered 3-and-a-half stars from fellow Yelpers.
The few tables outside and the swirling cool breeze was too enticing to ignore the call. We both went in looking forward to a great lunch to start the day right.
The interiors were nice and warm and that they kept the huge large "window" open allowed the breeze to flow in and regal the patrons inside equally well.
We started off with the Mango smoothie and I must admit it was just awesome, considering the warm day, and set the bar pretty high for the rest of the meal. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Alas, I am sad to say it was pretty much downhill all the way from then on.
The margherita pizza we decided to share was such a waste of the wood-fired oven they had. There was too much cheese, hardly any tomato sauce in some places, and the essence-less basil was as good as absent! The slices of tomatoes on the pizza was almost adding insult to injury. As you can see from the picture, there is a layer of cheese and crust but hardly any sauce. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese and he decided on the "Noodles & Garlic (fettuccine) pasta".
The pasta unequivocally bombed! The spaghetti bolognese was awful; the spaghetti had a texture that suggested it was cooked the day before and merely reheated in hot water before tossing it in the bolognese sauce. I definitely get 'underdone' (they have a chewy texture inside but soft and smooth on the outside) but this one was clearly stale in that it didn't roll up around my fork smoothly but *bent* instead --- like a crisply starched fabric ! I couldn't eat beyond 1/3rd of the serving.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I tried a few strands of my friend's entree and his fettuccine too had the same unacceptable texture. The noodles and garlic were practically drowning in olive oil (as evidenced by the picture).
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Speaking of oily: When I bit into my garlic bread, a gob of oil ran down my hand!
For me, there is absolutely nothing like bad food that is guaranteed to bring out the darker side. I feel that, more than the money spent, the occupation of my tummy's 'real-estate' without the concomitant satisfaction is an utter and horrible waste of my resources and is practically sacrilegious!
And hence, I got into nitpicking mode:
The server brought out just one tiny dinner roll sized plate (practically saucer-like) with the pizza. We had to ask for two decently sized plates for the pizza -- something large enough to hold a single slice at least.
The pizza was sliced haphazardly: it was sliced in quarters and apparently someone decided to run the pizza-cutter through it one more time so we had 6 uneven slices -- two humongous quarters and 4 manageable slices --- one would expect a 14" pizza to be cut into 6-8 equal (more-or-less) slices.
They forgot my lemonade so I had to ask for it in the middle of my meal.
The restroom was out of soap, and the faucet handle twisted to the right let out hot water instead of cold.
That was a $60 lunch down the drain!!! In hindsight, the tip seemed too much for a joint where you place your order at the counter only to receive a mediocre service at best.
Thanks for spoiling my sunny day! -
Review from Dave H.
Small, charming, and decent - just like I like my women.
Seriously, Taste of Rome is a solid lunch spot, not horrible, not amazing, and away from the tourists. (Most of them anyway, since I definitely qualify as a tourist.) The restaurant is right on the water (like everything else in Sausalito), and easy to get to. It's largely self-service here: check out their menu, order at the counter, seat yourselves, then wait for your dishes to be brought over.
Shared a refreshing garden salad with friends, as well as a Margherita pizza with chicken. Crust had a light bite, and the sauce was nice and mellow. Three of us worked on a plate of lasagna too, which was fine. Overall, a good value - thanks to a friend for paying! Since some of us had to get back to work, we skipped on beer and wine - I noticed gelato, too, but went for ice cream down the street.
If you're in the neighborhood, Taste of Rome will do in a pinch! Just don't expect spectacular food. -

We came here for lunch on a Saturday after biking across the GG bridge from SF. Needless to say, we were pretty hungry for some carbs! We had a group of 9 and found seating outside. It was a bit cold and windy that day, but it was really nice to have the option to sit outside and watch all the expensive cars drive by.
The restaurant is also a coffee shop where you order at the counter and the bus boys bring the food to you. Seven of us shared 2 large pizzas: The Sausalito (Mozzarella, Pesto, Spinach & Chicken) & The Salsiccia- (Mozzarella, Tomato Sauce with choice of Salami, Italian Sausage or Pepperoni). Both pizzas were delicious! They totally reminded me of the pizzas in Italy, not the greasy stuff you find in America. The bill came out to be about $5 per person. I definitely could have eaten more, but did not want to fight food coma while making the grueling climb back to SF. The service was fast and friendly and the location is great. I will be back next time to try the pastas! They looked pretty yummy! -

You know what makes me laugh? I'm pretty sure the people of Sausalito think they have the only Caffe Trieste on the planet. They don't know that there are some dirty, grungy, far more bohemian Cafe Triestes across the bridge in "the city," all sporting that same Italian-flag color scheme on their awnings. Get this: it's a franchise! EEK!
Regardless, THIS Caffe Trieste is 100% Sausalito. Awesomely peaceful and charming. Good food. Good drinks. Great sidewalk dining. Great weather...
Oh, okay... They can't take credit for the weather. But every business in Sausalito gets an extra star in my book, just for their Sausalito weather. Because I likely visited you on a day when the sun was shining, and therefore I was in that much better of a mood, and therefore I was that much more generous with my stars.
But good LORD, Caffe Trieste: you are SLOW. I know the pace of life is probably a lot slower out here in the 'burbs, but I really don't want to GROW OLD AND DIE waiting for my salad. I'd like to live, so I can get back to my office and finish my crappy workday.
'K?
Thanks. -

HOLY F&*K WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME ABOUT SAUSALITO? I am, er, a little annoyed that I didn't get the memo whereby young, professional SF types can move across the Bay and have PANORAMIC VIEWS of the whole bay and alcatraz and boats and shit and see families with cute kids and doggies and pumpkins on their porches and it would cost the same as my Dive in the Castro? Next time, keep me in the loop and be handsomely rewarded.
(deep breath)
AND WHY didn't someone tell me this place has bomb ass pizza and salads and shit. I spent a good 20 minutes arguing about take out places with large party of football watchers on Sunday (i.e. too drunk to drive back across the Bay so let's have dinner here), and they WON and then I was so totally embarrassed when the food was tres tres good. Sorry Caffe Trieste for just thinking you were all about freaking coffee and shit.
I mean SHIT, send me the memos people. -

Because of a brief power outage, my friend and I decided to dine at Taste of Rome. From the outside, it seems like a quaint little place with an awning bearing Italy's 'ol colors and a classic coffee shop decor.
When you first go in, if you're lookin' to eat, grab a menu, grab a seat, then order at the counter. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere felt very comfortable. Granted, the seats and tables were somewhat on the cramped side, it's nothing to deter you from eating here. Upon reflection, I should've tried their coffee too!
I ordered their Chicken Fettucini (w/ mushroom, spinach, and cream sauce). I didn't expect much from this place, so this dish really surprised me. There was a substantial portion of fettucini along with two slices of garlic bread. Given how hungry I was, I was disappointed with how little I ate. Perhaps I'll return sometime in the future with a more MANLY appetite!
Our overall experience was quite good, I would say. I'd definitely recommend this place as decent Italian eats.
4 Stars for good measure. -

OK so I love this location and the coffee is excellent, BUT the people working there lack social skills. When I went there I barely got eye contact yet along verbal confirmation of my order. The two gentlemen working there were more concerned with the soccer game on TV then with the customers. I wasn't the only one getting neglected, other patrons were put on the backburner as well.
They also got my order wrong, probably because they were busy listening to the game.
I also got the coffee cake, which was yummy and the food also looks really good. However, it it really bums me out that the service was as good as the food. ;-( So for that reason they get 3 stars.Listed in: My favorite places to get…

I've been passing this place for two years. Thought it was just a corner coffee house. Not true. A small and very intimate restaurant with an extensive chalk board menu.
I had a glass of wine here with a new acquaintence this evening. Cozy little tables. Lots of intimate one-on-one conversations. I felt the World was being reordered and changed in each of those little conversations.
My World was. I felt it with each sip of wine. Things would never be the same. What was black & white will now be a VIVID RED. A whole new direction. Screaming down a tunnel!
All over an inexpensive, but good glass of wine at Caffe Trieste! -

Someone needs to write a song about this place.
When I wandered past this spot by myself last weekend, 'Sittin on the dock of the bay' just sprang to mind but I know this place could make a refresher on the SF music scene for sure....
I drank a latte, ate a scone, and just sat in the beauty of the atmosphere of this place and not to mention the scenery -
And I was reminded that beauty is all around the bay and its so funny how living in SF sometimes jades us in forgetting that... -

More like a 3.5 but id rather round down seeing as though I've only been here once. Well my uncle took us here to walk aalong the strip but nothing really caught my eye. While trying to figure out what to eat my uncle and I decided on this place. The service here is not really helpful so we had to try and catch the servers to ask how things work since it was our first time but it does seem like most of the customers are regulars so maybe that's why there's not much help to newbies. Also the place is pretty tight especially when it gets crowded since the tables and chairs are really close to each other.
As for the food I got the perfection sandwich which is a prosiutto, basil, pesto, tomato and mozzarella sandwich grilled on foccacia bread with a side salad and I thought that was good. The dressing on the salad was also good and not too overwhelming with dressing. As for my uncle and sis they ordered the meat lasagna and it looked good but didn't taste so idk. They also have desserts like gelato, cakes, cheesecakes, smoothies etc. -

Ordered two american breakfasts with hash brown and eggs. It was good. They however, screwed up the second order - it never came out. Had to go up, stand in line again, to see where it was. They appologized and put the order in again. When it came out the eggs were undercooked, the hash was raw, and the toast very light. Tasted good but was not impressed. Watching the women's world cup game, however, was a blast!!!!!!!

Mill Valley, CA
In my experience this place has two distinctive personalities, day and night. And the experience could not be farther apart!
Day: In the several times I've had breakfast or lunch at Taste of Rome, or even a cup of chai, the staff has been friendly, the food delightful and ambiance wonderful. Free Wi-Fi, interesting local characters and a large range of food items to choose from. The chef came out and talked with me once and was a total charmer. I would give the day time experience 4 stars, and I'll definitely be back during the day.
Night (Weekend): It was crowded and so noisy the patrons probably lost some hearing if lingering. The band, Neck & Neck, was either horrid or having a horribly off night. Neck & Neck was loud and the music mixing from the amplifier was not mixed well, the higher notes screeched as the scratchy voices sang. At the start of the band's break, they had feedback so loud and screechy for at least a minute as the duo was jumping around knocking the microphones around trying to turn off the sound. MAJOR OUCH!
The tables were pushed so closely together, there really was no aisle, this would NOT be a place to bring a handicapped friend at night. It was treacherous to navigate for anyone. The iced tea I was carrying was filled SO full that it was dripping over the side with the slightest move, and I was doing my best not to have it pour down someone's back. (Maybe I should have walked behind the band!)
My companion and I had lasagne. Both lasagnes were sized as very big portions in a 'gratin' style serving dish. Both servings suffered from hot and bubbly at the edges, and ice cold in the middle, and hot/cold around the inner edges. It was so crowded and we were so wedged in I thought it was just not worth it to risk dropping the dish on someone's head to get these back to the counter for further heating. It would have been nice if one of the staff had checked up on how things were. The ingredients inside seemed to be high quality and thoughtfully put together so it was a shame that it was finished so poorly. I took some home to reheat for another meal. I'm afraid that if this were my only experience here, I'd never return. I'd give it a grudging 1 star.
So how to give an overall rating to heaven and hell? Numerically the average between the day vs night experience is 2.5, but since the most recent experience was so bad, and we can't use decimals, I give it a 2-star rating until I can return and see it redeem itself. -

dare i forewarn this review that i just signed up for yelp to bag this place???
Almost $6 for a plain coffee and a croissant? Seriously? This is not Manhattan- Taking advantage of people pre-coffee should be outlawed.
Also, the coffee simply wasn't good. The staff wasn't nice. What would be the point of ever returning?
