The super chevalas ROCK!!!
My favorite food is the ceviche tostada pulpo and the tiny tacos (carnitas)
Service was good and this location is a lot roomier than #1. There was no wait to get a table.
#2 is #1 in my book. We typically dine at this location because the service is so much friendlier than it is at #1, and it's also a lot bigger.
Tlaquepaque has the best street tacos, and at $1.70, you can get full for under $10. The carnitas and carne asada are my favorite. When I'm feeling very hungry, I'll have a carnitas or chile verde burrito for $5.25, and that'll last me two meals. Oh, and the free chips and hot salsa are awesome! You can buy a tub of their salsa for $6 - it's always a huge hit at parties.
If you love a cerveza with tequila, get the Super Chavelas. I prefer their frozen margaritas, and the horchatas are yummy - it's huge.
The only reason why I give them four stars instead of five is because they claim to be the "Master of Mexican Munchies." I get my Mexican munchies after 11pm. They close at 8pm!
Cheap good eats, that is now my calling.
With a motto of "Master of Mexican Munchies" . . COME ON, that is so cool. I want to be called that.
Good grub, good love.
Ordered steak and carnitas tacos. Not a fan of the chevelas; as many of you know, I only drink Grey Goose.
I ate two tacos but I could have eaten four. Yes, they were THAT good.
Service was good for us, we waved and they came. Not too hard.
Definitely will return.
this has now become my to go place with my girl. we never wait long because its just the 2 of us and we both love to knock back their super chevalas. its not a fancy place, the waiters could care less, but this is our spot!!! we make it happen!!!

Portion size was rather small for a Mexican restaurant. Food and plate was not HOT like you would expect. They sold their sodas in cans. The Chevalas tasted like beer and lime juice, they were lame. Nothing to brag about. I'd so rather eat at Cabrito's.
Top Ten Reasons why you should eat at Tlaquepaque #1, 2, and 3:
10. You find it amusing to read all the rules written on their menu, table top, and on the door, and think it's funny that there are more rules than there are menu items.
9. You like menus thrown at your table that are covered in old salsa, dried food, and hair which begs to question: if they are not paying attention to the small details of cleanliness, what are they doing behind the scenes in the kitchen?
8. You don't mind being ignored from the minute you walk in the door.
7. You don't mind being ignored once you're sat at the table.
6. You don't need water or other beverages to accompany your meal.
5. You want to try out your high school Spanish as the servers do not speak English (or pretend to not understand English).
4. You're OK with eating food that you didn't order because your server didn't get the order right and when you try and explain this, she says, "that 's what you ordered I won't fix it!"
3. You enjoy seeing the wait-staff stand in a corner staring blankly at you as you jump up and down to get their attention.
2. You like that they play music at 100 decibels even though you realize that they are trying to make you uncomfortable so you will not stay long and enjoy your meal.
...and the number 1 reason why you should eat at Tlaquepaque (Drumroll)...
1. You think it's cool that owner Waldo Navarro has decided to run a business where he believes he can afford to lose customers because he can rest on his laurels (or chavelas) and offer poor service, mediocre food, and an unsanitary environment! (Cymbals)
PROS:
Chevelas! (Big Beers with lemon and a salted rim)..Good food, Best salsa ever! The environment is really fun with big comfy chairs reminds me of being on the beaches of Mexico.
CONS:
Parking is terrible, my suggestion would be to park backwards so when exiting, its easier to leave....and hold your pee because the bathroom is disgusting!
FINAL ANSWER: GO!! Just don't GO to the BATHROOM!!!!
On the recommendation of a couple friends, my fiance and I headed here for dinner. The small parking lot was full, so we easily found parking a little ways down the street. Once we were inside, it was a little confusing as to whether or not we were supposed to seat ourselves but soon someone arrived and we were seated at a table. Think sit-down taqueria, with waiters.
Once we were seated, our chavelas (light for me, dark for him) came out REALLY fast. Soon, our tacos came out and were pretty tasty! I got one carnitas and one al pastor and both were yummy! I gotta say though, the carnitas one definitely stole the show! The flavors were amazing. My guy really liked the carne asada.
One thing that's a little different than your usual meat and onions tacos here is they add rice and beans (if you want), which adds a lot of volume. I was stuffed after about one and a half tacos and my guy ended up taking two of his four home with us.
We will definitely be back! This is a solid taco (and chavelas) spot right in the heart of Willow Glen.
My nickname for this restaurant is the "Mexican Food Nazi's"-kinda like the soup Nazi on Seinfeld.
I think the food is great. The service isn't very good....but that goes along with the whole theme of the restaurant I think. Maybe they just know their food is that good that people will still come back?!
My favorites:
super chicken/carne asada taco's : $3.50
Chavelas :$5.50
chicken fajitas : approx. $9.00
Salsa is usually super spicy and good too! :)
The only thing is that you have to order 'enough food' per chavela. I think they actually cut you off at 2 now. If i want to chavela's I have to order at least 2 tacos, or else they wont give me another one.
They don't really split checks...especially with large parties. So BRING CASH. Also you absolutely cannot even sit down without your entire party being there....it's weird like that....but I crave it all of the time!
This is my favorite location out of all three..
3.5 stars...
Decent place for some Mexican eats, quick service, average prices. I had the soft tacos Al Pastor and the pork was delish. Super marinated and tender. The quesadilla we ordered was below average, the cheese was too salty and they were shady on the meat. The guacamole that came with it was really bland. Not my favorite dish so far. The fiance is a major fan of the combination place and he says it's the best thing to get there as well as the Chavela. Whatever you order, don't forget to order a cup of their Horchata, nice way to top off the meal. You also get free chips and salsa, yum! The salsa is fresh and you can see all the peppers in there, it's hot!
I've been here a few times, the first time it was OK the service was horrible it took about 20 min just to get the water refilled and the wait was long.
The second time it was less busy and I ordered a chavela and it completed my meal. Seriously the chavelas make this place, without them I probably wouldn't come.
The small carne asada tacos are bomb. The salsa they serve you in the beginning is SPICY but good. The chile relleno is pretty good, my boyfriend likes the chorizo tacos and enchiladas. The rice and beans are sooo good, it's weird because they are only rice and beans but they are the best I've had.
They are STRICT on the rules and some of them are pretty ridiculous. They seriously need to loosen up!
The service is usually crap. Tonight our waiter was good but the other times we've came its been SLOW. And it takes forever for someone to come to the front and seat you even when its not busy.
My boyfriend took me here (my first time!) this past Saturday. I'm SOOO glad he did!!
He ordered a Super Chavelas and the Sopas. I sampled both, and DAMN! Delicioso!!
I ordered a Sangria and the Enchiladas Verde (#24). I was in culinary heaven. My boyfriend asked if I was going to come up for air (haha)!
The chips and salsa were hella good too--the chips were warm, thick, and crunchy. The salsa had a well-rounded flavor, and a tolerable spice for my gringa palate.
I have a pretty picky palate, and I really enjoyed the meal here! Large sides of sour cream and avocado (which were fresh and yummy!) And the rice and beans were great too. Our service was good (not exactly warm, but efficient).
I went back today to get the Enchiladas Suiza, and I'm so happy I did! Happy tummy time for me =0)
I'll wait for the weekend to indulge my Super Chavelas craving. ;o)
Bad service, mediocre food
Had to ask three times for a menu. After I was done, forever to get the check, after I paid, another forever to get my change. Not terribly busy.
So how about the food? Tamale & enchilada plate was as bland as the day is long. A completely tasteless and rubbery enchilada, a decent tamale (though absent any hint of spicing) all covered in what tasted distinctly of undiluted Campbell's tomato soup and enough cheese to choke a goat.
No thanks.
(this business seems to have duplicate Yelp entires)
food taste = 4
price / value = 3.5
service = 4
environment = 3.5
am i being too nice with my ratings? maybe. but i've eaten here twice and i've been impressed every time. very healthy portions and their salsa is delicious. i've tasted their chorizo and pollo tacos and carne asada burrito. everything tastes good and the servers are on the ball. if you order a soft drink, you will get a 12oz can with a glass of ice. i thought that would upset some people, but most people found it better than the price gouging some other places do.
great place to eat, and although it isn't very cheap, i'll probably find a way to come here again. very high three.
what the heck are those drinks called??! i always forget. it's the one with the huge glass of beer with shots thrown in. dark, not light. guess i always drink too much, or maybe i'm just lightweight cuz i can only drink ONE glass. i believe the rumor is that you are only allowed 3 glasses and that you must order food with it. not sure how true that is. maybe one day, i'll find out. i need to first build my tolerance.
oh. and the food is DELISH! :) the price isn't bad either!
This place is my favorite!!! I'm Italian by blood but Mexican by choice of flavor and appetite!! There are 3 of these place in the small district of Willow Glen and there is a reason for that...... THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC!! I love the chips and salsa!! It's spice so bring a fire extinguisher! The tacos are cheap but the best and it make me want to sing in a mariachi band when I'm finished!! The meats are cooked perfectly (carnitas, carne asada, al pastor, and pollo) AYAYayayayay....
Food is good. I would recommend the beef chimichangas and the Chevelas.....
light super chavelllaaaaaaaa
the meat here kind of sucks. they know you're coming from the chavela, so they let the quality of the food and service fall by the wayside.
who cares? super chavellaa
I've been here three times. I think that constitutes a review?
My boss, and 3 of my friends highly recommended this place. All three times, I wasn't disappointed with the food, because yes it is tasty. As for the chavelas...YUM! Mind you, I am NOT a beer drinker; if you know me at , you know that I don't drink beer. The chavelas are excellent...almost magical. I guess I'm not one to have an opinion since I don't know beer, but with the food and chips, it's definitely a nice complement.
As for the service, it could be better. Yes, it is crowded and loud. What did you expect? A quiet evening in a popular restaurant where large families tend to go? As for parking, were you expecting valet service? It's a fun place to hang out with your buddies and throw back a few. ;)
Basic Mexican food. Basic decor. Very basic service. Only saving grace is the Chevalas(Beer with lemon)
The number #1 rule of Mexican food dining is, there are rules:
1. Your party must all be present for you to be seated
2. We cannot accommodate parties larger than 15 (guess there goes all those giant Mexican family reunions I would have liked to have planned for here, crazy cousins and aunts and all)
3. We do not divide tabs, only one credit card will be accepted (shit, there goes any means of avoiding getting screwed over with the remainder of the tab)
4. You must order food in order to order a Super Chavela (no sign for this one, but the waiter insisted as he had a party take up tables for hours with no food. No, people, this is not cool at Tlaquepaque.
5. No more than two Super Chavelas per person (a good rule, otherwise they'd be in close partnership with 911 and stretcher service)
6. Bar closes at 9pm sharp. No exceptions
So what, you ask me, makes this place so damn wonderful?
The food. Top sirloin smoothered in enchilada sauce with fresh avocado on top? Fried breaded steak with potatoes, beans and rice? Combinations platters that make you regret ever thinking that most restaurants in California think they know what Mexican food is? Deliciously crispy chips and perfectly hot salsa? (screw the water girl! that's what Chavelas are for!)
Oh and the Chavelas. Corona or Negra Modelo with lime juice and tequila, salted rim. Unheard of amazement. I will figure out how to make these at home. Anyone up for being my test guinea pig, let me know.
It is called the solution to the Mexican munchies for a reason. I'd need a hand trunk to get out the door if I ever came here high. It makes you forgive the spotchy service and rude rules. Oh and the fact that they start putting up tables and closing down while you're eating. It's a swift running engine that is unforgiving, unpretentious, and unfound in Nor. Cal. Granted, if you can speak some iota of Spanish, understand it or come with a friend from El Salvador - you're golden.
Besides the name for this restaurant sounds so cool on the tongue, it makes me want to go buy a llama and name him after it. "Tah-lah-k-pah-k!!!!"
Youre no good, youre no good, baby youre no good, food is Not authentic, and service is bad times. If you want rules for all that you do knock yourself out, but it's Not worth it!
My wife and I ate here last night based on the recommendation from a couple people, but it was extremely disappointing. The service was unfriendly and the food was flavorless. Can you say dog food!
I had a combination of cheeze enchilada, beef taco and chicken burrito. They were all the bland. My wife ordered a different combo that was equally as flavorless, except for the tamale which was actually fairly tasty.
We will never return and I don't recommend this to anyone who appreciates flavorful mexican food.
Came here Friday night with 6 friends for our monthly Book Club meeting. Here are a few pros and cons of the place:
Cons:
-parking is very limited in the lot and is minimal on the street due to it being mostly residential parking only. I parked near the mortuary *shivers*.
-chairs are big and bulky and I kept knocking my neighbor next table over (Opps sorry!)
-We asked twice (and almost three times) for a to-go box for my friend
-it's loud in here!
-they won't seat your whole party until everyone is there
-Bathrooms are disgusting.
Pros:
-Food is awesome here!!
-chips and salsa are delicious!
-ordering was fast and we got our food really quickly
-Super Chevelas!
I do agree with most of the Yelpers reviewing this place that the service is not as attentive as we would like but it didn't seem to bother me that night because we were just hanging out having a good time and were there until 10pm when they closed.
I probably would have given this place 3 stars but I really really enjoyed my food! I ordered the Bisteca Mexicana and it was really delicious! I loved it! I'm not a fan of rice but the beans were okay. The main dish though was better then expected so I give this place 4 stars because it's a place I want to tell others to come to now!
I already did a review of Tlaquepaque No. 1, but decided to review TLQ No.2 as well. This location opened about a year or two ago, most likely to take overflow from their Lincoln Ave location. Like the other one, this restaurant has great food at low prices and lots of it!
Here are a few of my observations:
(a) it can be hard to park here (just like at No. 1)
(b) you may have to wait a long time for a table (just like at No. 1)
(c) you may or may not get decent service (just like at No. 1)
(d) the seating is not all that comfortable and the layout of the restaurant is kinda funky
Normally, this many negatives would lower my rating quite a bit, but in this case, I kept it at 4 stars because:
(a) the food and drinks are amazing
(b) you can mitigate the wait and parking
TIP #1: If you don't want a long wait, go eat here at an "off" time. We usually go between 1-3PM on a Saturday or Sunday or between 8-9PM Mon-Thur. Friday nights are super packed. If you go at the times above, you will usually be seated right away with no wait or a minimal wait.
TIP #2: Do not, I say, DO NOT eat the salsa before the water comes. It is hot and the water is necessary. They sometimes bring it fast and other times not so fast. I have made this mistake too many times to count!! :)
TIP #3: The specialities are seafood and chavelas. Here are my favorite items to order at TLQ... Shrimp fajitas, Cameron a la Diabla (fiery!), Camerones Empanisadas (breaded shrimp), Garlic Shrimp (lots of garlic and butter). I also like the conventional fare, such as beef enchiladas with red sauce and chicken enchiladas suisa. Try the Milanesas - really good!!
TIP #4: Try the breakfast dishes. They serve breakfast until 3PM, even though it is not on the menu. They have a separate menu for breakfast - ask for it. I LOVE the Huevos a la Mexicana. Scrambled eggs with freshly chopped jalapenos, onions and tomato, YUM! The Chilachiles are good too. They serve the breakfast plates with beans and these awesome freshly chopped fried potatoes. You can order these as a side dish if you don't order breakfast. They have breakfast burritos as well.
OK, I can't finish my review without mentioning a few negatives too. The service could use a little help. It trickles down from the management of the owners. Sometimes, they will not make changes to their menu items. I have never experienced a restaurant that would say flat out "No" when you ask them to do something simple. For instance, my hubby likes a bean, rice and cheese burrito. They have a bean and cheese burrito on the menu, but some days they will not add rice to it - even when we offered to pay extra for the rice. They WILL bring you out a side of rice, though. It is truly strange... I wish the owners would understand how badly this reflects on the service at their restaurant. The service at this locations tends to be slower than at No.1 too.
Overall, I think you will not be disappointed in Talaquepaque. The tremendous food makes up for any of the little nuisances.
Have you ever seen the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld? You know, where the staff treats the customers like rented mules, but the customers just accept it because there is no other way to obtain the treasured soup on the other side of the counter. I'm reminded of that every time I come here. Mario G., I know where you're coming from man!!!!
My problem is the straight from heaven (or would that be hell?) Camarones a la Diabla!! As pissed off as I get just about every time I come here, and as many times as I've wanted to say, "F it, I'm out!', the camarones won't let me.
For starters let me say this, THEY'RE HOT!!!!! I'm not speaking figuratively here either. If you're not a fan of spicy food, or even moderately spicy food, you're going to be VERY uncomfortable with this dish. BUT, if you can eat fire and love every minute of it, you have to try this!!!! Also, let me add that they are not just spicy for spicy's sake. They are every bit as DELICIOUS as they are hot!!!! Once I find something that I really like at any establishment, I have a bad habit of only getting that every time I go back. This isn't alien to that philosophy, and every time I've gone back, it was just as good as the last.
So despite the service that leaves so much room for suggestions, I can't help myself. I guess I have just accepted the fact that I have to sacrifice one thing for another.
The perfect storm, I know she's out there!
Had dinner here with my ladies on Fri. night. The place was packed!
Lucky for us, one of our friends got here a little early, and had their name put on the list. Unfortunately, they won't seat you until your entire party has arrived. We still ended up with a table in about 5 minutes.
It took the server a bit to get to us, but not a big deal. The food came so fast, I was pretty shocked, especially given how busy they were.
As for the food, it's good, not the best I've had, but I'd return if someone else wanted to.
As some other reviewers mentioned, the chips are awesome! Some of the best I've had.
I had enchiladas verdes,it was the first time I had this dish, so I don't have much to compare it to. It was tasty, but I would have liked something with a little more chicken in it. That's just me though, always craving protein!
We were there almost until closing, and we never felt rushed, (even though we had been done eating and drinking for quite awhile.)
Thanks for letting us hang around chatting as long as we did!
My biggest complaint about this place: the bathroom!!!! Seriously gross!
I've been in bar bathrooms that were cleaner.
My advice to you; empty out before coming, and hold it until you leave! Although, this is easier said than done if you've been drinking!
Oh Chavela...it has been WAY too long--forgive us!
Swung by to Tlaquepaque last night after I got a pedi and the bf got his hair cut. Why did we wait this long to come back?! (Ok, so it's only been a few months..)
I got the side order flautas (1 beef, 1 chicken) and he got the chili rellenos platter. DELISH!!!!! Tasty as always.
However, I wanted to update this review to say that the service last night was AWESOME! Best that I've ever gotten for this restaurant. We were promptly seated, orders taken in an appropriate time, Chavelas delivered within minutes, and food brought over pipin' hot. Definitely upgrade .5 a star for that!
Oh Tlaquepaque, you got us again :)

This was one of the first mexican restaurants I was introduced to when I moved out here a few years ago..and has been a favorite of mine since. Both #1 and #2 locations are close to each other that if #1 is busy, we would go to #2 instead. However, they won't seat you until everyone in your party is present.
The food here is very authentic...and every dish I've tried have been delicious. Not only is it a favorite of mine, it's a favorite of my out-of-town guests as well. This is one place they always want to come back to when they come visit. I'm not a drinker but all my friends rave about the chavelas and magaritas here!
Well, they fixed the chairs at least - a little upholstery goes a little way.
Food's the same. It comes out fast and is just what you'd expect from the menu: not bad.
Some things Tpaque has going for it - large, festive groups, very laid back, and you can sit there are long as you want.

First, order a chavelas, preferably the dark one. I'm awarding 1 star just for that.

I had to check this place out since everyone always talks about it...and I was also craving a HUGE chavela and ceviche.
So we got there pretty early on a Friday, thankfully, cause they got real busy real fast! We were seated immediately and got some of those tasty chips and just right spicy salsa! Mmmm...and the chips were warm, too!
So, I ordered the ceviche tosadas and chavela that I had been craving and my bf got the tampiquena and horchata. The chavela was delicious and HUGE, like expected. The ceviche was totally tasteless...the shrimp had no flavor and tasted like they were frozen - yuck! The salsa with the ceviche was also lacking...not enough lime and umph. My bf tampiquena was really good...it didn't look especially appetizing, but the taste was great! His horchata was also very tasty.
So, three stars because the ceviche was so very disappointing and is not something that it easy to mess up. Also, minus another star because the service dropped once we got our food, and like others have said service can make or break a meal. So once the waitress dropped off our food she was never to be found again...she was so slow to pick up plates, bring more drinks, the check...very slow...it was a buzz kill.
But I would go back again and try them on a less busy night and order something else.
My sister and her coworkers love this place, always go for lunch on the weekdays. My sister especially loves the camarones de la diabla (spicy seafood soup) and the chavelas.
I came by here with a friend on a friday afternoon. Made sure to stop by earlier since they get slammed at lunchtime (esp noon). The service is alright. Nice guy, but the place started to fill up, he started to forget about us. Food was absolutely delicious though. Fresh chips and salsa alone made up for the service. We split al pastro quesadilla and I got carne asada and al pastor tacos, all of which were super delicious.
So first of all I have to say that the last time I was here I believe it was under different management and it was called SANGRIA. It was great!! HOWEVER....this new experience NOT GREAT!!!
1) There is like a whole 10 parking spaces in there lot and the rest of the people can only park on Willow St or on the street next to the restaurant which is a residental area.
2) They took FOREVER to seat us....we had 6 adults and a baby....may I add they had a section where there was room for us just hanging out without people sitting in it...(they sat us there an hour later)
3) Once they were ready for us they made us stand together for another 15 minutes there goes 1 hour and 15 min wait....really annoying.
4) Once they sat us down they brought us chips and salsa right away...but no water..i'm sorry but even in MEXICO they bring you water to sip on while to wait.
5) Ummm it took another 15 min for our waitress to come and by this time we already knew what we wanted because they took so damn long. And all she says (in spanish) What can I get you? She was unpleasant!!
6) They did bring us our food pretty quicky....but it wasn't all that great!! I think the best thing was the refried beans. I ordered Enchiladas de Pollo (Chkn Enchiladas) the taste was bland like they had just poured tomatoe sause over a tortilla with boiled chicken...ewww...where is the flavor????
7) My husband ordered Sopes....they are suppose to be these crunchy tortilla type bowl with meat and lettuce and what not....they were soggy as heck...so gross. And they hardly had any meat.
Unless they change there cook and train there wait staff with Customer Service skills I don't think I will ever go here again or tell people to go here for that matter.
I did see the drinks and they looked good. But what is the deal with not being able to get a drink unless you buy a plate of food....what about an appetizer?? Too many rules!!
Authentic...I think not...you get better service at Chevy's! Not even in Mexico do they treat you like that...and i've been to Tlaquepaque, MX!
Sorry but the truth is the truth!
This place is the shizznizole-shi-bam!! If you go here you must order a dinner plate and not a burrito. The burritos are average; but the dinner plates are always delicious. If you go here during dinner hours and weekends or after church on Sunday be prepared to wait an hour or so.
Long, long wait.
Chevela- refreshing.
Chips and salsa- good
I had a taco platter- fine.
Seems like a really popular place for birthdays and groups.
Noisy. Dirty. Lacking charm.
Seems like a lot of work to eat some Mexican food.
Once of my fave spots to go. I hit it up at least once a month, maybe two. But only to build up my thirst for a chavela. It's not the same anymore since they started to use Tecate instead of Modelo. They need to bring back Modelo. You bring back Modelo, you get Five Stars.
The food is great btw, I usually get some Super Tacos or a full plate for dinner. Always leave satisfied. The rules are pretty weird, but whatever. I look at it like the Chavela Nazi. No Chavela for you!
Holyyyyyy!!! Their chavelas are huge and wonderful!!!!
They also serve exceptional Mexican food during lunch time. Their scrambled eggs are nice and fluffy. Just the way I like em.
Oh, and their chips are extremmmmely addicting.
My second most favorite mexican restaurant... that is because my #1 is La Palapa in Puerto Vallarta. Tlaquepaque has the best SUPER CHAVELAS (limit 2 per visit). Yes, you'll end up having to wait long for a table during peak hours but that is only because the food is so good and worth the wait.
My favorites:
-Super chavelas
-Carnitas burrito with spicy salsa sauce
My Ratings:
Quality of Food - 4 Stars
Quantity of Food - 4 Stars
Price - 4 Stars
Location - 2 Stars
Parking - 2 Stars
Service - 3 Stars
Speed - 3 Stars
My Opinion/Story:I love this Mexican Restaurant. Hard to say their name and parking is just aweful... but despite all their issues.. we still keep coming back for more. The price vs. plate portions is really good. I eat alot but I always end up with leftovers. Service is ok. Parking is terrible. I always end up parking across the street or a block or two behind the place. The wait can also be terrible depending on how many you have. No reservations allowed so you end up waiting for hours. But the food is really good. I definitely will keep coming back for more. Maybe I'll try other locations.
