Manhattan, NY
This place is amazing. They have a great hangover soup which is served on Saturday and Sunday during brunch.
During the week they have THE BEST homemade chicken noodle soup. That's probably the "lightest" item on their menu.
The tacos are awesome. I really enjoy the steak and lamb. The ground beef is flavorful but greasy and the fish taco is a bit too fishy. I don't believe they have a chicken taco.
The cost is dirt cheap, around $3.00 per taco. Def worth stopping in for a snack, full meal or brunch. Also be sure to check out their outdoor patio. -

My first meal as a Jersey City homeowner.
We had just entered into a lifetime of debt at a Realty up the block and apparently signing your life away makes you hungry because all I could think about was getting my grub on. So we walked down to the infamous taco joint.
Now, I understand the controversy and don't want to start my Jersey
life on a bad note but I was still hungry ,was jonesing tacos, really wanted to try their food and make up my own mind because I'm like that.
Much has been said about the location so I won't get into that.
Lots has been written about the process, order at the counter etc., all true.
Attitude? Not in my case. They were friendly and walked me through the ordering process but then again I was in a really good mood...infectious? Maybe.
Let's talk about the food though.
Tacos: Chorizo, fish and beef.
A quesadilla with steak and cheese. We brought our own drinks.
Everything was simple, fresh and flavorful. The price is right too.
That's exactly what I want from my taqueria. -

I didn't find any attitude when I came for lunch the other day. They were rather pleasant. It isn't their fault they do not cook gringo Mexican.
The tamale was super moist. The tortilla soup has a load of flavor. Fish tacos were fried to perfection. Flautas weren't bad.
I liked this place and cannot wait to go back with a 6 pack. -

They treated us like garbage.... They did not smile at us... They will not sit us at the room until all the three of us showed up... Disgusting place. A shame considering that they are Latinos like us...

Once in a while I'll be heading somewhere and I get this urge for a taco from this place... The tacos are so addictive. I always mix it up with some great pork tacos which are a must but what really amazed me was the fish taco. The mild seared fish with the awesome cole slaw on top is just an incredible balance of flavors.
The kitchy setting is great and the service has always been friendly to us. I love the back courtyard space, I wish it was open more often. The only thing I didn't care for was some of their friend items were a bit greasy. Regardless, that's not why I go there. I go for the tacos which are incredible, flavorful, easy to eat and most important to me, consistently good. -

Came here again with my roommate and boyfriend. Love the fact that it is BYO.
Ordered the steak taco and the chorizo taco. Both were great. Very inexpensive and delicious!
After another trip, my favorite has become the bistec taco. YUM!
Will be coming again in the not too distant future!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Haven't been here in ages, I hoped that the service & attitude would've changed by now.
Nope. Snooty shits as ever. My friend's inquiry about their menu items were met w/an impatient smirk & rolling of the eyes. WTF, they weren't even busy, there were only 3 other customers all of whom were already seated and eating!
Yeah, the food may still be decent, but with such an appalling attitude, they can take their food and shove it.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Thumbs way up. The price is good. The tacos are excellent. The tostadas are excellent too. I've been there at least 5 times at this point, and service hasn't been all that bad. Given the price, it's good enough.
At the moment, I can't think of a JC place that's a better value. I badly wish I could say differently, but JC restaurants need to step it up - in my humble opinion. Again, thumbs way up for this place. -

Run, don't walk! Or if it's cold, drive. But get thee to Taqueria Downtown quickly. It's that good.
This is a place where you can blindly point to anything on the menu and be happy with the result. It's also a place that can claim to be the original outpost of a restaurant that has made its way across the river to NYC, and not the other way around, quel surprise! So let's continue to show it our JC love.
Here's what I like: fish tacos (flaky, perfect fish with a yummy slaw and just the right amount of spiciness - enough for me to fan my mouth a few times and grin with glee); pork tacos; beef tacos; basically, all the tacos.
Flautas are pretty good but a little crunchy! Make sure your teeth are in tip top condition before trying.
Rice and beans that come with most dishes - delish! I'm not sure if they're vegetarian (....so you might want to ask) but they are so amazing that you also might want to pretend that they are, even if they aren't.
Took some foodie friends who rarely leave the island of Manhattan and they were asking when they could come visit next. Two weeks later, the NYC outpost opened. Wahhh! -

The short fat guy that seats people is a clown and annoying but the food is awesome - sort of run like the soup nazi on Seinfeld but understand that and its not an issue at all.
The food is awesome, we always get the tacos and they're too many to choose from. We've been here 20+ times in the 3 years in JC and always get some combination of the pork, lamb, steak, or chorizo tacos...very decent prices and never leave hungry.
Anyone leaving less than 4-5 stars is clueless and just a diva...if you haven't been here, go here and you'll be hooked. -

I do like the prices and the food, but I do find that their attitude leaves something to be desired. I understand that perhaps that is suppose to be their "thing" but let's face it, they aren't Hoboken's Leo's or NY's Rao's ... You are just Taqueria (in what I feel is the best city on earth... maybe Paris is a close second).
Some of very dear Mexican friends laugh at me for going there because of the "nonsense" if we go out to eat they will ONLY go to their specific spots in Union City. Some of those places also have the "we don't have nachos, fajitas, guacamole, sour cream blah blah blah" edicts, but they are giving your food with a smile... -

Jersey City, NJ
Good food, fun ambiance. I like that this place is festive, and cheap, and byo. The brunch is surprisingly delicious (it is essentially the same as dinner...with eggs), and the dinner is hearty and satisfying.
The tacos are good but quite small, you'll have to order several for it to be a dinner. The flautas are essentially a taco salad. The way to go for dinner is to order either one of the burritas or the enchiladas. The enchiladas are delicious. They are also the only thing on the menu that can be even partly customized....you can order rojo or verde sauce and you can order chicken or cheese enchiladas. The plate comes with two enchiladas, and they allow you to select the sauce and request one chicken and one cheese enchilada come with your plate. (Warning: the chichen enchilada is always a little dry....it's just shredded chicken inside a tortilla).
Overall this is a good place - good food, fun for a quick and casual dinner. -

This place has the best chicken soup you could have for the price, perfect for these windy nights. It comes with the fresh herbs on the side for you to toss on the soup. Yumm! I also enjoy the quesadilla a lot. The service is fast, the decoration is cool. Definitely a place with lots of character and charm. I am giving it just 4 stars because the music is so incredibly loud for such a small place that you have almost to scream to the person who is sitting in front of you in order to be heard. I was there with my friend having dinner and it was a not so busy night,so I asked if they could lower the music a little and was totally ignored. Com'on It is a restaurant, not a club.

Wanted something cheap, fast, and close to eat, before going to Manhattan...This was the perfect spot. I had a couple tacos, carnitas and tilapia...they were just solid authentic tacos with good salsas. The radish on top was a nice touch too. I would come back.

"taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store."
Good luck in the LES because I'd be happy to see you leave Jersey City.

I often order takeout from Taqueria. I've tried the cactus and fish tacos, but my usual are the verde or roja enchilidas. The food here is affordable and well prepared. It won't be heavy like some of you standard mexican-american places. Different menu for the weekends -- running brunch. Closed on Mondays. Good looking guys, seemingly girlfriend-less, come to dine in or take out thursday and friday evenings -- I don't know why that is.

Uh, idk what the hype is about. I got the Chicken flauta plate- and the flautas SUCKED. I mean they were DEFINITELY reheated in a microwave, which is okay sometimes.. but not to fried food! Also, the chicken stuffing in it was SO INSIPID, literally it was shredded chicken with salt and pepper. I coulda made that at home. Only saving grace of that meal was the salad, some pico de gallo type thing they put on it and the beans. They were good and if it weren't for those sides, i would have been hungry and out of 7 bucks.
Service- sucky as hell, the lady and guy at the front who take orders for take out are super rude. Glad i did not eat in. I honestly think people hyped this place up because its an older establishment and has become somewhat a "staple" of jersey city, but i don;t care if george washington himself ate here, if the food sucks, it sucks. Maybe it was better when it was a food truck, but now it doesnt seem like they care about their food. Ive had frozen taquitos from sams club that were ten times better than those flautas i had.
I'm SO disappointed especially because of the amazing reviews. Obviously, im never returning. -
Review from Kim B.
Delicious pork tacos! I have tried a few bites of the steak taco and that was great too. Remember to ask for the hot sauce. It gives the tacos that magical "kick" that is necessary to top off all taco eating experiences. Love that the meat is very tender! They also open the outside patio when it is a nice day.
Great for lunch & great to just stop by for a quick snack... Even though the place is very small and the tables are always filled with taco lovers, I have NEVER felt like they were rushing me out.... so that's a plus too! -
Review from Marcus D.
Excellent stop for lunch today: three tacos, one pork, one steak (spicy with a nice kick) and ground beef. Everything tasted fresh. Cool mix of music, some nostalgic posters and photos on the wall (Led Zeppelin II album cover, The Who, etc). Cute girl behind the counter makes everything even better.
No disgusting after effects to report. -

A decent Mexican place in my neighborhood. I've wanted to try their food for years but I finally got my hands on it last night when it was 20 degrees outside... Food was okay but the service was frustrating. It's a fastfood type restaurant where you order from the coutner first and get a seat to be served. They give you a small flag with a number on it, so once you place it on your table, the server knows where to deliver your food. Delivering and cleaning parts were fine, but the lady who took my order at the counter was rude with no smile, rushing me through although i told her it was my first time there... I know their business was doing well (based on the number of people waiting in line last night) but I wish the staff were a little more friendly. Plus the food wasn't that great.

The folks complaining about the service at a $2.50/taco restaurant where they bring the food to your table need to go back under their bridges. You (1) get in the right line (2) order when you get to the front or let the guy behind you go ahead so as not to hold folks up (3) take the card and sit, and (4) enjoy your drinks until the food comes.
The staff is generally very friendly and the food is amazing. I know the fish tacos come well recommended, but don't forget the lamb tacos too. They are a little spicy, but very good.
The ground beef tacos are amazing. They put peas and peppers in, and it tastes a little like the filling of a shepherd's pie.
For the more adventurous, try a mushroom "quesadilla". This is nothing like a soft-corn wheat tortilla quesadilla- they take a fried masa shell, stuff it with mushrooms, cheese, and sour cream ( you can ask them to hold stuff), cook it, top it with cheese, salsa, and lettuce, and serve. You might love it; you might hate it, but if it's worth $7.00 if you enjoy it (it costs $3.50), you might as well try it once. -

Their tacos here are pretty good. The fish taco is definitely one to try, and I would suggest the lamb one too, which is nicely grilled. The pork taco is also very good, as well as the chorizo one. As for the enchillda, rice & beans, I wasn't very impressed. I think it's best to stick with the tacos. When I come here, they are usually pretty quick with making the food. I definitely plan to make this one of my regular go to places, however likely will just stick to the tacos when I do stop in.

Delicious and cheap tamales. Two tamales is more than I can eat in a sitting. The inside isn't particularly nice, but I like the patio out back.
If you haven't been there before, go when it's less busy to get familiar with the menu without someone yelling at you.
Everyone is in a huff because of the owner's comments on JC list. If you're on JC list, you've got no place complaining about being called trashy. It's like an online version of the Jersey Shore.
But I do hope they'll keep the one here open, I'm way too lazy to go to the LES. -
Review from Young C.
Jersey City, NJ
Be forewarned! This is going to be a place you're going to hate to love.
It's one of those places that has a manifesto or something to that effect on the menu and states we don't do gauc at your table side and we don't do fajitas (3x) in their list of ten commandments. So you know right off the bat that the waiter isn't going to stand for you asking to substitute rice for beans...youre just going to have to live with it.
You stand in line to order but you wait to get seated. Think again before your party of 2 walks over to the 4 chair table. If you do, the guy will come and yell at you telling you to wait for a 2 person table.
The food is ridiculously good though. I like the carnitas tacos as well as the fish taco (on a corn tortilla). The steak taco is quite spicy so watch out! Other highlights? 1) BYOB, 2) they have a patio, 3) it's in the neighborhood!
It's so good they started another location in LES, and it's so good that I keep coming back even though I can't stand how they're horribly rude. -

I'm so disappointed to have read this quote, posted from a http://www.jclist.com post by the owner of Taqueria:
"taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store."
--First off, I was one of their FIRST customers, when they were slinging tacos from a food truck on the corner of Montgomery and Grove. Man, that was CLASS all the way. Did you have a permit?
Then I realized the guy was a big Van Halen fan, so I told him I'd bring him in a cd of a rare concert. I asked for nothing back; just happy to have them in the 'hood. He replies, "That would be great. I'll pick up your meal if you do!"
I didn't ask for that. I came back, forgot the CD, he asked for it, and I said, "next time." Then I brought it in, ordered meal, and he gave me.....uhhh, nothing. Again, didn't ask, but he offered.
As for the food. It's GOOD. Not great. GOOD. I live in the Mission in San Fran, and there are SO MANY better spots. Since then I've tried places in NYC as well. Also better.
The owners, and the people who work there, act like they're the coolest hing since Brooklyn supposedly became cool.
Check yourselves.
You just lost a customer, one who told EVERYONE to go there. -

Jersey City, NJ
I used to like the food here, but I will never eat at this filthy, low-class establishment again. I was always willing to overlook the brusqueness of the service, the rudeness of the owners and the cheapness of the setting and atmosphere, but no fish taco is good enough to be worth the slander and insult that the owner dishes out to the customer base that made him successful enough to open a NYC location.
After a customer posted some disagreeable comments about the (ORIGINAL) Jersey City restaurant, the owner wrote on http://www.jclist.com:
"taqueria downtown is so busy and runs well enough on its own, so we can focus on taqueria LES. Can't even tell you the difference in class in the clientele in NYC than that in Jersey. So don't worry, it's just a matter of time before we close the jersey store."
That's a sickening attitude. The people of Jersey City made this guy successful enough to open a LES location, and this is how he repays us?
Sorry, but the fish tacos aren't THAT good. Not by far. -

'Ordering rules'....whatever. Lots of people love to complain about this place, but it's really not that serious. In five years of cheap, delicious dinners, I've never had a problem with the staff or their peculiarities.
Love the tacos (and hot sauce) and the patio is a nice option when Van Vorst is overflowing with people. If it closes, I'll be sad to see it go. -

I love BYOBs - love 'em!!
So I am quite biased already about this place. But the food was delicious and I like the no-nonsense order first-sit down-wait for order system. Prices are ridiculous too - so it makes sense to make this a regular dinner spot when you don't feel like cooking or ordering in. We sat outside on a pleasant breezy evening last weekend and were in total bliss.
Our small group ordered the steak, lamb, ground beef and cactus tacos - all were excellent though the steak and cactus tacos especially stuck out to the non-vegetarians and vegetarians in our group, respectively. I can't wait to go back and try the stuffed poblanos, my favorite Mexican dish! -

Hint: Know how to order for smooth sailing.
Taqueria is VERY particular about how you order your food and what you order. Follow their line procedure, and all will be well.
I say this kindly, for the food is absolutely delish and the atmosphere is fun, funky, and not pretentious.
But I cannot emphasize enough: Do not ask for nachos or chips and salsa. Do not deviate from the menu. Stick with their tried and true specials and you will be rewarded with delicious noms and no attitude.
Their menu is the closest I've had since visiting Texas, and I love bringing Brooklyn friends to this establishment to get in on the goodness. You can bring your own beer to save some moolah, which is terrific.
Don't miss out on this. Just know know what you're getting into. -
Review from Andrew D.
This is now my favorite Mexican restaurant. I've been searching for reasonably priced, accessible, and tasty Mexican food for a while now, and here it is.
Tacos range between $2 and $3, and everything is great. I recommend the carnitas because, well, it's the best idea for a taco ever, and Taqueria Downtown executes it brilliantly. The burritas are quite amazing, as well. I had to slow down while I was eating so that I didn't choke or explode my esophagus.
The decor is an insane mish-mash of Mexican kitsch, comic books, rock-and-roll memorabilia and clever bumper stickers. They apparently will give you a discount if you present a ticket from a RUSH concert. There are photos of employees and friends stuck into the newspaper clippings and concert posters covering about 1/4 of the walls.
For the uninitiated:
When you enter the restaurant, you get in the Dine In or Take Out line, and you order your food and pay for it. They give you a number. You find a seat. They bring you your luscious food shortly and take the number away.
They have Tecate beer in cans, and a handful of soft drinks for ingestion, but it's also BYOB. So throw a couple of beers in a bag and have a good meal.
They DO take credit cards.
It does get crowded. Try not to dally too long if there's a line. You're keeping people from getting to their tacos.
There are Trivial Pursuit cards on the tables in case you can't find something to talk about.
Enjoy. -
Review from Emily P.
A fresh take on tacos and a great location, this restaurant offers bright ingredients, a fun atmosphere, and not a lot to weigh it down. Owners of the cult fave recently expanded into a second location in NYC. Everyone in Jersey City knows where the Taqueria is, at the corner of Grove Street and the quiet entrance to the marina at Paulus Hook. Its a favorite place to take visitors perhaps because it gives a sweeping view down Grove Street. Expect a different experience and appreciate the crisp fare.
You'll find that service is quick: place an order, pay at the counter, take a number, and grab a seat. The Taqueria is a bit of a bluster and you're expected to Rush (see also: fave band of the owners) ...deciding what you want can be a little intimidating to people looking for a relaxing experience. I don't feel like I can linger here after my meal, except perhaps on weekends.
Taqueria offers unique food. If you've heard anything negative, its usually from friends who asked for sour cream, nachos, or other typically cliche "Mexican Food" fare. The staff are always busy and a little short with patience, but generally nice and the food is great. I recommend the fish tacos paired with an avocado tostada.
When the weather is nice, their outdoor space feels like you're at an intimate backyard picnic. Inside you'll find eclectic decor and wall art that reveals a penchant for colorful memorabilia and hard rock music.Listed in: Let us Lunch, Vegetarian

Review from Pinky and the B.
New York, NY
I found this on Yelp and it was Meghan M's review that got me!
The Mexican in Jersey in general is more authentic and better than in NYC. I did give a 5 star review to one Mexican in the Bronx but I only gave it as it compares to other NYC Mexican. If the Bronx restaurant was in LA I would give it 3 or 4 stars.
Here the pros and cons are as follows-
The Pros
1)great authentic flavorful food
The Cons
1)terrible, mean, nasty service
2)ice berg lettuce trying to fill my Tostada it was almost all ice berg! Who uses iceberg in 2011? And there was hardly anything else in it. There was no tomato either!
3)very cramped, and outdoor garden is permanently closed.
4)one other reviewer said it smells like Windex,. yes it does!
5)you pay at the counter, no table service, my husband asked for water and he is always super polite and she just said no!
6)limited menu
We were not full and wanted to order more but left and went to Pacquito's in Manhattan to finish off our meal because we did not want to deal with the mean nasty girl behind the counter.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
When you get there you will know who I am talking about. If you are used to my reviews you know I rarely complain about service.
But she went out of her way to be mean and nasty to everyone who came in. She must be the daughter of the owners or wife. Other wise there is no way someone like her could possibly keep a job! The 2 guys were really nice and there was one other girl she was okay but this one was really mean and out of control for no reason! Meghan said pay attention and you are fine, No way! There is nothing anyone could have done to make it a more pleasant experience!
Meghan was right about the Tamale which I ordered it is up there with one of the best I have ever had! And yes I have been to Tortilleria Nixtamal.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
This was better.
My husband said the tacos are some of the best he has had! And he knows Tacos! He had pork, fish and beef tacos. I would go back for sure but I would only order take out.
On a side note there must have been a memo that went out because all of the couples in there were an Asian/ white mix of some kind. It was pretty funny only the counter girl did not think so.
I do not know what her problem was, normally I would be down for some mud wrestling or something but I was too hungry!
So with only one pro and so many cons though the food is good I can only give it 3 stars and I do not usually take stars off for service. But this was over the top bad, nasty push a customer away for life bad service!Listed in: Jersey Girl list…, Mexican ,Tex Mex and Mexican…

Yea! to delicious, affordable food! Yeaaaaaaa
Seriously, this place is a hole in the wall but honestly that is how I like my Mexican food. I love the Fish Tacos and Lamb Tacos. I'm sure the others are great but, i don't eat beef or pork.
Ok things to be careful of when you go to this place. I mean there are some serious rules at Taqueria. It's kinda like the Soup Man in Seinfeld. You know where I'm going??? ok, I hope so.
Ok, if you are a party of 2 you better sit at a two seater table if you sit at a 4 seater you will be asked to move. Don't order something and say you don't like it and you want somethings else. Don't ask for any type of substitutions.
You also have to try the FLAN! It is fabulous, it is just so good. It must be a thousand calories but I am so not thinking about that when there is a spoon in my hand.
Overall, this place rocks a taco! also, its BYOB - if you want they sell cheap mexican beer ( Teketa- i think that's right) But, hey bring it! -

I guess when your roommate keeps nudging for us to go to Taqueria for lunch, it must be good. "My treat," she says. Well, you got yourself a deal, Missy!
When I saw the prices on the menu, I thought to myself, "no wonder she will treat-it's cheap!!". Tacos for 2.95? And even heuvo (egg) dishes cheaper than 10 bucks? I am definitely sold! We're still in a recession so good meals that come in that good price are hard to find.
I got the Huevos ranchos. I commented to my roommate that I enjoy food that looks ascetically pleasing (I like to take pictures of food). But you know what? Sometimes, you just gotta eat and fore-go the visualness. What I got was a VERY generous portion (whole plate was filled!) with fried eggs, bacon, re-fried beans, tortilla, and potatoes. For less than 10 bucks, you get such a fulfilling meal (beat that, chipolte!)
You can't go to Taqueria without ordering their famous (2.95) tacos/tortilla! I got their pork tacos. This is one of the best taco's I've eaten: fresh ingredients, good amount of salsa, tender pork on a warm soft shell tortilla. Lemon also goes a long way! Make sure to squeeze the lemon as hard as you can to give it the citrusy oomph.
Also, their rice milk is amazing. Not too sweet with a dash of cinnamon. Perfect compliment to the spicy salsa that accompanies your tacos.
Tacos are not my thing so for me to give it 4 stars, it's saying something! -

I was craving something greasy and delicious before my birthday festivities. Not pizza, not fries, not burgers... tacos? Taqueria wasn't too far from the biergarten, my birthday celebration destination. It was a plan.
Tiny place, smells like windex from table-cleaning, girl behind counter had an attitude, but man is the food DELICIOUS. I had a carnitas taco and ground beef taco, and I shared a plain cheese quesadilla with someone. Amazing. All of it. That's all I have to say. Why didn't I find out about this place sooner?
