ok place for lunch, but don't expect top notch Japanese food.

I have been here 5 times that I can remember.  My general impression is that the food is adequate, but not overly inspiring.  This time I had the Bento special with gyozo, Chicken Katsu, and Tempura.  All were fairly well made and had decent flavor.  The chicken katsu was well cooked (not overdone like last time).

The person I was with got the bento with california roll, salmon sushi, and chicken teriyaki,  Similar impressions on his part, though he did feel that salmon was pretty fresh.  He also got an additional order of Unagi which was good.

Miso soup here is not so great.  I think it is some standard packaged mix.

Service is fairly quick - order at register and pick up food at the window when ready.  last time I was there it was fairly crowded and there was some minor confusion over whose order was ready.

The little mini strip mall has 5 places to eat.  so it's a good place to meet up for lunch since there is probably something that will suit everyone's tastes.  parking can be tough on a busy day, but was no problem today.

I came here for lunch this afternoon - I was ready for a nice Japanese lunch but what I got was completely different than what I expected.  First off - this place is cheap, it's not expensive to eat at.  I'm not holding anything against it for that.  However, when you advertise your establishment as a Japanese restaurant, then you better serve something that can pass for Japanese food.

I had the basic chicken teriyaki bento, and it made me lose the appetite that I had built up all morning.  The miso soup was lukewarm and watered down, the teriyaki sauce didn't taste like teriyaki sauce (nor did it look like it - it looked more like black gel than anything), the chicken was burnt and not moist at all (this caused me to chew it like beef jerky), but the salad was good (although there wasn't enough of it).

I won't be eating here again, which is a shame because all of the other restaurants in this strip mall are very good.  If the food was this bad at lunch here, I don't expect the dinner to be any better.

This is one of my favorite places to go to lunch, since it's close to work, and I'm a sucker for Japanese food. They have daily deals M-F. The ones I remember is the bbq chicken bulgogi, sushi roll, and dragon roll specials. The biggest reason why this place does not get high marks is the price. I believe on average be expected to pay $10+ for any lunch.

They have two lunch special bentos, Combo A and B. The difference is that one has gyozas, and the other has california rolls. I usually get the Combos with chicken katsu and salmon sushi. Their salmon is very sweet and melts in your mouth. Chicken katsu is very crispy and well fried and the right thickness.

The owners there are very nice, and they are Korean, so if you're looking out for those Korean owned Japanese places, this is one of them. They also have many different types of korean dishes here as well.

Let me share you a simple story about what to watch out for here. Once I was ordering I was asked if I wanted extra rice. And I was like, oh wow this lady is so nice and likes me(I come at really late hours so she knows me). So I said sure. Well apparently I get the bill and I was charged a dollar extra for rice. At this time I'm looking at my bill, then back at her with her beaming smile, and then back at my bill of failure. I didn't have the heart to take it back. I made sure that day I ate the rice with as much vigor as possible. The moral of this story? Don't be a pussy like me. :(

So basically great food, but very pricey. Very little seating, so be sure to come during early or late hours to avoid traffic during lunch.

COOL FACT: The VTA Light rail stops right in front of this place!
UNCOOL FACT: The VTA light rail takes forever to get here! The tasman/1st  transfer sucks...

    TASMAN TERRIYAKI
This is a fast food Japanese restaurant that is close b to work; great for quick eats, but not too excellent on taste. I ordered the Chicken Terriyaki Bowl, which was quite large, but the sauce tasted weird: wasn't very tasty and it was very thick. Can't say it tasted bad, but it didn't taste great either. I'll probably try more dishes next time, like their bento boxes and ramen, but the terriyaki sauce wasn't all that. It's fast food, right?

This is the worst place for Bento box lunch.  My co workers and I decided we wanted something close and fast, Worst mistake EVER.  This place is not good.  The food took long. The teriyaki was cold, the miso soup was cold, the rice looked old and tasted cold.  But, the worst part was when my co worked found a HAIR mixed with the salad.  GROSS, GROSS.  Not only was the service slow and bad, but the food was AWFUL!!!  We left and got our money back.

Last time I return to this place.

Was heading to Tivo for Mogo, got there saw the line that wrapped around the parking lot.  Decided to try something else.  Drove by Tasman and saw the strip mall of Carls Jr.  Walked around to see what else.

Well Tasman Teriyaki wasn't too busy but had folks looking like they were enjoying what they ate.  Looked at the menu.  Cool prices are good all around $7.50.

-1 point for bait and switch on price. Walked in and looked at the prices on the wall, hey the prices are all more expensive.  Well I guess pay a dollar more won't hurt.

I even asked the lady about the price and she said oh the menu is old.  Isn't there some law about price misrepresentation?

Ordered the spicy pork bulgogi (sp?), salad, rice meal.
    Ok Salad was ok.

"Spicy pork bulgogi" not only was it not spicy, it was way tough. -2

Rice was really old.   I had to really chew hard to get that down.

The little roach I saw walking on the wall next to me another -1.

So all in all, 1 star.  I don't give many places 1 star but this one deserves a .5 or less.

My coworker also had something similar, cept his short ribs was actually ok.  But the his coke was flat,  no carbonation.

    Definitely not coming back.

This place is really close to where i live, so it's really convenient for me to just call or walk in, and get a pick up order whenever i want something cheap and decent for dinner.

Came here on a Friday night, and it was dead. However, i did want to eat rice pretty bad, so i decided to give it a try. The menu is quite limited to mostly Teriyaki as their name implies, but they do have other items too; such as gyoza, a variety of Donburi, Udon, some house specials and a little of the typical sushi/sashimi/nigiri.

Being the sushi monster freak that i am, i didn't bulge to even look for sushi. I never do, if the place isn't really a sushi place. And even though the name of the place states Teriyaki, i didn't bother with that either. I always feel that i can make Teriyaki at home easily...so i picked the Spicy Chicken house special.

The entree came with rice, soup and salad (which i substituted with kimchi). The portion was good in reference to the price. I got excited because the chicken looked really spicy; which what i was hoping for. But despite the spiced up, red sauce; i couldn't quite taste the flavor, and didn't even feel a hint of spice. So it was really disappointing. The chicken came with pieces of veggies. The kimchi, is a little bland but it was okay. The soup was also very watery and flavorless.
But the RICE. yeah. perfectly cooked white rice. It was probably the reason I still managed to eat my completely unflavored spicy chicken still.

I won't hate on this place just yet....since it's really convenient for me when I'm foodless. But maybe next time, i'll stick with the teriyaki or try the gyoza.

Oh. the service is pretty fast. And i do appreciate that the server actually hand delivered my order to my car as i decided to smoke while waiting for my order.

This is an ok choice for a stop and go at lunch.  A decent selection of Japanese food with some Korean influences.   Nothing here would make you remember the food and crave it, but nothing is bad either.

Overall a solid choice for a quick Japanese meal.

I enjoy Tasman Teriyaki when on a time-constraint for lunch. I am quite close to their location. I have always had luck with good tasting food, large portions, and a very good price.

Unfortunately, for a take-out dinner, we had extremely bad luck one time, for both of our meals, in that the meat was very fatty and way overcooked. The chicked was rubbery and the tempura was cold and overly saturated in oil. The rice felt like it was sitting out for a while. It was a disaster. Since then, we did not go back until recently. I stopped by again for lunch, and it was just as good as I remembered it.

I'm giving the place another chance, as I think it was a fluke that we had such a bad meal that one time for take-out dinner. However, my wife is insistent that we do not order it again for dinner- she' will only order it for lunch.

My hubby and I come here about once a week for a late lunch. The owners are very sweet, especially because we come w/ our little baby, who they are very friendly towards.

I always get the chicken katsu plate, which is a great deal because it comes with rice, salad, and miso soup for less than 7 bucks.

It's a great alternative to burgers and fries.

I needed some food on the go and fast a burrito sounds yummy...... But, I forgot that Senor Jalapeno was no longer here.  Damn.  Then I saw the Greek place..... nawww not today.... now with only  20 minutes until my meeting I had to pick quick.  I worked at the Togo's here on Tasman as a teenager and really couldn't make myself enter the doors.  So it was down to the Indian place and the Japanese restaurant.  Have you seen my other reviews... come on now!

So I read the menu on the door.  It's a little after 5 and the place is deserted.  If you're new to the area you would think that this is strange, but at 5 the carpoolers and Cisco workers have left the area.  When I walked in the table to my right had 2 Hispanic ladies and a baby sitting down.  I stepped up to the register and hear the chairs move behind me.  One of the ladies walks back to the kitchen and another one to the register.  Whoa - is this a Japanese restaurant?  Where is the sushi chef?   Oh well time is limited and I must eat.

I wish that I would have looked at the menu better because I realized after I ordered they had some Korean dishes..  I see reviews about some Korean couple owning this place, but it looks like some Hispanic women and a 2year old girl were running things last night.  She was nice and helpful.  For fast Japanese food this place wasn't bad.  I want to try it on Friday for the Sashimi combo.  It sounds yum-o.

**UPDATE:**04/15/08 - I ate here last Thursday after work again, getting ready to do another meeting.  This time i had my sister meet me.(I wanted her to buy me dinner)  So i get there a little earlier than last time, took my time to order, a Sapporo.  Waited until my party arrived then took them the menu.  Seriously regretting not trying some Korean fare last time I just had to try the Gal Bee (Kalbi).  They don't give you much but then again your not paying much.  It was a little sweeter than I liked, however everything else but the miso soup that day was yummy.  The kimchi was a little less spicy then normal however I think that they are doing that for the general public.

I bumped it up a star , because my sisters boyfriend had the spicy chicken and it was sooooo good.  I am fo sho' gettin that next time,  My sister got the bento #1 as i did last time and once again the tempura was crispy and yummy.

The man behind the counter must be one of those owners your talking about.  He was super kind and even served the food to us.

There's nothing good about this place. The food quality is bad. They gave us burnt chicken teriyaki. The Salmon was as thin as paper, and dry. The letttus was old and soft. The miso soup was bland and watered down. It's not really a restaurant. You order at the cashier and you pour your own drink from the drink fountain, you pick up your own food and you're expected to clean up after yourself. The price is expensive for what you get. The owner doesn't want to run the A/C so it gets steaming hot in there.

The only reason I went there was because of the yelp review was OK. Now I  know better.

This is the Japanese-place-near-the-office, located in what we refer to as the "multi-ethnic food court" on Tasman -- there's a Japanese place, a Greek place, an Indian place, a Chinese place, a Mexican place, a Togo's, and a Carl's.  All are passable, none are excellent.  But that's what you've come to expect for lunch joints near the office, right?

Tasman Teriyaki does the standard lunch bento box thing, and their food is acceptable.  I usually get a Bento #2 which comes with a choice of 2 "entree" items (they have the usual teriyaki beef, chicken, and salmon, pork & chicken katsu, chicken yakitori, or tempura), plus deep-fried gyoza, rice, salad and soup.  It costs about $9 after tax.

The wait for takeout orders here can be very long.  If you walk past the restaurant and there's a line at the register more than 3 people long, don't bother -- you'll be there at least 25 minutes.  With no line, a 10-15 minute wait is more likely.

I would rank Sendo Sushi (Tasman & First) a shade higher than Tasman Teriyaki, but Tasman Teriyaki is closer to the office, so we probably end up there slightly more often.

ETA: I've discovered their bulgoki beef is actually relatively decent, so that and an order of CA rolls is my new favorite Tasman Teriyaki lunch.  Keep your expectations in line for a strip mall Asian restaurant and you might even be pleasantly surprised!

Errr not great.  The meat was cooked well (I got the kalbi), but it was fatty and the marinade sucked (no flavor, no sweetness, no nothing).

And my stomach gurgled all afternoon.  Might have been because I was super hungry before I ate, but it might have been the food.  I'm just saying.

Oh, and the prices posted outside are incorrect.  It's more expensive by nearly $2.  I don't like it when restaurants do that.

When the office crew decided our lunch practices were becoming a tad insular, it was time to diversify and find something new. I recollected that there used to be a Senor Jalapenos off of Tasman near Lick Mill, so I took them hostage and we headed over there.

The Senor Jalapenos is gone (and replaced by a 'Muuuuy Bueno!'), but the rest of the place (Togos, Indian food, greek, chinese, etc) all looked like it did seven years ago. Except for the new place - which turned out to be Tasman Teriyaki. I walked in, and was immediately interested.

For one thing, the place was crowded and it was lunch time. Always a good sign. For another, the menu selection seemed like a good mix of Korean and Japanese food at very decent prices. The staff were friendly, and you make a line and order at the cash register. The kitchen has a window for take-out orders with a bench for patrons, and tables for sit-down customers. I saw quite a few bento boxes on the menu, but I had to have the Kalbi. A co-worker got the Bulgogi. The wait wasn't nearly as long as I was hoping it would be - since there was a very attractive woman seated to our left who had decided to forgo her bra and improve the dining experience of the other male patrons. (It is Silicon Valley, so pretty much everyone else).

The food was excellent, and we resolved to return. No, not just because of the girl - we really did like the food. But I wouldn't be averse to seeing her again either. Neither would anyone else there that day.

$8.61 for a Monday special Bulgoki Bowl....  beef was dry and a little burnt.  Too much vegetable compared to beef.  The whole bowl tasted plain and not not worth it for $8+.  Also price posted from outside is cheaper than actual price.

So this is just an OK place for what it is and where it is located. I decided my first taste would be a non-sushi/sashimi lunch. So I had their Bento combo #2 with 3 gyoza, a small salad, miso, and rice with both the pork and chicken Katsu. Good chicken and nicely done. The pork Katsu was just OK, tasting not bad but not great, especially under the Worcestershire-based sauce they put on it.

Note: Prices in front 4 years old and are not what you see inside the place, which I mentioned to the owner.

Oh and the bento tray was sticky to the touch. Not a great impression. With other places like Honba Sushi, this is not a necessary place to go to for sushi/Japanese.

All good things must come to an end. One of my favorite places to eat in Santa Clara has disappointed me and prompted me to find alternate places to eat. Whatever happened to the original owner who made sure his customers were well taken care of. Now they have an owner straight out of Mike Tyson's Punch Out who resembles Piston Honda. I used to get extra rice on the house, but now he charges an extra dollar. The #2 has really hit rock bottom. The beef now tastes as if it was reheated in a microwave and the chicken yakitori should now be called "chicken yuckitori." The chicken was tough and dry. The gyoza and rice were the only tolerable items that night. I don't think I'll be back.

Fast food bento box lunches are decent for less than $10.  I went there for lunch today.  Haven't been there for some times.  The cashier lady changed, so I'm thinking the place probably changed owner (???)

Items on the menu remain the same, and price maybe same also (couldn't tell).  Portion of food I noticed a little different.  The portion of the rice was less (smaller football shape) and portion of my usual salmon teriyaki was reduced also.  I found bruised lettuce in my salad, and only two pieces of tofu in my miso soup... ok, the gyoza was consistent, hehe...  hmmm, I don't know what else to say.  It was just ok for me today.

Great place for lunch. Of course more expensive than MacDonalds, but much healthier too, agree? So the price is right (lunch menu).

Note to owners: I'm the one that got a free piece of pancake (that was not on the menu) from you, when I was picking up my to-go order.

I saw it lonely laying on the dish next to my order and looking at me :) Couldn't help myself and asked the owner "what is it"?
    That's how I got it :)

GREAT dish! You should definitely include it on the menu and do some mini-promo with a picture. I love it, others will follow.

Especially it would be a great addition to vegetarian menu.

This place is decent. Its pretty inexpensive for Japanese food. It's owned by a Korean couple, so they have a few Korean dishes on the menu. The seating is very limited, mostly the tables seat only two people. The wall next to my table had a wooden sign with a bible quote inscribed in Korean.

I had the Chicken Donburi the first time I went there, its 7$. the second time I got food to go, my Korean co-worker ordered for me, so we got a discount. That time I got the chicken teriyaki. I have no complaints. The Green Tea ice cream is $1.50 a scoop.

I come here every so often if a friend from the area wants to grab something to eat for lunch or dinner, and we're too lazy to think of anywhere else to go.

I've only ever ordered the bento boxes, which let you combo items from a set that includes various teriyakis, tempura, California rolls, and katsu (and other items which I forget).

You pay ahead with your order.  If they are busy, you pick up the order at a window, otherwise, they'll bring it out.  I remember the food being decent, and the prices pretty cheap, but I don't ever feel particularly compelled to go here.  I don't know why...I keep coming back actually.  Actually, I know why...I get too lazy to drive all the way to Ranch 99.

I work on Tasman, and there are only a hand full of Asian restaurants within a 20 minute radius.
So once in a while, when I'm craving some sort of rice dish, I would have to come here.
The food is pretty expensive for that it is. The portions are pretty small. Don't ever get the sushi combo plate because they give you like 8 small pieces of sushi and charge you $15 for it.
Their chicken bowl is the only good thing about the place. It is inexpensive and well made.
With To-gos and $5 gyros right next doors, I really don't recommend this place for lunch to anyone. Unless you are craving some Japanese food.

I eat lunch here at least once per week, and I always come back to the office happy.  The only negative thing I can say about Tasman Teriyaki is that it can take quite awhile for your food to emerge from the kitchen when they are busy.

Aside from that, their bento boxes are a great bargain for the money, and the special Sashimi bento they offer on Friday is something to look forward to.

Don't come here expecting the finest sushi in town, but for a quick lunch on the cheap you can't beat it.

I was craving a chicken bowl today and yelped Tasman Teriyaki.  I had actually eaten here a few times in the past and simply didn't remember that it was so close to my office.

I got a chicken bowl for around 5 bucks.  So it's a great value; sure beats the same old foot long sub.  Although the bowl was good, it wasn't great.  The chicken was all very lean and all the extra fat was cut off fairly well.  The sauce was a bit different from other places but in all, I was satisfied.  I expected a chicken bowl to come with some veggies too, but not here.

Its not mind blowing but I'll be eating here again soon.

This place is okaaay. If you're really craving Japanese food, sure this place is okay. The food honestly is not all that tasty and it's a bit overpriced. It can get pretty busy around lunch time on the weekdays. Something plus a drink will run you about $10.

The service isn't bad. I hadn't gone to this place for almost half a year and the lady there remembered me right away and knew what my regular order was. They're nice people. It's a shame the food isn't that great.

My reaction when someone wants to go here: Ehhh... sure why not? /shrug

Tasman Teriyaki is consistently good and a great option for lunchtime. I work in the area and when I crave Japanese cuisine Tasman Teriyaki fulfills that craving. The daily specials are a good place to start or the bento box options. My favorite is the bento combination of Tempura, California Roles and Chicken. Every bento box comes with miso soup, green salad. Today I had the Sashimi Bento which came with miso soup, rice, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and 3 California tuna rolls. I am not a huge fan of Sashimi but really enjoyed my lunch!! If you are not a fan of raw fish then try the spicy chicken and Tempura. I think Tasman Teriyaki is a family business. The service is always good. Tasman Teriyaki also serves beer and Sake. I have never been here for dinner.

Tasman Teriyaki is a great place to eat.  The food is outstanding and service is very friendly!  They always have a special going on for every day of the week, with the exception of Sunday.

If you are in love with Sashimi, I recommend going there on Friday;  Friday's special is a great thing to get.  It's a mixture of all yellow tail, tuna, and salmon all in one bento.

I also recommend the combination bentos  1 and 2, they're just plainly awesome!

It's highly recommended!  I love this place a lot!

I've eaten here twice and that's all I need for the rest of my life.  I ate the Spicy chicken teriyaki the first time maybe a year ago and it was awful.

i went back recently and ordered a simple chicken teri bowl and it was terrible as well.  worst chicken bowl i ever had in my life.  chicken was like rubber and the teri sauce was awful.  the meal was barely edible.

I don't even know what to say about this place. It used to be pretty decent, but in more recent times it has just been a disappointment. At least for me. The california roll in the bento is always too mayo-ey, and the teriyaki is super bland. REALLY bland actually. Like they watered it down 1 part sauce to 6 parts water.

Do yourself a favor and travel down further to 1st street and try one of the noodle places that serve teriyaki. It's more worth you and and your taste bud's time n money.

    3 for service/cleanliness/friendlyness
    1 for food.

I ordered the bento with Sushi (maguro) and yakitori.

The miso was very weak, maybe 1/4-1/6 strength, and had no seaweed, tofu, or mushrooms. 1 out of 5.

The salad had some good lettuce, some lettuce past its prime, and an overly sweet dressing. 1.5 out of 5.

The 'California Roll' had fake crab, which is to be expected...but it was fake crab salad, rather than pieces of fake crab. 2 out of 5.

The sushi - maguro - sushi - was poor quality and stringy...1 out of 5.
    yakitori:

The yakitori chicken had bad taste, was not grilled well...covered in a very sweet sauce. 1 out of 5.

I love this place!  I don't know why ppl say the food is bad, but this Japanese food tastes great in my opinion.  The owners are very friendly and always remember you and what you like, they treat you like family.

It's true their not very busy from 2pm and on but that's because that whole chain of restaurants right there gets their business only at lunch time because the location looks kinda dead.

John, the owner, makes every sushi from scratch and really throws out the big guns, and the prices aren't bad compared to most Japanese restaurants.

IDK, for me it's always been great, and everyone I have brought to this place has really enjoyed it, so I hope you give it a chance too!
