I went to school at Texas State. For any special occasion, including selling my books back to the school, the Tap Room was my "special occasion place." If you think that's funny, you never lived in San Marcos.   Tap Room is the bees knees in this town.

The queso burger still makes me salivate every time I think about it. Think about some of the most delicious queso you've ever tasted.  Not that crap you heat in your microwave at home.  Then think about that on a perfectly cooked burger patty on some of the best buns beef has ever laid on. Mix that in with one of their fantastically delicious brews on tap. Side note:  if you order anything lite you suck. Go to some fratty bar down the street to get your Keystone or Natty Lite:

The queso burger, I maintain is still the best burger I have ever had. Also good:

    Chicken wings
    Hell burger
    Chips and Queso
    Big screen TVs everywhere

People complain about how dark this place is inside. Who cares. They don't have windows in there. The food is good and so is the beer. Get the Queso Burger!

My wife and I are going soon. She wants me to shut up about this place.

I just recently went to Tap Room for the first time a few months ago (when I finally turned 21 since you have to be above 21 to get in there after 5pm) and absolutely loved my burger.

Queso.Guacemole.Burger is the messiest thing you could imagine so DON'T order it on a date but its oh so delicious and now something that I constantly crave. Their crinkle wedge fries are pretty delicious as well!

If the ambiance matched the quality of the burger, it would be close to 5 stars but the darkness and smokiness of the restaurant really makes it not the best place because you will come out smelling of smoke.

I also had a bad experience with my waitress. She rushed the group of people I was with to order as soon as we sat down then when we finished she came by and picked up the baskets and dropped off the bill. We had wanted to sit around and have another drink or two but decided to go ahead and pay it. While we finished our beers, she came up and asked us to leave as soon as we were done because people were waiting for tables. It was awkward and rude (she didn't even say please!!!), but we stood up and walked out. Minus another star there... Sorry Tap Room!

Go ahead and start the World Travelers card. You get your name and a quote of your choice on a plaque and a free shirt when you complete it. After that is done, there is another card with bottled beers. I'm still working on my WTC.
During the winter, keep your coat on or sit in the back of the room because it gets cold every time the door opens. Tables are hard to find when it gets busy, but you should have got there earlier, and that's your girlfriends fault.
Every meal I've eaten has been delicious.
I think the wings shrink when they are on special though. Tell me I'm not the only one who's noticed this..
There's a tv in every corner and always a game of some sort going on.
It gets smokey at times, but remember, it's a bar. They are supposed to be a little smokey. Also if you are heading there and run out of smokes on the way, just wait till you get there to buy them, they aren't that much more than the convenience store and you're already late because your girlfriend, remember?

It feels very dark inside, especially if you've been out on a sunny day. But the selection of beers on tap is great, and they have a whole roster of beer mixes that I had never imagined.

My only issue with this place is that they will not honor requests to have your burger cooked medium-rare. We were warned of this by our waitress, but pleaded with her to try to get the cooks to make it to our liking. Sadly, they came out medium-well. It's unfortunate because they obviously try to use better ingredients, and use good technique to make their buttery crispy crinkle-cut wedge fries, and very good onion rings. While the burgers were pretty good, they really would have been great if cooked to a juicy medium-rare. If you take your burgers seriously, which The Tap Room claims to do, it is a bit ridiculous to be presented with overcooked patties even after a lot of pleading. Sigh.

Be warned that it is a smoking establishment. I don't mind cigarettes, but don't really like my clothes reeking of them.

I recently went to The Tap Room on a Wednesday night and I will definitely keep it in mind the next time I want a cold beer and some greasy pub food. The music was kinda loud and our friends told us that on the weekends it is standing room only. Our server was really nice, though she did insult my boyfriend for asking for a Coors. (Kiss my ass beer snobs of the universe.)
Regardless, I really like the place, our food was hot, and I am excited to take on their beer challenge of having a 22 oz glass of all the beers on tap (about 60).

Ok, the food here is amazing, service is fun as well.  Had an amazing burger.

Would give 5 stars for above, but the smoke knocks it down.  But would go back again and again to get a taste of that burger.

If you haven't had a burger here, you haven't lived!

They are huge, cooked to perfection, and served on the most awesome Hawaiian-like sweet bread!  Fries come separate, but they are home style and worth it!

Moving on-  they have plenty of beers to choose from!  Some of my favorites for the day were Amber-cott and Black Satin!

The only complaint I have is, I ordered a Michelada and asked for the beer to be Negra Modelo.  They said they couldn't do that and could only make it with Dos XX.  I just assumed they didn't serve Negra Modelo, but had Negra Modelo on the menu, so I am not sure why they "coudn't" do this....whatever!

Cool, local spot to hit up after a long day on the river. Good greasy burger selection and plenty of beers...although that's probably less exciting after you've been chugging beer for 5 hours.

Anyway, service was slow and the place was a little smokey but the burger really hit the spot.  They also have delicious onion rings and the ability to split checks - WIN.

Although i do LOVE their Guac Queso burger and huge beers, do not do not do not do not go to the tap room if you are in any sort of hurry.

But they do have any beer you could ever want and beer blends (try: Ambercott, weize ace, sunny ace, and the black satin.)  Their burgers are huge and incredible! i recommend the guac queso burger and a side of fries so you can dip the fries into the overflow of cheese!

Any restaurant can serve up a giant burger and claim that it's the best, but attention to detail is what pushes Tap Room's burger over the top.

Here are the key factors for me:

The sweet, kolache-style bun that's toasted to give a nice texture.  It's no coincidence that most places with a "great burger" don't short change one of the most important ingredients.

Grilled onions--that's another key.  Every great burger needs to have some  grilled onions and Tap Room offers them as standard.

To top things off, the burger was served steaming-hot, right off the grill and the rest of the veggies tasted very fresh too.

Perhaps I caught them on a slow day or maybe the cook was in a good mood?  All I know is that Tap Room has raised the bar on what a great burger can and should be.

I think its the bread is what rocks these burgers out.... mushroom swiss burger is huge, delicious and the fries on the side ain't bad either. It was top notch in college and hasn't missed a beat. A MUST if you are in San Marvelous.

Parking is a little tight and you have to pounce on tables (no real list) but its worth the effort for a broad beer selection and greasy burger.

    Fried Mushrooms - check!

Some friends and I stopped in here for a quick lunch before some minor shopping and a night out in Austin. It's right next to Texas State so I'm sure they stay pretty busy usually, but at lunch time most of the college kiddies are still in bed. Lucky for us!

No wait for a table and awesome service. We all ordered burgers with a variety of appetizers and everything came out perfect. My burger totally hit the spot after a night of drinking on 6th and the fried mushrooms were perfect. Now, this is not fine dining but I could care less! A good burger is just about all I need sometimes!

After giving Tap Room another go, I managed to give them too much of my money and way too much of my time... LAST TIME TAP ROOM.
The service here is so bad it's not worth the food to me. My table ends up being so pissed by the time our food arrives, everyone is too angry too enjoy much. SERIOUSLY GUYS. More waitresses? Better training? Less sucking?
I don't know. But the last time I was out with friends and one of them suggested Tap Room for dinner, she was hounded with a chorus of "NOs!"

Smoke is OK - I'm not OK with that.  Smoke outside if you are in a restaurant. Gross

All in all - pretty good grub and TONS of tasty beers!

3 words - Guacamole Queso Burger!

The food here is seriously good, especially for a bar.  There are plenty of great beer choices as well, including some blends, my favorites are Sunny Ace and Ambercott.

This is one of my favorite spots to eat and hang out in San Marcos.  There are only a few minor things that I do not love - the smoking, the parking, and the seating(which is a little uncomfortable).  But, none of these things have ever kept me from coming back.

There's not a lot to say that hasn't been said already.

Awesome selection of beer; only Saucer in Austin can beat it as far as I know. Super yummy food. Decent service. Lots of smoke at night. Lots of TVs. Lots of noise. Nice staff, but the bouncer is a dick. He has always been kind of an ass, but last time I went takes the proverbial cake of assery.

My only complaint is that we went for a friend's birthday - we showed up at about 11:30. The birthday boy was drunk, but not schwasted. I mean - it was his birthday. In a college town. As a college student- whatever. The bouncer turned us ALL away (a group of six) bc he was "fucking wasted." If that would have been the case I could have understood, if we had never been there, I could have understsood, if we weren't freakin' regulars, where three of the guys there completed the Around The World Challenge and have shirts and quotes on the wall - MAYBE I could have understood. But... none of that was the case. Whatev.

Good food, good beer selection, decent service. I won't base my review off one shitty experience, even though I really want to...

Wednesday wings is whats up. Ask for bleu cheese instead of ranch and order the spicy garlic or spicy bbq. I try to eat at least 24 each time I go now but a giant beer usually slows me down a little. The one thing that sucks though is parking... other than that this place is pretty badass.

We arrived here on Saturday afternoon so there were seats available and we could watch college football. It was recommended by someone at Aquarena Center. Unfortunately, we didn't get directions so it was VERY difficult to find. Eventually someone in the coffee shop in the front of the building told us how to find the Tap Room in the back. We liked the great bar atmosphere with the extensive collection of beer taps for decoration. My husband said his burger was great and the bun was yummy. My ultimate chicken, mushroom, Swiss sandwich was delicious! We are not fans of wedge fries though. It would be nice to see at least one non-alcoholic beer on their extensive drink menu. All the servers were friendly and attentive. We would definitely go here again.

I dig Taproom because they've got several ciders on tap, which makes me happy. They have a great selection of beers for the rest of you, and they serve your typical bar fare with some good burgers for all the carnivores. I seriously doubt anything here is vegan.

It's an OK place to spend some of your evening when the college kids are out of town, but beware when school is in session: it's ridiculously LOUD and ludicrously overcrowded. I've had some bad experiences with the female waitstaff blowing me off in favor of playing cutesy-flirty with the table of dudebros nearby. That's what I get for being female I suppose.

They have a handful of big TVs scattered around playing most of the relevant sports games, often with a vocal group of fans. All in all a fun place to grab a beer, drink something new, and catch a game.

    I. Love. This. Place.  Since my husband (then boyfriend) turned 21, we have been to this bar/restaurant for every one of our friends' birthdays, every big sporting event, and then some.

Their burgers are the best in town and possibly some of the best in the state.  They're served on a warm, buttery bun smothered in whatever you choose, from the guacamole queso burger, to the BBQ cheeseburger.

Their fries are also some of the best I've ever had: crispy, gently fried on the outside with a soft, pillowy flavorful inside.  I don't normally gush over fries, honestly.  But these are a force to be reckoned with and I highly recommend them.

The other two things on the menu that make my mouth water are their pork ribs and the Philly Cheesesteak.  The ribs are smothered in a sweet BBQ sauce (usually not my choice but on these it's amazing), and they fall off the bone when you try to eat them.  The philly is made with the best shaved beef I've had in years and smothered with cheese and other goodness.  It's to die for.

As far as beer goes they've got quite the selection and it changes periodically throughout the year.  They have different food/drink specials each weekday so be sure to check the board.

The 4 stars are for all of this and the great ambiance of this place.  The only thing it's lacking is quicker service.  I've sat and waited on drinks, food, and other things for quite some time here, and I'm guessing it's because they're constantly understaffed.  These girls work hard (with the exception of a few) but there just aren't enough of them.

I highly, highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to go have a beer, eat some great food and enjoy a game on one of their many HD TV's.

It happened, Yelp. I found what I think is my favorite burger in Texas. This is quite the way to ring in the celebration of new employment!

I had no designs on visiting The Tap Room; in fact, I'd never even heard of it. I received a telephone call from a San Antonio friend who wanted to meet half way for drinky times. Upon arrival, I was a little nervous. It has the presence of a divey college joint, but what they serve up is oh so special.

Hello, Chimay Blue. It's been far too long! The pièce de résistance was by far "The Works" burger. Handmade patties with sautéed mushrooms,  jalapeños, onions, and bacon on a potato bun. Need I say more? I substituted American cheese for pepper jack and I think this was a great decision. The fries were not the best I've ever had, but they were very good.  The service was adequate. I'll add in that this is a smoking establishment (I'd forgotten that those still exist!) so heads up if that's a deal breaker.

All in all, this place provided a great experience. I'm always on the hunt for a great burger. It's a pretty big honor to bestow, but they kicked the ass of any burger that Austin has served up to me to thus far.

I've lived near San Marcos pretty much majority of my life, and have to say that Tap Room is by far a staple to the Texas State crowd.

Great, If you love great pub burgers with much variety and AMAZINGLY sweet buns.

Great, if you love to try new beers, especially their beer mixing (Try the weiz-ace, trust me)

Great, if you are wanting to catch up with friends and a beer during happy hour.

5 stars for the atmosphere, (Although majority of the reviews here aren't fond of the cigarette-smell) &
5 stars for the food/beer and service!

I ate the HELL Burger at the Tap Room today for lunch with a few close friends.

(HELL, they were my close friends when we started.)

Think a 1/2 pound patty, two slices of jalapeno-jack cheese, covered in grilled onions, jalapenos and Tap Room's own hot wing sauce.  Then I added Tabasco sauce because I like to turn up the HELL fires.  Oh, and rings.  Deeeeeelicious onion rings.

(Flames shooting from mouth.  Ahh, just right.  Check?  HELL, they're still my friends.)

The burgers are terrific, famous, and are so very worth coming here for.  HELL YES!  +5 stars.

Waiting an hour for our food while other tables were seated, served, and got the HELL out of there before we even got our food?  HELL NO!.  -1 star

Leaving Tap Room reeking of the smoke from HELL because the air purifier has been doing a HELLuva job for years?  HELL NO!  -1 star.

Will I be back?  Sure.  I want to go through HELL again.  Maybe this trip can be at the end of the day, so I won't have to go back to HELL.  Then, sure as HELL, I can have a beer or two and see more stars.

    Now THAT would be...HEAVEN.

My favorite place in the whole wide world... except that is in San Marcos, Tx. I attended SWT, I refuse to conform to the name change, and would visit the Tap Room at least twice a week. Once on Thursday for $5 Beer and Burger, and once on the weekend for the normal beverage drinking activities. The burgers are the best around... ever, period.  The buns are sweet, like those of The Tavern on 12th in Austin. The meat is just has good and they please my palate by adding saute onions at your request. The fries are always hot and crispy with the perfect amount of seasoning.

The bar itself, it's somewhat a traditional looking bar. Hidden off the town square, it has wood paneled walls... i think... low lit... bar paraphernalia all over the walls... TV's in every corner... booths... cocktail tables...bar stools... and Golden Tee in the back, unless it's gone by now. The bartenders and wait staff are usually a bit unruly but when you consider they have to deal with inebriated college kids everyday, you too would be a bit pissy! I have had my fair share of altercations with the staff due to the company I kept but nothing ever got too out of hand and everyone usually brushed it off. But, this is the reason why i must give the Tap Room 4 stars instead of 5.

Let me remind you, this is located in a town with a super saturated population of college kids, so don't imagine anything other than what it really is... but if you are ever passing through at a decent hour and are hungry for a beer and burger, make the stop! It's worth it!

My party of nine rolled in at about 7pm on a Monday after an afternoon of tubing on the river. Tap Room was recommended to us by a local, and at first, we definitely got the feeling that everyone there was a regular, and they were giving us cold looks. Seat yourself -- if you ask anyone for help, you'll get a rather short "What you see is what you get."

Despite the negative vibes at first, it didn't take long for me to realize why it seemed to be a local hot spot. The atmosphere and decor is great, the beer selection is immense, and at least compared to what you get up the road in Austin, the prices and food were exceptional.  I made out paying about $13 before tip for a delicious 1/2 pound queso guacamole burger, decent wedge fries, and 24 oz. of some beer I had never heard of, but wanted to try. =)

The Good: Burgers are large and delicious, with a variety of interesting taste variations. (The Hell Burger is my favorite!) The rolls on which they're served are sweet and yeasty, and are a key part of the experience. Their fries are well-seasoned, wedge cut delights, properly cooked at high temperatures so they're crispy without excess oil. The cheesesteaks are also very tasty. And, of course, the biggest selection of beers in San Marcos is a big plus. The servers are friendly and attentive.

The Bad: Nearly always quite noisy, often somewhat smoky. Much of the seating is stools with no backs, which can get uncomfortable after a bit. But if you're a fan of burgers or beer, these caveats are far outweighed by the good aspects of the place.

The burgers are tasty - and I'm not even a big burger eater.

    The beer selection is phenomenal!

My favorite beer is the Sunny Ace - It's a combo of cider/beer.  Though not on the menu anymore, you can ask for it and they'll know what your talking about.

The only downside is that it's a bit smoky in there and it's always crowded! Nevertheless, it's a great place to start a great night out, or end a rough day.  I've taken many a friend from out of town to Tap Room to all their delights.

Bad ass burgers and almost every beer known to man, what more could you ask for? Maybe high def t.v.s everywhere? Check. Good looking womens? Check. Come for the food, stay for the beer. If you frequent enough, maybe you can complete their around the world challenge...

    Highly Recommended.

Just to clarify my name is on the wall. I did drink all the beers. Took me a long time but i did it.

For me the Tap Room is the best dark loungy pub grub place a guy could dream of. They have a huge list of beers from around the world and most of them are on tap. The burgers are huge and could easily be halfed with your date. Unless your eating with a dude in which case you should man up whimp and get the hell burger.

My go to beer:  Rio Blanco (local fav).
My fav beer: Chimay Blue but its a meal in a bottle and should be saved for special times.
My hated beer: Something like FoSchnitzel and its served with a slice of lemon.

Have Fun and live long Tap Room.

OOoo Tap Room!! How I miss you!!!!!

I attended school at SWT, now known as TxState...but not to me.  This weekend I and a group of other former Bobcats were returning from a trip to San Antonio and decided to stop and grab a bite...just for old time's sake.

I think we all cried a little when we bit into our burgers. We had almost forgotten how good the Tap Room is.

The buns are what make the burgers. They taste like sweet hawaiin bread rolls. Which is a great contrast to the saltiness of the queso burger.  The wedge fries are pretty salty too...but I think this is all in an effort to make you order another drink!

Speaking of drinks, the Tap Room has over 50 beers on tap. Very similar to the Flying Saucer in that if you have a certain amount of different beers, you get a plaque with your name and quote thrown on the wall.
But the prices and food here is better.
But it's not just beer, you can also get liquor as well. I suggest a Scooby Snack. Cannot remember off the top of my head what's in it, but it's quite tasty!!

Few things to keep in mind when going to the Tap Room:
Parking- Be very careful and very aware of your parking spot. If there is a "will tow" sign around...you will get towed. San Marcos is very tow happy, so just make sure to park in a spot that is Tap Room friendly.
Crowd- Lunch and early dinner, not a problem. Trying to get in after 8:30ish...good luck! It gets extremely crowded at night and I think the kitchen closes at 10 or 11.

I'm a little upset that I didn't see the fried mac and cheese on the menu...are they not making that anymore or did I just over look it? That was some good stuff too!!

Shitty service but the greatest selection of beers on tap and the best bar food in this stinkin town. They also allow smoking which sucks. They really just need to staff more people and this place would rule.

The Tap Room is home to my favorite burger- The guacamole queso burger! It's super messy and oh so delicious. The potato bun that they use on all of the burgers really adds to the flavors. Every time I go my friend always orders the ribs and swears they are some of the best he has ever had.
The beer selection is awesome though it can be a little pricey for a college budget.

The only reason this place does not get 5 stars is because the service is ALWAYS lack-luster and the smoke can get to e a bit much when it's crowded.

Upside: great burgers and other fried fare, and good selection of beers.

    Downside: Small, crowded.

Let's start with the good things because it is raining and I am feeling optimistic today.  The burgers are good, not great, not spectacular, but a solid burger that will fill your stomach provided proper mastication preceded the shoving of it down your throat.  The jalapeno burger (can't remember the name) with jack cheese is the way to go.  Sufficient heat to tint your earlobes red, but not so much that it flushes your face (giving you that embarrassed look you don't need after accidentally [out of the tiniest corner of your eye] seeing a thong on some co-ed).  The fries are tasty if not the slightest bit bland, and they have to be ordered separately.

The best thing about the tap room is the beer selection.  It is broad (vast like the great Siberian forests of the Motherland) enough to make you ponder for a good 5 minutes, whilst annoying the bartender with your inability to make a decision.  Lucky for him there are abundant thongs to peruse while the indecisive consider their next beer.

Having lived in Austin a while I have become used to the smoking ban. As such, I can't stand the smell of this place, and if you are unlucky enough to grab one of the few seats left that is next to cigar guy you can kiss tasting anything other than ash the rest of the night. Which brings me to the second negative. It is always crowded. It is always I-took-15-minutes-to-park-this-enormous-truck-some where-close-and-now-I-have-to-sit-next-to-cigar-di ckbro-crowded.

Bring a book to read because people look at you funny when you are *gasp* reading.

    Thongs.

    Enthusiastic staff. Terrific veggie basket.

    The bread is MIND-SWELTERING.

AND THE RIBS. THE RIBS. 100% DIVINE.

The new back room is AN EXCELLENT ADDITION.

I still can't figure out how they cook those ribs. THEY ARE THE BEST.
