What can I say? I have been coming here to eat for the last five or six years, and I keep coming back at least once a week! I will agree that the "ambiance" may not be the greatest, but you can always pay more for that elsewhere. I usually get mine to go, and if there is no line, it's usually ready in about ten minutes  If there is a line, it's still worth the wait.
What you get here is great, filling and inexpensive food. The staff is friendly, and they work hard to keep it a going concern. A 2-chile relleno plate with rice, beans and shredded lettuce with tomato salad goes for a little over six bucks, and I, who can usually pack it away, have often had enough for an extra meal the next day.
While the mall location on Bellam in San Rafael may be a little on the drab side, it IS well located, and is right at the intersection of 580 and 101 in San Rafael. A few minutes off of either highway, and you're there.
Inexpensive AND good is always a great combination in my book, and that is what you get here.
Jim Bob says "Check it out."

You can get a Tostada here for 3.67 including tax.  It will taste good and fill you up especially if you get a big bag of chips (bags available right in front of the register).  I work right near here and get this at least once a week if not more.  Best deal in this part of town.

Burrito is also decent and if you get the biggest one for like 7 bucks I think with tax you can have two acceptably sized lunches.

Not the best Mexican in the world but decent.

I would give it five stars but I am not taking two stars off of every place I know that uses Styrofoam.  As soon as this changes this review becomes a 4 star review.

I work across the street from a taco shop and refuse to eat there any longer after finding Mi Familia.  Coming from the East Bay where you can find really tasty budget conscious food, this place is such a relief on the wallet.  Come ready to get filled up though as the portions are large.  I always say judge a place by whether the locals eat there and if this is any indication, you've stepped across the boarder.  Had to ding them though for the decor and facilities.  Other than that, its A-OK!

My dining mate and I both grabbed shrimp burritos here the other day.  Not sure what was wrong, but we both got seriously ill about 10-12 hours later.  And we didn't eat anything in between, and I hadn't eaten earlier in the day, so I'm thinking the burritos were the poison on this one.  The atmosphere is not very good, but the staff were friendly and I liked the woman at the counter.  So two stars for the staff cause given the experience I can't go higher.

I've never had a bad experience here.  Every dish I've tried has been very satisfactory, the prices can't be beat and service is quick and friendly from a staff that works their tails off.  The same can be said for their other location, near the San Anselmo Hub.  Free parking, too!

Super burrito with marinated chicken was great.  Loaded with everything you want in a burrito.  Not too expensive either.  The only draw back for the place is its quite location in a small shopping center.  Otherwise the place has plenty of parking

This branch is much busier and taster than the one on Red Hill Ave. I like to come here when I pay a visit to Ross for home supplies. They have really great cast iron pans and grills. The service is really fast and the salsa bar is always freshly restocked.

I always get the steak fajitas which is very cheap and crispy smoky. I recommend eating at the restaurant because that is where all the actions is. There are always lots of kids and families enjoying their food and laughter.

Our favorite taqueria with quick service and lots to offer.  It's a Mexican Panda Express.  This place is always busy that it doesn't even have a "to go" menu...you order right off their billboard.  Right when you walk in, the vibe is festive with music playing, and people scarfing down their food with smiles.   Food gets cold quickly & not served very hot (note the missing star).  Their nachos are supersize and a meal in itself, not an appetizer/starter.  Burritos can be ordered wet style.  I prefer camarone tacos/burritos anyday.  Feed the whole family on cheap food.  Free drink refills and chips & salsa...just help yourself.

Taqueria Mi Familia serves average Mexican food. Anywhere else in the Bay Area this place would go unnoticed, but in Marin--home of some of the worst Mexican food in California--this place actually gets some business. The food is relatively authentic, if you will, plus the portions are huge and the prices are right. Also, the salsa verde has a delicious avocado flavor to it and the staff is courteous.

So if the food deserves 3 stars and the service 4 stars, why does my review give "Taqueria" (as the succinct outside signage indicates) the 2 stars? The restaurant itself! First, there's the location. Marin Square: a dumpy 80's-era strip mall that is one step away from having vacant storefronts. Then, there's the dining experience. The dining room is absolutely miserable! It's always--always--stuffy, humid, and hot. I would opt for the outdoor seating, but the white plastic tables and chairs are cramped and dirty.

I recommend this taqueria only to folks who can't make it to Picante on the other side of the freeway. Also, it's a relatively decent spot to grab something cheap and filling to go, which is the only way I ever eat here any more.

My coworkers and I head here every Tuesday. It's even posted as a reoccurring meeting on our calendars to avoid scheduling conflicts each week.

Food here is cheap, delicious and authentic. This place has killer tacos (the chicken and el pastor are superb), salsa bar (green is the best) and wonderful fresh carrot and juice de melon.

Often a coworker will eat an entire double-meat super burrito and then foolishly attempt to be productive on return to the office. Time and time again they quickly fall into a severe burrito-coma and are reminded of the quiet (and sometimes dangerous) powers of Taqueria Mi Familia.

I love this spot is is located inside a little shopping center next 2 Subway Sandwhiches and Marin Square cleaners. The wet Burritos are off the hook in here also the food prices remind me of the Mission back iin the day b4 it was popular and you could still get a burrito for like four or five dollars.

I went here last week I got 2 regular carne asada burritos $4.05 ea, 1 Super Carne Asada Burrito $5.05, 3 Jarritos Total $18.21 you cant beat that.

They also have a salsa bar and are pretty friendly I go here whenever im in the area check it out.

This place is great. It has the usual burrito joint stuff, but the Caldo de Res ( beef stew)  is awesome!!

This Taqueria, and it's sister restaurant in San Anselmo,  serves the best carnitas hands down in Marin.  I usually get a tostada or soft tacos.  They put sliced potatoes in the jalapeno and carrot mixture at the salsa bar.
Yummy!

Let's be honest with ourselves for a moment.  There plenty of combinations of food thrown together in a tortilla calling themselves "burritos" circulating out there; Mi Familia happens to be the real deal.  I judge a good burrito by the Al Pastor, or marinated pork.  Other then the La Pinata burrito trucks (yes, trucks!) in Oakland, San Leandro, and various other parts of the East Bay floor, this place is the best.

This place is cheap and delicious through and through.  You can not and will not find a better place in San Rafael.

Yes I am a pompous burrito enthusiast.  Get over it.

Having lived in Mexico for a few years, the 2 most authentic tasting Taquerias I have found in Marin are Taqueria Mi Familia and Taqueria San Jose http://www.yelp.com/bi... .

It's always a testament to the quality of the ethnic food when most of the patrons of the restaurant are of that ethnicity.  When you go on Sundays, you see many of the local Mexicans dressed in their Sunday best.

Almost every other Mexican place in Marin doesn't have Mexicans eating inside the dining room.  If they are there, they're all working in the kitchen and a lot of the recipes have been altered for Gringo tastes.

While I like the atmosphere of Taqueria San Jose best (especially the juke box), parking is a bit of a pain.  Thus, I usually prefer to go to Taqueria Mi Familia.  Easy parking and quick service.

The Ceviche is really good.  The tortas de carnitas are excellent.  The rice and refried beans taste as they should.

On weekends, they usually serve menudo (the hangover curing breakfast of champions).  The also serve a huge bowl of beef stew.

They make fresh orange juice and carrot juice to order.  Our favorite is to have them mix both juices together.  They also usually have horchata and melon waters.  The horchata (rice flavored with cinnamon water) has a nice flavor.

The chili relleno is spot on and the pork tamales are really good.

The Shrimp Cocktail is OK.

The soft tacos are delicious and the hard tacos are good.  We usually get them with carnitas or al pastor (mostly pork).

The Chicken Enchiladas are good.

The Burritos (which are not authentic Mexican food as they were invented in the US) are large and filling.

They have a side area with all you can eat chips and authentic Mexican salsas (which means that most of them are spicy!).

If you're longing for the authentic tastes of Mexico, I highly recommend Taqueria Mi Familia.

I happened to stumble onto this place today at lunch with a friend.  I don't know why I never noticed it before, I guess because I was always going to kragen and always broke so i never really looked around.  Anywho, the service was quick, the food was delicious and the prices were unbeatable.  I had the tacos dorado (five crunchy tacos) and my comrade had the jumbo burrito.  We will both be back to try more stuff!!

Really Good! I think it's one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants I've been to. I was craving for Mexican food and found this a hole in the wall restaurant and it was amazingly good! I had carne asada plate. Yummm!! You can tell if it's good and authentic Mexican by the amount of Mexican people dine in! and, the salsa and chips are endless!! I'm going there again soon for sure!

Delicious food, big portions, and very cheap.  The plaza is a little daunting to go in... there are a plethora of day laborers milling along the periphery of the plaza (and with that on days are uncomfortable stares) and not to mention on one of the busiest streets during high traffic hours of San Rafael.  However for under eight dollars you can get a Mexican plate dinner that includes rice, your choice of meat (go for the carne asada!), beans, lechuga y tomate.  Seriously, my boyfriend and I shared this dish and we were so full!  I will always go back for the authentic flavors and affordable prices.

Favorite burrito spot in the Canal Area that is fairly unassuming from the outside, wedged in between a subway and a dry cleaners. Don't be detoured by the outside or by the blandly decorated inside, it's all about the food here. The crowd is mostly Canal residents, day laborers and blue collar types and at lunch time there can be bit of a wait. One thing I like a lot is that the staff sends someone out to take orders and start your food while you wait in line to pay, very time efficient and makes you feel engaged rather than zoning out in line.  Prices here are very economical  and the portions are grandisimos. I usually get the super chicken burrito  with black beans and no sour cream, hasn't let me down yet. Be sure to check out the monster soccer trophy in the kitchen, that was my soccer team back in 2003, we won the "Liga Latina de la Bahia" Boo ya!!
