I haven't tried anything but the super burritos from this place, but I have to give it to them...THESE guys mean business. What seems to be a 1+ lb burrito is jam packed with the typical stuff you'd normally find, but here's the kicker. Instead of guacamole, they use real avocado to line the insides of this tasty morsel. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against guac, but you have to admit, this is a refreshing take on the typical late night burrito.
There's always a line at night simply because they're open till 2am on the weekends to service the alcohol-induced hunger within the SF partyers. The line might be long, but they're so efficient at putting out orders that it's worth the wait. The only thing that I can say is a negative is the limited seating, but I'm sure it's only because I came during the peak rush.
The goods:
Open relatively late, free chips, decently decorated/clean interior, a pretty good, big & fat burrito, and for you carnivores -they serve meaty breakfasts.
The mehs:
Decent burritos, though I don't quite think they hold up to a couple of the other taquerias in the Mission. Their green chili sauce never does it for me (El Farolito's is way better in my opinion), either.
* So mainly it's that I don't consider their food to be so great.
I'd still come here again, though, if the mood struck.
My favorite of the 3 Cancun's in SF ( also one on Market and 6th as well as another on 29th and Mission ).
Fresh ingredients, huge portions, free chips and salsa, more space than lots of other taquerias, good prices and variety with continuous music usually playing from the juke box.
Order it spicy and get it SPICY ... YUM!!!
One thing that I usually go by when looking for a spot to eat, drink or play is to follow the crowd. The more people there are, the better it is there. I saw quite a few people here enjoying their food so I decided on stopping in for a late dinner before a night of drinking.
I went up to the cashier and asked him what he would order and he said the lengua super burrito. I went ahead and said "I'll get one of those". A friend and I grabbed a seat at one of the empty tables and a nice couple from Australia sat asked if the could join us on the table. We didn't mind at all. As a matter of fact they were great company!
The burrito was good, but I wasn't overly impressed with it. It could have used a little more salt and could be a little less watery. I guess that you can say that I am spoiled with the great taco trucks and restaurants around Oakland, but II think this place isn't too bad.
Really good burritos, you get free chips, as is standard in this city. When you order it spicy, it's actually spicy which is a HUGE plus.
Staff is quick, efficient and they never mess up your order.
I love going here when i'm drunk, it ALWAYS satisfies my cravings.
Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because it's cash only, but they do have an ATM right there in the store.
What makes these possibly the best burritos in the city?
Crispy tortillas. Soft enough to wrap the contents of a deliciously fat burrito but crispy enough to prevent that nasty tortilla-turned-glue effect, where the tortilla adheres itself to the underside of your teeth and gums.
And it's clean inside. But really, it's all about the burritos with crispy tortillas. Genius.
My friend brought me here when we were really drunk, but from what I remember, the burritos were delicious. Full salsa bar, which makes everything tastier. They actually have salsa that is spicy, I remember this because my mouth was burning, my nose was runny, couldn't open my eyes, and I felt like my lips were swollen. And yes, I would do it again. :)
After another spectacular showing of "Don Reeds East 14th" at the Marsh http://www.yelp.com/bi..., I was craving for something to nosh on the 45 minute ride home.
As we were cruising down Mission, my head swiveling back and forth like I was at a tennis match, the bright yellow decore of the Taqueria Cancun drew me like a moth to a flame! We pulled over and my son ran across the street and picked up some tacos and Horchata for us.
The taco's were very, very, very big for street tacos and the meat was just falling all over the place. This was good because they were about twice as much as I'm used to paying, but they were very good. The meat was moist, juicy and tender.
The Horchata was good, but the portion was small for the price.
They saved the day!
FRESH. Me, my hubby & cousin go here all the time. Like, at least twice a week for dinner, we get their veggie tacos. Ok, sometimes three times a week. And everytime, we realize when we get there that we don't have any cash, and have to make a run to the nearby convenient store to use their ATM.
Great Mexican food ... any time of the day, from day to late night. Salsas are so fresh and spicy ... fresh carrot juice too! Good usage of avocados ... mmm, now I'm craving a veggie taco.
kinda like el farolito, maybe 2.5
with the hoards of late night eaters, this place is packed. feels like an assembly line factory.
had an al pastor burrito, but it had so much other stuff in it, couldn't really taste the meat. why so many pinto beans?
chips? too salty.
We came here after Dolores Park yesterday after I inisisted I try a taqueria I'd never been to before. Or, at least one I couldn't yet count. Turns out Taqueria Cancun was my FIRST taqueria in SF, but since I came here while visiting, I didn't have any comparisons at that point, and it was long ago in July 2006.
I ordered the carne asada super taco, and let me tell you, this may be my new favorite taqueria! I still love Papalote for its ambiance (& food), but I may love this taco a little more. Fresh, excellent carne asada meat, ample avocado slices draped on top, and delicious ingredients made for one heck of a taco! And I do like the salsa here best!
I highly recommend.
Here for a capoeira event. Only thing that was near and open. I admit the service is fast. The register guy is quick and accurate and the staff is ultra quick. The restaurant is also very clean.
The only reason they're getting 2 stars? Most importantly, the food. Their chips are completely fake and not homemade like most taquierias! I ordered their nachos with carnitas. While the meat was moist, it was also oily and too salty. The balance of cheese and vegis weren't good either. I ended up eating mostly the meat and a few chips.
Totally dissatified.
After eating at many various taquerias around the city (mostly around mission) I've settled on this as my favorite. It's the tastiest and is amongst the cheapest that I've seen. It's about $5 for a regular burrito, $6 for a super burrito or burrito mojado.
Unless I'm on a lunch break I will always go for the mojado with whatever meat I feel like getting at the time. The al pastor and carne asada are my favorites, I found the shredded chicken to be slightly flavorless and it made the burrito too soggy.
There is another location downtown at 7th and Market that I'll go to when I'm at work. It doesn't seem to be quite as good as the one on Mission, but that could be in my head. It also has a problem with homeless people standing at the door yelling at you.
I had heard of La Taqueria and Pancho Villa before I even lived in the city, but never Taqueria Cancun. And yet, it's got just as many Yelp reviews, scores of "Best such and such 200X" plaques on the walls, and a bold claim to the "Best Veggie Burrito in the City". Now let's get one thing straight: you could not possibly have the best veggie burrito in San Francisco without at least one special ingredient in it. Ideally, you should have lots of special ingredients to choose from (at least as many as meat burrito eaters get). So I was disappointed to see that Cancun's is pretty straightforward. But it's still compulsively devourable, and a great deal to boot.
Throw in the canary-yellow + fire-hydrant-red color scheme, the heavy bench tables, and some sweet agua fresca flavors (like melon, perfect for an oppressively hot Mission day), and you've got a downright fun place to grab lunch. And no crowds either (though who knows what happens when the bars around here start turning out the hungry hordes).

Epiphany: Isn't the supposed "best vegetarian burrito in the city" just one block away?
I ordered my burrito sans cheese and sour cream, so it was beans, salsa, rice, onions, cilantro, and avocado. It was ok, but not what I thought the best would be. There was way too much rice, my biggest burrito pet peeve. It seemed lacking in flavor, I would call this a meatless burrito rather than a veggie burrito.
My burrito came with chips and two kinds of salsa....both of which were super spicy! I couldn't handle either one and ended up eating an entire box of junior mints to try and cool my mouth down.
So, I wasn't that impressed with my lunch. But I'm going with A-Ok as I think there are other items on the menu I will enjoy more -- the tacos, the prawns burrito, or perhaps ordering a veggie burrito mojado will jazz up the tortilla filled with rice. Plus, service was friendly and fast, and it's cheap.
Updated Status: No longer hungry, but not quite satisfied
New Location: Back to 18th and Mission
Nextmuni: Arriving...finally!
The most tasteless veggie burrito I've had since moving to San Francisco. Not only was it watery (dripping water down my arm, no less), it just didn't have any flavor. The beans tasted like they were dumped right out of a can and into the burrito. Maybe that's my fault for straying from my favorite re-fried beans and opting for the plainer pinto beans, instead.
I had to add so much salsa and hot sauce to the thing just so it would taste like something. I ate half because I was hungry, but it wasn't very good. I told Stanley K., who dined with me after shopping for party favors for the Playerz Ball, "I just know this is going to make me feel awful later." And it did! Plus, nothing is grosser than sitting in a restaurant, eating food, and being overcome by the stench of disinfectant. Nasty. Never again.
El Burrito Express 2, you're the best!
Yes, there are many taquerias in the neighborhood, but it's hard to resist the Taqueria Cancun, which is painted a bright yellow, red, and green.
I got the small taco just because I wasn't too hungry ($2.50). It was very small and tasty! The server was awesome though and included nachos and salsa. The green salsa almost made me cry (spicy!)...The red salsa was very good though.
The best Fish Tacos and Vegetarian Burritos in San Francisco. This is a very powerful statement. I've lived the Mission for a few years and I can tell you they don't get any better than this place.
I didn't want to write a review for Cancun until I'd had a chance to eat here while relatively sober. I did so this weekend and was fairly impressed.
One thing I like about Cancun is that it's efficient. Sure, it's crowded, but for the number of people in line after bars close you get your order taken and prepared rather quickly.
I ordered a super burrito with chicken. Some pluses are that they use avocado instead of guacamole, they grill the tortilla, and the cheese was melted. The chicken itself was nothing special, but it still hit the spot. Overall it was a very solid burrito.
Like El Farolito down the street, the chips here aren't very good, but the salsa is.
Veggie burritos here kick ass hands down.
Breakfast burritos aren't bad either
Nachos are atrocious. I can make better ones in my own microwave. The chips are soggy and the whole thing is tasteless.
Three things set this Taqueria apart from the rest: (1) hands down the tastiest carne asada of any of the taquerias in the mission, (2) sublime green salsa (worth the trip in of itself), and (3) the toasted tortilla. There is no comparison anywhere else.
I love you. I wish I could be closer to you. I found plus size tortillas and tried to imitate you at home, it was okay.
Sober I'd give their burritos 3 stars.
Drunk, I give it 5 stars.
But come on, nobody eats their sober, right? Or is it just me?
That was a DIRTY good "big burrito" for this Canuck!
I had no idea what to do with this massive plate. I thought it was a pick up and hoover type burrito, but I got a 10" long swimming in red and green goodness type. Uhhhh.
Fork and knife?
Spoon?
Oh F*ck it. Slurped that whole damn plate right in front of everyone.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Whoa! I usually eat at Gordo Burrito on 9th Ave and thought that was the best----- and you know what... I love Gordo so I will not speak badly of it, but this is very close competition! The burrito was extremely flavorful and delicious and had a real authentic flavor. I will definitely be back.
Fast service +1 star
Big Burrito +1 star
Yellow tables and cool music +1 star
I didn't really think that it was that amazing, but then again I got a veggie burrito... Burrito comes with chips and extremely spicy dip. No more dip for me, thanks.
At one time this was my favorite burrito in the city. But something changed here for the worse. It makes me kind of sad too, kind of the same way I feel when I listened to the puff-the magic dragon when I was little.
(I thought it was just me, but I corroborated this with an old-school burrito aficionado).
Well...Bye Puff.
If you are in the mission this is the place to go. A little crowded on the weekend but well worth the wait.
This is one of the hot spots to go to after hours, on a Saturday night. Though I go here sometimes on the weekdays.
They have one of my favorite burritos in California. And I've eaten many burritos as far north as Auburn, all the way down to Tijuana. The uniqueness comes in using plenty of cilantro and onions. The tortilla is soft, SF style. The burritos are very filling as I have never tried to eat more than 1. My best friend in San Diego had came up here and said that the burritos were very good. The tacos are also excellent. The prices are very reasonable.
The place isn't the cleanest, and they do not take credit/debit cards. Often at late weekend nights, it gets so crowded, there is nowhere to sit. They make their own hot sauce and it only comes in these very small containers and not in a squeeze bottle. To me, it's still all about the food.
My staple for prawn burritos.
Stuffed with shrimp. Well assembled. A portion trumped only by the amount of guilt and regret felt when finishing it. But you can't say no. You eat another bite, then another...
Comes with chips and merciless salsa.
Okay, I take back what I said earlier about this place. I stopped by last night after failing to meet up with a friend for Ethiopian. I swear, the only reason why I even went in here is because my car was parked right out front.
I surveyed the menu with skepticism, not wanting to get the carne asada tacos. I wanted something easy to eat in the car, so I decided on a super burrito with pollo asada and black beans.
$6.59 for one of the best burritos I've ever had in my freaking life. I'm not sure if the previous burritos just weren't tasty with carne asada or what, but the chicken made it THAT MUCH BETTER. And fresh chunks of avocado? Much better than the previous "guacamole" they shoved into my tortilla months ago.
Amazing. This place has earned my trust again.

I feel like I'm one of the few who doesn't actually like Taqueria Cancun.

this place looks, sounds, smells, feels and tastes like taquerias i went to in mexico city.
Veg burrito!
Duh
...but always you want to take one more bite until it HURTS!!
To preface this, my fried told me this was the best burrito she has ever had- so Taqueria Cancun had a lot to live up to and it did! The whole place looks like a hole in the wall. These places are the best because the best food comes from places like this. The inside was filled with bright banners and it just made me laugh when I walked in.
I copied my friend's suggestion on her super burrito with chicken and horchata. The burrito was ginormous, and I mean ginormous. But it was quite tasty. Filled with fresh avo, this burrito definitely made my books. The one thing I was disappointed with were the chips. They just were not my style of liking. Oh well, I can't wait to go back for another super burrito!
is it tobacco that people refer to as the "silent killer?"
in all honestly i think the title belongs to the greasy tortas here.
delicious, yes. killing you one bite at a time? definitely.
Taqueria Cancun is by far one of the best, if not the best Mexican restaurant in the city. Everyone seems to love their burritos. However, you are losing its soul! The best thing this joint has to offer is its tacos! Hence it's name "Taqueria..."
I am never disappointed here. EVER. It's finger lickin' good. Also, very cheap. No mainstream over-priced food here. Love it!
Only negs are the parking, if you drive and the fact that it's always packed no matter what time you go, but perhaps that's a good thing...
This place makes me feel like I'm in Tiajuana! Or at least pretty damn close to the border.
The carnitas here is amaaaaaaaaazing. You know how when you get cravings for certain things and a place comes to mind...? Well...when I get a craving for pork carnitas...it's Taqueria Cancun, all the way. (although there is a second runner up...see my review about Taqueria Vallarta on 24th Street)
BTW - get the burrito mojado (e.g. wet burrito). You will not regret it. It's heavenly. Do be prepared to take some of it home. HUGE portions.
"Vegetarian burrito" NOT vegetarian. I just had a lovely visit at Taqueria Cancun, I loved my burrito, I'm just thankful that I asked if the rice was cooked in chicken broth. The rice IS made with chicken broth for all y'all vegetarians. So... I ordered mine without rice, quite yummy. I love the chips and salsa!
I've eaten here before and its always been delicious!
Except the other night i ate here at 1 am and woke up at 6 vomiting my guts out. Im convinced i got food poisoning from their tacos.
:(
taqueria cancun happens to be my local place (less than a block away). I've always found the dudes that work here to be friendly, and you can usually find a seat. The lines can be long, but the food is worth it. I usually roll with the carne asada burrito, but the burrito mojado is their specialty, and you can tell why. It's a very good place but there are better options.
Forgive me Taqueria Cancun for not giving you 5 stars.
