to sate the jetlag-induced hunger and impetuosity, i ate- nah, inhaled, the half-pound ahi-limu poke in the car but brought a pound of it to mom/dads in this recent visit to hawaii.
that it was my first informal meal is appropriate [briny, and sweet and silken and protein rich and crunchy [from the limu] that made my tummy smile...after the bouncy plane ride close to honolulu, how better to tell your mouth that it's no longer in albuquerque?
When I can't decide what to make for dinner, I go to Tamashiro's for the freshest fish inspiration. Yes, its tiny. Yes, it smells like fish. Yes, you should consider it an adventure (Frogs included). The adventure starts when you park across the street at the church and try to jaywalk to Tamashiros. Luckily, the drivers are usually cool and they will let you across.
Typically, I get the makings for sushi (Hamachi and Toro are our favorites, if they have it) but baring that, it might be lobster, pipi or even squid. I am always a hero at home when I bring home something wrapped in the pink paper of Tamashiro. I can also get flying fish roe here, in the refrigerator up front.
Still looking for a frog recipe (besides frog legs) because I don't know why they sell live HUGE frogs. I'm afraid if I brought one of those bad boys home, it would eat my Jack Russell terrier. I mean, they are HUGE.
Besides fish I DO pick some ginger and thai peppers (the only place besides the farmers market where I can find them). They sell banana leaves consistently too. They have some basics, but they also have some "harder to find" items. Its a tiny little place, amazing what they pack in there.
Essentially, Tamashiro's is one of my favorite food places on the entire island. If they had one in my neighborhood, I would be there everyday.
Great Fish Mkt. Everything is very fresh.
STILL GREAT AFTER ALL THESE YEARS
Tamashiro's isn't a market, it's an institution, a tradition, and a must visit destination for any seafood enthusiast. They have fresh fish, oysters, limu, and on my most recent visit live frogs!
I usually pass on the amphibians and head straight to the poke counter. Ahi limu, ahi shoyu, tako madako, tako limu, crab poke, crab lite poke, taegu, seaweed salad, smoked aku, the list just keeps going on and on. I usually grab some Hawaiian salt and and extra handful of limu and gild the lily on their already delicious poke.
I also love their t-shirts which I proudly wear to represent my love for this place on the mainland.
Don't ever change Tamashiro Market!
You want Seafood? Go to Tamashiro's. Live Crab, Clams, Lobsters, Prawns and Oysters. You bag your own. Seasonal whole fish, Akule, Aku, Opelu, Menpachi, Uhu, Onaga, whatever the fishermen and divers catch, Tamashiro's will sell it and you will buy it FRESH. Also get your Mahi, Ahi, Ono, Opakapaka, and Opah filets.
One of the biggest, freshest poke selections on the island. They make the best poke at Tamashiro's. You can taste the fish, they don't mask it with lot's of sauce. IT'S UNREAL! I usually end up eating the poke straight from the container in my car, in the parking lot.
They also sell homemade filipino deserts and hard to find grocery items. The bood bood(sounds like hood hood) wrapped in banana leaf or is it ti leaf, I don't know how to spell but it's delicious.
Although I live in the mainland, Tamashiro Market has been an essential part of growing up for me... My step dad lived in Hawaii for 25 years, and from our initial visit to Hawaii, this has been a mainstay of our food stops for as long as I can remember...
I feel like a kid in candy store once we walk in... A beautiful and fresh array of poke salads, sashimi, and of course all the seafood that you can imagine. To this day, I try my best to send friends and family who are visiting Hawaii for the first, second, or third time here... It is an experience like no other... (for your tastebuds and your heart).
Walk in HUNGRY, Walk out HAPPY!
Good but not great. If you want fresh whole fish only Chinatown and beat this place.
They have an outstanding selection of Poki/Sashimi here. My favorites would have to be the ahi shoyu and tako limu. Back in the day my mom would shop here for the fish, crab, fresh shrimp, and clams. Needless to say this is my family's favorite market for seafood.
So the fish markets at chinatown are closed and you need to pick up a bunch of sushi grade fish for a party at the last minute but... you're a tourist and you're driving around without a clue.
Easy. You find a place that has the freshest fish this side of the Pacific. This place saved us and provided the party with a platter of salmon and tuna toro sashimi. The freshness is on a par with anywhere else I've tried in this big wide world.
Roommate and I tried Tamashiro's on poke and beer Friday last week because it's really well-reviewed, but we weren't impressed (or even happy about it). When you go into the market, it's definitely fishy, a great sign for people who want fresh seafood! You can get lots of different shellfish and whole fish, live or not, which I'm sure are great, but we were more interested in poke. Got some kimchee tako, green onion ahi, and spicy ahi, our staples, and just weren't very into it. The spicy wasn't very spicy and the tako wasn't very kimchee-ey, and even though I had the girl behind the counter throw some shoyu on the green onion poke, it was still really meh. I was so disappointed because I'd heard such great things. Maybe it was the "new guy's" turn to make the poke?
One of those places that have to be experienced if you're on Oahu, and you love seafood. I always recommend Tamashiro's to my friends from the mainland that ask about places to eat during their trip to Hawaii, and want to experience something new.... cuz the Poke bar is off the chain!
Ho bruddah, prepeah yoself cuz garanz da poke goin broke da mouth!
If you are going to buy stuff other than seafood here I would ask you why? But if fish is what you want GREAT fish is what you will get. Tamashiro's offers so many great, different types of fish and seafood it is difficult to list. Rest assured if you are looking for the freshest fish around I think it will be extremely difficult to even come close anywhere else. Good Job Tamashiro!!!!
Don't mind the dude talking to himself, with plastic bags tide to his belt loops, he's just here to get some poke.
Why?
Why wouldn't he? This is the place for seafood if you are in the King Street/Kalihi area. Maybe you got bored at Bishop Museum...or...seeing all the exhibits made you hungry for some damn seafood...well, good thing this was close by.
Whether it's poke, or fresh oysters or produce you want, you can get it here. However, the last time we got oysters, some of them were as big as my palm! Try sucking that down without gagging.
And if you do my number is...
Love this place! It's a hole-in-the-wall fish market, but you get quality seafood! LOVE THE POKE!
The big crab should be a landmark!
Love their poke!
As a kid I used to love going to this store because there's a big red crab on the sign outside, and because there's live crab and lobster tanks to look at.
I still think it's fun to look at the live seafood, as well as the dead. Hehe. Last time I went there was a bunch of really big nenue for sale, huge boxes of blue crab on ice, and a poke bar (10 kinds? to choose from). I was going to buy spicy tuna for my fiance, but they were all out; the tray was scraped almost clean! It must be good there.
This is one of the few places that regularly sells fresh luau leaves (for lau lau or squid luau). I really appreciate the rare, interesting, and unusual "ethnic" produce Tamashiro's has like araimo/daisheen, lemon grass, small chili peppers (the kind to make chili pepper water), ogo, and lots of different types of chinese/southeast asian greens that I don't know the names of, not sold in regular supermarkets.
I was happy to see they sell tobiko (flying fish eggs) for sushi in very small containers (3 tablespoons?). I will buy them from Tamashiro's next time I make spicy tuna because last time I wasted a lot from the smallest package available at Don Quijote.
On the corner of King Street and Palama Street, below the big red crab, Tamashiro Market is the ONLY place if you want the freshest, highest quality seafood. Every year I special order a case of the largest King Crab Legs I can find and they are the only ones that have it...The other seafood places only have the skinny ones. I love to buy the clams...so plump and juicy...that's because they are so fresh!
They pride themselves on having the freshest sashimi and will stand behind their quality. It is a family run business with great ethics and price.
I love watching the men come in and walk out with the BIG SMILES...they got their sashimi, poki, oysters or whatever treat and now can go home and enjoy or meet up with the "boys" and drink,,,you know what.
They have parking in front of the building or in the parking lot across the street
The staff is knowlegeable and courteous...Definitely the place for all your seafood needs!
