Before I moved here I thought this festival was the best thing since sliced bread. Not anymore. The food sucks, the people suck, the conditions suck, and the price sucks.
But still I went during lunch break Haha!
Its a black hole of culinary treachery! Beware!
I would give this place ZERO stars if i could..........it's just filled with trash........or tourists. All you see is...............
1) Trash walking around knawing on big turkey drumsticks......then throwing them all over the floor
2) Trash walking around chomping on Corn on the Cob & Mayo.........then chucking those on the floor
3) Jean shorts and wife beaters
4) People pushing strollers with 4-5 kids lagging behind crying
5) People with no teeth and Body Odor
6) People wearing Black Jeans and gym shoes
7) The stench in those porta potties WOW!
8) Fat ladies in spandex biker shorts
9) MULLETS
10) Gang bangers with tilted hats and do rags
I mean it's not even fun. I have several friends who are cops and they were working it when "shootings" took place. WTF is wrong with these people..........seriously!!!!!
here is what you do.....CHARGE ENTRANCE FEE.......hell, even $1.00 and you would keep half the sh*t heads out!!!!!!

When we were younger we would go every year. I haven't gone for a few years until this year.
It's just never really appealed too me. It's expensive and crowded.
Food is ok, but nothing stands out!
DON'T USE YOUR CREDIT CARD HERE
My friend from out of town had $20,000 in fraudulent charges made the day after she used her card here. (And she used that card only at the Taste the entire weekend she was visiting.) Unless you like buying flowers, sex toys, and video games for strangers, cash only.
I love the event, but identity theft makes for a pretty bad after taste.

The Taste of Chicago is deceiving. What I mean by that is that the Taste doesn't fully/accurately represent Chicago cuisine. Anyone who is from here probably knows that Lou Malnati's is not the best deep dish pizza to represent Chicago styla 'za, Buona Beef is not the place to get the best Italian Beef in the city, and Harold's not the best fried chicken. Hell, one of the best and finest Italian restaurants in Chicago, Tuscany on Taylor, sells items that are not on their menu!
Deep Dish Pizza: anyone heard of Uno's, Due's, Gino's?
Italian Beef: Al's? Chickie's? Quick Bite (Western/Foster)?
Fried Chicken: Edna's? Stanley's?
You won't find the above at the Taste.
Granted, there are several gems at the Taste:
1) Ricobene's. Breaded-steak sandwich with red sauce and giardanara peppers. Crispy breaded steak on French bread. NIce!
2) BJ's Market: Mustard-Fried Catfish! Catfish breaded in corn meal and mustard flavorings. Crispy and like no other breading you've ever had on fish. A must-try!
3) Vee-Vee's African Restaurant: Jerk Chicken w/red beans and rice. Chicken (dark meat) on the bone cooked over an open fire with, yes, RB&R. It's quite a good smokey flavor, but not spicy like Jerk should be. I recommend the chili garlic sauce that they offer at the booth.
And now for the winner:
4) Lagniappe-Creole Cajun Joynt, 1525 W. 79th St. Oh, your catfish po' boy is as close to Verti Marte as you can get in the Midwest! Your catfish perfectly breaded and crispy yet keeping the fish moist! Your spicy remolaude sauce adding that slight tang of horseradish to the sandwich makes every bite worth every ticket! It's well worth the 8 or 9 tickets. 10 stars for Lagniappe! I WILL vist you soon!
To people who think the Taste is a ripoff. Each ticket costs $.50. You spend 8 tickets on a sandwich. That's $4. You spend more than that at Subway or Jimmy Johns or for the taste-bud impaired, Quizno's. So why the complaints? A taste portion costs you $1.50. If you buy tickets at Dominicks pre-Taste dates, 12 tickets is $6. If you buy them at the Taste, you give the city government $2 surcharge (hence, the $8 price for 12 tix. You know Daley's gonna get his tax!).

If you're looking for great Chicago cuisine (definitely not the healthiest), it's fun to check out. Go EARLY before the crowds hits and popular bands perform. A few favorite items are:
Garlic Shrimp-Father & Sons
Polish food-Kasia's Deli
Rainbow Ice-Original Rainbow Cone
Watermelon Slice-Dominicks Grocer
Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura- Guey Lon
Empanadas-Las Tablas Colombian
Homemade Potato Chip-Harry Caray's
ENJOY!!
Whiners, the whole lot of ya! I hope you complain as loud about Bears games and Lollapalooza.
I went after work on a Wednesday and didn't wait in line for anything, not tickets, not food, not beer. I went back on Sunday afternoon and it wasn't much different.
I spent $48 for dinner for 2 and most of that money was on beer (48 of 72 tickets), and I went home with tickets, so you have to really gorge yourself to not get your money's worth. With my remaining tickets I tried...
-Mustard Fried Catfish
-BBQ Buffalo Burger
-Skewered Shark Veracruz
-Italian Breaded Steak Sandwich
-Rib Tips
-Steamed Pork Bao
-Taiwan Shining Noodles
All of it was good, fresh food. This fest is what you make of it, plus a little planning. Go during off times, don't drink, and have a tolerance for crowds, as you will be going to a pretty crowded place. I'm a fan and look forward to it every year.

Full disclosure: I've only been once, as a visitor years ago. But please don't make me go back. Last 4th of July, the closest I made it without actually touching the Taste was the Gage. And even that was a bit stressful being only a stone's throw from the action. To be fair, I'm just not a fan of crowds... overpriced food... porto-potties... or getting mown down by stroller-wielding tourists in broad daylight... but then again, that's just me.

Now, now Yelpers...don't work yourselves into a tizzy over the out-of-towners. They're from the suburbs, not Sodom and Gomorrah. They're regular people just like you and me. Oh sure, maybe their tank tops are a little on the small side, and maybe there's a mullet or two walking around. So what? You're so much better, you're so cultured? Maybe. But that's why you go to the opera, museums, the symphony, or whatever place you're constantly name dropping. You go the the Taste for great people watching, for top (free) musical acts, and for: Lou Malnati's pizza, Ricobene's breaded steak sandwich, Original Rainbow cones, crawfish boil from Lagniappe, and collard green egg rolls from C'est Si Bon. As a matter of fact, those are all food items I had today, all for under $20. Buy your tickets in advance for a generous discount at Dominick's. Or don't. Whatever.
It's not my favorite Chicago festival, and sometimes it's just too hot and sticky to have a great time. But overall, there's a ton of food, music, dancing, and just regular people having fun. It's worth checking out at least once.

The week plus long event features some of the best restaurants in Chicago. Many of the offerings include the infamous deep dish pizza, bbq ribs, Vietnamese dumplings and every dessert you could possibly be craving for. They have two sizes for most, an actual serving you'd get at the restaurant and a tasting portion.
It does get crowded but did you expect? There was a point where I felt like I was back in SF when saw a guy in a speedo drinking a beer and practically inhaling a whole rack of ribs before my very eyes.
The taste sports pavilion is a must go to for every sports lover (raffles, memorabilia and sports clinics). The kids can have fun at the family village where they can jump in the bouncy house, play with legos and take pictures in the pix booth.
When you buy tickets buy in bulk because the lines are a pain! Wear comfy shoes and take public transportation (trust me). Another plus is you burn off what you ate as you shuffle your way through the crowds.

The Taste of Chicago in a few words...(the only review you'll need to read)
- Crowded
- Food
- Crowded
- Strollers hitting the back of your legs
- More food
- Free stuff
- Crowded
- Hot
- More food
- More strollers
- Dirty looks
- More food
Yep I think that sums it up!

Taste of Chicago was a blast. I had the opporutnity to partake in this festival of gluttony when taking some time off for the 4th of July Week for a buddy's batchelor party.
To the Chicagans reading this post, we have something like this similar in San Diego where I reside. It's referred to as Taste of Little Italy. Similar but smaller scale. However we do have restaurant week where you actually place reservations and dine inside the restaurant. They're normally 3 course meals averaging about $30-40.00 .
Ok for the San Diego Peeps... conversely think of Taste of Little Itally but on a grander scale. The best foods from all over Chi-town are here. You basically purchase tickets at booths strategically placed around Griffith Park. Some of the stuff was to die for... BBQ pork, Italian Beef Sandwiches with Au Jus Sauce, Turkey Leg, Cream Cheese on a stick, Pizza Pizza and more Pizza, Elote / Corn, just to a name a few. There's nothing too fancy schmancy. Think Del Mar Fair w/more options than your usual fried stuff. There were several beer gardens to keep me satisfied and music as well. This festival is a yearly event and one of the best that Chi-Town has to offer. I recommened hitting this festival up if you have the chance.

I had to give the Taste one star for two reasons: (i) Yelp requires one star, there is STILL no zero-star rating, and (ii) I did not get shot on my way out of Grant Park, and that deserves a star, right??
Okay, maybe that was in poor taste, but so was the Taste.
Chicago, you are a world class City. Pretend like you know what you're doing when setting up these massive events. Don't set up the food ticket counters in such a way that lines of ticket buyers block the hungry - and surly - throngs of hungry tourists and pickpockets.
I couldn't stand the fact that it took me 20 minutes to go a half block, So I only hit up Soul Veg and the African places next door. Both were mediocre.
From my perspective, the taste was a pavilion of amateur lameness.
Boooo!

I'd give this 0 stars, but you have to give at least 1. I'm going to use a free association and just type what comes to mind when it comes to the Taste of Chicago: Disappointing, crowded, overpriced, marginal food, small servings & being elbow to elbow with a bunch of fatties stuffing food down their throat as if it's a contest to eat the fastest.
I couldn't get over the overweight people just gnawing on those large turkey legs as they walked around in the scorching sun, bumping into people as their focus was soley on wolfing down turkey and not watching where they were going. My appetite waned the more I became embarressed to be a human.
I vote for renaming this festival "Fat people with no manners, stuffing overpriced food in their face"-fest. It's a little more accurate than Taste of Chicago.

Had a great time today at the taste. It was raining so my friend and I got soaked getting there, that made it the more interesting! It was a bit crowded but thats what the taste is, you can't have the taste without a crowd. I got Robinson's baby back ribs, which was a bit disappointing, we also got Helen's BBQ Turkey leg which was AWESOME, we then got Harry Carry's homemade potato chips w/ hot sauce and was just DELISH! and finished it off w/ roasted corn. Weather was cool and perfect, the crowd was really nice. I really enjoyed it! The taste is one if Chicago's staples where we can enjoy the city's finest!

I would rather pass a kidney stone than return to the taste of Chicago. Seriously, you will spend an outrageous amount of money for food that has half spoiled while getting molested by the crowds of fat suburbanites in too-small tank tops. Even the restaurants that are good are shitty at the Taste, and definitely over-priced. To be fair, I only went once, but I ended up throwing half of what I bought away, which meant wasting tons of money, there is no where to sit, it's hot, it's sticky. There was no redeeming value.

OK so I know how natives to Chicago feel about the Taste but I moved here last November and had never been. My sister was visiting for 4th of July weekend and we decided we wanted to go to the taste because we love food and eating.
We got $30 worth of tickets at Dominicks and showed up at 11:00 on 7/3. It was not too crowded and we were able to make our way around pretty quickly. We mostly got tasting portions and shared them between the two of us. Although we attempted to try new foods, rather than foods we were already familiar with, but there was less of a variety than expected. We were finished in about an hour. 60 tickets was too much and by the end we were forcing ourselves to use them up. We ended up giving the rest away on the way out.
I had mixed feelings about going because of bad reviews and I am not a fan a big crowds (people in general tend to annoy me) but I am glad I went, and glad my sister got to experience it too. However, I do not think that I will go back again unless I have visitors in town.
Also- They do not have bloody marys at the taste of Chicago so don't waste your time (like we did) wandering around looking for a good last morning alcoholic drink.
I dread going to this after my experience last year (99 degrees and 100% humidity=barf). But it wasn't so bad. We went on the 4th, from about 1130-230ish. It was starting to get really crowded when we were leaving, but not bad while we were there. Thank god for cooler weather this year.
In response to others' reviews: why do you keep going every year if you hate it so much? I avoided it the first 3 years I lived here, easily.
I know what to expect, so I go for the foods I know that I love (pierogies from Kasia's, cheesecake on a stick from Eli's, homemade chips from Harry Caray's), even if they are the same every year.
It never changes....tons of people, same cuisine. Lots of places to choose from though it seems no place rotates their menus from prior years. There are touns of tourists that insist on bringing their kids and their kid's kids, etc. Good for groups of 2 or 4 that can walk and talk by themselves but it's still overrated.
I spent $200 here last year and the best thing I had were some cold grapes from the grocery store stand. I felt like and idiot. Like a sweaty, funky, broke idiot getting hit in the ankles by strollers over and over again.
The Taste is a perfect opportunity to try out new (and new to me) great air-conditioned spots all over the city with all of the riff-raff out of my way.

Ugh! Ugh! Ugh! I used to love coming to the Taste of Chicago. If you ask me why, I could not give you a very good answer. Most likely I would shake my head, and respond in a mumbled tone of voice, "What the hell was I thinking?"
If I do go to the Taste nowadays, you will find me up here on a Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday before 3:00 on the afternoon. I would rather have my molars pulled out with a pair of pliers than go here on the weekend or on the night of July 3rd.
It does have it's redeeming qualities though. You can sample some different food from restaurants that you haven't tried and it also makes for some interesting people watching too. Plus if you are going to gorge yourself with overpriced food it is best that that you do so where you are forced to get off your dead ass and walk around afterward.

It was an interesting experience. The cost was expected (high) but it was very busy and cramped and the food wasn't anything special. Too many people trying to eat so the vendors can't really cook up anything special. It was definitely something to try out at least once if you are visiting Chicago but otherwise don't worry about it.
I like the Taste of Chicago festival, I have gone several years in the past. But this year was unacceptable. With the gang-war that was going, shootings, fist fights, tear gassing, and stampedes it was a bit hard to enjoy cajun meatballs , lobster tail with garlic potatoes, pad thai with spicy peanut sauce, dumplings with bbq pork plus teriyaki chicken, watermelon Italian ice, and beer-all sorts of drinks sold beers 7 tickets, tickets are 12 for $8. If they could keep the hoodrats out I would definitely be there more often during the time the Taste of operating but not worth being maimed.
I went once for 15 minutes. Will never set foot again.
I'd rather go eat at a decent restaurant where I can sit down and also not get food poisoning.
I didn't get a chance to go to the Taste last year because I was out of town, so I was excited to finally get to do it this year. Everyone kept telling me that it was overpriced, overrated, and generally just not that great of an experience, but I went anyway. I knew they'd probably be right, but in any case, this was something that I wanted to do just to see what it was like for myself, and I figured that if nothing else, I'd at least get some good food out of it.
The Taste of Chicago is good in theory: you get to try a lot of different foods in a short period of time and without having to trek all across the city to do it. BUT... don't come here if you're looking for cheap food or if you don't like getting up close and personal with a bunch of sweaty strangers.
Walking through the crowds is a feat in itself. When you go, expect to have to sidestep your way through the entire festival area, because it's practically impossible to walk directly from one end to the other. There are just so many people there who just stand in place without realizing that there's an entire mass of people behind them trying to get through, so defensive walking skills and a great deal of patience are both essential tools for surviving the Taste.
And regarding the cost, you have to buy tickets in a strip of 12, which will set you back $8. I bought 24 tickets, which seemed like enough for me. That was able to get me a barbecue chicken sandwich, a funnel cake, and a soda. My $16 could have gotten me a lot more food at other places, but at the Taste, you're paying more for the experience than you are for the food itself. Overall, I would have to put it into the same category as spending New Year's Eve in Times Square: you do it once just to say that you did it, rather than going back year after year. In my opinion, it's just not worth it to come back to this more than once.
Still a great time. If you have not been be warned, It's crowded. Hectic and half the people are drunk and ugly. But hey great food and lots of beer. Don't even think of driving. Take advantage of public transportation.
How can you not love the Taste. Fabulous food, insane heat and the only place to sit is on your rump if you forget your folding chair.
I absolutely love the food, the music is alright but I miss the taste.
I haven't been since 04
I don't know why I keep going every year...but there's something to Taste that makes me come back, even when I dread having to maneuver around sweaty smelly people. Here is my list of the things I tried (may have forgotten a couple):
Polo Café & Catering: Shark Veracruz - Absolutely Horrible!! This is where my curious nature screws me over. I wanted to try shark...I had a feeling it would taste like crap...yet I still got it. Sigh. I remember scowling at the sign with the Chicago Tribune editor that said "Go get yourself a meaty piece of shark!" How about not.
Las Tablas: Empanada - So. Not. Tasty. It came with a sauce but the sauce was quite flavorless as well.
Lou Malnati's: Sausage Pizza - Can't go wrong with Lou's in my book!
Tutto Italiano: Toasted Ravioli and Berry Sorbet - Ravioli and sorbet were both good!
Vee-Vee's African Cuisine: Goat and Plantains - Tasty but the goat seemed a little too overcooked.
La Justicia: Steak Tacos - Mmmm..love tacos.
Polka Sausage & Deli: Polish Sausage Sandwich, Pierogies - Pierogies were just okay, polish was good and great bang for your buck as they gave you a huge portion.
Chicago Chocolate Company: Chocolate-dipped strawberries - fresh dipped chocolate strawberries...can't go wrong.

I had successfully avoided the Taste for all my 23 years until last summer. The only reason that I broke down was that a friend's band was performing on the "Fox stage" last year.
I have to say that overall I had a decent time....I surmassed it was likely that my experience was improved by the VIP access complete with fans and free booze.....HOWEVER my original reasons for not going to the taste did hamper my time there. It was hot, crowded and overpriced. I'd much rather visit the actual establishment and get much better quality food and service for the same price than to visit that restaurant's booth at the Taste.
I just feel like the Taste is more for visitors to the city than people who actually live here. Why would anyone pay money to get a piece of Eli's cheesecake when I can get that at Jewel for cheaper!!
If you like standing in dense crowds, while fat down-staters sweat on you, occasionally staining your clothes with bbq sauce from their giant turkey legs, then this is the place for you.
In all honesty this is something to try maybe once a decade. There are a lot of food options, but you end up spending a lot of money and man wasn't meant to eat Puerto Rican, Indian, Mexican, Cajun and Pizza all in one serving. For the money you end up spending you can go to a great place, get table service, and actually be able to enjoy the company of your friends.
Umm.. this is the quinnessential midwest activity - lets stand around and eat and eat and eat some more. i mostly saw obese people walking around eating funnel cake. you get a "deal" of 12 tickets for $8, but it's about 9 tickets to get any sort of meal, so you can either get the "skinny" taste portions, or be bamboozled into buying more tickets. there's also no eating areas, so you literally can only stand up and eat. eating is not an activity, people!!!!

I've lived here for 2 years and haven't been. Yesterday, my boss gave me the day off for my birthday. I was originally planning to go on the 4th, which now i hear is hell! We went - grabbed our tickets with no line and every single booth we went to had no line. The place was busy but there were so many people working each booth that you hardly noticed since you didn't have to wait in line! The Brawny wash stations (which actually had people working at them?!) were a god-send!! I was disappointed in some of the selections...8 tickets for some grapes Dominicks? Really? Do you know how much I can get those in your store?! And Lou Malnati's - I've been told their pizza is good and was looking forward to trying it (but picky me just wanted a 'taste') and their taste was garden salad? Huh!? You're a pizza joint!! Serve pizza! All that aside I tried my first peirogi (?) which was fantastic and a rainbow cone which I had seen on he Food Network once and LOVED it!! So touristy - but hey, I haven't been here too long yet so I can still be a tourist!!
I have been going almost every year since I have been able to remeber.
I don't know why I keep going. and I think this year will probabaly be my last.
I'll admit, there were years when I just went for a concert and skipped the food. We were forced to skip the food due to the jam-packed crowds.
Last year we went early in the day. I was one of those lucky people who got salmonella (I got sick off the sloppy joe place; my fault for eating thier luke-warm products in summer heat.)
This year I went after work with a buddy who had extra tickets he wanted to use from a previous visit. It was a beautiful day, wasn't very crowded, so why not, right?
As usual, prices are ridiculous. I wasn't in the mood for spending half a day's pay on three regular items. I got three tasters: Rainbo Cone (that was a joke), Italian fries (all five of them tasted great...cold) and Thai peanut noodles (best value for a taster, although I swear they put in saurkraut as filling.)
Would it be possible if they had variety like they used ot in the past? How many chain rib and pizza joints do we need in one festival?
I also found it excessive to have a Harold's Chicken Shack booth when there is an outlet on Wabash and Balbo several thousand yards away from the fest. Actually, almost everything at the fest was a chain.
Will never go again!!! Very crowded, and the food was horrible!!
i can't help it, taste of chicago is a tradition i celebrate every year, just like holidays with the aunt i have to visit even though she serves me the casserole i have to swallow without chewing. only taste is better, cause i can usually find something new to rock my socks to make up for the unfortunate choices that are relegated to the trash cans after a "taste"; this year it was the horrendous rice pudding/wallpaper paste served up by the grill.
the thing is, a lot of the minuses can be avoided by a little planning on your part. first, go at 11, when it opens, before the workers throng out of their high rise bldgs for lunch hour, or the touristas converge. it's an easy stroll rather than a roller derby nudge and thrash routine. and for the love of sanity, don't venture in on the 3rd. it's a cattle call to be avoided at all costs.
next, why spend your cash on pizza and burgers that you can have on any given night of take out? concentrate on the unusual fare, or visit places that you've had curiosity about. i focus on the chef's table, which in previous years was referred to as the gourmet tent. it features one restaurant per day, and i've never been disappointed. in fact, that's pretty much been my main draw for the last few years, though the hub always indulges in a rainbow cone, and i almost always go for the taste portion of mustard catfish from bj's, as well as their peach cobbler.
and if you've really spent $200 for unsatisfying fare, come here, little diner, i have a bridge to sell you.
Ugh, just thinking about trying to navigate the Taste gets me tired. It is a fight to the death most of the time.
Two things that ruin it for me: Strollers and flimsy plates. The strollers are nothing more than fancy battering rams and boy do people know how to use them. The plates, combined with clumsy people using them, are a recipe for disaster. One year I think I left there WEARING more food than I ate. When I say bring Handi-Wipes I am not kidding. Trust.
That being said, I have had some delightful things to eat there - rice pudding with mango and cranberries, mustard battered catfish, collard green eggrolls, African and Cuban food - if you know what to get ahead of time you can score big. Buy tickets in advance from Dominicks, you will save $1.50 per sheet of 11.
Slight rant here: I have no respect for those folks that go to the Taste and order pizza, ribs and italian beef. If you are a tourist from Albuquerque - go nuts, but come on folks, if you are a Chicago resident you should be ashamed. Its not like you cant get that stuff on practically every street corner the entire year long. And for less money. And you dont have to sit in the grass to eat it.
