The outside of Talay Thai truly doesn't do this restaurant justice. It looks grungy, located next to a 711 with occasional bums out front offering to wash your windows. The inside isn't very impressive, either, very simple, nothing extravagant like you would find at Lana Thai, but the food is great.
I've tried a few of the dishes, Larb Gai is by far my favorite, though. I've never really tried anything like it before going to Talay. It's ground chicken with all of these delicious spices (I can't even describe how amazing it is so I'm not going to try) and there's cabbage on the side that you scoop the delicious plethora of flavors into and eat like a little incredible taco. It's about 8 bucks and totally worth it. I wish I worked near there so I could get it for lunch every day.
The chicken skewers are also pretty tasty, they're on the appetizer menu. Their Panag Curry is good, I usually get it with chicken. Their Pad Thai isn't too impressive, I think it's too saucy but if someone else orders it I'm happy to have some. Their garlic fried rice and holy fried rice are yummy if you like fried rice. Probably some of the best fried rice I've had.
Overall, it's inexpensive, has very quick service, and most of the dishes are pretty tasty.
The waitresses can seem a bit bitchy, though. They've warmed up a lot since I've become a regular, but at the beginning they definitely give off a bit of a rude vibe, although it's not enough to ruin the experience.
This is a little hole-in-the-wall restaurant that I had heard good things about. I'm no Thai food expert, but I enjoyed it.
Don't be surprised when you walk in, the decor is nothing to brag about, and the tables are there only to serve their purpose.
It was a little while ago that we went, so I can't remember exactly what it was that I ordered. But I do remember it being pretty good. I guess I would rate higher, but I really don't know that much about Thai food.
The service was good too. The little lady, who I think may be the owner, was very nice and attentive. Food came out quick, like we ordered and we were never left wanting.
I enjoyed it. Will be returning in the future. If you're looking for Thai, give it a try.
WORST FOOD AND SERVICE EVER. the waiter yelled at me for ordering hot sauce and the food was really not tasting good. wouldn't recommend going there
Normally not a big fan of Thai restaurant, but this one is manageable, because it doesn't the contain the immensely strong "Thai food aroma'. The service here make this place a winner; the server will take their time to help you understand the menu and make sure they got it down correctly. The food here is decent as well, that's means a lot coming from me because I normally "refuse" to eat at a Thai restaurant. That's a extraordinary feat accomplished here.
When I used to work nearby, I frequented this place a lot. Two days ago I dropped by with my wife and ate there.
Quality has slipped a little bit, but overall still good. I noticed that they've started to add things to the dishes that isn't listed on the menus, so if you don't like some vegetables, be sure to ask the waiter about it.
Thai Siam in Ballard is still my preference for thai food.
I had an experience here today that's rating-worthy. Ordinarily I like this place well enough -- sure, they've gotten my order wrong before, and the service can be pretty lackadaisical for a place this tiny -- but overall the food is fine and their stuffed chicken wings are a real treat.
However, I've gotta say, I have a serious problem with being charged $9.00 for a lunchtime portion of chicken soup that I order for take-out. Honest to Pete, I'm no cheapskate, but I've had just as good for more reasonable prices and in more expensive locations. This place is good, but they ain't all that, especially these days. So, there is definitely a mismatch between pricing and quality at this restaurant and it would be well to be forewarned before stopping in.
That said, if you enjoy Thai food and convenience is a more predominating factor for you than reasonable pricing, then I must say that there's no knocking the overall quality and tastiness of the fare -- I've never had something poorly prepared or unappetizing here, and when they've made a mistake on my order, a new plate was out in a jiffy.
So, while the restaurant on 200th isn't exactly swanky - actually, it's tiny, has unfortunately drab tables/carpet/whatever, and often has creepy men sitting in the back corner - their Tom Kha Gai soup is delicious, and that's enough reason to come here. It's a bit inconsistent from visit to visit, but I always order a star above whatever I would usually get (I'm a baby and would ordinarily order 2 out of 5 stars - I order 3 here) and it comes out pretty tasty.
This is the only restaurant in all of Lynnwood that I can stand to eat at.
The following review is based on the places convenience and area, not just the food.
Talay Thai has decent food. I do get my take outs there every once in a while because it is so close to my work. The lunch deals are great. If you eat in, your food will be served with soup.
I like the service a lot here. It's fast and efficient. It's a family-run business and applaud them for being in Lynnwood for so long.
I don't know what it is, but I think due to the location the owners have decided to limit their menu to less traditional Thai foods. I don't really want to go in detail about how their food is because a lot have reviews have mentioned it already. However, I will tell you that I frequently get either their Talay Thai Curry with Tofu or Holy Basil with Tofu.
If you work around Lynnwood, and you are hungry for a Thai food, this is the place.
Hands down the best Rama chicken and Pad Thai to be found in this town. A hole in the wall that you must try.
They do take out and are by my office- AND are located right off 44th & 196th fast food strip mall land. Stopped by here for lunch- didn't know this place existed but someone had a menu at work. Lunch specials (11:30-3pm)are mainly $7.30 and come with rice. The regular menu is about a dollar more and don't come with rice.
Talay Thai has a huge selection of veggie based dishes- More choices then I have seen probably anywhere else. I ordered the Hot Garden- which is on the lunch menu as well. It was a great mix of veggies and lots and lots of tofu in a spicy (red pepper) based sauce. I didn't really eat very much of the rice- it wasn't a standout.
I concluded that this place will be a great substitute once in a while to the lean cuisines and homemade sandwiches I bring to work. They use quality ingredients and are quick. I will have to try more to really know if they are good with their flavors.
First things first. This is a jewel of the Lynnwood area. Anybody who says differently feels ripped off by the portions. Which with some dishes - like the prawn dish - its a definite concern.
But I really think the phad thai is special here. It's definitely not traditional but it has an extra peanut flavor in the sauce that makes it damn yummy son. The Stuffed Chicken wings will knock your socks off, really all the chicken dishes are tasty. I'd stay away from seafood or high end dishes, they always seem to be a rip-off.
As a former resident of Fremont, I am spoiled on Thai food. If you don't know, Fremont has an unusual aggregation of Thai restaurants in a small area. All of them are very good.
Since moving to Lynnwood, I have been looking for good Thai and I believe that I have found a good enough Thai place, considering the area.
My boyfriend and I go here every other week for lunch and always get Phad Thai and one of the other lunch dishes. The Garlic Chicken is pretty good, so is the Talay curry. Good portions and their rice (both brown and white) is pretty good. I mean, it's rice, how can you go wrong.
Their Thai Iced Tea is perfect on a hot day, it's smooth and a little spicy. (Not hot, but flavorful.) Very good.
I've had better Thai Food, but it was in Seattle. In fact, if Talay Thai were located in Seattle, I'd drop a star. However, for a Lynnwood establishment (read: I don't expect much), this is a fine place to lunch when I'm tired of Subway (read: chain restaurant, fast food).
My baseline dish that I judge every Thai place on is phad see iew. Talay Thai does a decent job making this dish. The meat portion is generous, but the overall execution is unremarkable.
I've also had the Rama because I love peanut sauce. This peanut sauce tasted good, but it had a very gelatinous texture. It looked like I was served a peanut butter jellyfish, but I'll eat anything, and the dish was alright.
I'll keep going here for lunch because I want to try some of the other menu items, and I'm a creature of convenience with an iron stomach.
Meh - the pad thai and pad see ewe were too sweet, even though I asked for them to be extra hot. Paying for a bowl of rice when my mom got curry just doesn't make sense. This place is decent and gets extra points for being one of a handful of Thai restaurants in the North End, but I've definitely had better and would rather drive to Seattle when I get my next Thai craving.
Since we have moved to Lynnwood, Talay Thai is the only place that we consistently get Thai food. I am a peanut sauce addict so the Rama Chicken and the Chicken Satay are my favorites. You also can't go wrong with the spring rolls served with a delightfully sweet sauce that compliments the vegetable filled rolls percectly. My other half loves oyster beef and garlic pork. There can be inconsistency with the spice ratings, but its never been a huge issue.
Whenever we get takeout, the proprieter (a former Montanan like me) always hands it to me and says "Home Cookin'" which always makes me laugh. I have had good Thai elsewhere, but this feels like my Thai.
best, yummiest, spiciest thai food i can find! the owner lady is hilarious and i have really enjoyed talking with her both times i've been there. she's sarcastic and in-your-face.
Like every good Thai restaurant, Talay Thai is located next to a 7-11 in a strip mall. Ok...so it's in a strip mall. Big deal. The food is good, and that's what counts.
We had the stuffed chicken wings for an appetizer -- so far, so tasty. J ordered the chicken pad thai, while I ordered the red curry with beef. Our meals came fairly quickly and were steaming hot. I sampled J's pad thai: it was very good! The red curry with beef: seemed fairly standard to me. One thing to note: I had requested 3 out of 4 stars, and either they have a VERY low spice scale, or they forgot to add 2 of my 3 stars. There was virtually no spice...rather a disappointment as my whole reason for seeking good Thai food was to find SPICE! Alas, it certainly wasn't bad -- just not quite up to my expectation.
Here's the quick and dirty breakdown:
- Good food, but make sure they know how spicy you want it.
- Fun atmosphere: You can see the kitchen! Makes it kinda loud, though.
- Don't let the location scare you off.
- Reasonable prices, decent portions.
As an above yelp-er has stated, as a former resident of Fremont, meaning I'm a Thai food expert. Moving to Lynnwood has changed my frequent Thai food dining, however I was seriously surprised with Talay Thai. Fantastic. Pannag Curry Prawns and Phad Thai was both great. Service could have been a bit friendlier but over all fast and OK. I probably will be a regular. I recommend!
Recent Edit 3/21/2009:
I ordered take out last night and spent $40 and they didn't even include a take-out container of jasmine rice. Seriously? I am...was a huge fan of this place but that kind of boiled me... So I had to drop a star.
Talay Thai has decent food. Sometimes. The meet to veggie ratio in some of the dishes seem pretty low (little meat, lots of veggies). It's also cramped, loud, and sometimes I find the service to be slow and unapologetic.
If you want good Thai food, in a place that's cleaner, quieter, and the service is that of a family restaurant... Try Thai Tunya by the Alderwood Mall.
If you're looking for good Thai food up in the north end then this is your place. The seating leaves much to be desired and will get crowded quickly which is why I feel this place is best for take out.
I read one review and that person mentioned the star rating mishaps and I can say from experience this is very true. Some days 3 star means 3 stars and other days it means 1.
I ate at Talay Thai a LOT when I worked in the area. This was many years ago. Recently, on my way home from a road trip, I decided to pop in for dinner. It was a letdown. The Tom Yum Gung was way too sweet. Our Phad Thai arrived slathered in ketchup. And the curry was watery with quite flavorless. Overall, it was a very disappointing meal.
2 Stars - So much for trying to recapture long-faded memories.
I keep saying I just "LOVE" Talay Thai but I can't remember the last time they got my order correct!! If you order 2 stars you get 5. Vice versa. Not good when you have little ones to feed.
Other then that....it's always tasty. Love me some Talay Thai Tom Ka soup!!! MMmmmmm good.
No so great. Very greasy food. It was tasty but very greasy and made me sick.
Again food was good and might work out for you if you have no problems with greasy food.
one of my biggest concerns when i moved from Seattle to mount lake terrace was finding new places to eat at, especially Thai. me and my girlfriend found this place some how and decided to roll the dice. suffice to Say it rolled snake eyes!! once i saw they had stuffed chicken wings on the menu i knew i was in good hands. this dish is very time consuming to prepare and is found on so few menus because of it. so you must order it.
the rest of the menu is all standard items, the phad thai os ok, i ordered it knowing it was going to have too much ketchup and be sweet but i was hoping to prove myself wrong. the prik king is awesome as well as the curries. oh and they have sticky rice another big bonus for me.
the service is good, and what you would expect. prices very fair and portions ample.
it ios my new favorite thai joint.
One of the best thai restaurants in the area. Their Tom Ka soup is the best I've tasted. Fresh and generous portion of mushrooms. I liked about everything I've tasted.
I didn't expect much when my friend insisted that we go here, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Their stuffed chicken wing is delicious- the only problem is that they only serve them during dinner. I absolutely love their sweet and sour chicken (not the scary pink sticky gooey stuff, but really fresh and yummy) Another thing that I really like about them is that they don't make their food very sweet- at least, not as sweet as some other Thai places around Broadway. One of the places I dearly miss in Lynnwood. I wish they'd open on up in Seattle.
First off they got my order wrong, what I received was beef curry and phad thai. The phad thai was not very good, it had too much sauce and was too sweet. The beef curry, on the other hand, was very good. I'll give them another chance - hopefully they do a little better next time.
I give this place a one star coz im big on customer service. I understand the waitress spoke very little english but i think a smile speaks for all languages as a greeting..i felt like the waitress had a bad attitude both times i went.. the food was ok very very sweet...
Very good thai in the suburbs. The Pad Kee Mao is the best around in my opinion. Quick service and fair prices. Good lunch specials.
This used to be my fiance's favorite Thai place, but he has found a new love (restaurant wise). I found it ok, but sometimes I would go home and get some weird stomach things going on. Most of time with the Tom Kha Gai soup. The Pad Thai was good when we went in the beginning, but found that they put way too much ketchup. It gave the dish an overall too vinegary taste. The Tom Kha Gai is good, but doesn't always produce the best results with me, so I don't really eat it here anymore. The Angel wings here are pretty good. They are stuffed quite nicely. The Fried rice is good, but sometimes too greasy. The Panang curry is about the only thing I love here, because it is not too sweet. The one thing that is I wish they would get right, is the spice levels. Sometimes a 3 ends up a 1, a 2 ends up a 5, a 5 ends up a 1. You get the picture. The restaurant can get very noisy especially when it gets crowded, and also because the kitchen is right there. The location is in a strip mall, tucked in between a 7-11, and hair salon. 7-11 is usually a place where you can find a lot of kooky people in front, or that one obligatory beggar in the front, but don't be worried. In terms of Thai in Lynnwood, it's good for being in Lynnwood, ya know?
