Excellent selection ( & price)of all aged and fresh Rolled cigars!
As rarefied as old growth forest, the stretch of 9th Av between 42nd and 35th or so is the perhaps the sole surviving patch of genuinely seedy pre-Giuliani Manhattan. This dumpy cigar store fits right in.
Passing by on Christmas Eve, I popped in, figuring a couple stogies + the microbrewery sampler previously purchased = a most thoughtful gift basket for my brother. A handful of guys sat smoking cigars in a barely ventilated space. So strange to see folks smoking indoors these days! I removed a pair of $9 cigars from a glass door humidor running the length of one wall but upon placing them on the counter I spotted some primitive-looking unbanded specimens shaped like engorged pythons displayed beneath the register.
"Let me get two of those instead" I told the clerk.
"Put 'em back" he spat, even as had I started to return the two I held.
Caught up in the atmosphere, or lack thereof, I requested one of the slimmer $6 versions for myself. I watched him plastic-bag my purchase then said rudely "leave that one out, I'm gonna smoke it now".
He neatly clipped the tip and proffered a light, advising me how to do the same with my take-homes. A few puffs left me light headed and my mouth tasting like ass. Passing behind The Port Authority, I approached one of the homeless gentlemen who congregate by the soup kitchen and shelter there.
"You want the rest of this? It's a $10 cigar" I exaggerated.
"You don't want it?" he replied, his elocution reeking of mental illness.
"All yours," I replied.
That simple gesture of good will, plus the $2 tip I gave the guy at the cheese and beer store store earlier, infused me with the true spirit of Christmas generosity and, Grinch-like, my heart grew three sizes.
Merry Christmas!
