Review from Emmeline S.
Berkeley, CA
"Next day, I carefully avoided the elaborate and cheerful eateries ... and went to what looked like a generic Mexican restaurant. I ordered from the blissfully ordinary menu the "number one" combination, enchiladas, chile rellenos and one cheese burrito. When the food came, I thought some mistake had been made. The food was entirely white! The enchiladas were pancakes wrapped around something reminiscent of chicken salad. The rellenos lay invisible under a white blanket of melted cheese with flakes of pimiento in it. Instead of tortillas, there was a basket of cheese bread... I sat there drenched in cold sweat. The town had been entirely taken over by art food, like the Village of the Damned. A square meal was nowhere to be had."
--from "Art Food Invasion" by Andrei Codrescu
Mr. Codrescu would likely hate this place. I, on the other hand, love both Mr. Codrescu and Tacubaya equally. The two share many similarities- They're both rather pretentious, very bourgeois, and yet, so deliciously addictive. Sometimes they get on my nerves for being so damn exclusive, but in the end, I always go back because they're one-of-a-kind.
At Tacubaya, the White Food is especially wonderful; whenever I stop by, I make sure to get the Papas con Crema (crispy, mealy potato & cheese fritters blanketed under a smooth poblano cream sauce.)
I follow it with a clean-tasting Taco de Lengua (Niman Ranch beef tongue with tomatillo salsa) and a fresh, vegetal Tamal de Verduras (kabocha squash, white beans, cheese & roasted poblanos steamed in banana leaves with salsa roja, crema & cilantro.) I like the firm bite of seasonal squash against the oozy cheese and sandy creaminess of the masa.
If my husband orders the Sope de Chorizo y Papas (crispy masa cake topped with black beans, Mexican sausage and potatoes, garnished with crema, queso cotija and pickled vegetables) I'll nibble at his 'til he gets mad and orders me another one.
We share the milky-sweet cinammon horchata and walk home happy, if poorer.
Bottom Line: Yeah... I love gringo art food. -

East Bay, CA
I've been to this place twice - once about a year ago, and again today. Last year, I went with my mother. I don't remember what I ordered, it was unmemorable... I remember that my dear mumsy got chicken tacos, because she ended up sending them back. She was sure they were fish. The staff insisted they were chicken - I ended up trying some and I wasn't sure, it was either chicken boiled for waaay too long or some nasty fish. Either way it wasn't good.
I went again today, this time with my dear father. What I really wanted was a vegetarian taco, preferably from a taco truck, but that wasn't convenient near 4th St on a Sunday. I tried to order one and the girl was like, we don't do those. So I said well how about I order a meat taco, and instead of the meat you just put some avocado or something in? (Come on, work with me.) Anyway she then suggested I order a side of tortillas and avocado. WTF? She was pretty dismissive. Uh, no thanks to just tortillas and avocado... so I ended up getting a mushroom tostada. It wasn't great. (Also I ended up paying nearly $20 for a single taco, a tostada and two drinks.) If I was wandering around 4th St and getting thirsty I would totally get another horchata, otherwise, I won't be back. -

Seriously? $7 for 12 chips and two table spoons of guac? Wait, now that i look at it again, I guess I understand the guac portion given the measly number of chips. Food was good, but WAAAAY too spendy. We had a group of five, and asked the cashier if the $7 chips/guac order was enough for all of us. She alluded that it would be (which seemed logical given the price point), and so we stuck with one.
I give 'em three stars because the food is very very good, but seriously...skip the guac. -

Tacubaya. Yum!
This restaraunt has great food and a good Taco Tuesday but what I really love is their breakfast menu. Please have a Cafe de Olla and sit back and enjoy. I could probably drink two of these. I haven't, but I could. And the papas con crema and plantains kick ass.
I love eating a breakfast/lunch here and sitting outside in the sunshine. Great restaurant. -
Review from Blondie R.
Alamo, CA
The food was good. The servings were a little small, and if you want rice and beans with your meal, you have to pay extra! Que pasa? The food is already a little pricey. I'm sorry, but I've never paid extra for rice and beans! The food ordering service was not warm and fuzzy. They were inflexible about the menu, and I was told that I had to drink my wine in the restaurant and not on the patio(no outdoor liquor license). I felt like I was in boarding school!

Berkeley, CA
I love this place! Definitely my favorite food around Fourth Street and at the top of my list for Mexican food in Berkeley. Actually, I'll expand that to the Bay Area. Food has always been consistent every visit. The outdoor seating nestled off Fourth Street is relaxing, inviting and a perfect place to rest and chat.
During brunch time, the chorizo and eggs hit the spot and I find it doesn't hurt to order an extra side of pureed black beans. On the weekends, menudo is pure, spicy comfort; however, if you're in the mood for soup, the Sopa de Tortilla is a personal recommendation.
My usual order when I miss the breakfast cut- off time is a collection of tacos. I recommend two or three per person. The grilled Niman Ranch beef would be my favorite, but I love the pork and find the chicken in a crisp shell to also satisfy.
There are a few fresh drink choices in glass containers at the ordering counter and by the very nature of needing to be ladled into a glass, it definitely adds a psychologial layer of freshness. I've always seen horchata and a couple fruit juices.
The fact that they serve single drip blue bottle coffee only makes me love this place more. Where else would I get my coffee kick on Fourth Street? Peet's? -

Coming out of perpetual Yelp lurkdom to post my first review here.
I stopped by here this past weekend on a friend's recommendation, and found it a friendly, casual place serving reasonably flavorful tacos with fresh, sustainable, locally sourced ingredients such as Niman Ranch beef, and homemade drinks like horchata and limonata.
I tried three tacos: the Taco al Pastor (pork), Taco de Lengua (beef tongue), and Taco de Pescado (battered, fried snapper). The pork taco was nicely marinated, but slightly lacking in actual pork flavor. The beef tongue taco was just that - beef tongue with a hint of salsa - and had the right level of tongue flavor without being overwhelming. The fish taco was perfect - lighly battered and fried without hiding the flavor from the healthy chunk of fish within.
Ambience-wise, it's an airy, casual establishment - high ceilings, exposed wooden beams - that shares space with a wine store. It's at the rear of a long line of shops and restaurants behind Peet's Coffee on the main 4th Street strip. You go up to the cash register, where they were helpful with any questions I had about what was in the food, and then you get a number and sit down at a table where they'll bring the food out to you when it's done. Service was fairly fast and efficient. There's an open grill, and there's a nice mix of tables and benches that can accommodate singles, couples, or larger groups. The crowd you'll find here is a predictable Berkeley mix of professionals, academics, and young families.
Overall, a satisfying light meal. At $12, it was somewhat pricey for 3 tacos and a can of diet Coke, but that's what you get when you're in Berkeley where they insist on sustainable ingredients. -

Millbrae, CA
Sundays are always packed with people but the vibe is laid back. Young couples with younger kids, singles and those just loitering around the area.
Order and get a number and a server will bring your order to you.
Tortilla soup filled with fresh chunks of chicken, tortilla strips, avocado pieces fit a sunny yet chilly windy day. Complemented with chips and salsa, we had a nice snack for just over $10. -
Review from Jamie S.
Went here with Boyfriend on a date of omission. I agreed to take him out to get lunch since he was ravenous, but I neglected to tell him that this would include a stop at Crate and Barrell, Sur la Table, Cupkates, and an impromptu stop at a pet adoption fair taking place on the sidewalk. I know, I'm devious.
Anyhow, I wasn't too hungry but I got a blood orange drink they were serving and ate some of the guac he ordered with his quesadillas. Stuff was delicious. Perfect for the beautiful weather and outdoor seating. His quesadillas were pretty good too, but felt more like soft tacos than actual quesadillas.
I for sure want to come back here, maybe once the weather picks up again. Just another lovely addition to my favorite Fourth Street brunch spots. -

NOM!
I'm addicted to the sope de chorizo y papas! The plate looks small, but don't let it fool you! You will be sooo full after you eat this.
There can be a long line during lunchtime, so go after the rush (around 1pm), and also going for dinner can be nice too because they have a nice seating area outside. -

I absolutely LOVE the fish and chicken tacos here! It's a little pricey, but it's not street food. The mexican hot coco is yummy as well =-)

In the Bay Area, we are exposed to many types of Mexican Cuisine and over the years we have developed different types from authentic and rustic to the new, exciting and gourmet. Although some Yelpers claim that this place is fancy and gourmet, I thought that the place hit home.
As much as I rave and review, I am rarely impressed like this. This place reminded me of the food my family made growing up and not the Taquerias that surrounded the Mission where I grew up.
As you stand in line to order, there are shelves with various ingredients for sale. When I saw the Mexican Oregano ($1) and the Guajillo Chiles ($3), I snagged some for my kitchen. http://www.yelp.com/bi... It brought me back and inspired me to buy some for use in my own cooking at home. (I'm going to make Guajillo Sauce and then soup. :) .
I rarely ever order Tortilla Soup, my grandmother made the best and it's really hard to substitute that. I tend to avoid it, as to not disappoint myself but it was the chiles that convinced me that it could be amazing. I was right! The chile base is authentic and made me savor each spoonful. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
To drink we ordered the Blood Orange Aqua Fresca and a Modelo Especial. The juice was very refreshing without being overly sweet. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The Chips and Guacamole were perfect, no salt or anything needed and housemade chips served fresh. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The carne asada taco was great, homemade corn tortillas, succulent meat and a tiny but of spice. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Since I will be making tamales again soon, I decided to try something different and order the Tamale de Calabaza (Butternut Squash). It was sweet yet savory and very delicious. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
This isn't your average Taqueria and that's a great thing. If you want a cheap taco, you can find one anywhere but honestly I'd pay the extra dollar for the quality. I loved the different flavors of the items we ordered and would love to come back and try other dishes and maybe pick up additional spices. Thank you Tacubaya.Listed in: Adventures in the East Bay!

Oakland, CA
Have been wanting to try this place for ages. We finally made it but were a little disappointed. Chicken taco and fish taco were bland. Sope de chorizo y papas was the best thing we had and it was pretty tasty. The ceviche was pretty good, but have had better. We went in hungry (2 of us)for dinner, spent $40 with dessert and were not quite full when we left.
Might try it again sometime if we are in the area, but won't go out of our way. -
Review from Jeanne C.
Tacubaya was pretty good in my book, but missing the hole in the wall feel. It is definitely nestled in upscale downtown Berkeley so you are paying for fancy Mexican. Not sure I always believe in that -- especially with super long lines, but our friends from Oakland took us there. The one great thing is that the food came out within 5 minutes of sitting at our table. The guac was pretty tasty. I did really like the fried fish taco. I should have ordered 3 of those, but instead we got the butternut squash tamale (OK), and the chicken quesadillas, which I thought was chicken tacos the whole time. Silly me.
It was a good meal but nothing that would keep me coming back since I live so far! If I came back, I would ONLY get fish tacos. You won't be disappointed in those! So flavorful! -

i dont understand how people come here, but I guess 4th street shops arent really there for the average college student. the food is really expensive (at least for only average mexican food) and the portions are ridiculously small.

Best mix of street style tacos and top notch fresh ingredients. Their lengua (beef tongue) tacos are the best I've ever had (but knowing that their meat comes from trusted natural sources certainly adds to my enjoyment). It can be busy and crowded at times, but if you skip the lunch and dinner rush the line is rarely that long.

I used to really like Tacubaya, but then they really used to be more flexible about their ordering policy - things like leaving cheese off the tops of beans, and so on - I'm not talking about something complicated like tamales which already have the cheese in the formed masa here! It was awesome that both my omnivorous sweetheart and I could eat here. I loved their tofu divorciados for brunch and the staff was always pleasant. Sadly now they flat-out refuse to leave cheese off of things, which is weird and irritating.
Draconian ordering policies + only one vegan non-salad option for dinner = 1 star. Boooo. -

I wish that I would have read the reviews before I went here. I thought it was the sister restaurant of Mijitas at the Ferry Plaza. It is not. I wanted a quick lunch and I was craving a bean tostada. I got the quick lunch but not the bean tostada. You know the one...loaded with beans, cheese, lettuce, guacamole and sour cream? The counter person told me that they could not make it although they clearly had everything on the line to make one. So I had the roasted plantain tostada which was my only option. I am not saying that it wasn't good...it was delicious. It had a spicy black bean paste under the plantains . The plantains were sweet like butternut squash. Very Peruvian!
It was very small . I was still hungry afterward. It cost about 8 dollars. I may go back to try some of the recommendations here if I go shopping on 4th again.Listed in: "Sit back, Relax, Enjoy...you…

4.5 Stars
Being used to Mexican food on the East Coast (specifically New York), I couldn't wait to get some Mexican tacos in the Bay area. While Tacubaya may not be the best taqueria in the area, it sure was awesome compared to what I'm used to.
The guacamole was zesty and spicy, with enough lime juice to go perfectly with the house made thick chips. I ordered three tacos, fish taco, lengua (tongue) and pastor. The corn tortillias were absolutely killer. The fried fish taco was to die for, though I think that pastor taco was my favorite. The pork was marinated to perfection and tender as tender can be. The lengua was also tender and had no chewy factor at all (I've experienced that awful chewy texture before).
The food here is probably more expensive that a taqueria in the mission district in SanFran, but it was a nice area of berkely and was still pretty reasonable. I will miss this awesome mexican food when i'm back on the east coast. -
Review from David O.
The enchiladas are amazing! I have no qualms with this place. The quality consistently surpasses their great prices.
I love their large selection of hot sauces. Their orchata is authentic and so is their delicious flan. Get the fried plantains when they're in season -- so good.
Oh, and make sure the cap is on tight when you shake your bottle of hot sauce so you don't douse your table mates in it... I'll never live that down. -

Dropped in on Tacubaya on 4th/Hearst yesterday afternoon. Wasn't that hungry, but it was around about time for a late lunch. Had chips/guac, and the fish tacos, plus a sangria.
Food came VERY fast, great service! Tacos were very tasty and the guac was very good too. Wasn't so keen on the salsa verde, was a little too sweet for my tastes.
Great value/pretty good eats and very easy to deal with. I'd definitely go back. -

Sope de chorizo y papas! Fish tacos! A beer!
It's a strange setup at first but you'll get over it when you try the above. The tacos go in this order for me:
1) fish
2) al pastor
3) chicken
4) carne asada
All of them good in those fresh tortillas, but the fish and al pastor the best! If I had to stick with one item it's the chorizo sope hands down--great for bfast, lunch, dinner.
Also, great service! -
Review from Akvile H.
Mehhhh. Came here randomly while in search of food but wasn't that impressed unfortunately. The menu seemed lacking a little but there were some good options. We got some tacos and quesadillas but it could have had more flavor and kick for the price. It was delightfully mediocre at best. Service was ok but the woman at the register taking orders could have been a bit more friendly and smiled. Maybe we just came in on a bad day?

Review from Nique F.
I've lunched at Tacubaya a few times now, and although it's pricey bourgeois Mexican food there's something alluring about it. The location definitely helps: right in the heart of the 4th St shopping district, with plenty of sunny outdoor tables and good people watching. You're in the heart of the upscale Berkeley action, the service moves fast, and the food is creative and not-too-filling (which is a good thing when you need to go dress shopping afterwards).
It's basically gourmet taqueria food, fancy twists on standard items like tacos, tamales, burritos. I usually go for the slow-roasted pork tacos ("Al Pastor", $3.15). My friend ordered their tostada of the day which had plantains, yams, with black bean puree and avocado crema. I was so jealous! I tried one of their sides called "Camote", pureed sweet potatoes...definitely more like dessert than lunch, but super delish.
As long as you prepared to pay a little more for the fancy ingredients and prime outdoor seating, Tacubaya makes for a pleasant pit-stop.Listed in: Go Solo!, Sunshiney Day, Ethnic Eats - Berkeley

Ok, so I'm giving Tacubaya an extra star. I came here when my preggie friend and I were shopping and we needed a little snack before dinner. She needs to eat every 4 hours because she's got a little bun in the oven. I like to eat every 4 hours, just because I like to. But I digress.
We ordered the chips and guacamole as well as some special quesadilla that had kabocha squash, and some special sauce atop it, as well as some pomegranate seeds. I wish I could be more descriptive, but I honestly can't remember every ingredient. I do remember that it was delicious. I was impressed.
Plus the food came out quicker than I'm normally used to from Tacubaya. We'll see in the future if they continue to get more stars from me.1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Diego, CA
Yuk. Left a very bad literal and figurative taste in several mouths.
After forging through a long line and encountering an entirely rude cashier who snippily informed me that there were no substitutions, I ordered the chicken fajita with a salsa verde, for something like $7.95. What I got were two oily tasteless corn tortillas, neither soft nor crisp, filled with bland and pretty awful-tasting shredded chicken and some jack cheese, in a puddle of nondescript salsa verde. Nothing else on the plate, and entirely unapetizing-looking. And tasting. I could not finish it and ended up going next door to the salad bar in the deli for a delicious salad (o why did I not start and end there?)
Two friends got the sope with pork and potatoes and liked it pretty well. Another friend got refried beans and rice, which we all agreed was awful. We all shared guac and chips - average, and a meager portion for the price. Why is this place so popular? I am mystified and won't be back. -

Berkeley, CA
This is a pretty cool mexican restaurant, with a very authentic feel to it, which means you won't find any burritos here. I had the Pork sandwhich, and my friend had the tamale. I also had the chips and guacamole and mocha coffee. All of the food was delicious, and nicely priced. They did serve my coffee in a bowl, which was weird, and I wish it had a handle, but I guess this is authentic to how coffee is suppose to be sipped? Not too sure, but it's new and refreshing. Service was fast, and it was pretty busy on a Friday afternoon for lunch.

This is one of the few Mexican restaurants that offer chilaquiles and cafe de olla in the morning--yum! The tortillas are handmade on-site, they use sustainable products when they can, and they have an assortment of hot sauces for those who like it spicy. I love the tortilla soup and all of their tacos are classic and delicious. I guess the minus one star would be because they don;t change up their specials that much and I had one bad sopa de fideos experience--it was thick like mashed potatoes. This was an off-night, the rest (and there have been many) have been very good!

I got the enchiladas and a lemon agua fresca. You 're kidding me...$13.50 for just two enchiladas on a plate and a drink? No way I'm doing that again. The food wasn't bad, but not worth the price. I can go to my local taco truck for lunch three times for that amount of money and the food is just as tasty.

Love this place. We eat here all the time. Both breakfast and lunch/dinner is really good and the food generally comes very quickly.
The down-sides are that it's almost always insanely busy, parking in the 4th St. area is challenging, to say the least, and the front counter service can by a little icy here. But the food and drinks are good, so we keep coming back! -

This place has some great tacos. The fish tacos and chicken tacos specifically are seasoned and cooked to perfection.
The tortillas are absolutely delicious.
The interior is very clean and the decor is modern. There is plenty of room to eat but lunch gets a bit busy. -
Review from Lea G.
Yes it's pricey and yes I know that if I took some of my family members here they would laugh at the ridiculous prices and they would recommend places in SoCal where I could get 5x more food for the cost....this I know yet I keep coming back here for breakfast because I love their pozole, eggs, coffee, and hot chocolate. It's so damn yummy!

Berkeley, CA
Tacubaya was a really interesting concept when it first opened - a taqueria-style casual Mexican restaurant with an authentic Mexican menu. The menu has evolved over time, getting more authentic and traditional at the expense of some of its Californian flare.
More adventurous eaters will enjoy some of the authentic-but-unusual dishes like braised tongue tacos, but there's something for everyone on the menu, including several vegetarian options and a pretty strong breakfast.
My only gripe is that the place is a little too expensive for what it is and the eggs I got were degrees too runny for my taste, but these are pretty small problems, really, and Tacubaya is still the best casual dining option on Fourth Street. -

If Frida Kalo had a restaurant THIS would be it! Beyond authentic! I tried the: Chilaquiles- sautéed tortillas in a guajillo chile sauce topped with scrambled eggs, onions, cheese, crema & cilantro
with the pinole sweetend coffee...I had to stop talking to my friend and ask for a private moment with my food it was so good... seriously . Can yo say foody heaven. The employees are so nice and the decore is just impeccably tasteful yet daring! -

The Verdict: "Pretty good food, but not the best chips and salsa."
Ingredients are fresh tasting here, but it is not the best flavor and is certainly not authentic. It is for the westernized American health-food tongue, but I kinda like that myself too. The chips and salsa are ok, but there is just something missing. I can't quite put my finger on it.
Would I Recommend It? Meh. -

Ah - Tacubaya - how I would love to love you - but you are just not very vegan friendly, are you? I know it's not your fault that I can't consume legumes, but then - why is it that vegetarians are relegated to beans and cheese as their Mexican vegan options? I am sad to say that I have given up on you, Tacubaya - my heart belongs to Gracias Madre where I am - at least for now - treated to rich mole sauces, perfectly cooked vegetables, gorditas, empanadas and other delights that you just can't see fit to provide as vegan options.

I really liked their ceviche de pescado. Fresh and not fishy at all.
I find their portion to be kind of small. I usually end up eating about 1.5 entree but this could be because most of their dishes are pretty light with lots of fresh vegetables. -

I've been to plenty of restaurants that won't substitute ingredients, and I get that, but never to one that REFUSES to simply leave off an item...until today at Tacubaya. It was explained to me that if the ingredient were left off, the dish would be too plain & simple (which didn't make sense b/c there are plenty of plain & simple dishes on the menu). Being a vegetarian means having to get creative with menus offering very limited veg selections, like Tacubaya's. Won't be supporting a business that extends such a lousy customer service policy and narrow food selection.

I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed Tacubaya before, because I've been here several times.
I love the food here, but I'm not in love with the prices. I usually get al pastor tacos and I'm always curious about what the specials are for the day, as they're usually pretty good too - but again, overpriced.
The pastor always had nice tiny bites of pineapple in them that burst with flavor, and the meat itself is tender and nicely prepared. The other taco varieties range from pretty good (carne asada) to weak (pollo), but, not to harp too strongly on this point, we also overpriced.
I will say that the tamal I had here was really well flavored and delicious, though, and well worth the trip for that alone! But don't miss the pastor, either.
