Review Highlights
This location is the best, cleanest Target ever!
It's always busy, but this store has the staff and space to handle it, along with a monstrous parking lot. The short amount of time that I'm in front of the register blows my mind every time.
LISTEN UP! You absolutely must try the boxed mac and cheeses and risottos. They're so delicious and come in a variety of flavors--garlic alfredo, creamy tomato, roasted red pepper, asparagus, eggplant--for about $2.50 a box.
It's a target.
I love the new design out of it, such as the vines in the back. Their selection of things is also great, the Starbucks is also convenient, and lines in this one move fast, and they have no produce, but they sure do have a bunch of stuff like, microwavable quiches, cheap; yet tasty chocolates, and a selection of well, department store stuff.
4 stars due to the fact that they took the sky, as in I live right behind it in some apartments, and construction for this place was just noisy(What you thought I like to look at the back of department stores to see the decorations on it?)
Hey Target, how's it going? I waited forever for you to re-do your clairmont store. In the mean time I started shopping at Wal-mart. I like Walmart. And I like Target. But I am too tired to try and keep up with the fluctuating prices. I went in to target on a monday and patene shampoo was $3.33.....i should have bought it then because when I went back on thursday it was $3.77.
Walmart does the same thing.
Just beat their prices on a more consistant level and you will win me over.
Walmart you can do the same.
Target is a national franchise but like most franchises they vary between locations. This specific target is extemely well managed. I like the variety of food available.
I shop here mainly for clothes, and I really like the selction of Mossimo for men. I like the new remodel, but I do admit that I miss the old store. There was something quaint and homey about the other one, but Im still happy with everything here.
THEY HIT THE BULLSEYE....
I haven't been to this Target in awhile until I moved to Clairemont and I am so glad I moved near this Target!
If you haven't been here before, it use to be a pretty ghetto Target but they revamped and refurnished it and now it's AWESOME! The shopping carts look like big lego blocks- a plus! The store has been re-painted and the shelves are actually well stocked with items! The store is crispy and clean and the employees are even friendlier!
Wow. The new Target is big, but that's the only real difference I see. I was expecting something insanely fantastic, like the two-story Target in Mission Valley. What I found, upon visiting the newly-opened Target, was a Target with a Starbucks. Hmm.
I think what really failed to impress me was that they didn't seem to carry any more merchandise or lines than any other Target. I really like SheaMoisture Organic Black African Bar Soap (great for anyone with oily or imbalanced skin), which I'd previously found at the Target in Poway. When I asked an employee about the soap, he looked at me like he had no clue what I was talking about and proceeded to show me everything from Method products to liquid hand soap. When I kept telling him that none of these items were it, he looked at me like I was crazy and was making up this bar of soap.
Target gets points because it IS bigger than the old Target, and the employees are all pretty nice. Plus, it's not Wal-Mart. So there you go.
I got carded for buying a pack of bics!
I asked the snippet y cashier, "really"? "lighters? you card for lighters? how old do you have to be?"
"18" she responded.
So I rolled my eyes and provided my ID which clearly stated that I am 28!! I mean come on? Did I look like I was going to run out and commit arson? I thought I looked presentable for shopping at TARGET!
I have been carded for many things in my life, spray paint, guns, alcohol, airport security, border patrol, INS, normally I would be flattered, but that seems ridiculous!
After closing for 6+ months I was expecting something a lot different. I was very disappointed in this Target for many reasons.
First, the staff is not up to par with other Targets in the neighborhood (Mission Valley, Sports Arena). The staff at the Balboa Target lack professionalism, courtesy and class. - I know its just a Target but this was bad.
Second, what did they remodel?? *wow* a Starbucks and a tiny food area. They added some food items/frozen foods but a lot of people were expecting produce like a Target Greatlands. The Starbucks and seating area was filthy .. and only after being reopened for a few weeks? There was trash everywhere, I'm sure that would not fly at a real Starbucks location.
Third, like I mentioned above, the place is filthy. Trash on the ground everywhere, employees just walking around not giving a darn and dirty dirty floors ... grab a mop!
All in all, this place is filth ...
Yippie Target is open, but I love the old Target, they are more friendly and helpful. The cashier just put all my stuff in one bag and ruined the framed I bought although it was only $4 but still she should have at least wrapped the darn thing.
Wow a starbucks cool! well not too cool - my mocha light was yuck!
This is by far my favorite Target in SD! Since they redid it and reopened in late 2008, I LOVE this place. Is it weird that I really like their carts? I think it is. Their carts are entirely plastic, so none of the clanging sound escapes when you go to get or return your cart. Also, I swear this place always has whatever I'm looking for. The Target over in Kearny Mesa is always limited in their selections. But Target on Balboa! You've never done me wrong. Oh yah, did I mention that this place is HUGE?! Whenever I come to Target, I can't NOT spend money. I'll always find something that I may or may not need to spend my cash on. I'm almost sad that I'm moving further from this Target.
I love our new revamped Target! I have been in an out a few times since the re-opening (they didn't publicize, but they actually opened their doors on the 8th)... Cool new nearly-silent plastic carts...In and out fast with no problem, fully stocked, they even found some sleepers for my daughter in the back within minutes when the display was empty. Pretty large food section, seems to have everything except fresh produce... Lots of "new store" specials that mark everyday items up to 50% off! Only complaint is that the Starbucks seems to run a little slow. Both times I have stopped by it took 10 minutes plus to get my drink- think that this is probably due to new employees, so that should get better...
Hope it stays clean!
**Almost forgot, what happened on opening night. While I was walking through women's clothes, a woman near me started groaning and chanting "no, no, no"... Seriously. Turns out she was wearing a Calvin Klein dress that she had spent a few hundered dollars on at Bloomies... while looking at the nearly identical one by Mossimo hanging for the bargain price of $24.95. I pointed out to her that there was a difference in material and her belt was a tad different, but too funny! Huge selection of clothing by spotlighted Target designers!
Sooooo...I went to the 'grand opening' and though the outside looks rather impressive, new and shiny...i felt a bit let down on the 'new' inside. first of all...why was it closed for six months? i thought maybe it was going to be multiple stories like the mission vallley one....but no. the stuff was all moved around inside but honestly, looked pretty normal. nothing too 'super' about it. the grocery section was pretty extensive but i was surprised that the prices are not actually all that competitive.
im downgrading my score to 4 stars because it still rocks as a place to shop, but im super annoyed they were closed for so long for pretty much no reason all at, in my opinion. bummer :(

I love target and this target was MY target until they closed their doors in the spring to revamp… Read more »
New Target!!! Has a Starbucks cafe inside with Starbucks style furniture. They have new all plastic carts which are AWESOME! No more getting luck of the draw with the carts where some of the wheels would be stuck. I don't know if the new Target is bigger than the old Target, but it's definitely big! The employees here are so nice, my friend had 3 of them helping her with the same thing of finding a Hello Kitty tote bag, they searched the whole store but they didn't end up having it, but they found us a Target that did.
Omg, I forgot to add, these two guys came in wearing red shorts (one was shirtless but had a red cross painted on him). I don't know if this was supposed to be a Halloween costume or what, but they were hot, which made my Target experience that much better, haha!
As Target stores go: this one tops them all. Great selection, useful employees, the aisles are neatly stocked, the fitting rooms aren't full of dust bunnies. There is always parking and I can always find a cart or basket when I need one. What's not to like?
It probably helped that as I was walking in, a lady on her cell phone said, "Well that was one of the most pleasant shopping experiences I've ever had!" Now, if she primarily shops at Walmart that would come to no surprise, but was nice to hear on the way in to get some cheap groceries.
They definitely expanded this place. It's pretty huge. Ever since cheap ass grocery stores stopped doubling coupons I figured I'd make Target stop #1 and Vons stop #2. Definitely was happy to do so - most of their food is totally reasonably priced and they have a decent selection, for a Target. Plus they have a little food area up front, and an entire Starbucks attached!
For the most part, everything I needed was pretty easy to find. The only thing lame about Target is since their prices are pretty cheap to begin with, their red 'sale' sign often covers a price that is only a few cents lower. For instance, I was almost tricked into buying the on sale Pantene until I realized it was on sale for $5 rather than its original price of $5.04. Damn - now *that's* savings. I could totally lose it in my couch with all the other change I don't give a crap about.
If you like Targets, though, this one is a great one. Super clean, well lit and not too busy. Definitely an easy and pleasant shopping trip.
This target sucks. It's always disorganized, the people who work here hate their jobs/lives and have no desire to help you. Good luck trying to find what you need, it is probably there somewhere, just not where it should be.
The only reason it doesn't get one star is they have a food section, and it's *slightly* better than the mira mesa target.
I have been a fan of this newly revamped Target since it re-opened a few months ago. It is twice as large and much more spacious which is always a plus for me since I get claustrophobic from time to time. This Target is incredibly clean inside. The atmosphere is alright although it does tend to get stuffy at times presumably because the store itself does not have control of the ventilation system. The inside of the store and parking lot is bleh but what do you expect in Clairemont?
The customer service is good. There are times when I actually feel like I am being watched and followed by some of the female employees which raised some eyebrows. Most of the women who work here remind of either my high school librarian or the stereotypical college girl next door type. Nice selection but I seriously doubt any bachelor would go home with any of females who work here.
Apparently the company decided to get with the times and made this Target into a super store sporting a rather impressive grocery and frozen foods section. They also expanded their entertainment and electronics departments which are now located at the back of the store which was a bright idea. From what I have seen, the pharmacy is sub par. The technicians looked like they were brand new to the job and showed it with their overall lack of attentiveness and integrity.
I'm not sure I'm impressed with the mini food venue and starbucks in the front of the store. Seriously, do these people really think its going to make Target that much better than Vons? I don't think so. Coffee while you shop...what for? Isn't stimulating the economy more important than hyperactive, nervous adults running around a chain store? At least it's not dirty, overcrowded evil slave-exploiting Wal Mart. And for that we should all be happy.
Yay for a new ishTarget.
This one is very nice.
I dont know why I was expecting it to have items that the other two Targets in my 'area' dont have but I was. No luck in that department.
I love the new buggies, or shopping carts as you uninformed California people refer to them. Theyre plastic and very fancy looking.
The store was impeccably clean. I noticed it was running extremely low on merchandise but the is potentially because they just opened, or re-opened, and need to re-stock.
The associates were very helpful which was greatly appreciated.
I did locate the pumpkin flavored Hershey kisses that I havent been able to find anywhere. Sweet deal. I highly recommend them.
But sadly, like I said before...beyond kisses...nothing new.
All well and good. Im glad this one is closer than the nasty Sports Arena one and doesnt smell like chemical escalator butt like the Mission Valley one.
No crowds!!! I love how I can make my way from one department to the next without bumping my cart with others. Its clean and the employees are friendly.
I will never be rich as long as this Target exists. Especially since it is a brief ten minutes away from my house.
AHHHHHH. The newly renovated Target on Balboa is the Target to beat all other Target stores. And FINALLY, I no longer need to fight my way to Mission Valley to experience a super Target. Heaven must feel like this.
I love Target... (TAR_JAAAYY) and normally I'd give any store 4 or 5 stars....
However, today - with this location. Not so in love anymore.
In desperate need to some silver shoes for a wedding... I called ahead to this Target to see if they had my size in stock.
The woman who answered asked if she could help me find anything - and when I asked for the shoe department she sighed very loudly and said "OH LORDY!, let me see if I can find someone"
Sorry if I put you out lady!!!... turns out you didn't have what I was looking for anyway so I won't be shopping at this location again.
I LOVE TARGET. But I don't usually go around reviewing each one I visit. This one is special, they just re-opened it after a huge remodel and it's so nice and clean! Also the customer service is awesome. I went in today to return some extra bottles of sunscreen I recently bought for a trip but didn't use. I didn't have a receipt, so I expected to get a target giftcard, which I mean, it's like gold to me, so I was okay with that. BUT - they just looked up my credit card and refunded me fully! I love technology. And target.
If you've seen one Target, to varying degrees you've seen them all. This Target is tiny compared to the multi-level SuperTarget in Mission Valley, but I've visited this one more often, due to it's proximity to my former residence.
I wish I could say I avoid these one-stop-shopping destinations, but I can't. Target is brilliantly designed in such a way as to force a person to walk at least halfway around the store for anything, and Target's increasingly-attractive wares and low, low prices tempt me along the way. When I run into this Target for just one specific item, I inevitably end up with an armload of stuff--a skirt for work, adorable ice cream bowls, a DVD, a book, nail polish, etc--and have to walk around the store for a second time forcing myself to put things back.
Dear Target,
We first met when I was three or four, when you were no more than a big-box discount retailer - a K-mart with a commie color scheme. I'd run in and out of your racks of discount clothing while my mother perused your aisles - things were good.
I need to be honest with myself and acknowledge that our relationship turned cold when I first became my own shopper. I was just trying to be cool and didn't want to be seen with you. My friends thought you were dirty and old and I broke our unspoken pact of "cheaps trends before adolescent friends." For that, I'm sorry.
Little did I know that you would blossom into who you are today. I've seen the error of my ways and have returned to you, Target. In your newfound identity, you've furnished a great deal of my home, pervaded my wardrobe, and have even provided endless gifts for others as well as myself. I even bought an electronic soft dart board for $10 so that I can play darts in an inebriated state without worrying about my safety. That's the kind of thing you do for me, and I'm so, so grateful.
To boot, you offer me your products at respectable, affordable prices. Your servicepeople run somewhere between helpful and crazy, always approaching either (or both) of the extremes but never quite reaching them. But, they do so in that ever-comforting khaki and red.
I'm going to write it here because I know of no other way to express it (you were out of customer comment cards). I love you, Target. I truly do love you.
I always say this about Target: "My favorite thing about America!!!" (I'm Canadian)
You can't beat:
1. The ultra modern designers (even my toaster is suave)
2. Newest colors
3. Soft vintage T's (Sesame Street here I come)
Be cheap and be BAD!!! (it can all happen in those doors)
Man, the west coast sure loves Target! There's soooo many more Targets out here then there are on the east coast, at least where I'm from and where I've been. Not that I'm complaining or anything, I heart Target just as much as the next person. It's convenient, affordable, and has a great selection of just about anything you need for your home/apartment. The only thing that this location's missing is that amazing shopping cart escalator that I encountered in another Target location--completely new to me! Freakin genius, and it just makes sense.
Now, if SD could just open a Dunkin' Donuts, it'd be perfect :)
They had it shut down that long for just adding a Starbucks and redoing the parking lot? The grocery section is ok, but nothing exciting. You can go get a better selection of groceries at Ralph's, which is pretty much in the same parking lot.
I friggin' love Target. They always have cool stuff, usually it is pretty inexpensive. I probably go there at least once a week. The other best part of going to Target is that they always have deals on their end caps. Also they carry my favorite chocolate bar, Ritter. It is a German chocolate, and they carry it for 1.89. Most other stores charge over two bucks for it.
I love their Mossimo shirts and shorts. They have even been trying to sell dress shirts, pants and ties lately. I like their dress shirts with cuff links. That is totally cool.
I have never needed any help in Target. Their merchandise is pretty well organized, and I am not clueless or helpless, so I can find what I want and figure out the price. I am not delusional and expecting Nordstrom type of service. But I have been asked several times while shopping if I needed any help by employees.
I visited this Target over the weekend and it's the worst customer service ever that I had with Target. I was waiting outside the fitting room to try on some clothes. There were 4 ladies working in that area at that time. For some reason, they all look like they didn't see me. Two of them were busy sorting out clothes from the shopping cart. One was doing her own thing. I stood right in front of them for like 2 minutes and none of them had said anything to me. I got so angry and asked one girl if I can try on the clothes now. She then gave me a number tag. This is just ridiculous! The fitting room wasn't even full. Seems like they just don't care!!!
They re-opened it yesterday (Weds 10/8) and I went to have a look. It's not noticeably bigger than before but the layout is different. The front has a lot of windows now. The parking lot has been redone. They have Pizza Hut in the food court. Their $1 section is huge, now there is also a $2.50 section next to it.
It was kind of cool to actually find everything in stock for once, although since they are brand new there were absolutely no clearance racks yet (so no $2 pairs of shorts until maybe next month!). A lot of the stuff seemed to be covered in a fine layer of white dust...two weeks ago I saw people late at night arriving to work in red shirts, all the merchandise has likely been sitting there for a while and maybe the leftover construction dust settled on it.
This location has always been more crowded than "Secret Target" (on Othello), but they have plenty of parking.
I know that I've only written nice reviews tonight which means that this one should be awful and scathing, but I can't say enough about the cool new Target. I used to be a huge snob and even two years ago would have turned my nose up at the store, but the Target in Clairemont (please pronounce this one TAR-JAY with a french accent and some brutal snobbery) would have anyone change their mind. The stock is better than most, there's a Starbucks inside, and the store clerks even seem nicer. Could be their pride for working at such a swanky joint, but I didn't even get so much as a snicker when I couldn't work their debit card slider. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you are anti-Target but secretly curious what all the fuss is about like I was.
If you thought yelper Emilee H. was a "hardcore Target fan", you don't know my bf and I. We go to Target at least every 2 weeks, probably more. It's kind of sad. But this is our choice of Targets. If we were to be a Target store, we would be this one. It's unpretentious, accessible, and fun.
Parking is always super easy, its easy to get to, and they always have everything we like.
I just don't like how it gets really hot in the store. Where's the AC? Also that ridiculous dip on Convoy is a pain. But we love this Target so much, it still gets 5 stars.
Target has been consistently up there in providing for my basic toiletries and the occasional Wii remote and console when I need it. Great staff at this Target and they're usually really helpful. I've noticed that in their pantry/grocery items, the prices tend to be slightly lower on a daily basis than when grocery stores go on sale. The only downside is that there is a VERY limited selection. IE, if you don't like fresh mushroom prego, then you're out of luck. =P Otherwise its the perfect place to go to when you gotta decorate your dorm or get the cleaning supplies to mop up post-party!
The crib away from my crib to hang out. The icee is the best on a hot summers day when its too hot out and I'm crusing around down the isles in my wife beater tee. Soon to be a dual level store once they kick all the surrounding mom and pop shops out of the way.
Target has grown in the last few years from a discount department store to a hip (yes, hip) department store. From their huge selection of drug store items, to household goods (always scope out the paper towel and TP deals, and stock up!), to fashion, to bath towels, to electronics, they've got it. The nursery has some decent plants, and of course they are well priced. Their global home line has some neat stuff that could pass for more expensive home boutique items, but if you decide to redecorate in six months, you won't feel sick about getting rid of it, since you paid so little!
