Review from Pat P.
I can't say this is the best Indian cuisine I've ever had, but it definitely holds its own.
Tandoor Kitchen is in an easily found location (Parker and Telegraph) and always has plenty of seating. It's a pretty good price (full meal under $8) and the food tastes quite good. My favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala with a garlic naan.
Considering the surrounding area, this is a haven for college students on a tight budget that do not want to eat instant noodles anymore. After the meal, head over to the 7-Eleven on the opposite corner of the intersection for a Slurpee. Don't forget to spare some change for the kind homeless man sitting outside. -

** I am a native of India who has eaten at every single Indian restaurant in Berkeley at least 3 times each, read the bottom of the review for my complete ranking list or look in my Yelp Lists **
** Begin Snobbery **
For higher rated restaurants, my reviews are very thorough with lots of explanation. For inferior Indian offerings such as this place, I don't bother with elaboration.
** End Snobbery **
-- Entree Taste: 1/5
I didn't know Indian food, no matter how bad, could be as bland as American food. I was wrong.
-- Naan: 3/5
-- Price/Value: 5/5
-- Service: 2/5

Santa Ana, CA
Good thing this place is right across the street from the laundromat. I never would've found it!
Solid food. Good prices. Much the same fare as other indian places in berkeley.
The choley masala is tasty! As is the garlic naan!
The service here is great. They're super nice. If you sit down and forget to get a pitcher of water out of the little self-serve fridge they'll bring it to you.
It's nice on the inside. I'll try to upload a picture or two. There's even upstairs seating. And they just got new tile.
I'll probably come here a lot when I work up an appetite studying this year. It's one of the only yummy food places within a 2 minute saunter of the new apartment!
So if you find yourself stranded at Bing Wong Wash Center, don't get junk at 7-Eleven. Eat a real meal here instead! -

I know John B. is waiting for this one, so I'm cranking it out even though I've got a long ass paper to write. On the other hand, I'm combating an afternoon food coma, so here I go.
good things:
. spacious facility with nice indoor mezzanine and outdoor balcony
. Ali is friendly, though did not know what orders where what
. home to Berkeley's Kitchen
food:
. portions small, but just right for the price
. thanks for reminding me how it feels to have my mouth on fire
. beef lahori was a kick in the mouth in a good way
. tea lacked masala chai flavor
In the same way I ask people if they can look past red velvet cupcakes, can people look past the chicken tikka masala? Get over it. Get the lamb. Get the beef.
to try next time:
. lamb briyani
. garlic naan (rumored to be super garlicy, which i love) -

My meal was NOT good.
I bit into uncooked chicken curry.. and let me tell you, Ladies and Gents, it was GROSS. The garlic naan was over the top with some dried version of garlic that sucked.
I would not go back if someone paid me to eat there.

Sufficiently dank.
Before my world expanded beyond Telegraph Avenue, this was my favorite South Asian place in Berkeley. And I still like it, but I only go if I happen to be nearby.
I actually have no words of criticism for them; I only withhold a fifth star because there are much stronger players on the larger field. Basically if you live nearby, I recommend you make this your regular spot.
*I don't know how much of a selling point this is for most people, but I think Tandor Kitchen has the best plain rice in Berkeley.
**I don't know if anyone cares enough to change the Yelp listing, but they spell it Tandor, not Tandoor. -

Quality: 2/6
Service: 3/5
Value: 2/4
Total: 7/15 = 2/5
Tandoor used to be my default Indian restaurant, but they went down hill about 4 years ago. I've been trying them every once in a while, but the quality has just not come back. The last time I was there, the Tika was not palatable. I really wish they had their old cooks back. -
Review from Sarah W.
I am a current tikka masala connoisseur, hungry and picky. YAY to work lunch-outs.
Tandoor Kitchen's chicken tikka masala is expensive at $10.87 (including tax) for what you get in terms of portion size and taste. The curry is mediocre, run of the mill curry. It's watered down, and some what bland. Masalas are yogurt based so they should be creamy in my humble opinion. The bazmati rice was also somewhat hard/undercooked...
But on the plus side, Tandoor has an upstairs, great service, and is good for large groups. Plus, where else can you get conveniently located Indian food near a school campus? Love to Berkeley for that. They also have a nice combo lunch special where you get naan + a smaller portion of your choice of curry + garbanzo beans. It'll definitely fill you up for only $7. Maybe I'll try one of those next time, just not the tikka masala.
I much prefer House of Curries' paneer tikka masala at $8.65 for a bigger portion size if I have to go for convenience and price over quality and taste (Mint Leaf shout out!). Alas I am just too indulgent and cannot appreciate campus eateries. -

I like it. 3.5 stars. Yoori C. invited me to come with her to try this place out so we got a curry sampler of the Chicken Tikka Masala, vegetable curry, beef curry, and lamb curry. The beef curry and lamb curry are a home-run. You get alot of big bold beef (SPICY) flavor, and also the lamb curry is a lamb lover's dream. I felt taken care here because of the family-run style. I was able to meet the manager/owner Ali. Definitely warm and welcoming.
This place is good if you're not a Chicken Tikka Masala eater. While the Chicken Tikka Masala sauce is better, the chicken is sorta the same as everywhere else. House of Curries and Naan N Curry have Tikka Masala sauces that are just toooo thick like you're eating yogurt or something. Tandoor Kitchen's still has that rich taste without putting you down after your meal but the chicken needs work because it's dry.
I didn't find the naan particularly different from other places, but they do have really damn good beef and lamb curry. -

I went here today with a friend after passing it for years and wondering how it was.
I just wanted a snack- we both ordered the vegetable samosas (only $3)- then went and sat upstairs in the sun on the outdoor patio (yes it was a bit funky! but it has character!)
Each order came with two big samosas and a side of deliciously soft chickpeas in curry. It was actually enough for my entire lunch! and the samosas weren't too greasy, which I hate, or too spicy - so my stomach actually felt good after eating them!
yay! I will be back! -

I wanted to try Tandoor kitchen since the reviews looked good. We went for Dinner on Sunday night. It's a no-service sit yourself kind of place and you go up to a counter and order right to the cook.
We ordered Samosa, Saag Panear (Spinach and Cheese) , Alo Gosht (Goat and Potatoes), Basmati rice, and a Mango Lassi. All solid dishes. My favorite was the spinach and cheese dish. . .Tasty. . .the cheese was fresh and not rubbery. The Samosa's were big stuffed triangles served with chick peas and very good. The goat dish had a good sauce which was good over the rice. The sweet mango Lassi was a nice drink to wash it down.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Booooring. It's a sign when they have Asians/Hispanics making the food, and not Indian/Southeast Asians.
I thought tor the price it was a little skimpy on the meat--which was to say the curry chicken was rather bland. I also wasn't a huge fan of the chickpeas, although it wasn't bad by any standards.
It had an upside in which the servers brought me utencils instead of me having to go get them, although it might have been because I had various items with me in which I did not want to drag back and forth across the room. I did have to go and pick up more napkins, though.
Muslims should take note that they have a "halal meat" sign in the window.
I wasn't impressed, but at least the staff here wasn't as creepy as the people at House of Curries on Durant.Listed in: For the hungry Berkeley…

this place is not bad. we just happened upon it while looking for something else and decided to go with it. I was a little unsure because there weren't too many people inside and that's not always a good sign.
we got the chicken curry special and the seekh kabab special. they messed up my order and got me lamb curry instead, but brought me the right thing once I pointed it out to them (did he have his finger in there, or did I imagine that?!!)
the chicken curry was o-k... some of the pieces seemed a little sketchy. the seekh kabab was also o-k... seemed a little uncooked on the inside, though. I like that the specials have the item you want, some rice, a chana masala, and a naan. well-rounded.
not somewhere I would plan to go and don't think I'll be back - there are many similarly priced options that serve better quality! -

I wanted to like Tandoor Kitchen, and was trying to find another little lunch place. I usually go to Naan N Curry because it's so close to school, and hey, daal and a piece of naan is $5. So I was excited to see a lunch special of chicken curry, rice, naan, and chickpeas for $5. Everything seemed much fresher than at NNC, with the open kitchen working on small batches of the dishes.
The chickpeas, rice and naan were good and I was pretty happy with that... alas, not only was my chicken curry lukewarm, my chicken was cold in places. Yuck. As other have mentioned, it was pretty tiny too - like half of a chicken thigh swimming around in an ocean of sauce. Now, even cooking at home I know the value in preparing/cooking things ahead of time, but come on! Keep it hot or heat it through all the way!
They also lost a point for weird tasting water. I mean, Naan N Curry's can taste kind of weird sometimes, but this was even funkier. And I couldn't find any lemon to augment it.
I dunno though, something inside me says that I should try it out again. Maybe I'll go for the veggie lunch special. -

Berkeley, CA
Tandoori Kitchen is one of my favorite places at Berkeley, because it's a restaurant/cafe where you can sit and drink as much tasty chai tea as you want. It's open, has decor with personality, and Ali (the owner) is a friendly dude. Good to chat with, get food advice from, etc. Omar's pretty cool too.
In short:
- Food: Solid, and their chai kicks ass.
- Price: Great- excellent basic dish ($2.99 for 2 samosas, garbonzo beans, and unlimited chai), as well as combo meals and "full" meals.
- Service: They bring the food to/from, we chat, if any of the chai ingredients are empty, you just get their attention, and they're on it.
I won't discuss the quality of food, b/c I'm no expert in subtle differences with the other Indian places in the area. Nor is it the primary reason I came the first couple times, nor why I came today.
I came here for the first time because of their Recession Special early last year. Quirky name, and a solid, solid deal. You get a half plate of the dish, almost half plate of rice, and a portion of garbonzo beans dish thing. Add that to an order of naan and the tasty chai? For $5.99, there aren't many deals this good.
Other than Ali and the people that work here, three things really stand out.
1. Their chai is easily the best. House of curries and Naan n Curry (the two competitors in the local area), the chai just doesn't taste fresh. I like myself a tasty drink, and this place wins.
2. I regularly come here for the 2 samosas+garbanzo beans+chai ($2.99). Disclaimer: they're microwaved. But it doesn't really matter. It's good for a snack when I'm not hungry, for when I don't feel like a full meal while my friends eat. And I still get to get in on the chai.
3. The balcony is great for a lazy sunny day. Many a good debate had here.
That's it really. I'm often too lazy to cook, and this place allows me to be lazy and not feel bad about overspending on food. -

So, this story begins on Yom Kippur (the jewish day of going hungry and being cranky). We googled sunset and found that it was at an incredibly late 6pm. "Where's the nearest freakin' Indian place? I'm sooo hungry?"
Cue yelp. House of curries is a whole three blocks away, we're going to Tandoor kitchen. Seems cool, though we're a bit skeptical: can it "bring down the house"...of curries?
We get there two minutes to sundown -- sweet. It's like all the other indian places, but ONE DOLLAR CHEAPER. need I say more?
But wait, there's more! Their chai (served in glass glasses) is unsweetened, allowing you to get milk and sugar. They've got two floors and some funky decor. We picked floor two and found ourselves sitting at a table full of stamps. Sure, it's different. whatever.
The only annoying part of dinner was the nigerian insurance specialist/financial planning (we're still not quite sure) who had holed himself up and was handing out business cards....um. We're starving after the official day of jewish stomach-crunching. Can this wait?
The paneer tikka was slightly less creamy than the House, the cubes slightly chewier. Less fluffy naan, slightly. On the whole, a fair balance.
This place's got a clean rap. not quite like my sins this year, tho :-(. -
Review from Amanda B.
Berkeley, CA
I ducked in here once to avoid the undressing gaze of the bouncers who stand in front of the neighboring weed bank. I always chose House of Curries over Tandoor, despite proximity, because my Indian roommates always dissed this place on grounds of authenticity, so thank you weed bouncers?
I've only ordered the vegetarian dishes and naan; my belly acids are actually attacking a whole dish of paneer tikka as I type. I like the vegetarian dishes in general because they're usually more seasoned than other Berkeley Indian-Pakistani restaurants. The paneer tikka would be perfect, with perfection unachieved because the relatively titanic cubes of paneer are difficult to fit in your mouth if you traditionally eat them in scoops of naan and sauce (and especially if you are handicapped by a rather small-ish mouth)...Naan has its good and bad days - today it was particularly thick and fluffy, but is always smaller than House of Currie's.
I love the architecture of the building: both floors are paneled by long, open windows that look out onto Telegraph and Parker, great for people watching. A kindly older Indian man, likely the owner, helps run the place and is always chatting with friends and regulars. I have a somewhat twisted fantasy that he will one day adopt me and let me eat all of the paneer and naan I want.
Good chai, you do your own sweetening and milking.
My stomach and Tandoor's food tend to quarrel after I eat here. But really, if you can't handle Indian food at its worst, do you really deserve it at its best? -
Review from Donna W.
Oakland, CA
If you go during lunch, you could add a star, but I went for dinner and was a bit disappointed.
I had lamb and potatoes and naan (I was a bit put off by the fact that you have to order your naan and rice separately--someone has said that's standard fare for Berkeley but everywhere else I've ever gone for Indian food, that is NOT the case). The main dish was about $6-7 and the naan $2. I could count the pieces of lamb (which should NEVER) be the case in my dish. They were out of gulab jamin, which made me a bit sad.
This place would be a better deal at lunch because for the same price as a main dish, you get rice, naan and chick peas. Totally worth it in that respect. But the servers were nice and it came in a decent amoutn of time. -

Oakland, CA
Solid food and more, at good prices. I've been here a few times when a good friend lived close by, and a few times since she moved although less often.
Normally we do take out, and it's a super deal. The food is tasty, although I cannot recommend anything in particular as I've not had a repeat order that I can remember. Everything has been great, straight forward but not bland. Be sure to check out their specials, I've found some good things there.
If you're in the area try it out, especially if you're looking for some quick takeout yet a tasty meal with friends (perhaps in front of the TV watching battlestar galactica?) -

I went during lunch and the place was so cute! The staff was super friendly and super fast (then again, it was a late lunch and there were only 2 other people in the restaurant).
My boyfriend and I ordered the egg curry and the chicken tikka masala. They were both really good and the naan was PERFECT! I came here as an attempt to find butter chicken, but ordered the tikka masala since I couldn't find it on the menu. The lady working there was really nice about showing us the FREE tea and drinks, etc, etc. And the owner (I think) was really patient about us making our order.
I haven't been here for dinner, but I heard the breakfast is pretty delicious. -

TANDOOR KITCHEN IS SO GOOD!
I'm one of those peoples that always orders chicken tikka masala, but I can't help it. I feel like this restaurant is overlooked by people who think Naan 'n' Curry and House of Curries is the cream of the crop; but maybe if people ventured a little further down Telegraph they would agree that this is the best Indian restaurant in the South end of Berkeley.
Plus, the owner and cooks always recognize you. Sometimes they see me quite often (and for all you Tandoor lovers, you know exactly what I mean when all you want to do is eat Tandoor every day but can't just because they know who you are and you don't want to be judged).

I really wanted to give Tandor Kitchen three stars but I couldn't.
I saw their lunch specials in the window, Chicken Tikka Masala plate with naan, garbanzo beans, and rice, decided to give them a try. I also ordered a mango lassi.
What the guy served me was really nicely presented. The rice being a dam in the middle of the plate, separating the chicken (with seasoning sprinkled on top) from the beans. And one HUGE piece of naan, piping hot!
But looks can be deceiving sometimes. I noticed there were only 5 Lego block sized chunks of chicken in my dish!!! From all the Indian places I ordered from, I have NEVER had such a small portion in my life! And the price was comparable to other places. The garbanzos were nicely seasoned but nothing too out of the ordinary. The white rice was pretty bland. And the naan, oh it made me sad, no flavor to it at all! It reminded me more of middle eastern flatbread (NOT pita bread, completely different!) than naan. And the mango lassi, not the best I had, plus I discovered a few chunks of the yogurt that weren't mixed in well enough into the drink.
I also inquired about the chai thermos at the one end of the restaurant. He handed me a mug and I went to try it. I am a HUGE fan of chai tea and I have Indian friends who make it for me at least a few times a month. This tea was way too strong for my liking and I am one of those people who leaves tea bags in the cup until I finish the last drop!
Walk the few blocks down and dine on Naan n' Curry instead if you are craving Indian Food along Telegraph. At least they give you enough chicken chunks in the Chicken Tikka Masala AND the naan really does tastes like naan! Or go to Currylicious and great some REALLY tasty chai! -

New Hope, PA
Cheap standard panjabi food at low prices. The saag gosht/saag chicken (ask for it spicy and it will be extra hot) is tasty and the chole gosht will surprise you.
Stay away from the chicken tikka masala unless you like bland food. Ask for it extra spicy and it will pass.
As for the curry chicken review... real curry chicken is always dark meat cooked with the bone and is generally simmered for a while. -

When my labmates and I want to get a special lunch, we hop in a car and pick up some food from Tandoor Kitchen. While some of the dishes are bad (don't ever ask for them to make Chicken Vindaloo, which is not on the menu), there are some excellent dishes. We usually order the Chicken Boti and Paneer Masala (and a side of garlic naan for me!). The Boti is white breast meat, so that is a huge plus! The masala sauce is very rich and creamy.
The owner is very friendly. One of my labmates is a regular, and he is always greeted warmly. This is a relatively inexpensive establishment with some quality food choices. -

I'm not a connoisseur of Indian food, but I eat it occassionally and enjoy it immensely. I've been to the Tandoor Kitchen and I likey.
Service - good. The owner manages the ordering process and is knowledgable, nice, and efficient.
Food - good. The Lamb curry was very spicy in a good way, and the tandoori chicken cubes were yummy/juicy/flavorful. The paneer was meh. could have had more flavor
Price - awesome. the entreees are decent size and only $6. $4 for vegetarian dishes. Free Chai tea.
I'm a big fan. Its good food for a great price, and and enjoyable, low stress endeavor. I recommend. -

I don't know much about Indian food and I haven't tried too much stuff on their menu but I still think this place deserves a good rating.
Compared with the cheap Indian delivery places in Berkeley and the other Indian places on Telegraph Tandoor Kitchen is great. Their food is better, the prices are the cheapest of any place around the Cal campus and I have looked. The service is good and the staff is real nice, maybe because they're never crowded.
Big fan of their veg curry, chicken tikka masala, and most of their apps. Lunch specials are great too! -

I am officially one of the first 5 customers ever at Tandor Kitchen. for that alone, I am requesting that the name here be spelled correctly, Tandor - not Tandoor.
this place is remarkable. the owner's name is Ali and he's a great guy. they have expanded the business and added an upstairs as well as coffee/drinks. great food, great people, great prices and a great street corner
if you like pakistani food ...there's absolutely no reason why you would not like this place. tikka masala, awesome. sometimes they have nihari and haleem which is impeccable too
since graduating i have moved away from the greatest university on planet earth...but i can only hope that ill get to eat at Tandor about 20 more times before i die -

Berkeley, CA
When I came into the restaurant, I was told by a loyal customer that this food was fairly authentic. However, according to my naive taste, this place was definitely on the lower end when compared to Vik's and Royal Indian Cuisine just down the street. I was getting take-out for dinner, and although the service was great (they let me try one of the sides that I was wavering on), I found their portions to be small and their dishes to be a bit too spicy for my taste.
I ordered the garlic naan, tandoori catfish, and chicken tikka masala. The fish was a bit too spicy on the outside, but it was quite tasty on the inside. The garlic naan was much too strong for me, while the chicken was just average. The desserts, baklava and mango lassi, were pretty good, so be sure to give them a try. -

Just tried out this place and I must say that I was pretty impressed with the lamb byrani -- it is flavorful, with a lot of lamb, spicer, and really tender. Really the best lamb byrani that I have had in the East Bay. I liked everything I ordered.

oookay... so this place has gone up in decor but way down down down in taste of food.
garlic naan-WAY TOO GARLICKY... it's kind of unique in that the garlic is in the middle but it's sort of like eating a spoonful of minced garlic with every bite. Also, the naan was very greasy and kind of small. no bueno.
lamb karahi--underspiced! wth. i even had to ask the guy to make it spicier... and even after that, it still tasted bland. one of the reasons i LIKE indian food is because it is spicy. and... it is definitely not spicy here. so disappointed. not to mention the portion size wasn't that great.
I used to like this place in college but I'm moving on now. Although it's open all the time, I would rather wait for a better tasting Indian place to open (i.e. Flavors of India).
AND THEN... while eating, I heard someone having singing lessons or trying to karaoke or something upstairs... He was trying to sing this ne-yo (mad) and it echoed throughout the whole restaurant. really uncomfortable and awkward...
i'm not sure i can give any good reasons to come here anymore. i don't think that i would come back here for convenience or price. it has just gotten that bad.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My friends and I LOVE this place. The staff is super friendly and tend to remember their patrons. I think everything on the menu is very tasty, well portioned, and fairly priced. Try the garlic naan and sip on the delicious chai tea they have out. Very casual and close to campus=good lunch. Some of my friends used to eat there 2x a day! Everyday! They must be doing something right.

The prices are pretty reasonable here. You order at the counter so the service is pretty fast and efficient. My friend paid only seven bucks for her meal, mine was about ten bucks but I was stuffed. The garlic naan is to die for. Loved it. You can smell this place outside which is why my friend and I stopped here in the first place. The location is pretty good too. My wrap was a bit spicy, but otherwise, a decent place for a decent amount of food.

Update: November 2010:
Tandoor Kitchen is closed! It is now another restaurant with pricier food and not as much comfort. Boo. :(
--------------------
I stumbled into this place by accident, becuase I was so hungry that I would eat just about anything. Tired and starved, I walked up to the counter and asked about their dinner dishes. I'm not too sure if it was the owner or manager who took my order, but whoever it was, her was the nicest ever to me, and offered me a great dish for a better price, and a complimentary cup of tea. (He must've seen my exhaustion!)
I ordered the tikki masala dinner dish, and it was definitely worth it. For cheaper than other places, the dish great chicken, rice, garbanzo beans, and a piece of naan.
This is a MUCH better eatery than Naan and Curry further up on Telegraph. It's a more relaxed and a CLEANER environment, with better food. Definitely recommend. -

I LOVE the paneer tikka masala at naan and curry but find that 1) it upsets my stomach and 2) eating it makes me smell like smokey naan. I literally have to plan my evening/day around eating it. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my stomach felt dandy and my hair was not smelly after eating here. The paneer tikka masala wasn't as tangy as I like it and the garlic naan was too oily, but the meal was still very good. I really want to go back to try the chicken tikka masala sandwich I saw on the menu!
