Tartine is a cute & quaint place for brunch. The street it's on is peaceful and pretty. My friends and I were so delighted with the ambiance and food that we didn't mind squeezing around a tiny table-- not even when our dining neighbor aggressively piped into our conversation with her theories on why oil prices were so high.

While I enjoyed my eggs benedict, I really thought the star of breakfast was  the dessert we split-- chocolate & vanilla mousse with berries.

OJ was a close runner up oddly enough.

I wish I had known earlier it was BYOB, because I felt really left out of the shameless boozing from all the other patrons at 5pm on a Saturday afternoon. Iced tea's got nothing on a nice glass of pinot noir.

Tartine was not on the itinerary, it was more of a my-leg-is-really-starting-to-cramp-and-I-need-a-pl ace-to-sit-to- dress-my-wound-and-drink-some-soup-while-I' m-a t-it type of refuge point.

I thought it was awesome. The French Onion Soup was all cheese and no soup and the goat cheese croutons were like Bagel Bites but way fancier and much tastier. If I wasn't trying to reduce the size of my ass, I would have definitely sampled the yummy looking dessert offerings but unfortunately, my ass comes first.

Love the fruit tarts. They look delicious and are even better to taste!

Brunch is a nice deal for good food and the West Village cafe atmosphere (if not super crowded and full of estrogen).

My one nit pick is that they only seat you outside if you're having brunch. That means, even if it's 3PM on a Monday, they won't seat you outside for tea, fruit tarts, and sparkling lemonade. But the food is really quite good, as is the place itself. I love the West Village.

Had dinner here.  I order the Beef Mignonette, my date had the Sauteed Chicken.  The chicken was a good dish, while the beef was ok.  Service was pretty good, although they only take cash (somethign i didn't realize until after we finished eating).  place looked nice.

Oh brunch is SOOO GOOOOD.

It was all prix fix with a small glass of orange juice and coffee or tea.  The menu does however give you a choice in terms of entree, just a few choices though.  Most of them come with home fries.

I ordered the Croque Monsieur.  It was amazing. Piping hot, crusty, oozy with cheese and a nice slice of ham.  The home fries were really good too.  They were hearty chunks of skillet potatoes with plenty of well-sauteed and very sweet onion slices and scallion and a sprinkle of fresh tomatoes.  Delicious!!!

The only complaint is that the interior of the restaurant doesn't have great ventilation and its very warm if the weather is nice outside.  If the weather permits, I would recommend sitting at their outdoor section instead.

Service is very efficient and pleasant, even though it's essentially just two waiters for a pretty busy restaurant.  I've to say though, even though the restaurant is quite busy, you don't need to wait too long for a table.

Absolutely loved Tartine, its perfect for a small gathering of friends especially with the BYOB Aspect. Bring Cash, if memory serves me correct credit cards are a no no here. Very Quaint, and good for people watching! Try the Croque Monsieur, you wont be disappointed!

Tartine is one of my favorite bistros in the city, located in a tiny little space in the heart of the West Village.  The atmosphere is quite cozy and charming and the food is delicious -- the menu is full of simple French dishes that won't break the bank.  Try the herbed chvre salad and the bouche  la reine, and don't forget a bottle of wine -- Tartine is BYOB.

I left my hotel looking for breakfast and stumbled upon this place.  It's cozy with a nautical theme which I thought was rather odd.  The coffee was strong and refilled many times.  The breakfast pastries were piled high in the display case.  I chose an almond croissant which was rich and light at the same time.  I've been back a few times and always enjoy it.

Had a truly great meal.  Stupid me forgot to bring a bottle of wine for dinner, but it didn't take away from the great experience we had here.  I was disappointed that we were told we'd be seated in five minutes from when we arrived only to wait 30-40 minutes.  Once we were seated tho, the server was attentive, friendly and gave us great suggestions and recommendations.  My husband absolutely loved his sirloin and my sirloin was spectacular too - not to mention the yummy fries.  I ate every bit of my food and was so stuffed that we had to pass on dessert.  Highly recommended and great overall!

Tartine is a french Bistro with some pretty delicious but non-traditional menu items.

I came here with some friends to celebrate several birthdays over the years.  The space inside is small but cozy.  The best feeling in the world is eating at Tartine when its raining or snowy outside because of how warm it gets indoors.

Its so small its not even a Bistro really, its more like you're walking into someone's house, which is charming in its own right.

You bring your own wine, which was a revolutionary idea for me when i was around 21 and introduced to this place (though...come on...the idea is still pretty fun no matter how old you are, ADMIT IT).

I went for the dinner with a large group of people, which resulted in a long wait, so i suggest you keep your crowd small.  One of the waitresses looked like Miranda from Sex and The City which is a plus...

But MOST importantly, intimacy in a dinner situation is hard to come by.  This is why I think Tartine must exist in the world, because there's nothing more intimate than tight spaces, bringing your own wine, and being waited on by Cynthia Nixon.

Brunch here that sunday morning last summer was very memorable.  The place is small, there was a line when we arrived, and we were hungry, but we had read good reviews about the place so we waited.

Almost a year later, I still dream about the eggs norwegienne I had that morning (especially the hollandaise sauce) and how great it was to be enjoying the meal outside on the sidewalk with the sun smiling down.  I'm so glad we waited.

The only negative was that the outdoor seating was bit tight...we had to be careful not to shift our seats the whole time for fear of falling off the edge of the sidewalk.

I highly recommend this place for a date. Bring a great bottle of wine, get the mussels, and you can't go wrong at this tiny but cute-as-hell byob bistro. Some of the other appetizers were good, but the mussels were the best (and cheapest) offering.

My main dish of diced marinated chicken with guacamole was a total bust. I don't even understand why it's on their menu.

I'd been wanting to go to Tartine for a long time... ever since I read Sam P's review almost a year ago. But I was always deterred by the weekend brunch crowd... I don't really enjoy waiting in line for 1.5 hours to eat brunch. But I got up so late this Sunday (yeah... 2:45pm) that by the time I got there hoping to catch brunch it was essentially dinner time and the place was empty. So we ended up getting dinner instead of brunch, but it was great so I'm not complaining.

First, the place is BYOB with no corkage fee. That's an extra star right there. Second, the food was pretty good. It's French bistro food for the main part (mussels and frites, steak au poivre etc...). My bf and I started with the escargots and the beet salad for appetizers. Believe it or not, I'd never had escargots before, so I can't compare them to anything I've had before, but I wasn't a huge fan. The beet salad however was great (but I love beets so I'm partial). We then got the mussels and fries, both of which came in ample quantities and were quite delicious, as well as one of the specials that day, calamari a la provencale: calamari in a tomato sauce with olives, herbs etc... very tasty. $45 check for the two of us? hell yeah...

Now you have to be warned: this place is really tiny and cramped, so depending on who's sitting at the table next to you your experience may vary greatly. At first, some crazy woman was sitting to my right and was talking the whole time on a walkie talkie with the volume turned high, while she gulped down two bowls of soup and two huge plates of green salad. We tried to ask her, politely, to turn down her thingie, as it was getting deafening and very annoying, but she plainly ignored us. So rude! She's lucky my bf was in a good mood... as I know he was ready to lash out at her. Then a couple sat on the other side of our table, and they shared their bottle of Cotes du Rhone with us and we had a nice chat about the criminal thugs currently running this country. I won't say more.

It was meant to be to eat here.....the whole inside is small but designed in lighthouses....my favorite.
fortunately for us we just walked right in and sat right down for a fabulous dinner
the place is really small and short of knocking people heads with your bag ( two victims while I was there) or scraping by tables and having your jacket snag someones beverage( one victim) the food is delightful...

I had a tough time choosing my dish so i asked my neighbor ( i was practically sitting in his lap so I figured he wouldn't mind a quick question) He recommended the garlic chicken with french fries his wife had a pretty delicious dish but it escapes me because the GARLIC CHICKEN is the BEST EVER hands down sorry mom and grandma and bennihanna and foster farms this place has got the best ever....

i don't remember anything else except for how damn good the chicken and the shoestring french fries are.......yum yum yum!!!!!

its worth the wait if there is one:)

Brunch here is great. The prix fixe menu is a steal at $15. The meal includes oj, coffee or tea, and an entree. The location is also great because shopping is just around the corner for some post-dining retail therapy.

I had the Croque Monsieur which is warm brioche bread stuffed with ham and gruyere cheese. It's a little different than typical Croque Monsieur which is more open-faced style but this is better than any other kind I've had. The bread was flaky and warm and the cheese oozed out when you cut it open. I don't know how anyone would have anything bad to say about the food here. It's delicious. My friend had the gravlox benedict which was also good but I loved my dish more.

I took off one star because the place is a little cramped (I thought I would head-butt someone if I sneezed) but surprisingly the wait wasn't bad for Saturday brunch. Do try!

I have one word to describe this place, which is a hearty "meh." Yes, it's cute, and the BYOB status is appealing, but I've been twice and both times the food was sub-par. Certainly not worth the $19 price tag for a main plate that was 2/3 filled with French fries. I had the beef mignonette on the most recent occasion - it had more pepper than the Dutch East Indies company and was undercooked. Maybe I've been on two off-nights, but the mediocre food combined with a space so cramped you'll have a hard time not elbowing strangers means I won't be going back.

Sometimes, dinner is not just about food. Tartine is my favorite place to relax and lounge out. Its nice and cozy and the people who come here are great and friendly.

I can't remember how many times I've gone here for dinner the past couple of months but it's been quite a few. The space is small but cozy for the winter. After walking to Tartine in the cold, coming into a nice warm cozy spot makes me happy. It's a one room spot, with about 11 tables or so. There's usually a wait outside if you come at the wrong times. I find that the 6:30 - 7:00 is a good time for dinner to beat the crowd. People start bunching up around 7:30.

Even with the line outside, the waitress never rushed us. We were there from 6:45 till about 10:30 and had a sweet time. The BYOB is a VERY sweet deal and makes me love this place even more.

The tables are sized right, and make this place very intimate. This is definitely a spot to bring your good friend to catch up. The food is good, not particularly super French-y. Escargots, coffi, and other French fare are the norm (and they're good) but they also had a good selection of neutrals like steak and fries (also good, but yes, "peppered"). They do the "fries thing" so you might want to ask them to sub it out or else you'll have a lot of fries.

The desserts are good; the apple somethings are good. The tarte tain a la mode is good, but the tarte fine apple is better. The crme brulee is standard fare. There was also a sundae type thing we had before - don't order that. It's usually the glass that sits by the display case. It was only complaint I have with this place so far.

Tartine closes around 12 but you can stay till the last minute, when all the chairs are up. The waitress never rushed us even though we always just sit around. A couple of times, after a "not so perfect" dinner, we would walk to Tartine to end the night. It just makes things better.

Its relatively inexpensive, but remember to bring cash!! They don't take cards.

A very cramped (11 tables only), but wonderfully Village-esque option for brunch. The brunch menu is a bit pricey relative to most places in the village (prix fixe for $14.95, which includes OJ and/or coffee), but the food was great.

I asked them to make my Croque Monsieur a Croque Madame (same, but with an egg on top), and they were nice about accommodating the request. They home bake their own brioche, and the ham/cheese were perfectly melted into each other.

We ordered a Dacquoise for the entire table, and while I know it was a tasty dish, the crunchy texture of this cake wasn't really my thing.

The line outside Tartine excited my stomach lining, as did the fact that it was acceptable for me to roll in two bottles of vino strong.

I love French food and consider myself somewhat in tune with fine French cuisine.  Tartine was a bit of a disappointment.

All I can remember is getting something covered in peppercorns, so much so that's all I could detect - pepper.

The starters were better, we tried three different salads/appetizers that were all much more palatable than my meal.

I finished drinking my dinner disappointed and tipsy.  Needless to say, I stopped for one of NY's famous gyro carts near the Waldorf before I fell deep into a blissfully intoxicated sleep.

I love visiting NY and know there is so much better food out there so I probably won't go back for more pepper.

The BYOB thing was a huge selling point though . . .

8:30p on a Saturday night:  Hungry and reservation-less is not a good place to be.  After wandering around checking out the riduculous waiting times for a few places (Lupa 2 hrs, Extra Virgin: 1 hr) we were plesantly surprised by Tartine's quick 15 minute wait for a table inside (it was freezing).

I've walked by Tartine countless times and it always looks super cute.  Very small, quiet street, nice crowd.  No bar since its BYOB so the vibe is plesant and not very drunken.  A few outside seats, simple food, a smartly dressed, yet casual crowd make it feel French with a definate NY flair.

Inside its cozy and a bit festive (a little crowded, a little loud).  The small menu had many classic french items-- onion soup au gratin, steak frites, saucisson grille, etc.  We had the gravlox plate, onion soup au gratin, boeuf mignonette with frites.  The gravlox was generous and enough to share for 2.  The onion soup wasn't the best i've ever had, nor was it the worst.  Bouef mignonette came doused in a peppercorn gravy and was cooked perfectly to order.  Fries were standard.  Overall the food is fresh, unpretentious and classic.  Flavors felt french, not extremely authentic, but they didn't feel too americanized either.

Service is quick.  Not especially friendly but i understand the place was incredibly busy.

I'm giving it only 3 stars because i wasn't incredibly impressed by their food.  As a last minute resort on a Saturday night, its a very good place to be, and the food seems decent, but i wouldn't be coming back specifically for any of the dishes we've had.  Their good service and short wait time means that Tartine will probably become a neighborhood standby for me.  I'll have to report back on the brunch which i hear is much better!

This place was good. The line was around the corner, which it always is. The wait was kinda worth it. The food was good, but not the best. The prices were good. This place has a BYOB, which is cool. We bought a couple of bottles of wine from the market on 6th and drank them with dinner. There is no cork fee, since it is BYOB.

I recommend trying it!

I finally made it to have brunch here and it was lovely! I liiike! It's in a very quaint hood which ups its cute factor! It is a tiny place that barely seats more than 15 ppl indoors. There is outdoor seating as well.

The desserts look delish but we only ordered from the brunch menu. The brunch is prix fixed $14 (?) and comes with orange juice (not fresh), coffee or tea. The menu is straight forward and limited.

I had the Ham & Swiss Cheese on Brioche with potatos and my partner had the Salmon and toast with potatos.  I loved my plate and think I found my new "go to" brunch spot! I want to return to try their other plates!

The service was very efficient and fast but we didn't feel rushed by them. It was very tight and so expect to be overhearing other ppl's convo's as well as rubbing elbows!

Cozy home cooked French bistro is how I would describe Tartine, from the tiny dinning area with little pictures hung with care to the little tables all cramped indoors, it seems to me like a little old lady opened her home to people to eat in. Perfect place for Sunday brunch but when I went to Tartine's it was pretty late in the afternoon right after the sunset so our pictures are not as good as I had hope. But don't let the pictures fool ya, all 3 dishes we ordered were great and the added bonus was BYOB.

This time I went for something I have yet to try in my life, escargot ($9) being one of them, I got that as my main entre, Sharlene got the sausage cooked in mustard vinaigrette with roasted potatoes ($9) and as our starters fig salad ($7). The tiny little snails were great they were stewed in butter with minced parsley and garlic that were to die for and could have eaten more of; I think my order only came with 6-7 (no wonder those French women stay so slim) and the fig salad were more bountiful but only came with 3 figs only, it was ripe and very sweet on a bed a frise and balsamic vinaigrette. A little over dressed but not bad at all, and Sharlene's pork sausage was great never had them cooked like this before. I guess it is typical French, and the feeling of dinning outdoors while the cool Fall air wafting by us with the hint of smoky aroma of our red wine really warm me up.

more like 3.5 stars - the food is good, but not Amazingly good.

Cute, tiny, yummy.  This is the sort of discreet neighborhood place that you simply don't get anyplace but NY.  The herbed goat cheese crostini are to die for, and the chicken pot pie is flaky, creamy and comforting.  Service is casual, and it's BYOB.  Weather permitting, dining al fresco is the way to go.

Head around the corner to Magnolia for a post-meal cupcake!

If you can roll with the punches, Tartine is a cute, tiny, tasty, low-key bistro serving reliably delicious French bistro fare. Every single person in our crew loved their orders, from salmon wellington (a special) to beef mignonette.

Dining here is a pain in the ass. It's cash only, you bring your own wine, the lines are long, your elbow winds up iny our neighbor's salad, and the outside tables leave half your party two precarious inches from the edge of the curb.

But it's all so damn CHARMING that somehow those things end up being good memories. Bringing your own wine seriously keeps the bill down. The tight seating makes for highly amusing people-watching or eavesdropping. And you never know about the wait: on a recent Saturday night, we got our group of six seated within 30 minutes.

Aside: If you're looking for a slight upgrade in the neighborhood, or just don't want to wait, try Les Deux Gamins two blocks down at W. 4th & W. 10th.

P.S. Another possible reason I might like this place so much is because it gives me warm fuzzy reminders of the other Tartine, the fabled Mission Dolores bakery in SF. Mmm, orange-scented morning buns at opening time before journeys across the Golden Gate...

The food is bistro fare, which means mussels (excellently prepared) and bouchee a la reine and steak for supper. Maybe all at once. It's quaint and not in the least bit frilly... but the food is solid and comforting. Perfect for the approaching chilly evenings. Finish with the caramelly tarte tatin and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream =)

if you're dining companion is from la, you might start to cringe when she starts ordering a completely new dish, which is based *very* loosely on what appears on the menu.  i don't know why people from la do this so often.  all i know is that i would *hate* being a chef in that town.  anyway:

eggs florentine with homemade hollandaise gets changed to an all egg white omelette, no hollandaise.

the roasted potatoes it's served with becomes a salad with no dressing.

you might cringe because this is a french place, and the french rightly allow the chef to make the dish as he or she sees fit and seldom, if ever, ask for substitutions or reinterpretations.

i was in luck, though.  not only did they completely change around the dish to her specifications, they were very gracious about it.  this, during the brunch rush.

you probably already know the brunch is great here.  typically heavy breakfast foods (french toast w/ potatoes and bacon) are given a light treatment so you don't feel like going back to bed after you've finished a meal here.   this is one of the more consistently solid brunch options out there.

Although I'm not a big fan of hollandaise sauce (and therefore eggs benedict), this tiny restaurant serves a fabulous brunch.  Try the waffles -- you'll be moving into the neighborhood in no time.

We came here based on yelp reviews.  We got there on Sunday around 2:30 PM, and were seated rather quickly - only a 5 minute wait.  We were both in a bad mood, and got crammed into the corner practically sharing a table with our neighbor - a french traveler reading a guide book.  I am not a huge fan of sharing tables with your neighbor - some may call it quintessential west village-ish but sometimes you want to have your own conversation and not have to listen to your neighbors.  Luckily our neighbor was solo, and lucky for him we were in a bad mood and did not speak to each other much at all.

I ordered the french toast and my partner ordered the eggs noevegienne.  We were really bickering until the food came out, and did not say anything to one another really as we ate.  But the food was really tasty!  My french toast was made of crusty, buttery brioche, with a perfect texture - crispy crust and a perfect center.  Sprinkled with powdered sugar, and a small scoop of potatoes in the center topped with chopped tomatoes and scallions, and hollandaise sauce.  My mouth is watering as I think about it.  Excellent!  Usually when you order french toast at other places, you have to order a side of potatoes to get something salty.  But this place was good.  The tomatoes and scallions added the right bit of freshness and the buttery hollandaise sauce added a creamy, savory texture/ flavor.  Perfect.  The eggs norvegienne were also good.  Smoked salmon excellent - everything very tasty.  The food put us in a good mood and we had a great rest of the day.

All we saw on the menu were the brunch choices.  I would have liked to try the french onion soup, but maybe next time.  Brunch is about $15, and you get your meal of choice with coffee or tea, and orange juice.  Not the best deal, but the food is surprisingly good!  Very above average for a brunch, in my opinion.  I think this would be a nice place to eat on a warm spring day seated outside.

One of the first places in the city that really made me wanna go back for more.  The atmosphere is great -- the interior's pretty cozy and the restaurant just feels authentic.  The saucisson (sausage) appetizer is spectacular.  I'd recommend staying away from the steak and going for one of their many creative dishes, none of which stray far above the $20 benchmark.

Very nice brunch!  I had eggs norvegiennes, which were quite good.  (Incidentally, I think they may have had one of the most authentic Hollandaise sauces I have eaten.)  I would have liked a bit of a green salad on the side with a very light vinaigrette, to cut the heaviness of the eggs, fried potatoes, and Hollandaise sauce.  Overall though, really nice, and a good value - 15 bucks for brunch.

I've only been here for brunch... several times.  It's great.  It's one of those tiny and adorable west village places I like to take out-of-towners to to show them that New York City does not equal Times Square.

On one such visit we happened to see Hilary Swank a few tables away, and we were all like ZOMG!  Actually, no, we did what New Yorkers do -- acted like it ain't no thang -- and continued our conversation about the weather, with the occasional "Is that her boyfriend!?" interjection.

Anyway, the brunch menu is pretty small, but I've yet to witness or experience a bite that didn't satisfy to the core.  The Eggs Norvegienne (Salmon Bennedict) is absolutely outstanding.

I liked this place so much on my last visit to NYC, I visited it twice in the same day.  You may be sitting elbow to elbow with your neighbors, but that's all part of the charm.  The baked goods are drool worthy, brunch includes a glass of fresh squeezed OJ and dinner is BYOB, no corkage fee.  You can't go wrong with that.  Get off at Christopher Station, grab a couple of bottles of wine at the liquor store across the street from the station and enjoy the food at Tartine.

This is one my favorite neighborhood restaurants.  It's not perfect (cramped, long waits, inconsistent service), but....there's just something about it that keeps me coming back time and again.  I love the "wine-on-line" scene, I love the steak frites, the crispy chicken, and  god...the apple tarte tatin.

My favorite story from the line is this:  I was taking a youngish friend of mine there as part of my quest to Manhattan-ize him and show him that there are decent, reasonable restaurants in the city that are not chains.   As we sipped wine on the line, I said, "And keep your eyes open, grasshopper...this nabe is lousy with celebs and you never know who you'll see."  As my lips formed the words...BAM!  Uma T walked right past us.   I love New York.  And I love Tartine.
