9 reviews for Taneytown Deli & Sandwich Shoppe
Damned good deli, this Taneytown (pronounced "Tawny-town") Sandwich Shoppe. Fast service, inexpensive, no-frills, and really good sandwiches. Get past the menu chock-a-block full of bad puns, and there's just a world of tasty cold cuts piled generously between two slices of bread, dressed the way you want it.
Lunchtime gets crowded, as the area offices empty out and head here at noon. The local college kids love the place, too. If the Frederick Rd. storefront is too busy, slip around the back next to Deusenberg's, and up the alley to the original bottom-floor entrance. There's another service counter and additional seating there.
If you're looking for fast, cheap, and tasty, you can't do better than a solid lunch at Taneytown. They've been around for sixty years, and they're obviously doing something right.
Let me begin by saying I have a thing for hole-in-the-wall joints that excel at what they do. The fact that they're relatively hard to find and you probably wouldn't know about it if not for the recommendation of established patrons makes it that much more special. It's like a secret shared between said patron and me. Très intime.
My understanding of the Taneytown location off of Frederick Road is that it has two separate storefronts--one you can reach from the main street and the other by curving around to the back through an alley.
I went to the one via alley and upon entering, I thought "the deli counter is very mom-and-pop..." then I thought "that is one ridiculously large menu." There wasn't much of a wait to order so I actually needed a little more time to finish reading the menu. I'd recommend to take a look at their menu (http://www.taneytownde...) before going. Looking at the menu, you'll find that there are only a couple items that cost more than $10. Also, let me emphasize the times they're open (Monday-Friday 6 am - 3 pm; Saturday 6:30 am - 2 pm) because I'm definitely the type to try to go there for dinner.
I finally settled on #64, "The Country Club," with turkey breast, roast beef, sliced egg, onion and thousand island dressing. My s.o. (the said patron) ordered the Chicken Paisano, "boneless Italian chicken breast with Italian ham & melted provolone." While he was waiting for the sandwiches, I took a seat in their little seating area. The place is cutesy, decorated with countryish tchotchkes and checks--there's enough stuff to look at to keep small children occupied while waiting for the food. Not to say that you'll be waiting for a long time. Our order was out within minutes, neatly wrapped, and stuffed with delicious fillings.
When I say stuffed, I mean stuffed. My sandwich was HUGE! I unwrapped it and once I got over my initial shock at the mere size, I took a bite and all the components added up to a great whole. The rundown: I'm definitely a fan of their roast beef. My sandwich was so big I couldn't finish it. The chicken paisano was bangin' and I'm tempted to get one the next time around as much as I want to taste something else from the expansive menu. The counter lady was professional... and efficient... she seemed nice enough. Anyways, check it!
I've never had a bad meal here but I never made it through the whole menu before I started working away from the area. I love the 3 Stooges sandwich. Like others have said, the original location is in an alley on Mellor. I did eat at their 2nd location (both were still open when I was there so I'm not sure if Lola is confused or not.)
The 2nd location on Frederick Road is very near the Mellor location and has the added benefit of having a full kitchen with a deep fryer so you can get fries and not just chips there.
Taneytown (Established in the 1940's) has moved just a teensy weensy bit. A sign is now proudly displayed on Frederick Ave! Out of the alley onto the main street!
SERIOUSLY GOOD SANDWICHES!! (without the sometimes borderline abusive deli attitude)
As good as a deli can get - really good sandwiches, every possible option you could want and then some, huge portions, great prices, quick friendly service, etc. etc. What more could you ask for??
Hours: Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
I went here for lunch with some of my fellow teachers! It was PACKED (it was
high lunch
time). First of all it is not in Taneytown. It's in Catonsville, tucked off an
alley on Mellor
Avenue. There are dozens of sandwhiches on the menu. Taneytown has no parking
lot, but
there was space on the street, a short walk away.
I had the Gang Buster which was Italian Ham, Pepperoni, and Cheddar (#59-
popular
sandwhiches ha d anumber to make ordering easier). I did however ask for white
bread and
they gave me Rye- But it was still good! It was huge! Loaded with PILES of
ham and then the
rest! Their Cream of Crab soup was a hot item also.
This "home of the overstuffed sandwich" is definitely true to its name. Add to the bursting sandwiches an entertaining array of specialty names ( "The Poultry-Geist," the "E-I-E-I-O," and "Piggy's Piglet," for example) and it's easy to see why this place is so busy on Friday afternoons. My personal all-time favorite is "The Fudclucker," filled with mounds of white-meat chicken salad and stacks of crispy bacon on a perfectly-toasted pretzel roll.
Great little deli hidden behind Frederick ave! I've yet to find a better deli in the area, and they have yet to let me down. They have breakfast/lunch hours as noted by the other reviewers, and can get especially crowded midday. Calling ahead is a very good idea. They have a very large menu, and everything I've tried thus far has been great. Their egg breakfast sandwiches are also great, as they're open nice and early. They have some seating in the back, however most of the time the tables are snatched up pretty quick.
This deli can be difficult to locate if you are not familiar with the area. The front door is actually in an alley. This said it is worth the effort. Great sandwiches at a reasonable price.
