Appetizers: 5 Nan bread and dipping sauces.
Main Meal: 5 - curried chicken and vegetables. YUMM!!!

I love me some Indian food!
When I was a wee lil lass, a good friend/neighbor who was Indian, used to feed me all sort of yummy, and vegetarian dishes from Califlower Subzi, to Mutter Paneer, to onion baked Naan.
I've tried a few places in the city, but this place seems to be the best in terms of bringing back the nostalgia of my days in Elementary/Middle school and always eating my friend's family out of house and home!
Tried the special, it was a veggie subzi, forget the exact name, but it was delicious! And the Chicken Tikki Masala! Yum!
They have great fruity drinks too! And the service is wonderful!
The great thing about Indian food is that you can eat it with your vegetarian friends, and not worry about being full or not. The food is phenomenal and spiced just right! It's a great culture/cuisine, and this place "Tamarind" is great!
Enjoy!
the best thing about the place is the breads. the aloo paratha is quite good.
the main courses are rather bland. its hard to believe that this is an indian restaurant. they use really fresh ingredients but they are so light handed with the spices. i can't say the food is bad but i certainly wouldn't come back here if i had a craving for indian food. if you don't mind americanized indian then this place will just suit you fine. service is really good here though, they really check on you frequently. the main entrees arrive surprisingly fast, so fast that you wonder if they might be pre-fab ready to reheat.
what really surprised me was that when they sit you down and bring out the chutneys and pickled onions there is no pappadam with it. then i'm reading the menu and notice that they charge you 3 bucks for papadam. who the hell charges you for papadam? thats about as shocking as when i first ate in toronto chinatown and they charged me for a bowl of rice. 20 years later and it's standard practice in most places to charge you extra for rice (i still think that's total BS by the way). so who knows maybe in 20 years it'll be standard to charge you for papadam everywhere. and in other places it'll be standard to charge you extra if you want pre-dinner bread baskets, tap water, and napkins.
Good Indian food in my opinion. They have a variety of curry sauces to choose from. Lamb curry is probably my favorite, and the portion comes with a lot of rice to fill you up. Service is friendly and the lighting is dim. Good place for take out if you don't want to sit there by yourself.
Not a fan of the fact that naan is not free.
Lovely restaurant with fresh-, healthy-tasting food--not quite as decadent as some other Indian food I've had. Beautiful on the inside, great outdoor seating, and fast and attentive wait staff. I wouldn't call the food bland, but it's lighter than what you're probably used to.
My friend and I went here because there was a sign in the window that said all entrees were 50% off and we're suckers for a good bargain.
We got the shrimp and chicken fritters as an appetizer and I got the chicken tikka masala and my friend got the chicken makhni for lunch. These entrees were very average. I think the best part of the meal was the chutney that came with the meal!
The service was actually really good as the servers were very attentive, but this did not make up for the mediocre food.
Nothing good to say about the cooking here.
Maybe bc i live right around the corner from Tamarind i cant think of it as anything special, but somehow I've only been here once and while it wasnt bad i just never made my way back. I remember the food being pretty good and the place clean with a small outdoor seating in the summer.
Yummy Indian that got the approval of my friend. I'm sold!
I am deeply critical of restaurants especially if they screw with traditional dishes while NOT labeling themselves as a fusion restaurant :-)
Case in point Tamarind serves Biryani cooked with Broccoli, Bell peppers and Lima beans. UGHHHHHHH ! I cannot for the life of me figure this out !
For delivery, I usually just order the Tikka Biryani minus the broccoli which is great with raita ( yoghurt dish)
Whats Good:
* Chick Peas with Spinach
* Lamb Bhuna
* All their Breads ( Naans, Rotis etc)
The Chicken dishes are alright.
Delivery service is decent ( they don't store customer phone numbers) and the in-house service is also fair.
The ambience inside is actually good, spacious interior and they have outdoor sidewalk seating. Just don't come looking for authentic Biryani :-)
An impulsive and lazy decision to have an early dinner out brought us to Tamarind. Not only did it sate our craving for Indian food, it met the distance criteria as well. It was right across the street, same block, how awesome is that?! Perfect, right? The menu had enough variety to keep us from deciding right away and the food came so fast, we thought they were bringing the papaddum and not the the entrees, when the waiter came out of nowhere, about 5 minutes after we ordered. Two lassis, a rather unorthodox tikka biryani (tandoori chicken tikkas, capsicum/bell peppers, beans and broccoli), lamb mughlai, two rasmalais and a kulfi pista later, we are finally sated and completely satisfied with our meal. It was unexpectedly good. The only odd thing was that they didn't serve us any papaddum while we ordered our food, but then again, when the main course is served within 5 minutes or ordering, who needs appetizers anyway?!
