I used to live in Arlington Heights area for over 3 years (Mount Prospect and Schamburg IL).

If I wanted to eat the Katsu, I always went to this restaurant.  And I can tell you that this place is the best Katsu restaurant I ever tasted in United States.  I am Japanese and I know how to make Tonkatsu or Chicken Katsu.  I can replicate taste of Katsu at other restaurants I went to (Because all the restaturant probably make same way as me).  However, I am never able to copy this taste of Katsu and this is the katsu I used to tasted when I was in Japan.

Some reviewers said they move to the other location.  I would like to know the address of the new location so that I can go there next time I visited to Arlington Heights area (probably this coming September).

Katsu, katsu, katsu!  In search of something more ethnically adventurous in downtown Arlington Heights, I came upon Takkatsu on the Chowhound boards. The restaurant was mostly empty when we got there and a few other patrons (both w/ Asians in tow, perhaps Japanese) came in shortly after...good sign, I thought! I was a little skeptical b/c I could not detect a single Asian person who worked there, just these two older White ladies. Then I remind myself that I am in the burbs. (Sometimes I can't help my foodie snootiness! but I try not to be too prejudiced...See Ton Kiang dim sum review).

Most of the dinners come w/ a miso soup, a tiny dish of pickles, rice, and the entree which has the meat and a huge heap of shredded cabbage. The katsu sauce, housed in a large pot that sits on all the tables, was described by my friend as bbq-like and not too sweet. My friend got the chicken katsu, and I had the Kasane Katsu (layers of thinly sliced berkshire pork). Both of these were breaded and fried quite well; the breading had the perfect crunch and held its integrity against the meat without being too greasy. I found the chicken ($15), advertised as free-range and organically grown (Huh? Have I transported back to SF?), to be juicy. My pork, on the other hand was a  bit dry and lacking in flavor - somewhat disappointing given the price ($20) and the publicized pedigree. But I must say that many layers of pork added a nice dimension of texture that I haven't had before. Perhaps this is authentic tonkatsu?

While the food was simple and executed quite well, I was left a little unsatisfied - especially given the price. I'd recommend hitting this place up for lunch for a meal that is probably more characteristic of everyday Japanese food than sushi.

The best katsu house in town - We sampled their combination plate which included chicken katsu, tonkatsu and ebi fry - Deliciously light despite being breaded in panko and deep-fried.  Their katsu is accompanied by house-made tonkatsu sauce and real Japanese mustard as well as soup, pickles and shredded cabbage (eaten with tonkatsu sauce).  A visit makes for a very pricey, but true authentic Japanese dining experience.  This restaurant is frequented mostly by Japanese locals living in Arlington Heights.  For the "grandest" cut, try the kurobota tonkatsu - pork from highly marbled black berkshires akin to Kobe-style wagyu.  See above photo.

A tonkatsu (Japanese pork cutlet) specialty restaurant in Chicago suburb.  Recently moved from Green Bay Road location in Glencoe. Nicely decorated restaurant with good service.  Their katsu is pretty good, although it's not the same as Tonkatsu Wakko or YKK in Japan.  I give lots of points just for opening a restaurant based on tonkatsu, which I know many American customers don't care for.

CLOSED.  June 2008.  There is a new restaurant in its place that does a very good tonkatsu and excellent sushi.  Portions are generous and staff are friendly.
