SUPER CHAVELLAS! If you don't know what a super chavella is, please get educated and go to Tlaquepaque and order one.. or two (I'd stop at 3 unless you're trying to rage, in which case go for 4). It comes in a huge glass with a salted rim, and it's all frosty and refreshing. It's beer with lime juice and a shot of tequila, and it is amazing.
Moving on to the food. In general I'm pretty happy with the food (but after 2 super chavellas, who isn't?). No but seriously, the flautas are my favorite thing to get here and they are delicious. My boyfriend always gets the tacos and loves them. I've never really heard any complaints about the food and I tend to visit this place with a large group.
The one thing I really don't like about Tlaquepaque is that they won't seat you until your entire group is there. It's understandable, but can be frustrating at times.
The service here is alright. They're not the most attentive or friendly, but they aren't rude so it's not really a big deal.
Oh and parking sucks so make sure you go allot an extra 15 mins or so just for parking. The lot is really small so you generally have to find a spot on the street.
Overall, I really like this place. It's authentic Mexican food at really good prices, and if you're on the fence, just go to try the super chavellas. -

First time customer....
I came here with a friend a couple of weeks ago before traveling back to Seattle for the holidays. He said we had to try it because I LOVE Mexican food and he said it was the best.
First, we went to the one on Lincoln and even though the restaurant was full, they were NOT seating any new customers probably because they were packed and it was the night before Christmas Eve. We then decided to call the #3 restaurant who were also not seating any new customers. Finally after calling the #2 restaurant we were in route to will St. Immediately I was surprised to see how busy they were. The waiting area was full and it took us about 15-20 minutes to get a table.
We then both had the Super Chavelas (limit 3 per customer), one light beer and one dark beer and whoa! Those things are wicked!! Not sure if I would get one again, but they definitely make you feel good ;-)
I was shocked at their prices when looking at the menu. I had a combination of a taco, enchilada and burrito for 10.95 and it came with rice and beans. The food was excellent, the chips and salsa was great, and I loved their guacamole. I cannot wait to go back and take my boyfriend.
My friend said the one on Lincoln street is the best so I will have to try that one out and post another review. -

Parking is as terrible as Tlaquepaque #1 and service is ok.
The food is the reason why we are here in the first place right? Super tacos de Pastor and Chorizo are second to none. The Super Chavelas (2 Modelo's & shot of Tequila in a large glass) are just as delicious if not more. I blame these monsters for staying in my seat longer. Haha.
Cool place to sit, dine and drink. -

The wait for dinner on the weekend is ridiculous, but honestly what good restaurant isn't packed on the weekend? This place has a reputation of having poor/slow service but I think it's mainly because they are understaffed. But let's be honest, you don't come here for the fine dining experience, you come for the food and the CHAVELAS. They also have the best chips and salsa around, the freshly fried ones. I have to force myself to not fill up on the chips and salsa.
Good tacos and burritos but I usually come here for the enchiladas verdes. The best I've had! -
Review from Stacey L.
This is seriously my FAVORITE and go-to whenever I crave Mexican food. The outside doesn't do the place justice, when you step in it's definitely a full restaurant that can house 70-80 at once.
The menu is very reasonably priced as well as extensive. A super burrito is just $5.75, a quesadilla $5.50. This is also the place that has converted me into a carnitas lover. I used to never favor carnitas because I thought it was just shredded pork that was extra salty, but oh does this place do it right! The edges of the carnitas are slightly crispy, and the inside is ever so tender. The avocados in their super burritos are also very fresh. Among my favorites here are also their fajitas (particularly their shrimp, which are large and succulent) that come with fresh veggies and your choice of corn or flour tortilla, or a combo of.
Service is generally attentive, chips & salsa and waters get refilled quickly, but they do get pretty busy and you just need to be understanding of that.
They are also known for their Super Chavelas, which is essentially a large goblet of beer with tequila. Before you cringe, please try one of these. The drink is actually very sweet and you can't taste the tequila at all. Needless to say, it is strong without tasting like it and it will definitely hit you hard.
Last but not least, their chips and salsa are absolutely amazing and the best I've ever encountered. You and your dining companions will definitely find yourselves munching on a couple of baskets of these. The chips always come out hot and the salsa is flavorful and packs some heat.
The only downsides are that I wish it was opened later (seems to close at 5PM daily), and their parking lot is pretty small.Listed in: Restaurants that never fail…

This is a good place if you go early or for lunch. It does get crowded and if you're w/ a larger party there is a wait. They won't seat you unless everyone is there. The 7 mares soup is the best! Always lots of crab, fish, and shrimp. Chavellas are the best around!

Came here for dinner. The food was pretty good, but the service was horrible. We got here pretty early so there wasn't a wait for a table, but halfway through dinner I got up to go to the bathroom and the waiting room was packed. The chips were fresh and the salsa was definitely some of the better salsa I've had. I ended up ordering the super burrito and two small tacos (one with carnitas and one with carne asada). My dad ordered one of the combination plates with a tamale, burrito, and tostada. I personally think ordering a la carte is a better deal (unless you LOVE rice and beans) as opposed to ordering a combination plate. The super burrito was good and the fresh avocado was a nice touch (and there's rice and beans inside), but I really loved the small tacos. The carnitas were some of the best I've had, but the carne asada was so-so, tender but not amazingly seasoned. The tacos were covered, and I mean COVERED, with cilantro (which I love) and fresh salsa.
The service on the other hand was awful. After taking our order, the waiter started walking away and we wanted to make a last minute addition to our order so we called him back. But instead he dismissed us with a wave and walked away and didn't return until he came back with our food. He never came back to check on the table later, and I had to ask three different people for a to-go box before finally getting one. Had the service been better I would have given this place three maybe four stars, but the service was some of the worst I've ever had. Maybe I'll try Tlaquepaque #1 or 3 next time... -
Review from robert k.
Nice service, but I was really unimpressed with the food. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning.. I love authentic Mexican for breakfast.. what I got was soggy french fries with 2 overcooked sunny side up eggs on top, super greasy and gross chorizo, and a flavorless green salsa verde on top.
The only saving grace was the delicious sangria and the amazing horchata. Also, I really enjoy their extremely fresh chips and their very spicy salsa.
But the food, like I said, was very lacking, overly greasy, and just not that great overall. Not a very good experience, plus they play a radio station over the loud speaker, so half the time I'm hearing commercials and bad Hispanic DJ voices.
Avoid.. :-/ -

This place was OK.
The obvious reason to go to this place is for the Super Chevelas. I mean you can't beat a huge alcoholic beverage that comes in a huge goblet for $6.
Food itself was average. I myself ordered a super carne asada burrito, and my friends ordered a chicken quesadilla and a chimichangas plate. Nice portions, but the food itself was average. Nothing mind blowing. The chips and salsa are free and I very much enjoyed them, especially the salsa since it had some kick in it.
One thing that did annoy me though was that the music was too loud, and when I had to talk to my friends, who were literally less than 3 feet away from me, I felt like I had to yell at them. -

Gotta throw down four stars for this hot spot!!
Dark Super Chavelas are IT!
Giant glass of beer (salt/no salt rim at your liking) with a double shot of tequila dumped in along with what seems to be some lemon squeeze/juice...I'm totally guessing, but I'm pretty confident about this one. FYI, the regular chavela has a single shot of tequila.
Paired my super chavela with some chicken tacos. Pretty simple and tasty. But you're only really here for the chavelas anyway :p
Once seated you're served chips and salsa. You can also ask for some guac.
There are a few 'minor' twists and turns to this place, but I suppose it's to maintain order and avoid hassle.
- First, ONE check. No splitting up the bill at all.
- Second, you're limited to THREE chavelas just to be sure you don't 86 yourself outta that place. They are hefty.
- Last, you have to put your own name on their clipboard placed on the podium once you walk in. Weird. I walked in and waited a few for someone to come by. Nobody came up until another customer came in front of me and put his name on the list. I followed suit shortly after feeling a little dumb since there was no sign telling me I had to do so...or I just didn't see it.
Definitely coming back here for more drinks and dining.
Fun for large parties and birthdays. -

I really enjoy this place every time I go. The dishes are well presented and depending on what you order can range from average to large portions. Only draw back is if you have a large party of people that you are going with, make sure you have everyone in your party there on time because they will not seat you until your party is complete. Service can be a tad on the slow side, but if you call in advance for a pick up order, it is promptly done in 15 mins. Prices are somewhat reasonable, but certain dishes can get pricy. Other than that, no issue and I would recommend.

I've only eaten here with large groups so parking and getting seated can be cumbersome. The place is always busy around dinner time on weekends.
Can't go wrong with the dark or light super chevelas. They have a sizable menu that offers a lot of variety, but I'm usually here to drink and end up getting a mix of carne asada, carnitas or chicken tacos. Paired along with the delicious chips and salsa, it'll hold me down for the night.
Service for a large group was good. They seemed to always make sure we were taken care of drinks wise from what I remember. -

Finally... I got to try Tlaquepaque #2!
First time around I ordered the chicken super burrito. Meh. It was good and all, just not great. Kind of plain. They don't season the chicken very much so I ended up dumping an entire dish of salsa over it to give it a little more flavor.
Second time around I went with the combo plate and was pleasantly surprised to find it absolutely filled with flavor. The taco, chicken tamale, and beef enchilada were all super tasty, especially with the side of sour cream I asked for.
Balazs went with the super burrito but ordered it wet style and wasn't disappointed (although he ended up pouring salsa on his too!). Dan went with a combo too and also opted for the famed beer and tequilla thing that everyone raves about.
Looks like this spot is going to make it into the usual rotation afterall! -

The food was meh, i've had better; however, the Super Chavelas made up for the food. The service was pretty good, they are pretty friendly here, but like everyone else said it was pretty damn loud in there, so be prepared to yell over the loud music, and people.

I have been a long time customer at this location and today I had a terrible experience here. Today it was very busy and two people decided to bring their dog in with them, while they ate. The woman took her dog out of its purse and sat it on a chair. The dog then put its head on the table and drank from a glass that customers also drink from. This dog did not look like a service dog and even if it was a service dog it should not have been seated on a chair with its head on the table and drinking out of a glass.
We told three employees and the owner and manager about this, yet nobody spoke to them about it. We had to get to-go boxes for our food because the dog being on the table and drinking from glasses given to customers was too unsanitary and made us lose our appetites. -
Review from Alena B.
There's nothing wrong with any of the Tlaquepaque locations but I really don't see what all the hype is about. I much prefer Puerto Azul farther down the road on Lincoln. There isn't really anything wrong with these locations and if you go in person you get chips at your table (you don't get them to go for free). I find that these restaurants are often hot (not using their a/c or don't have a/c).

Parking is a pain, the wait takes a while. BUT the chips and salsa are fabulous :) Great portions, I always leave full. The service could definitely use some work but overall decent.
For dinner I had chicken enchiladas, they were very savory. Overall, the food is good, nothing too crazy. -

I loved the food here, but there were a number of issues that I just could not ignore!
Annoying:
-The parking lot is extremely small, so you will usually have to find street parking the surrounding neighborhood
-The hostess wont seat you until every single person in your party is there, even if you want a round of drinks first. The "bar area" is a tiny side table/almost non-existent, so that's not really a good alternative.
-The 2 margaritas I had were very weak, and not very good. Did not feel a buzz even after 2,and I am a light weight. The margaritas are not served in a margarita glass, they come with LOTS of ice in a small water glass. For a Mexican restuarant. this was surprising.
Bad:
-The restuarant was HOT inside, even though it was only in the 60's outside. They need to get better ventilation, or pay for AC, because there is seriously nothing worse than eating hot Mexican food when you are already sweating!!!!! We went in a little cold and inside it felt like 90 degrees.
-The restrooms are pretty deplorable. Not sure how these pass health inspection. There is an open hole in the middle of the female bathroom where a drain should go/ My husband said the male restroom was vomitous. If you can hold it until you get home, HOLD IT!
Good:
-The #11 plate, and the flautas were both delicious. They came out piping hot, and so did the beans and rice. Everything tasted like it was right off the oven.
-The chevelas, both light and dark, are always a huge hit and were so with our group this weekend as well. -

HELL NO!
Alright, the chevala or super chevala or whatever was the best thing there, and it's a drink.
Living in LA, I've gotten to taste some killer Mexican food (hint, hint...for you bay area people who are visiting LA, try Salsa and Beer), and this place just fell way short.
My friend (bless his heart) was raving about this place. I really don't blame him, I blame the lack of Mexican restaurants in the area for his eagerness to take me here.
We ordered a round of chevalas or super chevalas, whatever, they were good. I could have went through five or six of those things, but I was driving, so...no.
We then ordered chicken nachos for the table, which were ok. For entree, I ordered the carne asada plate, house specialty btw...
Suuuuuuuuucked!

D isappointing
It was super thin, super well done, very chewy, no flavor. I didn't like their beans either, as a matter of fact, I'd be very surprised if they weren't canned beans. The rice was blah, and I didn't like their chips, which really sucked, because their salsa was actually pretty good.
I would come back, but I'd only stick to drinking those delicious chevalas and maybe some chips and salsa. -

First time customer. We loved it. We were from out-of-town and received a recommendation from a local San Jose resident to try Taqueria Tlaquepaque for good Mexican food. We weren't disappointed. It was excellent. We parked on the street as there was no parking in the lot. We only waited a few minutes for a table.
The chips and salsa were fresh. The salsa was spicy - just the way I like it. I had the chicken enchilada. It was so good. My friend had the chicken fajitas. The portions are large and we both didn't finish our plates. We went home full and very satisfied.
I hope to return here again someday. -

OK, this place is indeed a dive, yes it is old school cheese laden portions, BUT the chavelas are damn good :) I write this review in honor of Cinco De Maya, which should be quite telling.
You will need to get here early, or be ready to wait. Again, the chavela's are good, margarita's a bit watery, but the food is tasty. Very nice family atmosphere, lot's of noise and kids. The menu is diverse, I'm a sucker for carnitas, and I wasn't disappointed. Rice and beans were also good. Service was decent, especially for how busy the place is.
Parking is also short.
So, you need to be in the mood and be ready for this type of dive, but it your down, you'll enjoy it! Not sure I'd come here on a first date, but it works for with 3 families with 7 kids and dads who need to quench their thirst. -

YES THE CHAVELAS ARE THE BOMB!......but service still makes it only deserve one star.
Actually, the older asian bus boys might make it deserve two. If only they were my waiter, since they are always coming around and being attentive. I came here a bunch of times all for the chavelas and I have gotten the worse service everytime. Here are some of my major pet peeves about this place
1 Of course all their stupid rules about drinks, seating, and splitting checks. I was ready for that just after reading reviews
2 Every waiter, whether the place is slow or busy, always rushes you. I never get asked if their's anything else they can do before they bring me out the bill. I am always on my first or 2nd chavela when they just bring out the bill. UM EXCUSE ME BUT I WANT ALL OF MY THREE CHAVELAS!
3 you really have to expect your waiter to never attend to you. I waited 15 mins to receive menus from my waiter....than another 15 mins to take my order. The food came out fast and I didn't see my waiter again for 30 mins! Waste of time!!
Everyone at this place is RUDE! the chavelas are good so go there if you like having those but otherwise just use caution. -

This place reminds me of being in mexico or somewhere in the carribbean... but the good news is the food is good!
Service was so-so... but you should check this place out just for the super chevales. First time I've ever tried it.. I'm hooked! I'd say about 80% of the tables ordered it...
The food was so-so... but I would definitely come back just for the chevales and the horchada. -

Chavelas! Chavelas! Chavelas! I've always heard how great the chavelas were here and everyone is right! They are mighty tasty.
Went there for Cinco de Mayo this year so the service wasn't all that great since everyone was in a Mexican food mood that day and the waiters seemed to be overwhelmed, but the food is delicious. Being Mexican myself, I have to say this place has very authentic Mexican food. I can always tell how good a place is by their rice and beans and they were almost as good as my grandmas. Definitely going back for more food and plenty more chavelas. -
Review from nellie t.
If you are super hungry and craving delicious Mexican food on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night, do not come here. You will wait at least an hour, and just get cranky and hungry and irritable (not that I'm speaking from personal experience or anything).
If you are only somewhat hungry and could go for delicious Mexican food on the above-mentioned nights, then please, by all means, stop by here.
You will still wait, but you won't end up in a hunger-induced haze. Instead, after the hour-long wait, you'll be just entering that "I want to eat everything" phase, and will enjoy the food that much more.
I hope that made sense. I only write it to save you and your loved ones grief from watching you turn into a Hungry Thing.
I really like the food here. I really, really like the food here. But, their level of customer service (almost non-existent) coupled with their poor seating management makes each dining experience something you have to mentally prepare yourself for.
My internal dialogue usually goes like this:
"Man, am I craving Tlaquepaque! It's so good! I could go for a enchilades verde with a super chevalas. Delicious! They even serve burritos the size of my arm!
BUT! I'll have to wait. and I won't get seated unless my entire party is there. Everyone better bring cash too, because, they only allow one bill per table. And, their service is notoriously slow.
Ok, fine. I'll go. But, one of us has to get there at 5PM to get our names on the list. I call not it!" -

This restaurant is tucked away in the willow glen area of San Jose.
I went here last night with a few friends. We were seated quickly and ushered to one of their middle tables. Their tables and chairs need a little updating, but it could be the style they are going for.
They took our drink order and gave us their chips and salsa. Their chips were a nice thickness, were warm, and fresh! Their salsa was also a good spiciness and tasted very fresh.
My date and I decided to share two different plates. He got the chile relleno platter with rice and beans and I got two tacos a la carte (one vegetarian and one chicken). I first delved into the vegetarian taco ($2.65). It was so delicious. The ingredients of pinto beans, rice, pico de gallo, and fresh avocado all wrapped in a fresh corn tortilla was absolutely delicious! Since I devoured this soft taco I wanted to get into the chile relleno ($10.48) that was waiting for me on his plate as well. I tried the chile relleno and it was dripping in cheese. I generally like my chile relleno where I can taste the batter and sauce. The cheese made it impossible to taste it properly.
My other friends got the quesadilla platter and beef flautas platter. The flautas were HUGE! She said they were really tasty and they looked it too. She was disappointed that they only had chicken or beef flautas and not a potato option.
Our bill only came to about $32. The service was so, so...I would definitely come back just for the vegetarian taco alone. -

Customer Service Warm Welcome and super Friendly service um how about NO!! they do not know the first thing about how to treat customers, the place its self needs help..The bathrooms are horrible just like that service..The Food is ok guess it depends on the mode of the cook..Cause Ive had great food and then gone back to order the same dish and it was horrible..Large Parties are probably not welcomed..Since they dont take reservations you better get there super early and hope all your guest are there cause if you have one missing guess what they will not sit you. -
Review from Nate R.
I had heard things about these guys before I even walked through the door. There were rules and regulations at Tlaquepaque and the employees were enforcers of said rules. Sure enough, there's a placard on the host stand laying out all the various ways they will NOT accept payment. The fact that these guys are supposed to be the total taco Nazis only made me want to eat here more!
We arrived about 15 minutes before closing time Sunday night which might explain why nobody was in a huge hurry to seat us. When we finally got seated, I was surprised to see that service was pretty friendly and prompt. I think we ordered a beer, a chevela and a couple of glasses of water to start things off.
For dinner we ordered enchiladas suizas, enchiladas verdes and an order of guac to go with our chips. The guac was perfect and the surprisingly large serving disappeared over the course of our dinner. The enchiladas suizas which were on my plate looked excellent and were absolutely average.
I kept thinking maybe the complaints about service and attitude were a little overblown. They never did bring us our water, and that would be my only complaint. I was really looking forward to some attitude - next time Tlaquepaque, bring it!!Listed in: Mexi Can-DO!

Avoid eating here if your lactose tolerant. Their food was served with lots of cheese. All of our combination platters were served really hot and lots of cheese. The plates were hot, too. The complementary nachos were warm and tasty. Sodas were served in cans.

Oh, weird. Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet.
All I care about here is the SUPER CHAVELAS!
Lime, tequila, beer, and salt. What better reason to you need to come here?
The rules to drink are pretty lame, you must order a meal since they're creepers. The trick is..... Order your drink when they ask you if you'd like something to drink (before your meal). When you get your drink, say you need a little more time to order. Then, you CHUG CHUG CHUG that chavela before she gets back!!! Order another with your meal.
wait.. maybe we're just drunk... and we thought it was working..
I had 3, friend had 6, boyfriend had 5, our waitress was really cool about everything.
I ordered a carnitas quesadilla, which was really good. I've never really had fried carnitas before, but it went really well in the quesadilla. I think it needed just a little more cheese.
If you'd like to shake things up, order a side of the "red sauce" (which is what they put on the wet burritos). It's a nice slightly sweet and tangy hint to your quesadillas.
I love salt. -

The good: chavelas. prices
The bad: The wait
The ugly: That damn wait list that is left unattended and is not patrolled and someone puts their name in front of you. (hate you people)
SO I went here tonight for the third time. I have always enjoyed my food here, but perhaps that is the alcohol talking. This place is odd but I like it better than tq#1.
salsa is hot.
soda is in cans.
carne asada is tasty
carnita's is melt in your mouth good
3 sopes plate is pretty damn filling and amazing
chips are salty and greasy.
They limit your chevelas intake to 3, but with a big group they tend to forget how many one person has had. I warn you three is enough though.
Margaritas are small. SMALL.
Do not expect to know what your waitress looks like, she won't be at your table enough.
HINT: order your drinks and food at same time. Or else you won't see your waitress for another 20 minutes. -
