WOW!  This lady does not sell tamales, she sells heaven in a wrapper. I've had tamales all over 116 and on Roosevelt Ave. None can compare. The pork tamale is juicy, moist, just the right spicy, just the right amount of meat. It's probably one of the best food in a wrapper in the world.

And it's $1.25!  By the way, you might not see her on 116. She is usually surrounded by customers and she is small. Just look for a bunch of people on 116 right off 3, towards lex.

    Dear Tamale Lady,

Today officially changed my life. There is barely anything edibe to eat in E. Harlem but Kennedy's Fried Chicken, so finding you has been a dream come true. There you were on the northwest side of 116th & 3rd Ave with a little steaming bucket of goodness. No frills, no sign, just a bucket of tamales with three to choose from - mild, spicy and mystery tamale. Where else can you get a quality meal for only $1!

You're tamales are my new obsession.

    Sincerely,
    Chad

Dos tomales con pollo, por favor.
    Picante?
    Si. Gracias, señora.

Mush up your tomale with your plastic fork. Eat. Enjoy. Practice your Spanish by confessing your undying amor to the Tamale Lady on 116th and 3rd.

Not sure which tamale lady this review is referring to as there is a woman on the northwest side of 116th & 3rd Ave. who sells a variety of tamales including rojo and verde with chicken or pork.  She does a variety in a green plantain wrapping ($2) rather than corn husks, which are extremely good if rather greasy.  The only vegetarian version that I have known her to have is the spicy cheese ($1), which is very good, but too spicy for me.  Her portions are also rather sizeable and they are pretty delicious.  Note: these are sold by a few different ladies, so the same person is not always there, but the tamales are the same.  They are not there in the summer as they sell their tamales on the beach.

The other woman works on the southwest corner of the same streets.  She has smaller tamales with spicy chicken, non-spicy chicken (rojo, I think) and cheese that is not spicy, but which doesn't really have all that exciting of a flavor.  All of hers are $1.  She is a very sweet woman and even gave me her number last time and said that she would bring me as much as I want if I called as I no longer live in the neighborhood.

If you want to make sure to get what you want and get it hot, you should try to get there well before 11am as by noon they are both usually gone.  Also, I don't eat meat, so I have only tried the masa/corn part of a meat variety when I was desperate for a tamale, but had no cheese at hand, and I go by my husband's opinion who does eat meat.

I walk by this woman every day and buy her $1 tamales. She has a chicken verde and a spicy cheese tamale. That's it. Nothing else. Sooooo damn good! She's sweet and she works hard, if you get there in the morning... you'll see her with her little grandma cart with a pot of tamales.
