One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Thank you soooo much, Linda! This was my very first visit to Tangerine: I didn't know what the salon was like, I didn't know my assigned stylist and I didn't come in with a huge hair game plan, other than I knew I wanted my long hair cut to medium length and something easy to manage. I heard about this place from my sister, who heard about it from a friend who is a regular of Sharyl.
I came in a little early to my Sat. afternoon appointment. I waited in their waiting area and noticed lots of things: huge Paul Mitchell product section; lots of fashion/hair magazines laid out (great!); lots of employees and stylists with really edgy, trendy hairstyles; and, it was busy and full of clientele in the salon - both guys and girls - which is always a good sign when going to a salon for the first time.
Linda approached me, sat me down in the chair, felt my hair and asked me what I wanted. I told her I wanted medium length and after that she could do whatever she thought worked best with my face shape. I did finally admit that I always wanted to try the thick bang look but with my face shape, ppl always tell me it's not a good idea. Plus, I've been burned with really badly done bangs before so I was super nervous. Linda said she could do the bangs and make it look good. I was apprehensive at first, but Linda was so confident about it, I let her have at it. I was looking for a completely different look anyways and Linda supported me. She was very reassuring and, after the first bang cut, she kept telling me it would look really cute when she was done. After about 40 minutes, she was right, it looked awesome! I had an idea of what I wanted and Linda brought it out and made it look better than I had imagined!
For $55, I was satisfied and impressed with the quality of the salon, the expertise and confidence of my stylist Linda, and, of course, my final results. I used to go to Faux (in Campbell) but now I've found Linda at Tangerine. I'm definitely coming back! Another thing, Tangerine carries Paul Mitchell products but they did not product-pressure me hard, unlike many other salons. Also, their front desk was welcoming and they take credit card. Faux only takes cash.
Cyndi has been doing my hair for.... ever since Tangerine opened.
She ALWAYS makes me feel like my hair looks amazing before I leave. I've also had my hair colored/permed by other associates. They all do a great job.
The prices are reasonable and I think they have specials every now and then, too.
I've been getting a body wave perm for 4 or 5 years now!
I HIGHLY recommend coming here if you are looking for a new salon to go to. You will get a relaxing scalp massage when they wash your hair.
I like the layout of this salon, but my haircut was okay. I guess its because my hair type is a bit different, but it felt like I didn't really get a haircut.
The service was good, I got taken care of really well. My hair stylist was Cheryl and she was really friendly. She didn't make things awkward at all and I felt really comfortable around her. I got a trim from her but my hair didn't feel like I got a haircut at all. My hair was still heavy and thick and not layered like how I wanted.
I got good tips on how to style and care for my hair, and the price was pretty cheap.
I probably would not come back here again.
I've already had my hair cut here twice, and each time, I've felt like I was well taken-care of and that my hair has come out better than I had expected. Linda was my stylist both times, and she was very sweet and attentive. She actually cut my hair a little differently the second time because she had noticed the first cut grew out in a certain awkward way, so she compensated for that. Wow!
It's so refreshing having your hair cut by 1) someone who knows Asian hair, and 2) someone who has a decent sense of style. $45 is a little more expensive than some hole-in-the-wall salon of course, but I think it's worth it, given that it includes a wash, and that they're really careful not to get hair all over your collar, and that you look awesome and ready to go for the rest of the day. I don't have to go home and change after a hair cut anymore!
I'd give them five stars, but I have to admit that the cut that I wanted wasn't too challenging. I have no qualms about recommending them though!
I'm a guy...so I haven't been to many salons/hair studios? I remember growing up (poor!) and my mums taking me to beauty schools to get $3 haircuts! Yes, sad...especially after all those misaligned haircuts or slight nips in the ears.
Fast forward to the fact that I'm a yuppie now (not afraid to admit it)...I like to take care of myself and look good. Not for you, or anyone else...but myself. Yes, pamper myself. Just being real and if anyone says they don't like to look good in their own eyes is lying. Even the tech support guy you deal with everyday looks good to himself with his pocket protector (note: looking good is very subjective and a matter of personal opinion and style)

I digress..sorry. I've been going to Tangerine for a little over a year now. And I will continue to do so even since I've moved up to SF recently. I go to Charyl..that's my girl! She's awesome - totally down to earth, really fun to talk to and can relate to just about everyone. I can totally tell her and her fellow stylists (was going to say colleagues?) love, love, love their jobs. Which is where you want to go anyways!
Everyone is professional, but keeps it casual if necessary. I've been late several times and they're very accommodating as long as you let them know beforehand. The only problem is that I can never get my hair to look so cool again after Charyl styles it! She claims it's because she has two hands and has full control of my hair in the sense that she sees 360 degrees. Probably saying it to make me feel better. :)
Anyhow, if you go...ask for Charyl! Let her know Kreisler sent you..she'll know what's up. trust.
I go my hair cut here by Kellie and am very pleased with the results. Instead of the usual "how you like it" it was more like a discussion of how every part of the hair should be. Careful attention was paid to make sure I will be happy with certain features of the cut like around the years or bangs too short etc.
Usually cuts may look good at the salon but after you try to style it yourself it just turns into mush. After a wash, I am still please with the results. I will certainly come here again since it's so conveniently close to me.
I've often said that the "easy breezy look" of side swept bangs are neither easy nor breezy. In fact, they're just darn high maintenance for a person like me who has thick-straight hair.
With that said, I was in desperate need for a bangs trim and couldn't wait for an appointment with my usual stylist. Since I pass Tangerine almost everyday on my way into work, I thought I would give them a try during my lunch break.
I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and offered a drink by both her and the stylist. My stylist, Linda, was nice and had a great funky style to her. Even though she had me in and out within 10 minutes---she took her time with my bangs and I appreciated it.
Why only 3 stars? Heck, it was only my bangs afterall that were getting trimmed. But don't worry, I'll update their review if I come back for a full cut and dry.
i came here on my 21st bday to get manicure. they have a 20% discount for first time nail clients so it worked out for me! the nail artist was lovely and it was such a great experience.
I came three weeks later to get my hair cut because my nail technician told me about "Walk In Wednesdays." Everything is 1/2 off!
I got a $17.50 wash, condition, cut, blow dry and style. HEAVEN! since I got such a great discount, i tipped my girl pretty good. plus she got me out in time for my class. The only thing, I came and signed in my name at 12:15p. I didn't get my hair cut until 3:15p. Expect a wait since people are going gaga about this walk-in thing. And for good reason!
Try Tangerine!!!
I found about this place from a yelp reviewer, Mimi C. when I asked about where I could go to get a good dye job for my hair. This place sounded like one of the best so I called Linh to get an appointment just for a consultation. Today he had a last minute cancellation so he said he could take me. I needed a haircut anyways so said yes.
This place is hard to find. It's located inside a shopping area. There is a large parking structure near by so at least I was able to find a parking spot which was great since parking is usually tough to find in downtown San Jose.
Linh was very honest with me about how my hair was too dry to color. I was disappointed at first but agreed to a haircut. I like my current stylist, but she tends to do more conservative cuts and I wanted to try something different this time. Linh is cool and easy to talk to. He dry cut my hair and styled it nicely. I got a long layered cut. The style I had done was my idea. I showed him a pic of me wearing this wig that I really liked. lol. I was just goofing around one time with a friend and she took some pics of me posing in it.
Although the final cut didn't look exactly like the way it did in my pic, it still turned out good. It has more body and looks healthier now. He recommended used some Paul Mitchell wax spray on my hair that is like hair spray but not as sticky. It holds better IMHO without the sticky look. Also, he recommended some Paul Mitchell shampoo & conditioner to me that was only $26.00 for two large bottles. He didn't try to push any products on me like some hair stylists try to do which is nice-:)
I got the Paul Mitchell spray wax too for $20.00. I paid $55.00 for the haircut. It's ten dollars more than what I'm used to paying for. The salon is nice and clean. He works Tuesdays to Saturdays. His cell number is: (408) 679-5175
He is friendly and actually listens to you like a friend would. There wasn't any awkwardness with him. We got around to talking about Halloween somehow and he showed me a pic of him dressed up as Edward Scissorhands, lol. He said he made his own shirt and his costume was really cool. I'll go back to him after my hair grows out for color as I heard rave reviews about how good he is with color. I'm sure I'll be coming back to see him again in a month. He's awesome!
Oh, I almost forgot, they validate for parking. I forgot about that and after I left, he said, Sandy, wait. I went back and he gave me a few validation stickers. That was really nice of him-:) If he didn't do that, I probably would've had to pay close to ten dollars for parking. It's not cheap to park in S.J. This is a great place!
I have been going to Cyndi for years now. She is the ONLY person that I would ever go to for a cut and color. She always does a GREAT job. I always get so many compliments on my hair, and people are constantly asking me where I get my hair done. Now, all seven of my sisters get their hair done by Cyndi...Oh and even my mom and grandma go to Cyndi as well!!! Did I mention that my little niece and nephews also go there...Haha... Basically, she is the greatest. She is also always very nice and helpful. You should totally give her a try. You won't regret it!
P.s. My boyfriend is going to give Cyndi a try next week as well! :)
I wanted to go for a drastic change, so I decided to chop off my long hair and go for a short bob. I decided to try out Tangerine for the first time. I'm very picky when it comes to my hair, and I had doubts that even though my stylist is a senior stylist, she wouldn't cut my hair the way I wanted it.
Boy was I WRONG! Irene is a senior stylist, and she got my hair on point! I showed her a picture of how I wanted my hair, and she cut my hair just like I wanted it with a mix of her own style. I didn't have to direct her in what needs to be cut or anything. So if you ever decide to try out Tangerine for the first time, I suggest you drop a little extra money and get a senior stylist. $45 for a wash, cut, and style is pretty damn good compared to other salons I've been to. I liked Irene as my stylist, and I do plan on going back to her again.
I LOVE my new haircut!!!! I brought in a picture and my hair came out the same and it looks awesome. Charyl cut it and used really cool products on my hair, dried it and styled it all for 45 (+ tip). I went to another salon in Campbell last time and while it was pretty good I paid far too much for what I got. This salon was great. I didn't have to wait at all and I came out looking like a super star. You can just tell when you walk in that its a great place. Everyone there has awesome hair. 5 stars! I'm coming here every time I need my hair done.
Van is my hair-perming goddess.
I have straight-as-a-pin, thick, hard to perm Asian hair. I really like the loose, wavy look, like this: http://ihearthottopic....
I've gone to Vidal Sassoon in SF to get a perm. I've also been to this expensive place in Beijing, China. Each time, the waves would look amazing right after I left the salon, then pretty much fall out a week later. People couldn't even tell that I'd changed my hair.
I used to go to SJSU, and looking for a convenient place to get my hair done, I checked out Tangerine. I've gone for Van for cuts and perms for at least 2 years now. It's been at least 6 months since my last perm, and I really need to go back and get it re-done because of how much it's grown out (I live in Berkeley now and it's more of a hassle to drive to San Jose). The waves are still there, and still look really wavy when my hair is wet. Here's what my hair looks like dry, 9 hours after washing it:
http://i697.photobucke...
http://i697.photobucke...
(Yeah, it's kind of messy - I don't own a brush and I was lying in bed before taking those photos)
Van also recommended this great hair spray scrunching stuff - Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock spray - and taught me how to use it. It takes me literally 2 minutes to get my hair ready for the day after washing it. I tip my head upside down, spray this stuff in it, scrunch the waves with my fingers, and that's it. I love it.
The only thing I can think of that I don't like about getting a perm is that it lightens the color of my hair. My hair is supposed to be black. Really black. As you can see in the photos, it's turned into this brownish color that I'm not too fond of.
In conclusion: Hard to perm hair + Van Bui @ Tangerine = Easy to care for, long-lasting waves.
I can say, the hair cut was perfect.
It's a very difficult place to find if you don't know your way around Downtown San Jose. There's so many one way streets and maneuvers you've got to do to get here. My appointment was at 2:00 but I arrived at 2:18 because a parking garage located near them was closed.
I was greeted at the counter and was introduced to my stylist, Charyl.
I highly suggest her. Even though I was 20 minutes late, she put all her time into making my hair cut perfect. She also used a great line of Paul Mitchell products on my hair especially for my swimmer's hair.
The procedure went like this:
- A nice overview of what was going to be done with my hair & cut a majority of the length. I brought a picture in.
- Shampoo, wash, condition, wash.
- Cut while wet
- Blow dry with full of volume and straighten
- Continue cutting
- Blow dry, finishing touches, style
This took about more than an hour, but she didn't rush in any way or scurry to finish my hair even if I did put her behind schedule. She's very cute and also likes to have some small talk so the atmosphere isn't silent. Perfect hair cut but 45$ was a bit more than I expected.
I'm very hesitant to give this 5 stars because as soon as I left, I was unpleasantly greeted with a parking ticket. I'll try not to be biased but I've got a 52$ fine to pay so.. meh.
Irene rocks...i havent cut my hair in over a year. I bring her what i want & she always makes it better. I cut my hair a week or so before i went to vegas and i totally loved it. Even my coworkers & members noticed rite away & complimented it each time they see me. Tangerine Hair Studio is awesome. I think its about time one day I highlight my hair again. one day ^__^ not sure when
Since I last was there....they were remodelin...a lot has changed...it looks even better.

I use to go here all the time when i was a student at SJSU. The stylists are really nice, and they know how to style and make your hair look nice. Its a bit pricey but you do get what you pay for. I definitely recommend this place for guys and girls.
An excellent cut! Kellie Hopkins is great, go see her while she's still just a junior stylist (I think their ranking goes junior, senior, advanced uh...supreme master? stylist $35 $45 $55 $75 for women $10 less for men). There's a lot people working there though, so getting an appointment isn't too hard, call or make an appointment online. I just immediately liked Kellie because she herself had these great natural looking highlights (I had to ask to make sure) and I liked her style. Oh and had the patience to let me run out mid-styling to feed the parking meter. She can definitely cut asian hair, but she also cuts all hair types.
So after moving here from Chicago I wanted to find another paul mitchell salon (clean lines, consistent work). Tangerine has a great atmosphere, places to sit and lounge around, there's this cute little yorkie mix running around, you feel like people are just hanging out. I'm sort of sad I'm missing out on their $10 manicure with haircut promo, but I'm really happy with my hair.
FYI park in the garage and they'll validate it. Tangerine is on a walking traffic only street.
This place sucks. End of story.
After a 2 year hiatus I came back to Linh and I wasn't disappointed at all.
This time I took a picture and I came out feeling refreshed and beautiful!!! Honestly next time I won't bother too much with the cut and let him work his magic!!! Its as if he knows exactly what I was thinking of!!!
Thanks Linh!!!!

I had a haircut several months ago and yes, I'm only giving it a review now...kind of tells you how "stoked" I was about it. It was a decent standard layer haircut I got since I wanted to save some dough since the previous hairdresser (Mylan) at LoftA2 moved elsewhere. I didn't want to go all the way to Campbell to cut my hair so I decided to stay somewhat local and tried Tangerine out. I heard some people went there before with satisfied haircuts and I've always passed by it when I went to SJSU so I figured, "sure why not?"
I had my appointment with Kelly (not to confuse you with another hairdresser name Calli?). She was several minutes late (which usually happens anywhere so I didn't mind too much) but I felt like the whole staff was a little subpar on welcoming me and assuring me that things will be done at a certain time, etc. I didn't even know who Kelly was until I asked a 3rd time and someone finally asked, "oh, she's right there" and right in front of me so then I knew/understood how long it could have been than waiting around assuming not having anyone talk to me or assure me of their procedures.
Fortunately, Kelly was sweet and nice. She's a jr. stylist I believe which means she's still "new" there. She asked what I was looking for and I asked to have my hair thin out since it's so thick and to have it several inches shorter. She did layers and it came out ok. I think I was expecting more and it could've been my fault for not trying something different or going "crazy" with it or perhaps the lack of any personal welcoming to the place...but it was JUST OK....
Overall, Kelly did fine. I think I was "spoiled" at Loft A2 and other places I've been to but it really felt like this place was very....clique-ish since everyone seem to be chummy to those who were regular customers while I (a new one) was left floating about. You'd think they'd try to give same treatment w/ everyone to build clientele. Eh...whatever...one bonus, they do use Paul Mitchell products which I do like.
Depending on my mood the next few months I may go there again...just 'cuz I liked Kelly but I could ask my other friends on people they go to...'cuz I'm not wow-ed.
This was the first time I went to get my hair professionally done. I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect. I was introduced to stylist Van Bui through my friends Thao & Julissa. Van did an amazing job on Thao's extentions. She was nice enough to take her own time to do a mock-do before she actually did my hair for prom. She helped me out and told me what looked good and what didn't. She even supplied a flower hair pin that she made herself. She made my hair look awesomeeeand made my prom fit look even better. The hair just tied the outfit alll together. I am sooooo happy that I went to her!
The environment in Tangerine is so relaxed. Everyone is friendly with a smiling face and they offer a refreshment as soon as you walk in. I will most definitely come back to get my hair colored by Van (: My new stylist and friend hah
This place is horrible. The people who work here are stuck up and talk smack about their clients as soon as they walk out the door. So fake. It's a very unprofessional atmosphere. The last time I was here, I bought a Paul Mitchell product and the girl at the front desk (Penny) was a complete biznatch. I'm sorry to say that, but it's the truth. She had such an attitude problem and I was not sure why. Leave your problems at home, don't bring your drama to work. The people that work here should go through customer service training classes cuz they sure need it!
They also need to leave their pets at home! What kind of business is this? Is it "bring your dog to work day" everyday or something? I swear.
UPDATE 4/27/09--From my update below. I've officially been CHOPPED & SCREWED..& I wish I was talking about the T-Pain song!! My hairstylist friend who I had highlight my hair told me about my haircut, "SHE F--ED UP UR HAIR!" Not just split ends from the razor but one side didn't match up with the other, different layer lengths on both sides. My friend tried to blend in the rest of the hair & stuff, but said I had to wait for the bad side to grow out which would take an additional 3 months or so. Ladies if you go there....maybe you should just pay more and not get a junior stylist.
I didn't want to do this, but I had to bump it down. Last night, as I was looking at my hair I noticed some split ends...split ends, I just got my hair cut, like 4 days ago??!! =( My friend who used to work at a salon and is a licensed cosmetologist informed me that a razor (which is what was used the whole time on my hair except to cut bangs & clean up at the end) will give you split ends. GRRRRRR!! So my newly cut hair has split ends. I will probably have to let it grow out til I get the split ends chopped off again since I cut like a good 3 inches off! I guess this should teach me not to cheat even if it'll save me $10.
Maybe I'd come back for other services..or for a haircut when they won't use razors if I feel brave again..until then I'm sorry but I have to bump it down 2 stars; there shouldn't be split ends from a cut 4 days later.

Finally, I don't have to worry when I sit in the chair anticipating what I'm going to have to say at the end when they ask me how I like it. This place is amazing! My fiance and I have been coming here since 2007 before we were engaged. This place was right down the street from our apartment. We both fell in love with this place because they actually knew how to cut and color hair! We are regulars =] This place is all about "what you want" .They make you feel right at home and welcomed. They're all sweet as can be and very family oriented which was a plus for me! Davey and I always make heads turn when we walk out of Tangerine, we always get compliments. Great experience every time and we cant wait to get our hair done again!
Not a good experience at all. Color was ugly & wrong. PM Product was very harsh, perhaps it was expired.(?)I was quoted $80.00 for color touchup & a few highlights. Surprise...now they wanted $125.00. When I refused to pay that much and left, I was harrassed, even at my job. They kept my ID. When I went to get it from the owner she wouldnt release it unless I took her with me to my bank...HELLO! Owner had her dog there, apparently it is there all the time, so if anyone has an allergy-beware. I dont think it is a good place to go if you have [caucasian type] hair. OK probably for Asian. TERRIBLE SERVICE, ROTTEN ATTITUDE and HORRID PARKING. Linda was stylist and she was very sweet-thats why I even gave it 1 star.
1/21 @11pm: made an online reservation for 1/23
1/22 @12:30pm: confirmation email for an appt on 1/23 @ 1pm
1/23 @ 10am: got a call that Charyl was in a car accident and had to cancel all of her appts for that day. :( reschedule for next friday.
1/28 @ 5pm: got a call reminding me about my friday appt @ 11am
1/30 @10:43am: arrived at tangerine. it wasn't until 11:20am when i had been seated.
It's "Meh, I've experienced way better.." because it took too long for me to get my haircut. :( But I picked Tangerine because I like Paul Mitchell hair salons and read really good reviews about the place. I really liked Reveal (also a Paul Mitchell hair salon), the one in San Luis Obispo, so I thought this one would be just as good. The price for a junior stylist is quite reasonable ($35 w/o tip). I just wasn't in favor of all the hair products they sprayed and sloshed onto my hair. I actually ended up rewashing it when I got back home because my hair felt so dirty and greasy.
The studio is between 3rd and 4th St. on Paseo de San Antonio... just a block from downtown SJ library!! When I was there I didn't feel the staff were all that friendly. Maybe because it was just slow in the morning, I noticed they seemed to be talking amongst themselves and goofing around, and not really helping with customers who were waiting. I was really bored waiting past 11am because I'd been waiting since the previous week. I wish they would've just told me that they would be a little late for me. Overall, I wasn't super excited/happy about my haircut. I just felt they just cut my hair really quick and that was it. It was... below "a-ok". =\
I'd come here to just get a haircut and nothing more. Be patient. Expect for them to not be exactly on time and for it to take 1.5 to 2 hours for just a haircut. Next time I won't have as high of an expectation from them and maybe try a different stylist.
Go green take: Lightrail or any bus towards downtown SJ
It was that time again! Time for a haircut.
Aileen V and I needed to get our hair done and since I was in town, she made appointments for us here. She was looking for a colorist and I just needed a cut so I wasn't too picky on where to go.
I was set up with Cheryl since we did make the appointment a day before and she was the only one really left for me and I didn't mind since I hear great things about her!
I came a little late since I landed at little past 2 and my appointment was 2:30. She was ready for me when I got there and she talked to me and made sure she knew what I wanted. She would give suggestions and I loved them!
She washed my hair, cut and styled in all in less than an hour! With tip my hair came out to be $45! whoo hoo!
I got my hair did here right before Christmas. My stylist was Kellie (with an ie, there is another with a y at the end). She was a Jr. Stylist, but you would never be able to tell with the job she did!
I got my hair colored back to my original hair color. I have short hair, just past my shoulders, so I figured the color would be like $75 or so. She also cut my hair with a razor, which was a first for me. She layered the hell out of it (in a good way)!! She then blow dried my hair and use the round brush to style it. They do use a flat iron, but they charge you like $15 extra.
I was expecting to pay like $100 tops, so imagine my surprise when I get to the register and they ask for $160!! I'm on a budget, so I didn't plan for this, but I should have asked her before I had the color done. My bad! I guess it just makes me feel like such a cheap ass to do that. Anyway, she took $20 for the coupon they have going on and I left a $10 tip, so it came to $150. I called back the following business day and asked for an explanation of their color pricing. She said they go by how many "beakers" of color they use, so since I had a lot of hair, eventhough it was short, they had to use more color. Oh well, next time I know to ask.
I"ll definately be back. Go see Kellie, she will hook your hair up!!
I think this place had me at online appointments. The first time I came here, Charyl cut my hair. Although she was really cute, and friendly, I left feeling unfulfilled (it wasn't her fault, but more that I didn't have any idea of what I wanted). I was feeling lack luster after long nights and early mornings, and I needed a change...something to make me actually want to look in the mirror again. I'm glad I decided to book an appointment with Linh.
I've always had difficulty making decisions, and after finding a cut out in a magazine, I meekly showed it to him, and he encouraged me to take the plunge and chop my long hair off (which I've had for about two years). I really needed that push! I felt like everyone has been reluctant to cut it, but because I did, I finally feel like I have found a style that doesn't make my long face look longer, and something that has a bit of texture and excitement. I LOVE IT.
As an added bonus, there was none of that awkward silence, and Linh was super friendly. He took his time, and payed attention to the smallest detail (even though we were running over an hour, and it was getting close to 8pm). Despite my college budget, I'll be back :)
ps. minus one star for the receptionists. I think because it was near closing, they were losing interest and didn't even let him know I was there.
I would never go back here. I went here for a little over a year, until my haircuts started coming out lopsided, too choppy, everything no one wants. I would get my hair cut with Vanessa, and although she was nice, Professional etiquette is not to share your personal life with your clients. Primarily information dealing with the law...
You don't get a lot of variety at Tangerine in terms of the types of haircuts (a lot of choppy , messy cuts not everyone's cup of tea) , nor do you get good customer service. The last time I went there was a little over a year ago, and at that time, customers would just walk out the door and the stylists would start gossiping about them! Completely unprofessional.
So the first time I went to Tangerine was in october after two years of growing my hair out it was finally time to donate it. I made an appointment with Cheryl who was able to put my hair into 5 separate braids and then lob them off for kids who needed it.
She did a great job she washed my hair first and didn't use any clippers. The minty shampoo makes your scalp all tingly, it's pretty rad.
I went again after my hair got a little unmanageable just to get trimmed. Same great experience, and I always seem to make appointments spur of the moment. Luckily those are the days when there's a quick opening to book an appointment!
SOLELY BASED ON CLAUDIA aka the esthetician
Claudia is amazing! I've been getting facials from her for about 2 years now and have never been disappointed. Personality wise, she is sweet and informative. She really knows a lot of skin, and I appreciate that. Her facial services ranges but I get the 60 minute one ($95)
Holler to Claudia! Now my skin is healthy. No more acne. Amen!
Very good decent hair salon. The prices are moderate and within my range of $50-55 for my short hair.
At the time I didn't like my hair too much because the cut was not short enough to get rid of my perm and it was a little deceiving to get a really nice flat iron but then when I wash my hair it's a mushroom-ish style. Basically I got a dramatic A-line and fortunately it's been growing out nicely so that's been a plus. I think I will go back and try a trim once I can cut off all of the perm and maintain a decent look.
Service wise, they were very courteous and I was helped right away. I also like that it's not as pretentious as some other salons in downtown.
I can only speak for services offered by the esthetician, Claudia. I've never actually had a hair service at this salon.
I've been seeing Claudia for waxing and facials for almost two years now. My poor eyebrows were looking pretty sad the first time I went in for a waxing from Claudia--they had suffered years of over-plucking and general carelessness. I think what I like most about Claudia is that she's honest. She told me that my eyebrows weren't going to look perfect after my first appointment with her, or even the second or third, but that it was going to take a few months of filling them in until they grew in correctly. I was pleased to see my eyebrows look normal, with a little bit of filling, look normal for the first time in years after just the first visit. Within months they looked great on their own.
In addition to brow waxes, she does great bikini waxes. If you've never tried one before, she'll ease you into it, starting with the minimum amount of hair removal, and increasing the amount she takes off with subsequent appointments until you're satisfied with you have left (or not). And she'll make sure you feel comfortable. I've had great luck getting relatively painless waxes from her.
After a few months of visiting Claudia for waxing services, she talked me into trying a facial. Her facials are the best. My skin always looks more radiant and healthy after a facial, and the blackhead extractions have been incredibly effective at preventing any substantial breakouts.
Overall, if your eyebrows are looking ragged, you need a bikini wax or you want to relax and try a facial, book an appointment with Claudia--you won't regret it.
The stylist took me in and spent an entire 2 1/2 hours working to materialize/fix what had gone wrong.
While the color sat in, she even set me up at the shower station where I could lay back and nap real quick (I was tired coming from school! haha). That's hella customer service.
In the end, I walked away with her fixes:
Added the 2nd color she missed the first time (blond) - check.
Placed them at the sides, to frame my face - check.
She bid me farewell without an extra penny to spend, which was so awesome of her. All that TIME and EFFORT at NO EXTRA COST. I really appreciated that, since I had spent days mulling over the couple hundred I done dropped at the outset. I'm a starving student, ya heard?
my rating:
3 stars - for their complete accountability after a blunder.
minus 1 star - for the receptionist's lack of hospitality. at both my visits, she never informed my stylist i checked in. we were both left hanging for like 15 minutes. wth?
minus 1 star - for walking out half-heartedly. it still didn't feel quite right and i couldn't possibly ask her to do anymore; but I know she really, really tried.

First of all, I drive from the East Bay to San Jose, CA to get my nails done! That alone should tell you how great the experience is. Sher has done my nails for a long time and I recently followed her to Tangerine Hair Salon.
I am extremely satisfied with Sher's artistry in working with my nails. They are ALWAYS beautiful when I leave. I have a set of acrylic nails and am extremely proud of the way my nails and hands look. I'm always getting compliments!
The price is very reasonable and there's validated parking! Before I started with Sher, I tried other salons. The nails were CLUNKY! There's no other word for it. They were thick & too long for my hands. I couldn't even fasten my bra! Now, my nails look very natural. They are shaped to fit the size of my hands.
Sher's pedicures are heavenly! Her massage technique is so relaxing! I bring my book and read while I soak; or sometimes we talk about what's going on in our lives.
Bottom Line: When I leave, my nails (hands and feet) look like a million bucks! Color is very neatly applied (unlike some nail techs, Sher doesn't spend 10 minutes with an orange stick correcting "Boo-Boos".
Tangerine is a chic salon, very up-beat. I get a kick out of the different hair styles & colors the operators come up with. Everyone is very professional and the shop is clean. That's a big plus in my book!! I just can't say enough good things about Sher in particular and Tangerine in general.
Thanks, Guys!!

And now a thousand years between..."
Led Zeppelin's on point with that jam!! and Miss Tara is mos def on point when it comes to cutting hair. I have never left a salon really happy with the results -- which is probably why my hair grew to be super long, because I always dreaded going to get it cut. Why, what's the big deal?you may be wondering (if you're a guy) Ladies, you know how it is! You go in asking for a trim, or maybe some layers or somethin and these overpriced so-called hairstylists end up giving you either a crooked bob (yep, that was me back in '01), a mullet (sorry but it's not sexy or cool to bare any resemblance to billy ray), or worse (fill in the blank with hair horror stories, I know most of you got plenty)
So I was all Hallelujah! after meeting Tara. My best childhood buddy, Melissa, has major ADD when it comes to her hair and she's constantly updating her style, cut and color. And no matter how many times she changes it, her hair always looks awesome. I don't think I've ever seen Mellie have a bad hair day. You know why? Because she's been getting her hair done by Tara for the past over 5 years.
Tara's got some enchanted hands on her for real, like an Edward Scissorhands-type deal. She has this magical ability to create a cut that corresponds with the hair's natural texture in order for it to look good without having to do a lot of fancy shmancy stuff to it. She makes bedhead look good (not the product, but the actual tousled from sleep look) because she gives a good cut and I barely need hairspray or straighteners or all that other Sally Beauty Supply junk, even though I must say in addition to her scissor skills, Tara's roundbrush blowdry was off the chain and my hair looked silky soft and voluminous afterward. Also the hour I was there hella flew by like what! Tara and I connected immediately and made great conversation, like with an old friend you hadn't seen in years, that I was amazed at how time went by so fast. That's how it is when you're having a good time, you know? And that's how I've always imagined it should be at a salon, just kickin back with a skilled stylist and friend who you can trust because she knows exactly what she's doing.
Tara, from start to finish, was on top of her game. I am grateful that I met her. She's got my locks on lock from here on out. UPDATE: SHE ALSO CUT AND COLORED MY MOM'S HAIR ALL CUTE, 1940s DIVA STYLE AND MY MA AND EVERYONE AT HER WORK LOVES IT!!
Before I Jhirmack bounce-back out of here, I'd like to leave you all with a quote from none other than Victoria "Mrs. G." Gotti: "A woman's luscious mane is her crowning glory" And if the daughter of the Gambino crime family mafia boss drops quotes all intense like that, you know there ain't no fuckin around.
LINH TRAN is my stylist. He is the only guy there so he gets booked up pretty quickly. If he's booked, he'll slide you in when he has the time to stay late so don't be shy about asking...he's a cool girl...i mean guy...hahhaha! He's trendy and always knows the newest styles so let him hook you up!
I get lots of compliments and ppl ask me where I get my hair done alot even when it's 3 months ago! Seriously, other stylist try to glance over to watch what he's doing cause he's that good. I've recommended a few of my friends and they still go to him for cut and color. The way he texturizes my hair is amazing. Honestly, I've never cut my hair anywhere else for 6 years now. Even if I'm desperate I'll wait for him.

You can only book through him not the salon.
EDIT:
omg.. the more i look at my bangs in the mirror, the more i hate it!!
so question:
charyl cut my hair last time and i absolutely loved it, she even told me to come by for a "FREE" bang trim whenever i needed it.
so today i went back and when i walked in, all they asked me was what i needed to get done, i said "bang trim" thinking they'd ask me if there was someone i preferred or something, but nope, i sat down right away, but not with charyl.
i felt a little awkward but i said ok, i'm in a hurry so i guess so.. when i was done it was $15!! seriously?? what happened to free?? and what happened to me growing some balls to ask why it wasn't free. ughh!!!
and now..i HATE MY BANGS!! it looked good at the salon, but it always does because they style it for you and spray all that stuff in it to make it look good. now i'm home and they've turned into bangs that are waaaay too short and i'm a bit irritated cause i'm going somewhere next week for nye. ehh serves me right for getting it done right before an event.
but seriously, are bang trims $15???

After losing my job and after being the victim of a huge reduction in income, I stopped going to my previous hair stylist and went on a hiatus from getting my hair cut altogether. Although my previous stylist rocked and made me feel fantastic after each visit, I just couldn't afford him. With an a-line cut grown well past my shoulders, I knew it was time. I just couldn't procrastinate any longer. In fact, I decided that I wanted a complete change: Goodbye straight hair and hello curly!
So I went on Yelp and found Tangerine Hair Studio. Because I've learned to live within my means, I requested a junior stylist. In addition to requesting a junior stylist, I also requested the desired dates and times. Within an hour my appointment was booked, and it was all done online--how simple and painless.
When I arrived at Tangerine (a bit late), I was immediately escorted to a booth. The woman who cut my hair, whose name evades me, took at look at my hair and, of course, said that in addition to the perm, I would need a cut. Well, after almost a year without a haircut, I understood that. She then informed me she was a senior stylist. What? But I requested a junior! Hmmm, she conceded; she would charge me junior prices. What a sweetheart. What excellent customer service.
Being that I didn't really have a preferred style in mind, I let her have complete control. What a great decision that was! I absolutely loved the cut. She cut it in layers and did a fantastic job. When it came to perming my hair, she informed me that, due to lack of time, she wouldn't be able to fit me in the same day. Darn it! I was leaving to Vegas the following day and wanted to sport my new look.
Well, after cutting my hair and seeing my hair create its natural wave, she recommended that I avoid the perm altogether. She thought that my natural wave was the look I was going for. It definitely wasn't. I'm familiar with my natural wave, so I know that, although initially it looks great, it only takes an hour for it to look like I just forgot to brush my hair.
Overall, I had a good experience. I love the cut, but I didn't exactly walk out with what I wanted. I wanted curls--or rather, more prominent waves. Although I didn't get the perm, I walked out with my pocket not much lighter. The more she insisted I didn't need the perm, the more I thought about how much it would cost me. I guess, in a way, she kept me within my budget.
Oh, and because I didn't get the perm, I was able to pay her senior stylist rate. I don't think I'd go back and try to get that perm again, but I would definitely go back for a cut.
