Since living in Eastie I would have access to a lot of great Spanish food and Taqueria Cancun is one of them. I have only had their tacos but they are damn good compared to some of the other places I have had them in Eastie.  Their chicken is moist and flavorful, the beef is tender and flavorful and their fish tacos are good too but not really a lot of meat on it which sucks but still good.

Service is always good, atmosphere is also always good and interesting.  Prices are good and definitely worth the food and you will always leave full and happy!

I know what you're thinking...another Mexican joint in Eastie. But Taqueria Cancun ain't just a notch on the burrito bed post, it's more like the gal you wanna shack up with for serious...that's right, make the big move. Get a place together. Perhaps even live happily ever after.

After years of eating what I thought were good burritos (and I still maintain that Chipotle is tasty, and blows Anna's, Boloco, Felipe's AND Qdoba out of the water), I am now beginning to realize that, this entire time, I was loving Tabasco sauce and someone just set me up with some habaneros. My eyes have been opened. And by an unassuming, family-run, teeny-tiny hole-in-the-wall delightful little tacqueria just steps from the blue line.

Given the above description, I should have seen it coming. You can't find the good, authentic stuff in a space that was touched by the hand of a professional decorator, or from a menu that was concocted by a national corporation or cooked in space bigger than the average studio apartment in the city.

On a Saturday afternoon, the place a buzz with Spanish chatter, locals eating and delicious smells wafting from the kitchen. After being greeted by a delightful waitress who told me to take my time with the menu, I choose a chicken burrito and a pupusa. While waiting, the same friendly waitress made pleasant small talk, all the while bustling around to serve other customers. I noticed some packages of fresh mangos being sprinkled with black pepper and handed to other customers. I noticed I small orange, hand-written sign that simple said, "Cerveza: $3.50," and I also noticed a refrigerator filled with Jarritos! Hooray! In less than 10 minutes and for under $10, I was out the door with my order and transported to south-of-the-border heaven.

The pupusa was charred, giving it a fresh-grilled almost smokey flavor, with a creamy cheesy inside. The burrito was constructed expertly; it was not overfilled, the proportions were spaced out in a way that in each bite, you got a little of everything. I don't know how they do that, because every time I eaten a burrito elsewhere, I'm getting a mouthful of rice and cheese, then a mouthful of chicken and lettuce, and then a mouthful of beans and veggies. The vegetables were fresh and not overcooked or mushy, the rice was seasoned but not overly salted and the whole thing had a spice to it that didn't quite clear the nasal passages but kept my taste buds on their toes.

I am looking forward to trying their other dishes, as their open for lunch and dinner, and their menu is overflowing with so many drool-inducing dishes, it would be a disservice to my stomach not to eat my way through as many as possible.

So you're fleeing the office for a long lunch, but can't choke down another Financial District cobb salad? Hop on the T at Aquarium and ride one quick stop to Eastie. Walk a few steps from Maverick station to Taqueria Cancun. The speakers are piping Central American folk music too loud, the waitress brings a complimentary cup of chicken soup. You're pretty much in another world.

This place is great for a weekend brunch, too, as it serves far more than tacos. The menu is pages long with breakfast items, house specials and Salvadorian and Mexican fare. The supreme burrito is enormous and the best I've eaten in a long time. The guacamole is chunky and bright and the steak fajitas satisfying. Drinks include fresh fruit shakes and Mexican beers.

The one loser I encountered was the traditional breakfast of huevos al gusto. Eggs any style, chorizo or ham, pork rind, beans, avocado, plantains with cream and pupusas for just $7. Most of those things sounded delicious, so I ordered it. The chorizo was minced and scrambled in with the eggs, which were way too hard, overdone to inedibility. The pork rind was a huge, disgusting chunk of fat (which I should have expected). Beans and plantains were tasty, but I left most of the meal on my plate.

Quite good. In fact delicious for a vegetarian burrito. As others have said the sauce is yummy.

However, out of morals, i can not give any restaurant 5* that has a "credit card minimum".  Not only are these things illegal, but for someone who doesn't carry cash, a complete pain in the ass.

11/24/09 Update:
I was very disappointed recently by the Cancun.  Ordered a burrito with no cheese, being VERY specific about not wanting any cheese...guess what came on the burrito?  CHEESE!  They lose a star for tha

This place wasn't bad, the problem was it wasn't great.  The atmosphere is a bit like a fast food joint with a TV blaring, but the speed of the food didn't live up to the atmosphere.  The service wasn't great, but it was nice that the kitchen sent out little soups as a way to redeem their tardiness in getting the dinners out.  Soup wasn't good, too bad.  Drink selection isn't great, but almost all of the patrons had ice buckets filled with beers, which I assumed were a good deal.  In my opinion, prices were a bit high for the location, atmosphere and quality of food.

Holy crap, this place is great.  The veggie burrito was wonderful, and the spicy sauce that came with it was to die for.  Likewise for the chips and salsa ... so good!  Now I'm going to bother bex to take me there every time I come over:)

Actually, I don't think it'll be too hard to convince her ...

The burrito pollo supreme was so amazingly good, it almost makes up for the fact that the waitress hated us. I'm not sure even what we did..too friendly or happy maybe? But I would still go back for that burrito. We also tried the pupusas, which were ok. The guac rocks, the cup of chicken soup that everyone gets is yummy yum, and the Modelo is coooold.

I freakin love this place. I go here at least once a week. The food is great, they serve this awesome enormous Salvadorian beer I cant pronounce and my other fav, Modelo Especial. The prices are pretty high for the area but the portions are big and the food is great. It has a mostly latin clientele so brush up on your spanish. The waitresses are sweet but some dont speak english.

This is an authentic , cheap, quality place to get great Salvadorean / Mexican food. It has been owned by the 2-brothers for years. It is cheap, fresh ,VERY delicous hispanic food.

There is onlyn about 6 seats there - It is a take out place ,not a place to have brunch.

I have it several times a month

My Favorites :

Taco's - Are fresh come with onions , cilantro & Salsa

Pupusas- here are very good here !

Fried Quesadilla (yummy) , plato montanero ( big) ,

The menu had variety yet is very straight-forward.

Bon Appetit.

Great quality tacos for about $1.50 each. Soft corn tortillas made while you wait. I don't mind paying the tunnel to get there.  It is a tiny one room restaurant  and it may not look really pretty, but if you try it once, I am sure you will come back again.
It does not have the decor or the location as Taqueria Anna or Bocca Grande, but they can not beat the taste and the prices.

What a relief it was to find some good Mexican food.  Hallelujah!  And if I have to schlep to Eastie, so be it.  Hey, it's right at the Maverick T stop.  The soft tacos were fresh and delicious and the Guatemalen beer was the perfect beverage to wash it down.  I was disappointed in the banana shake; it tasted like banana-flavored milk.

The highlight is the chips. I really had to think about it, but I'm confident in saying that these are the best chips I've ever had. They're a bit different - they're a little thicker than average, but they're made fresh from tortillas, and you can taste it. The salsa that comes with it is tastier than average as well.

I had a salad in a taco shell, which generally is a boring vegetarian choice in Mexican restaurants, but was extra tasty here. There was lettuce, cheese, avocado, tomato, cucumber, pico de gallo, sour cream, and the best fried tortilla I've ever had. (I'd assume it's related to the amazing chips - and maybe it's just the exactly right taste for my brain, but it works!)

A decent Central American joint. The ingredients, including shrimp, were notably fresh. But I didn't think the food was anything special--in fact it was kind of bland--and the prices were no lower than average. Combining this with factors like poor wine and beer selection, uninspired decor, and clueless (though nice) service, I think three stars is kind.

aside from living within spitting distance of this yummy place, i *highly* recommend it.  i have brought several different friends here and never had a bad experience.

they serve authentic and traditional meals from various central and south american countries.  as a vegetarian i typically have a difficult time at south american restaurants, as EVERYTHING contains meat, but cancun serves a mean vegetarian burrito that can satisfy any veggie's cravings!

i also recommend the banana milkshake...takes away the spicy left on your tongue!
