i bet this place cooks with real lard. and that's how you know its good.

Chevelas....check!
amazing guac....check!
bacon quesadillas.... check!

That right there is the making of a nutritious meal that satisfies any food pyramid ive seen.

This place is fan fucking tastic.  I really really look forward to coming here.  The service sucks, but it almost becomes secondary after a few drinks and some home made Mexican food.   And if that isn't enough, you got some hot eye candy with the 12'x5' tile mosaic of the Aztec warrior and his injured maiden.  Its really an adventure for all the four senses: Sight, Taste, Taste and Taste.

I would avoid coming here if your in a group larger than 4, or if you are in a hurry to get anywhere.  But if your ordering a Bacon Quesadilla (Combination Quesadilla) you really shouldnt be in a hurry  to get anywhere anyhow.... except maybe a bathroom later...but in a good way.

Connie and Marcel took the bf, a friend, and I here for dinner, and I can't stop thinking about it!

The salsa is delicious... I love my spices, and even though I wished the salsa was hotter after hearing all the hype, I still really enjoyed the fresh chips and salsa!  I was nearly full before our entrees came from snacking on them, but I ordered the enchiladas, which were absolutely delicious!  I couldn't stop scarfing them down, even after I was already stuffed.  The bf had the tacos, which were also good, especially the bang for the buck!

I also heard of a Chevela for the first time.  It's a Mexican lime beer, and if you order the "Super Chevela," it comes with a shot of tequila in it.  Ginormous in size, but surprisingly easy to drink... you could definitely get in trouble with these!

Definitely recommend this place for good food at good prices.  Prepare for a long wait, but it will likely hit the spot!

Nice, tasty burritos with good spicy salsa in this establishment. I do like the way they marinate their meat. I do want to return to try out their fried meat/ fish(if there's any). Their burritos had a lot of ingredients in them and they match

The service, while efficient, could be a little rushy for some. I still think it's a decent place that I could go to again and again to try other things.

We went here because of the coupon I've been seeing in the Metro newspaper - buy 1 get 1 FREE on a combination meal #9-18, excluding #13 M-Th.

We went to the original location which is at Lincoln & Curtner.  Parking is very limited, but you can go up the road on Lincoln for street parking or residential parking on Franquette Ave.

FREE chips & salsa given.  I didn't try the chips but J. said they tasted homemade.  Salsa I thought was just ok.

I got #9 combo platter: enchilada, taco & burrito for $10.50.  No substitution so you get cheese enchilada, taco is either beef or chicken on crispy shell; burrito: chile verde. Comes with refried beans & Mexican rice.

I found the food pretty boring w/ tons of cheese!  refried beans average, Mexican rice average, cheese enchilada -ok; taco: chicken dry; burrito w/ chile verde just ok.

J. got #11: enchilada, burrito, & chile relleno $10.50.  She seemed to like everything.

Sangria Senorial $1.75 - just a bottled non-alcoholic drink.  Tasted like a flat fruit soda drink.  180 calories.  Not recommended.  Update: Just saw it available at CVS for .79c on Fri 10/30/09.

Service was slow even though it wasn't busy at 5pm.

Credit cards taken over $10.  Separate bathrooms near the front entrance in the back.  Music can be too loud - can't talk in normal voice here.  A/C is on or they don't have heater on a cold fall day.

I can't recommend eating here.

I've been wanting to try this place forever. Like others, when I drive by it, I always think it's closed. Not the most inviting storefront and very tight parking with only a few spots out front.

I think this is one of those places that you go for the basics. I have to say that my carnitas super taco for $3 was fabulous. Much bigger than the small tacos you usually encounter at authentic Mexican places. I was full off of just one. With the free chips and a 90-cent soda (they give you the can)...that is quite a deal! The double soft taco was filled with grilled pork, slices of avocado, beans, rice, cilantro, etc. all inside. It was not the kind of taco where you feel like the rice takes up most of the space. In this one, it was the nice, chunky carnitas.

Also tried a taste of the enchilada suiza plate. Good, not great. The beans with cheese and the rice were good that came with it. Again, though, I think at a place like this...you should stick to the basics like tacos. :)  Muy bueno!

I can see where service is not their calling here....but that said, we were seated and served quickly and got a few smiles. No one checked back in, but sometimes that's overrated. ;)

PROS:
Chevelas! or Super Chevelas! (Really Big Beers with lemon and a salted Rim) Yumm! Salsa is also yummy, the perfect amount of spice.

CONS:
No one was at the front to greet you or seat you, we had to walk all the way in through the restaurant to let someone know that we were there and ready to be seated. The Chips were super greasy, I got a pimple the next day! Parking is terrible! Theres only 5 spaces!

FINAL ANSWER: GO!! but only of the other Tlaquepaques are closed!

We love Tlaquepaque!!!! MMMMmmm a round of Chavelas please! We go here almost every Wednesday and Sunday either before or after church since it's just around the corner. I've taken bites off my sister's, brother-in-law's and husband's plates every time they order something different because I can't seem to order anything else besides their Cheese Enchilada con Green Chile.... sooooooo cheesy! The beans are so flavorful and the rice is fantasmic! They fry their own chips and make their own salsa which we can never get enough of... I wish they would upgrade to bigger chip baskets instead of us asking for more every five minutes! haha God I miss this place!

Top Ten Reasons why you should eat at Tlaquepaque #1, 2, and 3:

10.   You find it amusing to read all the rules written on their menu, table top, and on the door, and think it's funny that there are more rules than there are menu items.

9.  You like menus thrown at your table that are covered in old salsa, dried food, and hair which begs to question: if they are not paying attention to the small details of cleanliness, what are they doing behind the scenes in the kitchen?

8.  You don't mind being ignored from the minute you walk in the door.

7.  You don't mind being ignored once you're sat at the table.

6.  You don't need water or other beverages to accompany your meal.

5.  You want to try out your high school Spanish as the servers do not speak English (or pretend to not understand English).

4.  You're OK with eating food that you didn't order because your server didn't get the order right and when you try and explain this, she says, "that 's what you ordered I won't fix it!"

3.   You enjoy seeing the wait-staff stand in a corner staring blankly at you as you jump up and down to get their attention.

2.  You like that they play music at 100 decibels even though you realize that they are trying to make you uncomfortable so you will not stay long and enjoy your meal.

...and the number 1 reason why you should eat at Tlaquepaque (Drumroll)...

1.  You think it's cool that owner Waldo Navarro has decided to run a business where he believes he can afford to lose customers because he can rest on his laurels (or chavelas) and offer poor service, mediocre food, and an unsanitary environment!  (Cymbals)

I'm not a big fan of Mexican food...but this place actually makes someone like me want to return every week!!!  It is always packed, whether it be a weeknight or weekend.  I can definitely say, the wait was worth it!  The margaritas are super good - though I must recommend everyone try the chevalas!  I'm not a beer drinker myself, but those were pretty damn deeelliiccious!! :-)

Can't go wrong with any of their burrito choices - make sure you ask for that special sauce on the side (sorry, forgot the name of it...but it's like a red sauce.)  The chimichangas were super yummy as well as the enchiladas.  My friend has also gotten the huge chicken tostada salad and for a person who doesn't eat veggies, her big crunchy bowl looked pretty amazing!

Great place to pig out and hang out with friends.  Baby friendly as well!!!  Parking sucks, but plenty of street parking.

I don't really come here for the food. Whatever I order to munch on is on a whim because they won't let you order chavelas without pairing it with food. I've had the regular and super chavelas. They were both satisfying but I would go with either depending on your mood. As for the food, the chicken taco was rather plain but it wasn't bad. It gets pretty crowded and service has been consistently so-so. There's no one to seat you so you kinda just walk straight in and make eye contact with someone and sit down.

The food is good, the drinks are big, and the Salsa is hot. The quality of the chicken is superior to any other local taqueria I've been to. Yes, the service can be spotty at times but I don't really walk into these type places expecting 5 star service. In fact Tlaquepaque management, if you're reading this, here is my suggestion: Put in a fountain drink station, a small bar, and a salsa station and let people help themselves.
Cliffs:
-Good food with fairly low prices
-Spotty service at times
-Definitely recommend

It seems to me that the prices are a little high for the food that the restaurant offers.  I got the #23 enchiladas De Mexicana I think was the name.  It was good but nothing to rave about.  I also ordered spicy pork filled taco's, which were amazing.  When I go back I will get a full plate of the taco's, very happy with those.

Service was very fast...as to be expected from a place like this in San Jose.  The atmosphere is very relaxed and they did not rush at all.

I got the super chevelas to drink and it def did the job.

Overall it was a good experience, good food service and decent prices.  However I wouldnt rate it above some cheaper taqueria's tho.

what a freakin hole in the wall gem.  we were told about this place from a co-worker awhile back and have been meaning to try it...it's just that everytime we passed by, it looked closed...so we never went in.  today, i was just craving some good mexican food...so we looked up the reviews and some of y'all scared me.  i thought i would be walking into service hell.  boy, was i mistaken.

we were greeted as soon as we walked through the doors.  chips, salsa, and water came our way in a matter of seconds.  the server came and took our order.  AND she spoke english (to those of you who said they don't speak a word of it).  our drinks came out in a flash...and so did the food.  AND...she came back and asked if we wanted anything else.

can i first just say how freakin amazing the super chavela was?  the super chavela is a big thing of beer and a shot of tequila with a salt rim.  man...it was good...it was damn good...especially afte a really long day at work.

the chips and salsa were yummy.  the salsa surprised me at first cause it definitely had a huge kick to it.  at the end, the salsa dish was pretty much licked empty.

ok...on to the food.  i ordered the steak tlaquepaque.  this was exactly what i've been craving.  the plate was full of yummy goodness...2 tortillas, beans, rice, and multiple pieces of steak, perfectly grilled, covered with onions and bell peppers.  wifey had a combo plate with a tostada, taco, and burrito which also came with rice and beans.  my plate was definitely the better of the two...but we didn't have a problem cleaning up both plates.

so here's the deal.  if you want to eat here, don't expect to come at peak hours and receive great service.  don't expect to come here on weekends and receive great service. you know what?  just come here with low service expectations and you won't feel the need to whine and complain on yelp.

this place is freakin great.

This place is fantastic!!  We always start with the chicken super nachos, as the meat is marinated for a couple of days prior to serving.  Pair the nachos with a light or dark Super Chevelas....maybe 2!

Finally, top off your stomach with the Super Burrito with the red enchilada sauce on top.  It doesn't get much better.

I love across the street, so I have a pretty good frequency experience with this place. I have ordered 10's of plates from this place and I can say that I hope it will be better each and every time. The food is turn and burn style mexican food. Almost everything is fried.

They throw everything together and stick it in a salamander to finish heating the food (which is why the plate comes out piping hot with with a crunchy outter layer of rice and skin over the beans with lard.)

Their salsa is spicey (good way to encourage customers to buy drinks), which is actually a plus to me because I love spicey salsa. The food is decently priced and the Chavellas are _alright_ - they use margarita mix.

I would eat here if you were considering it for the first time. That way when you go to a good Mexican sit-down, you know what food tastes like when its not thrown together and scalded by extreme temperatures.

Oh yeah, they have a sign that says "Be courteous, people are waiting"- which basically means "hurry up, eat and get the F out"

The Ice Cold Chavelas are awesome and so is the chips & salsa but that's about it.

Service is non-existent in this place.  Just down right terrible service.  Maybe they need a class in Customer Service 101.  It all starts when you sit down.  They don't even ask if they can start you off with something to drink like any other restaurant you dine at in this country.  And don't ask for a drink first becaus they will tell you, "Sorry, You have to order food first".  WTF is that?????

Signs everywhere telling you what you can and can't do!  So dont step on the wrong tile because you may break a rule.

Hands down the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I have such blind faith in the cooks here that I guarantee my friends "it's all good." Chavelas beer is to die for (beware: a little sugary so purists may not like it).

I've ordered the chicken fajitas here about 15 times over the course of three years. Never have they failed to dazzle me...the onions and peppers are perfectly caramelized. The chicken is fire-glazed and always so moist. The re-fried beans and caliber of food has impressed my friends who have seen their share of authentic Mexican restaurants south of the border.

Yes, the wait here can be ridiculous on a weekend evening. I recommend finding the one on Willow Road (same menu/ownership) as it's much larger. NOTE: one credit card per table enforced. I find the service to be attentive and friendly. Recently started splitting up groups into two tables...kind of sucks but understandable.

After committing to a Friday night dinner at Taqueria Tlaquepaque before I read the Yelp reviews, I gave myself butterflies (mostly about the wait time)... Needlessly. My party of two waited for only 10 minutes before we were seated, and we left about an hour later with stomachs full of what I'd consider some of the best Mexican cuisine in the Bay Area!

The Decor: Whenever I think of a stereotypical hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant, I envision a tiny eating area that's crammed with too many tables to be up to fire code. This is not the case with Taqueria Tlaquepaque. There was an entire room for patrons waiting to be seated, and plenty of room to move around the eating area without bumping into my next door neighbor's chair. In addition, they had a bunch of Dia de Los Muertos-esque colored paper garlands hanging on the walls... Which is maybe a little morbid when you think about it, but still, they're nice to look at.

The food: Our chips arrived warm from the oven, and the accompanying salsa was very spicy (which I absolutely loved, but if you're sensitive about spice, I'd avoid it). I ordered the combination plate with two cheesy, flavorful cheese enchiladas and a pretty standard taquito. My boyfriend ordered beef chimichangas, which were also delicious, and made with very good-quality meat - something I'm a stickler for when it comes to Mexican food.

The Drinks: Their sangria wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was still pretty delicious, and a bargain at $2.50 a glass!

The service: No one was particularly friendly, but no one was rude to us, either. They got the job done quickly and without forgetting anything.

Why they got four stars: They could definitely be a bit friendlier to their customers, and we weren't offered a refill on our chips, salsa, or drinks (alcoholic or otherwise). However, my overall experience with Taqueria Tlaquepaque was very positive, and I'm already looking forward to bringing more friends and family here in the near future!

I'm not really a big fan of Mexican food, so when I have to eat it I want it to be good. This place is ok... I ordered 2 crispy tacos, I asked them to put some sour cream on it, the guy kept arguing with me saying it doesn't come that way. I said, I know, can you just put some on and then charge me for a side of sour cream... He agreed to that and when I actually get my tacos, I don't have any sour cream. So it was kind of upseting. I didn't enjoy it, and hope I never have to come back here again.

Bomb Mexican joint that now has three locations in Willow Glen. Definitely more of a full service restaurant than a taqueria. Most well known for their Super Chavelas - a beer, tequila, lime and salt concoction.

I also really enjoy their Flautas, Enchiladas Suizas and Super Burritos. Their refried beans are also better than most. They have a great homemade taste.

Tlaque is pretty small, so you will have a wait on primetime evenings, but it is worth it. Easily a top five Mexican restaurant in the South Bay.

The service is terrible!  The food is A-Ok.  Everytime my husband suggests going here for a quick bite ... I always shun him.  The food is totally greasy and slapped together quickly and sloppy.  The margaritas are ehhh ... but the service is what gets me.  The servers are rude, the host staff keep you waiting for days to get seated and once you do sit down it's a good 10 minutes before anyone notices you.  I have tried the food 'to-go' and it looks like slop in a box.

Ok, this is a bit of an odd review because I have had two different experiences here.  I'm choosing to be more generous with my stars than not.  The first experience was not so great.  I walked in and was basically ignored because it was a super busy night and I think they had one waitress working the entire floor.  The second time was great because the same waitress who ignored me the first time was super nice to me the second time, we got seated immediately and she was quick and polite and our food came fast.

The moral here is Don't go on a Friday night.  Go on a Sunday night and you'll have a much better experience.  As for the food, it was pretty good.  Very generous portions.  Extremely generous and damned good prices.  I don't know if I can call this one of my favorites, but it's growing on me.

When I ate there recently, I was in the throws of a no wheat, no dairy, no sugar diet (after living in California for over a decade, I figure it's my turn to be difficult, right?); the house special was perfect...the meat, tender, the veggies still crisp - and the tortillas were excellent.

I also enjoyed the atmosphere - funky and homey, if not a bit run down in feel...it was a perfect mix of taquaria's and 'Mexican Resturants' that cursed my teens in the mid-west.

I do have to ding them for service...I asked for a napkin, I got salsa (which was good, yes), I asked for more water, I got more napkins...she just wasn't paying attention.

I'm still going back.  Maybe next time I'll be eating cheese.

Sure the outside of this place makes you seriously think twice, three, four times about what might be waiting for you inside. Thin blinds always drawn, tiny ass parking lot, rickety building. SKETCHY.

But once you enter into the cool interior...you feel like you are transported to a restaurant in Mexico. A good one. Yes, the wait can be long. Yes, they have a lot of rules such as...no parties larger than 6. No more than one credit card per table. No seating you before all your party is there. No exceptions. And I bet they enforce it. It actually says a lot that a place with so many rules is that packed...because the food must be that good.

Yes...yes it is. I am a picky bitch when it comes to my Mexican food...being raised on Grandma's rice and beans from birth kinda does that to a brown girl. Tlaque has both the down-home enchiladas, tamales, and tacos that I am used to at my favorite family-owned local Mexican joints.

They also have dishes that are more elegant than traditional. My husband got an amazing simmered thinly cut steak dish that came swimming in a spicy thin brown sauce, with peppers, onions and avocado. I continuously snitched mouth-burning eye-watering bites from my hub's plate.

LOVE that you can order a glass of sangria and it's a small wine glass for $2.50. Perfect if you just want a taste, a nice refreshing change from the $10 super margaritas we get elsewhere. Of course, the chavelas deserve a mention as well. My hub kept saying he felt like we were in Mexico and to me that's high praise for a restaurant in the middle of a ranch-style run-down SJ strip mall.

It is ironic that as you stand in the middle of this typical-looking Mexican place, all you pretty much see are khaki-shorted WG families with their kids in strollers. I swear I was the only brown person in the entire place., nevermind only couple without a child. But whatever, I don't discriminate when it comes to bomb-ass Mexi food.

Great food, fab service, we are bummed we waited so long to check this place out BUT very excited that it's so close to our house we can walk over anytime. Takeout!

It's too bad that they can't get a handle on the service because their food is the best mexican food I've ever had. But whats up with the micro baskets of chips? Maybe the service would be better if the servers weren't constantly refilling chip baskets.

The food at any of the Tlaquepaque restaurants is amazing. The drinks (Chavelas) are great too and make it a fun place to go.

However, if you're in the mood for a nice quiet dining experience - pass on this place. Seems like the majority of customers here are just the rowdy partying crowd. The place is always packed and it makes for some pretty bad service.

Once we went and weren't acknowledged for 25 minutes (yet were watched and looked at by several staff members). I finally asked a waitress if they were opened and she said no, they were closed. Luckily, another server saw me shaking my head and walking out, cause he stopped me and told me they were opened! I guess they get so busy they don't want the business...

This was my first time and it was better than i thought it would be. My friend Mikey and me order a la carte items forgoing the beans and rice filler.  Mikey ordered flautas and a side carne asada taco, i ordered a carnitas torta and a side al pastor taco. We came to the conclusion that we are def. coming back. Next time i'm gonna have to try the Chevela.

Tlaquepaque has been a staple for me and my friends for a number of years now.  Another one of those restaurants that don't look great from the outside, but the decor inside is actually very nice.  It definitely goes hand in hand with the pricing of the food, which is very inexpensive.
The Chavela's are amazing, they almost taste like iced tea so be careful because you can drink a lot of them without feeling it until later.  I like the fresh salsa, only it can range from being spicy one day and not at all another.  I only eat one thing when I come here, because every time I think of ordering something I start craving for my regular... the Enchilada Suizas.  It comes with 2 enchiladas (your choice of filling: Chicken, beef, or cheese), rice, beans, and salad.
It's a great place for bigger parties and very affordable.  Give it a shot!

BAD SERVICE!

Food= 3 stars
Service= Not even half a star!!!! LOL

The only two things I liked about this place

1. Salsa
2. Super Tacos (when they were fuller!)

If it weren't because my husband continues to want to go here because of the chavela's, I would never ever go back again!!! ALL the Tlaquepaque locations have the worst Service I've ever experienced in a restaurant! After reading some of the bad reviews, I couldn't agree more. Wait is long to sit you, once seated they rush you out of there! Several times, they brought us the bill WITHOUT asking if we needed anything else! They rather waste time fixing the bill than to ask! Not to mention, the times we have gotten there an HOUR before closing, they will start cleaning infront of you to rush you out of there! They don't pay attention to you! If your lucky the servers will come around once after you placed your order! They lack customer service skills! It's so bad, you have to remind them to give you a straw when they bring you a drink!!! Isn't that part of common sense? Anyway all the times I have been there, all I have observed is rudeness!!! To top it off, lately they have made a reduction in the portions they serve, but not on the price!!! Not worth it! In this place you don't even get what you pay for because what you get is worth less!!! I think the word is starting to get around because we were there 10/3/09 & although it was a Saturday, there weren't many people! I WONDER WHY??? I don't blame it on the economy on this one! I blame it on the HORRIBLE SERVICE! Although I think the servers don't deserve a penny in this place, most of the time, I always leave a minimum 15% tip!!! Just because I might come back!

I really wish I would have ordered one of the yummy looking plates at this place! I ended up with a burrito supreme, sour cream instead of avocado inside. It was good- just boring. The chicken was cooked well but pretty plain. It could have used some more salsa inside, I really think that would have done the trick.

Oh PS. the salsa is SO spicy! Make sure the waiter brings your water before you dig in!

The place was surprisingly packed, too. I was fascinated to see the crowd was all young twenty somethings, with the exception of a handful of older patrons. Everyone was dressed to impress too. Who would have thought this was a pre-club dinner spot?

I really want to go back and try something else. I was totally jealous of all the delicious looking plates being served around me as I munched on my bland burrito.... Can't complain too much though, the check was $26 for three people!!! And that includes one of those beer/tequilla concoctions!

I love the chips/salsa and chavelas here! Too bad this is not a restaurant geared toward a relaxing meal. Get in, get out, and shut up.

The food isn't bad but the parking and service is horrible.

I refuse to come here or to either of the other 2 locations. I'd rather gag down some Puerto Azul where you can at least have a good time with your friends and fill your tummy at the same time.

In my perfect world I would marry the chavelas, chips/salsa, and food of Tlaq with the good attitude and service of Puerto Azul. That would be the perfect Mexican restaurant.

Took me big bro here last Sunday after a fun day a the pick n pull (hmmm)..
I had to warn him about the service, nonetheless, but more over advise him that the quality of the food surpasses the "No Soup For You!!" service. And once again, just like the one on Willow, this first exponential dining establishment follows through....mmmmmmmmmmmm.....chavelas......

For any of you who don't give this place 5 stars, it's because you don't know good Mexican food.  Yes, the service is spotty, the parking is difficult (but come on, park on the street and walk a few steps - it won't kill you!) and sometimes it's difficult to get your bill, but the food......

I consider myself a Mexican food connoisseur.  I have literally tried hundreds of Mexican eateries, sampling dishes out of roach coaches, fine dining establishments and the back of grocery stores. Taqueria Tlaqupaque is THE BEST.  It never fails.  You have never had Mexican food this good.  It will change your life.

Stop reading now and eat here.  It is that good.

I've eaten at this location once and the service was HORRIBLE.

First my husband & I had to wait forever to be seated. Then when we finally were seated the waitress didnt come and ask us what we wanted to drink or even acknowledge us until I flagged her down to come to our table. After our food came out that was pretty much the last time we saw her and we had to keep flagging her down if we needed anything. She was super bitchy and seemed annoyed at us from the beginning for no reason.

I will never go back to this one ever again. The food was good but the horrible service and shitty parking out weigh it and its not even worth it. Tlaquepaque #3 is so much better!

Happy Archie.

They are a bit testy at this location so beware.

Remind me to tell you about the time I started the night here on a beach cruiser and ended up Los Gatos.
