10 reviews for Tallac Museum & Historic Site
A very nice stop for a historical visit on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Three main buildings and many other restored to their 1800-early 1900 state. Wonderful grounds to walk around. I especially like the promenade with the ruins of the old casino.
Two original boat houses are also standing, and on one you can still see the rails going out in the lake used for the boat launch back then.
Some very nice gardens and one of the homes has a nice rock waterfall garden with many plants.
Many trails in the area, and the hiking is easy, flat, and very scenic.
Advice: be sure to get a site guide, so you can plan your time there.
My sister got married at Valhalla last month, and it was a gorgeous wedding venue! The building is perfect for a lovely ceremony, and the grounds are stunning! The caretaker is extremely helpful...all in all a fantastic experience!

Very nice Museum and Historic Site!
Very easy parking!
We walked around the grounds, and went to the Museum where we saw a video of the history of the resort, and toured the rooms available here.
I picked up some hand outs describing local animals, birds and reptiles...perfect for the kid in all of us!
Wonderful craftsman cabins...I hope to return and tour the Pope home.
Also, the beach here was the best I saw in the area...another time!!
A must do in the South Lake Tahoe area!!

right near camp richardson, they just finish remodeling the place, every where look well maintained. I love the pond and kazeboo. Easy access by bike from Pope beach.
Tallac Historic Site is pretty cool. We didn't have a whole lot of time to see everything but what we did was fine enough. I'm giving you info that I happen to pick up (a pamphlet), though there is some info online too.
Tallac Historic Site is three early 20th century retreats of SF socially elite families and you can walk around the area for FREE. The three estates are: The Baldwin Estate, The Pope Estate, and the Vahalla Estate.
The Baldwin Estate: Dextra Baldwin McGonagle built this rustic log-style home in 1921. It's no the museum for the Tallac Historic Site as well as the store & info center. FREE to go inside, just it opens at 10AM. We all got to see a 13-min film about the 3 estates which was nice.
The Pope Estate-The original portion of this house was constructed in 1894, w/ extensive additions & improvements throughout the yrs. Guided tours of this exquisitely-styled home held everyday but Mon at 11am, 1pm & 2:30pm. Tickets are $5 ea.
The Vahalla Estate-You can stroll the grounds, but the buildings are only open for special events. When we went Mon 9/3/07 there was a Tibetan Festival so we got to walk into the main building. I used the bathroom there. Call 530-541-4975 for more info on Valhalla events.
The Tallac Historic Site is managed by the US Forest Service & operates in partnership w/ the Tahoe Heritage Foundation, which supports the restoration & preservation of the site.
We also went to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center that's a good 10 min walk on a trail or you can drive there. Then you can take another 10 min walk on the Rainbow Trail to see the Stream Profile Chamber which is very cool. Many trout & other underwater wildlife that's you can see from huge glass windows. Open at 8am and closes 30 min before the visitor center.

Very cool historic site of estates owned by really rich folks in the early 1900's. You can take a cool hike from here to the steam profile. You are also right on the beach and have some very cool views.
I highly recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys historic sites and really pretty views.

Love, love, love this place! I have been going since I was knee high and never miss a chance to visit if I am in the area. Great historic homes and a beautiful view of the lake.

Having watched the gradual restoration of this place over the years, I've found, makes hiking here even more rewarding. If I'm ever up in the Tahoe area, I always make the time to stop and explore the beautiful and fascinating area.

Very easy to get to, with ample parking. The Visitor Center/museum is free. The Pope House tour happens 3x a day and is $5 p/p. We arrived to late for the tour, but enjoyed walking the grounds and checking out the Visitor's Center. The site is right next to one of my favorite beaches as well! Parking here is free and much easier than the madness at the Pope Beach lot!

Tallac Museum and Historic Site is a great place. You can wander along and check out how the wealthy vacationed in the early 1900's. I would have given this four stars however - the site has several restrooms - clean and well kept. AND the beach is gorgeous - sandy, awesome views and its dog friendly (one of three SANDY dog beaches I found in Tahoe).
