I love El Portal. Always great service and food. Amazing spices. I thing everybody should go to this restaurant. The last time I asked for el burito de camarones al mojo y ajo, which is not on the menu, and they deliver absolutely delicious juicy full of flavor burrito and we ordered regular buritos de asada for whole family, everybody enjoyed them.

El portal is the doorway to authentic mexican food! I've gone here for years and love it! Their Carnitas super burrito is what it's all about. lots of food, for cheap! their salsa bar is decent, chips while you dine in or ask for a bag to go. I always get my order to go because I like to eat my burrito with a knife and fork. Lay it out, smother it in hot sauce and enjoy that B**ch!

Bad neighborhood, great food. Try their chicken enchilada plate, complete with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and tortillas. Another solid option is their Carne Asada plate, which my wife swears by. Also, try their Shrimp Cocktail, loaded with Pico de Gallo, huge shrimp, and avocado. Add some tapatio and you're in for a refreshing treat.
My only gripe is that their chips are sometimes a bit stale, and unless you're fluent in Spanish, don't attempt any special orders. Trust me, it's just easier on everyone.
If you can get passed the 'barren blues' that is North Highlands (and the potential language barrier), then this place is a real winner. -

I love this place so much. I once lived in the North Highlands area (when I lived with my parents) and this was the one place that we would all go for our Mexican food. The owner is super nice and is always working the counter every time I come in. The rest of the family also works in the restaurant (the daughters and sons are so nice and sweet) and I always feel at home when I am there.
The best item on their menu is the Chicken Super Nachos! Hands down the best. They don't skimp on the portions or the toppings (I have been to places where they give you lots of chips but a small amount of sour cream, guacamole, etc). The free chip/ salsa bar is always yummy and they have horchata to drink too!
This is the best restaurant in the North Highlands area, hands down!!! -

I've been going here for years. The owners are very friendly and the food is always exceptional (much better than Adalbertos, imo). They make my favorite burrito: super carnitas with plenty of burrito sauce. Mmm... :) Although the staff may seem quiet when you first meet them, they become very friendly if you are a regular. Lawl.

Well i been coming to this place for quite a few years now, My Main reason to coming back here was that they were one of the few places that served Tripe tacos in north Sacramento (north highlands), well there are more places now days. But this place its quite and just great to eat some mexican food at.
Don't get me wrong i know for most of people eating Tripe or Tongue tacos would be disgusting.... but u guys know where the cheap burger paddies are made from... ??
Anyways this place has good service, its owner its always there taking orders, They don't have Waiter service, which is OK.. because if u have any questions about the food you can just ask to the owner.
I haven't tried the whole menu yet, i usually just go for the tacos.. and the location of the restaurant.. close to my friends neighborhood. but i bet all of the plates are good. This told from a real mexican(me). not lieka regualr taco Bell.. and their mexican Wanna be food.,
By the way the prices.. could be just a lil bit more than an average taco, but i say tat the tortilla are well done, tacos are well served, and they had great salsas, and mexican water flavors UNLIMITED, and u can always sit and watch thier Ok size TV. -

I always drive pass this place going to and from work. After looking at the reviews, it convinced me. Thought what the hey, lets try some "authentic" mexican food. When my sis and I stepped in the restaurant...the lady at the counter just looked at us...no hi...no smile..no nothing. We said Hi to her. I thought it was more like a restaurant but it reminded me of Betos, like the menu items and sitting area. I just ordered a super taco since I was not hungry and orchata. My sis had a plate lunch with tacos and tortillas. The chips they had out were gross...stale.....he even brought out some more and it still tasted weird and stale! The sauces were not good at all.. I had so much better, not much of a variety. As I was biting into my taco, I was comparing this place to all the mexican taquerias I've been to. It was not bad, but I had so much better. My sis agreed as well.

I read mostly good reviews before coming here for lunch with my nephew. we started out with the chips and salsa bar, the chips I could tell were not out of a bag but they were very stale! They need to add a heatlamp or just start putting out fresh chips every other hour. the salsa was very good though.....
I ordered the combo with the chile relano and a pork tamale, they both had way to much sauce on them. The chile relano didn't have the crispy texture on the outside that I find at other places but it did have alot of cheese.
The pork tamale on the other hand had a taste I really didn't care much for. I think they were using south american seasonings? but I am not sure. I didnt even eat half of it.
On the plus side this food was cheap but I dont think I will go back there anytime soon. Maybe we just came at a bad time, it was a Saturday around 5pm so you think they would have there best stuff at dinner time.
Also my nephew used there bathroom as we were about to leave and he said it was filthy.
I am giving 2 stars to this place because the food was cheap and I am thinking that I went there at a bad time.
I will try it again in a couple weeks and see if this improves I will write another review.... -

hells yeah. this place rocks! very authentic food and environment. self serve chips and salsa, and fountain soda. unique menu options, i'm pretty sure they serve menudo.
i felt like a mexican mafia was going to bust through the doors and shoot everyone dead. and it is in north highlands, so this is possible... order to go.
