I'm actually at this place at the moment, using Yelp to avoid working on a ridiculous paper that I am just not feeling. The wonders of free wi-fi! Makes procrastination even easier.

So far, of all the non-chain coffee places in my hood that I've tried out, this is my new fave. It's my first time here, and though it's a little crowded, I'm feeling it! It didn't take long for me to snag a spot on the couch next to an outlet and I like the overall vibe of this place a lot. Music isn't loud and the decor reminds me of a coffee shop up north. It just doesn't feel like LA, which is really, really nice for a change. I much prefer the vibe of this place to Venice Grind, at least when it comes to a place to hang and do work at.

Most importantly, their iced coffee doesn't suck! It had such a nice flavor that I didn't even hardly add anything to it. Most iced coffees are so bitter and/or flavorless that I have to add a shit ton of Splenda (gross, I know) and half and half to make it drinkable. I'm feeling this place for sure.

Since moving back to the West side, Tanner's has become my Go-To Wifi coffee shop for a day of quiet writing.  Cafe Milan is great too, but not for doing work.

The ownership has changed since my days as a Barista here, but then again after nearly 10 years, that's to be expected. Whoa...has it really been nearly a *decade* since my first job at this local joint? Guh.

I digress, as usual.

Tanner's is great in the afternoon, for those of us fortunate enough to work from home. I often plop on one of the leather couches and plunk away at the keys of my lap top.  An eclectic XM radio station, the ocean breeze and the smell of fresh espresso fill the air in this small, homey cafe.

Ian, a local from the area, is one of the nicest people! The employees all seem very nice and fun!

I recently moved back to the San Fernando Valley after living in Playa Del Rey for 3 years and aside from the beautiful coastal weather, Tanner's is probably what I miss THE most from that area.

Tanner's is literally a hop, skip, and a jump away from the beach and neighbors some other really great local establishments including Cafe Milan and Prince O'Whales!

They've got FREE Wi-Fi, great coffee, paninis, plenty of comfortable couches, quirky decor, a staff that is incredibly friendly and loves their customers, and a hilarious mix of PDR regulars ranging from your not-so-Sharky's-type LMU students to full suited bicyclists taking a break from their ride.

Check this place out after hitting up the Santa Monica Farmer's Market on Sunday morning to people watch or to 'work' on that paper due in a couple of hours. We all know that you're really just surfing Facebook!! But if you're serious about getting work done, this is definitely the place to do it. Just remember to bring your headphones.

Look out for their monthly BBQs, which are FREE! They've got your traditional hamburgers, some delicious Korean BBQ and other gourmet concoctions that you can enjoy while chatting it up with the cool staff and other regulars. Also, watch out for Colin's drinks but make sure you have a cup haha.

Don't miss out on PDR's best kept secret!!!

I wonder where that Dodger bobblehead came from?

love this place.   I usually don't have time to sit around as I am on my way into work.   I am not a big coffee drinker - like my teas, so when I stumbled upon them having FOUR different Chai's I was sold.   Thanks for thinking of us tea drinkers!

It's my first time here at Tanner's and I'm actually sitting in the place as  I write my review. After reading Mia T's review of the place, I decided to spend my afternoon here doing  a little bit of writing thanks to the fact that surf was completely blown out and my plans for the day were shot.  The free wifi is great. The  red leather couches are comfy, and the coffee is reasonably priced and tastes great. There's a parking lot out back and you can easily kill a few hours here if you bring your laptop or a book to read.

i much prefer the vibe of Tanner's to coffee chains.
it's unassuming, homey, friendly, and "beachy" too.
the selection of coffee and teas is solid.  *free wi-fi*

*** grab your dog (or laptop) and chill out sometime. ***

This is my favorite coffee shop in the world. I've lived in Playa del Rey for 12 years, and it's one of the reasons I never want to leave the neighborhood. I'm a simple guy when it comes to my coffee; medium drip, with just enough half and half to bring it to a brown paper bag color, no sugar. Tanners makes a great cup of Java, and never disappoints. Their beans are never burnt like their corporate cousins.

On top of great coffee, the atmosphere is second to none. This place is literally my second office. With free WiFi, I will leave work to head over, post up at a table with my laptop, and work a full day from the comfort of this wonderful coffee shop. My productivity goes up exponentially, even with the ocean air wafting in, and good looking people walking in and out.

The people who work here are the best. The have my orders memorized, and are always down for a quick morning chat which always brightens my trip to the office.

So much love for this joint.

it's a sweet spot. unpretentious. generous with it's free wi-fi, comfy couches to curl up and type away. lots of little tables to work at if that's ur preferred mode....good rich drinks -- for the non-dieter :)
I'd recommend the hot chocolate - lovingly made with soy milk and a generous dollop of whipped cream (the indulgence for the lactose intolerant! :) -- nice and rich, and a tad on the sweet side....
Also tried the vanilla chai -- which, I've confirmed for myself -- just isn't my cup 'o tea -- tho if you're a desert-y-chai person -- this is the drink for u - faril -- just that creamy, sweet, vanilla-ey drinks aren't really my thang...

Parking is easy on the street or the little lot next door .... and of course have the beach right around the corner is nothing to scoff at!

This place is about comfort, low-key-ness, wooden-y, earthy, old and dark-ish, organic-y, quiet place to chill out, read and get lots of work done....

sweet spot!

This is a great small coffee shop. Great customer service, and has that very local feel to it. I go in once every three weeks or so and they always remember me and my order. Great walking distance to the beach, so grab a coffee or latte and take a nice walk to the beach. Or you can always stay, sit in one of the couches and do a crossword puzzle.

Things to Try: Everything Bagel with cream cheese, iced vanilla latted non fat sugar free, and the Vanilla Chai is AWESOME and very reasonably priced.

I loooove their scones.

When my friend and I used to go to El Porto for surfing, we always stopped here to get scones.
I'm big fan of scone, so I tried many scones from many bakeries and coffee shops.
But Tanner's scone is the best.

I always felt embarrassed going there with my hair wet (cuz after surfing), but sometimes I saw some people in pajama&jacket .
I feel it really local and cozy.

I can't wait to go back there.
Now I don't know which is the reason to go to El Porto.
Surfing or Tanner's??

I walked into this place and thought ...

"This is exactly what MY coffee shop would be like"

I should say that I have no interest in owning a coffee shop, never have. I just liked it so much...I wanted to put it in my pocket.

This Tanner's is so cozy and friendly and just so GOOD.  It's exactly what my happy place is like, only it has wi-fi and less bacon.

I live up the street and Tanner's has become quite the morning treat for my girlfriend and I. Half of me loves this place because it's NOT Starbucks/Peets/Coffee Bean etc. You can order a cup of coffee (no bells and whistles for cheap cheap).
The staff are friendly and quirky. I love curling up on the couch with my laptop for hours there. Best drink: Soy Chai Iced Latte... its killer good.

Went to Tanner's last weekend for a cup-o-joe.  They have decent coffee, at least better than what I'm used to.  If you're wondering, I've taken a liking to Taster's Choice now that the recession has officially hit.

But really, I respect Tanner's because they represent the old school surfer vibe that has been lost in the commercial extravaganza we all know as the "South Bay."  Here you'll find old school Cali people just drinking a regular coffee and hanging out waiting for really nothing at all to happen on a Sunday morning.  In essence the anti-Starbucks.

I've lived in Playa del Rey for almost 20 years now, and Tanner's has always been my favorite coffee shop!

The Ice Blended Mochas are the best I've ever had, with a cloud of whipped cream and shavings of Ghiradelli chocolate on top! If you're going to go for the calories of an ice blended, go all the way!

But I'm usually there for the dark roast of the day and they have the best. If I need a bite to go with it, the scones can't be beat!

I love the recycling of coffee sleeves, and the coffee card (10th cup free).

It's just a great place to read the TImes while having a cup of coffee. How much better can it get?

Walking in and seeing the familiar 'hi!, the usual?' as you sit on a big floppy couch, prop your feet up and stare as the ice melts on your  ice coffee next to the crumbs of where once a most scrumptious Madeline lay are just details of what makes this coffee shop a  perfect 'Cheers' experience.

Familiar faces, old school fixtures, local artwork and walls that could use a fresh coat of paint give this quaint place an air of familiarity, as warm and fuzzy as that much appreciated cup of coffee right before that perfect word comes, a smiling friend walks through the door or moments before i take a sip and the flavors of coffee and lemon bring me back to the sound of "purple haze" in the background.

The floors are not pristine? so what. there is free wifi, plenty of great munchies, tons of power strips, amazing coffee and friendly energy to go around.

if you're not familiar with the area, the weird diagonal 5-way intersection might be confusing. but i guess the good part of that, is you get one more street to find parking on! tanner's is just a hop skip and a jump away from my house, so i've never driven, but there's always a few street spots out front.

this is truly a local coffee spot that isn't all uppity and snobby. the crowd ranges from old locals walking their dogs, tourists, hardcore bicyclists, beach bums, skater kids, and all the neighborhood yuppies. they make a great soy cappuccino, and that's all i'm really looking for on a lazy sunday morning.

i usually tend to ramble on and on, so i'll try'n keep this short....
Tanner's is easily the best coffee shop in the nearby area!!!  beats those impersonal, assembly-line places any day.... friendly staff, comfy seating (inside or out), some really cool old pics on the walls as well as some local art... and of course, best of all... the BUTTERFINGER MOCHA!!!!  this tasty coffee treat is worth the trip in here by itself!!!!  of course there are other yummy beverages to be had, but once you try the BF Mocha (hot or iced), you will never get anything else!!!

Definitely enjoyed my trip to Tanner's Coffee in Playa Del Rey.

The vibe here is great.  The staff seems to know and recognize their regulars.  Couches were comfy and this place definitely had the best chi latte I have ever had in Los Angeles.  It wasn't like Starbucks who adds water to their lattes.

I ordered my drink, had a seat on a comfy couch and read my book.  Lots of patrons were using their computers.  There are easily accessible power strips so there is no issue with having a power source.  Definitely worth a trip!!

There are just a few coffee shops in PDR - but this one is my fave... everything I love about a proper coffee shop:
-great drinks and ANY type you prefer (be it coffee, tea, frozen, non-caffeinated, juice, etc),
-chill coffee house atmosphere
-comfy chairs and couches
-super cool guys and gals behind the counter.

On top of all that, they have a huge case of baked goodies, fruit cups, granola bars... seriously they got you covered for your morning-intake needs!
I also highly enjoy the customer loyalty cards - get a punch for each drink and after 10 you get a free one! Honestly, it's something I truly value since really they don't have to give out any freebies and people will keep on coming. It's just an extra 'thanks' to the customers for continually coming back.

No, thank YOU Tanner's of PDR!

This is the coffee I shop I've actually dreamt about.  I moved away from L.A. almost two years ago and every time I go back, I make sure to visit Tanner's as often as possible.  The secret?  It's simple.

THEY HAVE REALLY DAMN GOOD COFFEE.

I know, I know ... it's a hard concept to grasp in these mocha-frappa-half caff-skim-soy-espressicino days, but seriously, these folks do coffee really, really well.  (You can also get fancier stuff, if that's you flavor.  Hey, I don't judge just cause I like to keep it simple.)

Let's here it for the eco-friendly coffee house!  I stepped in here this AM for a croissant and a coffee and I was pleasantly surprised.  The croissant was delicious and the coffee was bold.  Tanner's has a nice eclectic feel on the inside and a groovy and friendly bar staff.  Several comfy couches and tables/chairs scattered around give this store an overstuffed feel.  However, Tanner's really got me with three points:
1) The ask you to recycle your java sleeve!  Right near the door there is a can that asks you to deposit the burn-protector before you exit.  Other store owners, take note: Let's see more in-store recycling please!
2) Giant Ashtray in front of store to encourage smokers to put their butts in the can and avoid littering our beautiful world.
3) Free Wi-Fi!

I really was pleased with the recycling of the java sleeves.  Now if they would only get rid of those non-biodegradable plastic stirrers I'd be a really happy camper.

Wow! I just have to say that the flavored coffee here is to DIE FOR!!! It's sooo amazing! The prices are sort of okay, I guess they're comparable to Starbucks or any other coffee chain. Cool thing about here though is they have FREE WIRELESS and they don't care how long you sit there! There's comfy couches, chairs and tables for you to drink your coffee, enjoy a pastry and browse the internet or whatever.

They also have frozen yogurt that's like Pinkberry. I'm not a fan of Pinkberry to begin with but if that's your thing then Tanner's has it.
