I came here for my roommate's birthday and it blew me away.  First, the place is underground, which I always think is cool.  Inside, it is small and cozy, good for smaller groups or a date.   They had a good (and affordable) collection of wines.  And the service was very friendly and personal, though our waitress seemed very shy.

However, the highlight was definitely the food itself.  First we got their prosciutto special, which was good, but nothing to write home about.  However, their pasta was a different story. They make fresh, homemade, pasta, and the different between dry pre-made pasta is unmistakable.   Plus, they allow you to match up whatever pasta you want to whatever sauce you want, instead of having to go with whatever combination the restaurant decides on.  I got the fettuccini with bolognaise sauce.   Two of my friends got the gnocchi, one with pesto and one with alfredo sauce, and two got the cheese ravioli, both with the vodka sauce.  We all tried everyone's and while everything was delicious, the ravioli in the vodka sauce stood above the rest.  The portions were also very fair, where we all had enough to eat but the plates weren't so full that you ended up stuffing your face and not making a dent.

Since it was a birthday we ended up bringing cupcakes from crumbs as our dessert, but their dessert looked really good and is probably worth trying.  Great place for a special occasion!

It is a delight. How could you say no to good food, a nice atmosphere and reasonable prices especially in NYC? If you are walking too fast down the street you may miss the place.

Try the hazelnut espresso dessert.

I come here so frequently the host knows me. It is very warming when they remember what your favorite dish is.
Today because I had a tad too much wine, I ordered dessert (I haven't ordered dessert with dinner in a long time.)  He suggested the mousse and it was like my mouth had an orgasm. WHIPPED and RICH and so chocolaty.

Went here again recently and had a sub-par experience.  Maybe it was because it was a Sunday in August, but the food and the service were not as good as I remembered.  The meatballs tasted as if they had been frozen and recently warmed up and the pasta/pasta sauce did not taste super fresh.   I've had several good experiences here in the past so I don't want to give up on it yet, but I will deduct a star and say if you go, hope for the best.

Definitely a great decor at this place.  We came here when it was packed, so we were sat in the basement.

They had jazz playing the next room with the bar, so I would have given this place 4 stars if the bitchy waitress told me I couldn't stand around to listen to them because my table was in the other room.

We had the dessert.  Although the selection was not bad, the gelato was a bit mediocre for my taste.

It's a solid 3.5, but I'm not 'bout to round up for it.

The basement isn't quite a dungeon, but I was expecting it to be cuter based on the previous reviews. It's charming in a it's-new-york!-we're cramped-in-and-it's-fun-and-quaint sort of way. The waitress was perfectly nice, but I had trouble hearing her. She was just quiet-ish and it was a little awkward as a result. The food & drink was fine, but as someone who likes to eat, I'd like a slightly bigger pasta portion. The small bowl it was served in was deceiving, and it did have a little more than expected, but I still found the size to be slightly disproportionate to the price.

Don't be afraid to bring out the big guns Tanti Baci. We're big kids. We can handle ourselves. The penne was cooked well, to be fair, but yeah.

I liked Tanti Baci fine, but I didn't think it was exceptional. I have no problem going, but I wouldn't go out of my way really.

If you like freshly made pasta, then this is definitely your spot. Its a very simple menu you pick your homemade pasta, and pick your sauce. I'm generally a fan of this formula at Italian places since I usually ask for a combination thats off the menu (gnocchi with pesto anyone?). Hands down the cheese ravioli in the vodka sauce was one of the best I've had.
Ambiance is nice, nothing fancy, just simple and cute.

For Valentines day I really liked that they were one of the few places that didn't have a prix fix deal, just a special menu which was absolutely delish. Really anything you ordered was great. We actually got a chance to eat that their "flower room" with is around the corner on 7th ave. It was very intimate and expressed the same sort of simplicity that the main room has. Service is also excellent. One thing I remember from my first visit though, if you bring your own cakes for birthdays they will charge a fee per person.  So save yourself the hassle and just eat their yummy tiramisu instead.

A friend picked this place for girls dinner and I was pleasantly surprised.
Tucked away in wonderful West Village, this little Italian cafe is a true find.
After having dined here, we've declared it our new go-to restaurant.

Located in the basement down some cement stairs- one shouldn't be fooled because this restaurant is neither parts seedy nor dirty.

We were seated in an inside room, proving to be all kinds of cozy.
Coral and brick walls, big dresser mirrors and cheesy white lights.
Very Alice in Wonderland-ish.
The 7-feet-tall waiter only contributed further to the overall rabbit-hole feel.
And as expected, the food was great!
Very homey and the portions were perfect.
People said they were on the small side but don't be fooled by the small plates, the portions are filling without boasting an ounce of ostentatiousness.
Among the five of us we all tried something different- the Puttanesca, Penne Alla Vodka, Home-made Lasagna, Linguine with Vongole and a creamy spiral pasta with Italian sausages.

They also have customizing options (pick your own sauce, noodles, toppings, sides) but as cool as the idea sounded, honestly speaking it was just too much thinking for me.

They had wonderful bruschetta- soft, chewy bread loaded with fresh tomatoes. Their balsamic vinegar tasted tangy and very well aged.
and the dish came with large, flavorful kalamata olives.

We shared a tiramisu for dessert and if I said it lived up to anything less than what the waiter promised,...well then I'd be lying.

It seems like a great place for group gatherings and I would definitely come back.

...And any place that translates to "Many Kisses" (Tanti Baci)... certainly deserves many, many revisits in my book. :)

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised by both the decor and the food of this restaurant. My boyfriend brought me here, and at first, as he led me down the narrow, cold metal stairs to go to the restaurant, I was thinking... where's he taking me? a dinky basement?! Nope, it wasn't like that at all. The restaurant was cozy and romantic inside. The walls were decorated with warm colors, each table had a vase with fresh flowers, and the waiter brought us water in wine bottles.

Anyway, I ordered the fettuccine with bolognese sauce, and also tried the meat ravioli with vodka sauce and they were both delicious! (But if I had to pick, I preferred the vodka sauce) You can definitely tell their pasta is fresh and homemade. The portion size is good and the price is reasonable.

It's a great place to start off a romantic evening :-)

Small and cozy in the west village, this would be a nice place for a date.

I sat downstairs in their back room which has five to six tables.  To start I ordered the bruschetta and it was quite flavorful.  For the main course I had fettucine with veal.  The pasta was delicious, but the meat in this dish had a weird taste.  Perhaps it had to do with how it was served, chunks mixed in with the pasta.

While it was cute and the food was pretty good, something just didn't do it for me here.

I'm a sucker for little tucked away places in the West Vil, so I had high hopes for Tanti Baci. Maybe it's because I envisioned something a bit more dimly lit and romantic (think cavernous basement lair), but there was just something lacking about this place. I mean, the food was good (but not exceptional--save the tiramisu, which really was divine), and the service was solid (nice, attentive)...but throughout the meal, I couldn't help but feel like this was one of those "I just graduated from college and this is my first attempt at eating at a nice place" kind of place.

And you know what? Just as we were settling the bill, a couple walked in--and, no joke, he was wearing his college sweats and flip flops. Oh, how furiously my head shook.

Anyway, moral of the story, if you're looking for a casual (but not Buca di Beppo casual) place, then this is a green light. Just, please, don't wear your Greek letters.

After reading Lianne's review, I tried this for a girl's night out as well.  It's a great neighborhood place and if I lived near there I'd probably order delivery from them all the time.  Oddly tucked away downstairs, it's a cozy space with tables for two on one side and four on the other.  It's nice for a casual date or get together but small and informal.  The entire time we were there the phone was ringing and deliveries were going out, so I assume most people either think the same or just didn't feel like being out in the cold.

I chose it because I liked the idea of the mix-and-match pasta.  My friend had the vodka sauce with (I think) a tortellini and said it was lovely.  I had one of the daily specials - a bucatini with the pesto sauce, grilled shrimp and leeks.  The bucatini was perfectly al dente and I was pleasantly surprised that they'd added a touch of lemon to the pesto that complimented the shrimp but found the leeks a bit overpowering.  Eating around them seemed just right.  The house wines by the glass were fine (she had chardonnay, I had pinot grigio - we both were ok with them).  We split the chocolate fondant cake - yum!

I will say I wasn't crazy about the service we received as we were one of a couple people eating there but I eventually had to get up and ask for the check.  Still the waitress was friendly and I don't have any other real complaints.  I recommend either ordering for delivery (use the web site for the daily specials) or for a casual impromptu dinner in the neighborhood.  I'd definitely go again.

ate here last night with my wife. This was the 2nd time we've eaten here but first time eating inside (they have sidewalk cafe seating in summer)  The inside is definitely homey as you go down below street level.  Both times the food was excellent. Homemade pasta was delicious. My wife had the whole wheat fettucini with bolognese (honestly one of the best we've ever had)   I had their penne special w/ italian sausage, shallots, red wine and cream sauce, it was delicious as well.  My one gripe is that it was freezing in the restaurant. My seat was next to an unused door that led to the outside and the draft was pretty strong.  Noticed some other tables had similar problems at their seats.
This is the reason I gave it 4/5 stars but def shouldn't keep you from trying Tanti Baci, the food def makes up for it!

Tanti Baci is a very small basement eatery that specializes in pasta, and does a very good job with both limited space and a limited menu.

Date and I met up with another couple; we all remarked that the space seems a whole lot smaller than what's on their website. The photography geek among the four of us commented upon their use of a fisheye lens to make it seem so much more spacious in their photos. Nonetheless, none of us felt cramped nor crowded, and the noise level allowed for polite conversation.

Service was exceptionally attentive, but not intrusive. Pear salad and calamari appetizers were very satisfying. We all opted for pasta and a range of sauces (the menu style is mix-and-match - pick a pasta, pick a sauce); I highly recommend the linguine integrale (whole wheat pasta) with the pomodoro - the home-made quality of both proved to be a superb combination. My side order of meatballs was exceptional, as was the side order of chicken that another of our party opted for.

Despite other reviews that mention "anorexic" portions, no one walked away hungry - a half appetizer, a pasta and a side dish should absolutely be enough for all but the hardiest eaters. In fact, we were all too full for the desserts.

Price for five drinks, four pastas, three side dishes, and two appetizers was $140. Server was happy to split the check between two credit cards, in keeping with his excellent service.

Oh, and everyone that's voting for "Good for Kids" - no, it isn't. The space is way too small, the basement location could prove frightening,  and one screaming child will absolutely ruin the ambiance for a restaurant full of people. Leave them home, OK?

My hubby and I couldn't wait to go out on our first night in Manhattan after reading rave reviews of Tanti.  Loved the intimate mood they provided in the basement and the friendly service from the waiter and the hostess.  Wines by the glass (pinot grigio and Chianti) were good.

But the fresh fettucine was overwhelmingly disappointing.  It was served with one big clump and it was impossible to extract one strand by itself.  It tasted fresh but just sticky and clumpy.  With so many restaurant choices, I just won't risk going back.

really cute place and i could have sworn i wrote a review for this place already... grrr...

the homemade pastas are the best but they come with set sauces that can go with it which kinda sucked cuz i was really adament bout getting a creamier sauce... the homemade pastas went well with just the tomatoey sauces...  wouldn't come back here tho cuz i feel there are plenty of other italian places to try!

pretty quiet and easy to get reservations here... even for a party of 10... person taking our order wasn't very helpful but we made due...

YUM. Fresh homemade pasta and your choice of any sauce imaginable!! Ok...maybe that's a stretch, but there are more than enough options for every palate.

Great date spot!! The outdoor seating is a squeeze but well worth it and perfect for that accidental graze of the thigh...I mean if that's what you're going for...I'm going to recommend 2nd date though, so we can assume you're interested/comfortable enough to knock knees and have your not-as-awkward-as-the-first-date conversation heard by the couple next to you.

Like a few others, I stumbled upon this place walking home and what a GREAT find. Very reasonable pricing and delicious, delicious food. I will DEFINITELY be going back to try some of the other menu items reviewers mentioned and of course to take advantage of the wine list!

it was pretty damn cold night, and my dear friend, he was singing about Tiramisu from Tanti Baci too much, already got a headache...  OK! OK!! ENOUGH!!!

it is a tiny, cozy, and cute Italian restaurant...  there're only 4~5 tables, and a waiter could barely walk through between tables...  it made this place more romantic and sexier...  dark room...  small candles...  fragrant rose...  orphic canzone...  stimulate wine...

we started with seafood + potato salad, it was fresh but little bit creamy, Seafood Ravioli, could feel the Mediterranean Sea in my mouth, Fettuccine Alfredo, couldn't be better, strange Meatball side...  everything was well homemade and ideal, not too much over palatable or unsavory...  loved pastas, meatball yet...  Finally, time to Homemade Signature Tiramisu...  it was unbelievably amazing...  very soft, light, tasty, flavorous and mouth meltable...

it was the day...  damn cold night...

now, I am dreaming about TIRAMISU badly like my friend did...

Basement Dining at it's Finest!

O.K. so Time Out Magazine was right....it is a little scruffy....but the cuisine makes up for it; it's kinda cute in it's own scruffy sorta way.....

This is what I'd call the Inexpensive Version of Babbo's with Wendy the chef at the helm.

Call and make your reservation with the friendly Marina and let your Spanish waitress Esther bring you some fantastic Italian dishes.

Not a very good wine menu... we had the pinot noir...it was fine. The Polpette Meatball appetizer was yummy and Wendy made this egg ravioli that was uniquely incredible. I've never had anything like it, but would definitely have it again.

The specials are fantastic. We had a succulent chicken with a white bean-rosemary ragu and incredible roasted carrots...I never knew carrots could taste so sweet! We also had pappardella with a bolognese sauce that was very good.

The menu gives you a choice of choosing any home made pasta to pair with several different sauces that you can pick and choose. I  almost felt like I was at home, without having to clean up the mess afterward.

Go ahead...give it a try!

UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE ***

yup, i wrote about this a few months ago after stumbling in by accident and having a super dessert experience.

then went back intentionally the night of the big snow and was turned away -- no dessert-only seating! no matter how empty we are! back into the snow, you snowmonkeys!!

the story could have ended there. but how can you argue with...cuteness????

the restaurant is so small, it just feels like it wants you to like it, tucked away around the back of a ... piazza on seventh avenue???

so we went for dinner. IT WAS GREAT. UNBELIEVABLE. YIKES. PERFECT.

italian, homemade, carefully prepared, delicious everything. good chianti. mouthwatering pastas and sauces. meatballs. some kind of slightly crazy salad starter. delectable. and the tiramisu returned to put us to bed.

what a way to go.

you have to try this place. got to. got to. got to. got to.

(below is the original review from december)

After a dinner at the Flea Market Cafe, things were starting to feel claustrophobic and we needed to get out of that intense atmosphere. I remembered a great dessert place on the west side near waverly so we fled across town looking for Rafaella's. it was boarded up -- out of business! -- and of course it started raining then. that's when you get that hopeless feeling in ny, like standing at the base of a mountain. standing there on seventh avenue at 11 at night with friends from out of town, i noticed a little 'plaza,' if you could call it that, across the avenue in the middle of the block. what the hell. i ran over and in and around the side where there was a step and an old door. inside was a tiny 4-table (maybe 6?) caffe, and when i asked if we could come in and have coffee and dessert the guy said sure.

it turned out great. it was late and some things were already sold out but there was still homemade tiramisu, a chocolate mousse with cream and apricot preserves, a pumpkin cheesecake, you see what i mean. tiramisu has been done to death, but here it was fresh and perfect, with good coffees too. on the regular menu were pastas, meatballs, simple stuff all homemade, which will have to wait for another time. the vibe is plain unpretentious and simple. and intimate.

there were probably hundreds of places like this around here at one time, but now they are rare and hard to find. this one is an undiscovered gem.

Had a dinner here with a group of friends. The service was wonderful, the place is cozy and quaint, the food is really good. A perfect date place. We went for a holiday party so the strings of lights and other decorations really set the mood.

The fried calamari was rubbery, but the Rinforzi Braciole and tiramisu was great. Highly recommended.

As mentioned by the previous reviewers, this place is really hard to find. Unless you're looking for it, the chances are you won't notice it. It's in a small basement under a shop, and there aren't any big signs or lights to let you know that a very nice Italian restaurant is hiding there.

Dinner at Tanti Baci was great: they have a pretty large selection of pasta dishes, as well as a few meat entrees. The pasta is fresh (and you can really taste it), as are all of the other ingredients. I had spinach linguine with a spicy tomato sauce with anchovies and olives, and it was great. They have a good selection of Italian wines, and I really wish I could have stayed to try one of their desserts (that tiramisu sounded pretty damn good!). Service was very friendly and efficient, and prices are reasonable, so I'll definitely eat there again. The place is really small, so it's a good idea to make a reservation if you have a big party.

Delicious. Homemade pasta. Romantic. Not much else I want for my birthday dinner. This was picked out by my boyfriend as the restaurant for birthday and he did an excellent job! I told him for once I wanted no part of the picking, I wanted him to found a place on his own and take me there for my birthday, no limits, any cuisine. And he chose this gem.

Bruschetta to start, a little too much garlic but the tomatoes, basil and olive oil were fresh and yummy. For my main I had the fresh linguine with a putanesca sauce made the traditional way with very finely minced anchovies, which was delish. Boyfriend had spinach raviolis, also homemade, with a butter sauce with spinach. he doesn't usually like spinach and he ate everything on his plate. Homemade tiramisu was yummy.

Only complaint. The wine wasn't chilled like it should have been. But I can be a wine snob at times, so don't listen to everything I say :).

I  give it 4.5 stars.

Warning: bring gum. Lots of garlic used in their food.

You have to be looking for this place to find it.   I sincerely doubt anyone stumbles on it, with its narrow stairway and hand-chalked since being the only nods to the outside world.  When I walked in I wasn't sure if I was smug in my knowledge of the place, or a little scared by how few people were in there.

It's definitely cozy, but not in that NY Apartment Broker way.  There's plenty of space, and I could see how this would be romantic (though sharing a restaurant with just the staff and delivery boys is a little disconcerting to me!).  The food was fantastic, though.  I'd been jonesing for some homemade pasta, but needed it at non-Babo prices.  Yelpers led me to here, and I must say, it did not disappoint.  They managed to make wheat linguine taste fantastic, and their Puttanesca sauce was incredible!  The wine was fairly priced and good.

I'll probably return for the tasty homemade pasta, but I'd be more likely to get delivery (they seemed to have a bustling delivery service).  One more reason to move up to the West Village!

The cutest nook of an Italian restaurant serving an array of delicious fresh pasta (various dry varieties also available) with your choice of a range of sauces. Meatballs are tasty. Wine reasonably priced.

At the 7th Ave South entrance (near Charles St) -- the cafe?, you can either dine at one of a handful of outdoor tables, or else inside a petite adjacent dining room. There's a W 10th St entrance around the corner, which leads to a dining room in the basement (and it smells like basement).

I am a pasta nut so I like this place pretty much automatically. Would be a charming date spot.

I had a marvelous time here sipping wine on a thunderstormy summer night.  I know...it sounds good, right?  Good and cheesy, but moreso - cheesy in a good way.

I mean, stormy night...wine...pasta...it's hard to beat.  And I'm not exaggerating either - the rain was loud.  I went with one of my very favorite friends, but for a first date you can't go wrong either.

NY may have "better" Italian places, but I'm not sure there are that many that make you feel like this.  Or at least, I haven't found one.  And when you have something this good - you sort of stop looking.

This is just my most favoritest, favoritest, Italian restaurant in NYC.

I wouldn't even review it if no one else knew about it, because I really don't want it to become the next Magnolia Bakery and all you sum-bitches will overrun it so that I don't want to set foot in the place!

But some others have already pointed it out.  I might as well just face reality and give the rave reviews it deserves.

I've been going to Tanti Baci for a long time.  Maybe since the early 90s.  Can't remember my first time.

It's in the basement and easy to miss and it's a great date place.  Cozy, warm, womb like (if not a bit tomb like!).  Amazing bruschetta!  Al dente pasta and the sauce of your choosing.  What more can you want?  And at such a great price.

Sssh!  I'm going to come after all you mo' fo's if you start telling everyone and suddenly I can't walk in off the street and get a seat without waiting like I always do!  Word!

Came here on the recommendation of fellow yelpers and sadly, I was greatly disappointed...............

1pm on Sunday afternoon... I don't know why I chose this place over all dozens of other brunch spots in the West Village, but I did.... Me and my pops were the ONLY people here, other than the staff of course..........

The food was just blah.... The lunch menu is SERIOUSLY lacking, offering only a few appz and pasta only..... No Secondi type courses.... I had the rigatoni w/ bolognese..... Bland and boring... REALLY boring.... Bruschetta... Eh... Nothing special.... I make better bruschetta..... Homemade meatballs.... Blah....

The decor is so damn cheesy.... Maybe everyone usually comes here at night when the lights are turned down real low and they only have candles on the table.... But if you come here during the day... It's an eyesore.... Cheap fixtures.... The WORST paint job I've ever seen.... Just cheeeeeesy.....

BLAH.....
BLAH...
BLAH..........

Outstanding!  We came to NY on a Columbus Day weekend, under the most beautiful weather of the year, and with al fresco eateries sporting an hour wait. We were seated in their cozy patio by 7th Street, a bit noisy but very romantic, and enjoyed some amazing fare. We had a romaine, arugula and tomato salad and followed it by home made ravioli and a plate of frutti di mare with home made pasta. Sorry, but we had no room for dessert. I really, really liked the fact that with the restaurant being out of Pinot Noir, the manager sent away for it so I could have a glass. Total check was amazingly reasonable. What a treat!

I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of fellow Yelpers, actually, and it turned out to be a great choice.  It's a pretty small and modest place in the basement, where you have to go down the stairs and through a wee tunnel to get to the actual dining room.  I went in a group of four girlfriends, and we were all thinking that it would be a great place to go on a date.  The food is delicious, the atmosphere is nice, and the music is at the perfect volume where you can still have a conversation without shouting.  The waitress we had was very helpful at first, making a lot of recommendations and jokes (sort of), but then by the end of the night was ignoring us completely and neglecting our table.
Overall, though, this is a great place for dinner, especially if you're not in any hurry to leave at the end.

I was meeting an acquaintance here for dinner and was in the mood for something....non-asian.  Hence the brilliant idea of Tanti Baci Cafe which is hard to find but worth the looking.  The dishes are a bit slow to come to the table (at least it was for me) but delicious.  And the desserts were good too.  The food, very importantly, is made fresh and the ingredients compliment the pasta and each other well.  Just know that the space can be tight but on the night I went, there was only one other party in the room with us.  And heck, who cares about the space when you have good food and good company, right?

Terrible, horrible experience. Our waiter was an obnoxious queen (not that there's anything wrong with that lolz) who hardly paid us a care, maybe because I don't wear gold chains that guarantee a nice tip. I saw people come and go before we got our dinner.

After our mediocre appetizer, we waited, parched, for probably an hour. I've worked in a restaurant and I know shit happens, but you should apologize to the patrons if it does. You should ask them if they need anything and keep their glasses full.

Our entrees came and I was THRILLED to see about a half oz. of cheesy  spaghetti with a scroogy portion of tomato sauce poured over it and some eggplant thrown in. I guess this restaurant is for anorexics.

This is my favorite place for homemade pasta.  Although their menu is brief, as some posters have mentioned, what they do make, they make very well.  My favorite is the pesto sauce with homemade pasta.

The restaurant is in a cozy basement with an open kitchen with a perfect feeling for getting cozy with a date and a bottle of wine.

Absolutely love this place.... It's quaint, food's tasty, and a great location -- the perfect place to people-watch in the Village. The only con is that the outdoor area (and cafe itself) is pretty small... Be prepared to bump arms with surrounding tables. Actually, it's a good thing if you don't mind chatting up strangers.

Fun joint to check out during the summer.

Not a super nice place, a rather dingy basement, but with the addition of a few candle wax covered Chianti bottles might become charmng.    The food was very good, and service a little slow considering we were the only people in there on a Sunday evening.  I think one could easily find better Italian food in Manhattan, but for a neighborhood place not bad.

I love going here for the cute outdoor dining scene and the reasonably priced good food. The best bet--order the fresh homemade linguini with pomodoro sauce and a side order of meatballs. The meatballs are amazing. Another good bet is the bolognese sauce.

The tiny tables are so cute, and they are each decorated with a single rose inside a slim glass vase. With reasonably priced wine by the bottle, this is a nice date place as well.

a place so good and charming that you might not even notice that you're having a depressing last date with someone you love on 7th avenue, possibly facing a hospital.

besides that, the water comes in a 'rustic' 'wine bottle', so if close your eyes maybe you are drunk???????????????????
