I've never actually eaten in the restaurant ... just take out and delivery ( a little embarrassed admitting I order delivery from a restaurant that's only 2.5 blocks from my apt).

As many folks know, I am NOT a fan of the Chinese restaurants in SF.  Tai Chi is one of the few Chinese places I'll order from.  In my opinion, they have the best hot and sour soup in the city.  It's a nice balance of vinegar and white pepper.  The vegetable chow mien comes with large chunks of veggies and flavorful noodles.  For an extra two dollars, you can also order your chow mien with cantonese style noodles (the really think and crispy pan fried noodles).  The beef chow fun and mu shu shrimp weren't bad either.  There are several other dishes I'd like to try, but I often play it safe by ordering what was listed above.  If I ever find the courage to venture beyond my safe dishes, I'll be sure to update!

    YIKES -- 20% PRICE INCREASE!

Tai Chi Restaurant has been my go to takeout restaurant for years now and I order from Tai Chi at least twice a week. I've always appreciated the good food and reasonable prices. No longer.

I had quite a shock tonight picking up my order -- Tai Chi has increased prices 20% across the board -- a major jump. A 5% or 10% increase to keep up with the cost of living I can understand. But 20%? That's too much. It's too bad. I predict this will cost them an equal amount of business. Time to find another restaurant for takeout.

My wife (and now daughter) and I have been going to Tai Chi Restaurant to eat for over 10+ years now when we are in San Francisco.  It's not the place we always go to eat at when we are in SF, but, we go here a lot.

I always order the General Tso's Chicken, which I love.  Their other dishes are also great, but I have ALWAYS ordered General Tso's Chicken every time I go here and usually get an order of take out to bring back home.

Great place to eat, price is decent, service is good.  I will be coming back for many more years whenever I am in San Francisco.

    I love this place!

I have yet to have eat there, but from pictures it looks welcoming.

I had family who had driven into town late, all they wanted was some great Chinese food in San Francisco.
I shopped around and found that Tai Chi was open and delivering!
The food got to my house with in 20 minutes! I was shocked!
The entrees were HUGE! There were three of us with awesome left overs for two days!
The food its self truly is amazing. I actually just placed an order from there right now because my mouth will not stop watering.

Haven't eaten in the restaurant or used delivery but the take out was easy easy. You can either order online or call and speak to someone who is intelligible and friendly.

Food was ready within the time specified (15 min) and they had me in and out of the restaurant in less than 5 minutes.

Got the vegetarian potstickers. Pretty good. Even better with the accompanying sauce. Also tried the vegetarian chow mein. Also very good  and the veggies were fresh. If you are a vegan they have Chow Fun as well.

Great neighborhood find. Thanks yelpers. Wouldn't have tried them without reading the reviews first.

We were starving after partying all New Years Eve and into the following afternoon but even in our state, we were not able to enjoy the food. The Lemon Chicken seemed like it was made out of wood chips, the Braised Green Beans were discolored and fatigued beyond recognition. The chicken dish with basil (forget the name) was almost edible but the chicken tasted strange and I could feel the onslaught of MSG that it brought on. The one saving grace was the Pork Chow Mein, which was edible- the pork tasted fresh, which is not always the case with Chow Mein dishes. We also got Veg Fried Rice which was edible as well, this dish wasn't offensive- that's probably because it tasted like nothing. Delivery was pretty quick- about 35 minutes.

I love this place. I get delivery or pick up (the decor is somewhat depressing, so I'm not sure it's a place to eat in at, that said, whatever floats your boat).

The service is phenomenal. I order online at Market and Taylor and it's ready when I arrive. Stupidly easy, and the food is great, as are their deals. Order on "http://eat24hours.com" and you'll get a free serve of Gyoza, or spicy chicken wings. Order the Gyoza rather than the wings. The Chef's special Szechwan Minced Chicken is brilliant. I'm about to go pick some up now.

I was in the mood for some good ol' chinese food. Being new to the area, we weren't sure where the heck to order from for delivery. We searched google, and sorta grub hub, and randomly selected this place.

    Pretty awesome.

    On our menu:
    Won Ton Soup
    Veggie Chow Fun
    Chicken & Green Beans
    Hunan General Tso's Chicken

I loooved the chicken & green beans. full flavored, cooked perfectly, sauce was just the right thickness.
And when asked "how spicy", they actually know what spicy means, so one dish was super spicy to me lol, but the bf loved it and loved the fact that they knew what spicy is.

quickly delivered, and reasonable price. hopefully another star to come when we try it again down the road.

This place has become my go-to for Chinese delivery.  Not only is the food great, but the people who work there are awesome.

The other day, I got locked out of my apartment, so I ordered from Tai Chi while waiting in the lobby for the locksmith.  The guy delivered the food, but when I asked for chopsticks or a fork, he apologized and said he didn't have any on him.  I was slightly annoyed (more at the fact that I was locked out of my apartment than at him or Tai Chi), but I said it was fine.  To my surprise, he showed back up at my apartment a few minutes later with paper plates & utensils.

Awesome food & even better service.  I've never actually dined in the restaurant, though, so I can't speak to any of its aesthetics or quality of service while dining in.

To continue on...I decided to explore the menu a little more and ordered the bbq ribs. They are quite good and have an interesting flavor. Four ribs for $7.25 is eh, but for two people it's a nice appetizer - more than enough meat for a whole meal. I'd get them again.

However, instead of won tons with the won ton soup they gave me noodles. I expect they did this because it was very late when i ordered and they were out of won tons. But noodles are no substitute for Tai Chi's big juicy won tons. Be warned, they do this w/o telling you. I'm mixed on the penalty for this because i ordered at about 9:15 and the place closes at 10, but an outside company does the delivery. Posting it as a public service anyway.

We have been going to Tai Chi since 1982. While the decor isn't great the food, service and friendly staff more then make up for appearances. We made a reservation for 14 last night when we flew in and our kids drove up to meet us for a family reunion and of course we all met at Tai Chi for the best dinner ever. We shared dishes from vegetarian to sizzling beef....all delicious. Parking is always a challenge but that's just San Francisco.

I had Tai Chi take out for dinner last night and it was pretty good! I'd go back for sure....I'm not a "fan" (4 stars) yet, because I like to have ethnic food a few times before knowing for sure that it's not gnarly, but... so far so good! I'll come back and up the rating after I've been there a few more times.

Their chicken and string beans and mu shu chicken were pretty tasty.... ok maybe 3.5 stars worthy.

It's just hard to give them a higher rating when I havent actually been IN the restaurant and am not familiar with the friendliness of the staff...

Oh Tai chi; since 1989, when I moved to SF, I loved your generals chicken and string beans... then you expanded and slowly went down. I had some mild revenge in my stomach from time to time but I kept coming back for the two dishes. This Sunday past, was the LAST TIME.

Oh f**k me was I paying the price, maybe I'm older and I don't have a cast iron stomach but really it's probably the fact that you don't wash your floors, kitchen surfaces, windows, (your hands?) and are using yellow dyed chicken from tyson (not certain). I don't know and I don't care any more.

Your food tastes good, but really i wish it was good clean food. It's not and I'm not gonna be blinded by wishful thinking and ignoring the obvious.

I do like the younger people at the counter.. They are very nice. Unlike the cooks which are always grumpy and scowling. Maybe that's the problem...who cares... it's over!

Hunan Mongolian Beef - This was very good Mongolian Beef with very fresh ingredients. It could have been a touch spicier but that is a mild complaint.

Hunan General Tso's Chicken - The Tso's Chicken was excellent and it was a very large portion of all chicken. I really enjoyed it. Like the beef, I would not have minded it being a touch on the spicier side. If it had been, it would probably of been the best General Tso's chicken I've ever had.

Steamed Rice - Light and fluffy.

My fortune was "An admirer is too shy to greet you."

Wow. I was surprised that every review wasn't one star. I wasn't attacked  by rats and I didn't actually get sick, but I think that is the only reason I would give it one star. They DO serve food there. I only popped in because the line at Nick's Crispy Tacos was too long and it had been awhile since I had good Chinese food. Sadly, it has still been awhile since I have had good Chinese food.

My meal was terrible, my companion's meal was terrible. It did come out quickly, but everything was somehow both bland and over salted. How do you ruin shrimp chow mein? Ask the people at Tai Chi, I'm sure they can tell you. Anything with sauce apparently comes over cooked with too much sauce. With a hot tsunami of crappy sauce. I'm all over MSG and still, couldn't finish it. My taste buds didn't want me to finish it. Even though I was pretty hungry. We declined to take our food to go. It was so bad, I would rather leave hungry and reject the food I already paid for. I rate this place below the place I went to years ago (now closed) that actually had a rodent run through the joint while I was eating my dinner. That place, up until the lone rodent marathoner sighting, actually had tasty eats.

As I was leaving I noticed a canister among the bottles and foodstuffs that had caught my eye once or twice while I was eating, upon closer inspection I saw it was Tinactin. As the can explained, it is used to treat jock itch and foot fungus. I'm not sure how to wrap this up, but to say in a city with thousands of restos and a street with a number of spots in both directions, there is no reason to eat at Tai Chi. Even if you do have athlete's foot since they can apparently help you out right at the counter.

Stumbling around the city for hours like I do, I ended up passing by Nick's Crispy's on a Tuesday and decided I'd keep on trekking. That is until I noticed the Michelin Recommended stickers in the window here at Tai Chi; usually a good sign.

I'm deducting 2-stars for the crap service I received - obviously for not looking like your typical Nob Hill patron. The difference between how I was greeted and the very following person, and every subsequent customer, was ridiculous, comical and lasted the entire experience.

The food here is on point. They have a solid menu and amazing prices. I ordered something I'd never had and it turned out delicious - chicken w/ zucchini was how it was described and it was just that.

In the area hankering for some Chinese? Give it a try.

I LOVE Thai Chi!  It is good, "clean" food.  My favorite thing about this place is that the veggies are always done just right - no soggy broccoli wilting in a puddle of sauce!  I have never eaten in the restaurant...it's in my neighborhood but it's not appealing in terms of ambiance.  It's my #1 choice for delivery, tho.  Hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city.

Favorite dishes:  Vegetable Fried Rice.  I chose brown rice and it's not what you typically expect of brown rice - it's fluffy, not gummy and there are HUGE chunks of vegetables in it, not diced up little bits.  Tofu & Chinese Vegetables is really good and so is Shrimp with Broccoli and the Braised Green Beans.

Hint:  Order on http://GrubHub.com and it always comes faster than call-in.
Bonus: If you DO call in, there is always someone who is proficient in English to talk to!

Americanized Chinese food. (Which should be totally obvious from the fact that a lot of the reviews rave about General Tso's chicken or are written by people who claim they don't usually like Chinese food.) Generous portions for the price, but not really my type of place. The dishes I tried, with the exception of the sauteed choy sum, were too sweet and had too much sauce.

Bean sauce noodles (aka "pork gravy noodles" at other restaurants or "zha jiang mien"): The $5 bowl was enough to feed one person with leftovers. The noodles were overcooked to the point of breaking upon contact with a chopstick. No two places make zha jiang mien the same, and I'm open to different styles of the dish. However, the sauce here was way too sweet for me. The fatty bits of meat drenched in sauce were off-putting, and the use of peas (instead of mung bean sprouts, slivers of cucumber, etc) was odd.

Shanghai chicken: Served as a platter half filled with diced chicken sauteed in brown sauce, half filled with crispy fried chiffonaded greens. Not sure what the greens were. They looked like basil but didn't taste like basil. The sauce was too tart for my liking.

Potstickers (4 stars): Tasty tasty! 6 huge ones for $3.50 ain't bad.

General Tso's Chicken (2 stars): Way too sweet! Claims to be spicy but isn't, and doesn't come with anything besides deep fried sugary chicken bits (no rice... no broccoli).

Szechuan Beef (3 stars): Pretty good, came with snowpeas and bamboo shoots.

Atmosphere (2 stars): No atmosphere really... but it was clean.

Service (2.5 stars): Rice costs extra. We didn't get any water, well I guess we got hot water (they called it "tea").

I'm thinking the whole experience deserves 2 stars, but based on the enormous portions I'll bump it up to 3.

I don't know if this is worth writing a full review over, but I came in here to grab something quick.  I ordered the Curry Shrimp and Chicken Fried Rice, paid them, and stepped out to handle some errands.  I came back, picked it up, and hopped into my car.  Before I escape, I tried it out and...it was pretty damn good.  Like...way better than I expected.

I got two meals out of it, and felt pretty good about the decision I made, with Yelp's help.  I can't talk about the in-restaurant service (even though the cashier ladies were really nice to me), or how the other food is, but that Curry Fried Rice...get me some of that.

So places actually charge for rice?  Guess I am just a San Fran Chinese eating rube, because back home on the ranch (NYC) I can't ever, ever recall a main course not automatically coming with rice, unless that dish was made out of noodles. I also can't recall ever paying $11 for a dish of take-out Chinese, but I am willing to learn about your West Coast customs.

My dish was pretty solid & of course I got 2 meals out of it.  Had the House Special Eggplant.  It was a bit on the sweet side, but basil-rific & the shrimp seemed fresh, chicken was plentiful.  Tea tasted particularly good, perhaps because I was wet & freezing.  Staff took my order & then left me alone, much appreciated.

Still can't help feeling like I was duped.

Despite what seems to be a recent onslaught of negative reviews, we had a perfectly pleasant time at Tai Chi, and would definitely recommend to others.

We ate in, so I can't really comment on the takeout/delivery service, but the service in the restaurant was excellent.  The waitstaff was friendly and efficient, and my water glass was always full.  The restaurant itself is nothing to write home about (beige floors, beige walls, beige tables), but whatever, I'd rather have low prices than fancy decor.

We ordered the Chef's Special for 3, which is essentially a prix fixe that includes tea, sizzling rice soup, eggrolls, a shrimp & veggie dish, hunan beef, general gao's chicken, and rice (I believe the price is $15 pp).  First of all, the portions are insane.  You will NOT leave hungry, and more likely than not, you will leave with leftovers.

Second of all, if you come wanting Americanized, flavorful Chinese food, you will be satisfied.  I see a lot of people complaining that the food here is too greasy - I didn't feel the same way - especially compared to Andy's down the street.  I'm not saying it isn't greasy - it's Chinese food after all, people - but it's not overly greasy or comparatively greasy.

Each dish was tasty and well-received by all members of our dining party.  They packed up our leftovers at lightning speed, and we went on our merry way, happy and full customers.

** EDIT TO ADD ** Best dish I've tried so far at Tai Chi is the House Special Eggplant - incredible!  Someone else posted a photo if you want to check it out :)

I ordered from Tai Chi keeping in mind the last time I placed an order with them and ordered the usual, General Tso's chicken, Tender greens with garlic sauce, and for a starter Green onion pancake with a peanut sauce.

The green onion pancake was a first for me, I imagined something with like a Thai peanut sauce and the pancakes would be steamed and white like the pancake you get with Mu Shui pork. What I ended up with was a crispy, deepfried, folded over white flower tortilla like item that had no hint of a green onion and the peanut sauce tasted like heated up Jiffy Peanut butter. The pancake was definitely over fried and I didn't finish off the order after having just one bite.

Moving on to the General............all I want to know is where is the General and what have you done with him? This is still not the same General Tso's chicken I have loved since my first taste back in the 80's. The sauce was vaguely familiar but seemed to lack that tangy flavor I remember so well. The chicken tasted like too much white pepper was used in the batter.

The Tender greens in a garlic sauce tasted great in the sense that they were cooked well but the sauce was the consistency of hot water, I did not taste any garlic.

After 23 years of dining at Tai Chi's I think maybe it's time to find another place to get my Chinese food fix.

A few things you need to know about Tai Chi's food.

    1. If you want healthy, low-salt, low-fat, low-oil, lightly-seasoned, lovingly-crafted Chinese food? This aint it. This is for your I-have-an-urge-to-mow-down-on-some-delicious-Ameri can-style-Chinese-food-gimme-gimme-om-nom-nom! What Tai Chi does right is marrying sweet+piquant in their sauces.

    2.  Unlike so many Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, Tai Chi has a surprising array of pretty good tasting entrees.  I dig that!  Don't you get tired discovering that a restaurant can only seem to make one, maybe two dishes to your liking?

    3.  This is NOT one of those San Francisco Chinese restaurants that seem to use the same sauce base in every single  dish.  Hooray!

    Onward to reviewing the food!

Appetizers - SKIP.  I've tried to pot stickers -- the filling is fail.  Steam dumplings? Same.   I've bitten into the spare ribs -- unremarkable.  Egg rolls?  Nah.  If you must have your dumplings? I'm telling you, pass and order another entree instead.

    Soup - I don't order soups, sorry.

    Entrees.  Some of my faves:

    1.  Hunan General Tso's Chicken:  the classic, Chinese-American dish done to perfection by sparing not one calorie to ensure ultimate flavor.  No veggies, just deep-fried meat in a scrumptious sticky-sweet and savory sauce. You'll wanna spoon the goopy sauce over rice, it is crack-sauce;  extra-crispy batter, tender chicken chunks *ask for white meat if you don't like thigh meat* -- and for delivery, they do make an effort to keep the chicken crispy by popping open the corner of the container. Alas, the pieces on the bottom will get soggy; nothing much can be done. Do not expect this to reheat crispy.

    2.  Orange Beef:  Another veggie-less dish (unless you consider orange peel a veggie?) dry, slices of beef with an almost crispy mouth-feel submerged in a tongue-coating, spicy, savory brown sauce.  Eat side-by-side with the General Tso's for the ultimate, oral-gasmic experience.  Heads-up for the slices of orange peel, they can impersonate slices of beef (especially when reheated) so pick em out with your chopsticks, trust me you do not wanna bite into one.  Same for the many chili peppers - you'll wanna push those over to the side or pick them out.  Another, licking-it-off-your-plate sauce.

    3.  Shredded Pork With Brown Sauce:  strands of chew-licious pork with crunchy strings of bean curd in a subtle, pleasant, not-spicy brown sauce.  A nice departure from the flavor-bomb sauces I mentioned above.

    4.  Shanghai Chicken:  if you're not familiar, this dish features chunks of chicken in a tangy brown sauce with toasted pine nuts on the right-side next to chewy, tender seaweed on the left.  Eric's makes it drier, probably healthier too, but Tai Chi gives you more sauce.  Comes with thigh meat unless you ask for breast.

    5.  Spicy Chicken with Fresh Basil:  perhaps better known as Spicy Chicken with Crispy Basil, this is the well-known Thai-spiced delight featuring slices of white meat chicken, crunchy red and green bell peppers, sweet Thai basil in a succulent sweet-and-tangy sauce.  Perhaps your favorite Thai restaurant does it better but it's well worth ordering at Tai Chi.

    6.  Dry Braised Green Beans:  a piquant dish -- definitely not for a mouth that can't take much heat.  Toasty garlic and pepper seeds tossed over crunchy beans, it's simple, it's great.

Wrapping up this novelette by offering some criticisms:

Kung Pao [AnyProtein]:  unremarkable.  The peanuts aren't ever toasted to concentrate the flavor and the sauce is much too subtle so that the bell pepper flavors dominate.  For mind-blowing Kung Pao, try Andy's.

Noodles:  I've had the Chow Mein, the Chow Fun, with black bean without... the noodle texture is fine but the flavor is very average. Noodles are not a strong suit of Tai Chi.

Mu Shi [a.k.a. Mu Shu]:  not offensive, but not particularly surprising - it's just ok.

Tender Greens with Garlic Sauce:  was okay at the restaurant but the greens lost alot of their texture upon delivery.  It comes in the white garlic sauce, not the brown.

    ***
TL;DR version:  What is Tai Chi about?  Extremely tasty, sweet-and-tangy sauces that DONT all taste the same and a surprising number of yummy entrees set Tai Chi apart and above from your typical, American-style Chinese restaurant.
Perhaps not the healthy choice but you will enjoy every calorie.  Really.

Great General Tsao's chicken and mediocre beef dish.  I heard they were great back in their hay days but have since fallen by the wayside.  The restaurant also lacks atmosphere but it's a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant so I didn't really care.

Watching Mrs. Doubtfire in our San Fran hotel (yes, that is right, we sure did) rather than venture out to actually see the sights (long day of walking, don't judge), we were craving some Chinese take-out.

    PROS:
    1. Free delivery! They apparently deliver to lots of San Fran districts.

    2. Good food. I got mongolian beef and the twin got walnut prawns; sauce came on the side, so not soggy.

    3. Huge portions! Seriously, two people could share one entree. The twin said at every other place she's ordered the prawns, it only comes with 12. Here they give you 18 of them.

    4. Cheap! Just $23 for two entrees and an order of brown rice. The brown rice was just a buck (in Seattle, it's like $3+).

    5. Fast! They said 30 min. wait time. They were at our hotel in 15.

Tonight I found a cooked thumb-tack in my chow mein. You can see it in photo number 19.

I would have given a 5 star except the delivery person was very rude and  wanted to keep my 20 dollar bill for a $16.35 delivery without offering any change.  He just wanted to run off with my money. When I asked for some of it back, he offered one dollar. I didn't like his attitude and told him to give me back two dollars.  I said no, two dollars. He hesitated and then gave my money up. He got a $1.65 tip.

When he called my cell phone he said very rudely, "your food is here, come down and get it".  He seems like former prison material. It gave me a bad impression and I immediately told myself I would never call this place again no matter how good their food is. Attitude is everything.

The food did come awfully fast.  Too bad the delivery person had to be such a little prick.

I'm surprised this place doesn't have better reviews!  It's absolutely the fastest delivery (of anything) in SF.  I've often received my beef with broccoli and spring roles in under 15 minutes and the food is consistently fresh and tasty.

Also, unlike most Chinese take-out I've tried in SF, there's nothing bad here.  You know the problem, some places can't figure out noodles, some have no idea how to cook beef, and others MSG the hell out of everything.  Tai Chi just rocks day in and day out and it definitely sates your craving.

The real secret though is to drop by for lunch.  They have a special that's about $6 (with tax) for your favorite dish with soup, tea, and rice.

Ordered broccoli beef and chow mein for delivery. Broccoli was slightly undercooked, chow mein was pretty overcooked, veggies were plain and boiled. $20. Delivery was within the promised window.
