Oh my lord I love tacos moreno. I lived in b dorm at Merrill my freshman year and it was so difficult to resist going there every. Single. Day.
Their nachos are fantastic. So amazing. Although I usually can't eat it all, I do try to. And it's worth the stomachs ache lol
One thing I do have a problem with is the quesedillas. If you get it on a corn tortilla it's basically a taco not a quesedilla at all. That always dissapoint me but I still enjoy it!
I really like Tacos Morenos because it has reallyy good prices! hella cheap! I've been to almost every single mexican place in santa cruz, and the food here is about one dollar cheaper than most places like taqueria vallarta.
I loveee the sauce they have! It goess soo well with the supreme carne asada buriito! makes it sooo bomb! That is my favorite part of tacos morenos. but I think if it wasn't for the bottled sauce, the burrito would just be average. The meat is kinda dry and tiny. So yeah the food is just average.
They also have breakfast burritos all day which is a plus for students waking up late or just whenever you're craving breakfast tastes. I always just get the supreme carne asada burrito and it's okay. I haven't tried other stuff. But the prices are very affordable so i'll probably come back to try the quesadillas that are only like $3 to $4.
Tacos Moreno is one of the few campus restaurants open on the weekend that I go to. It's a long walk up the hill to get there, but it my stomach demands food.
I've only tried two items on their menu: Supreme Vegetarian Nachos and Vegetarian Quesadilla. The Supreme Nachos are always delicious, with golden brown tortilla chips drenched in bean paste, guacamole, sour cream and topped with jalapenos. It's a large enough portion that I cannot finish by myself, but I enjoy every bite. However, the vegetarian quesadilla was extremely small and sucked. Tacos Moreno's menu is quite limited, and their food and drinks are way overpriced. Then again, this isn't San Francisco. Boo.

Well, when you're all the way up at Merrill and starving, you definitely don't wanna trek all the way down to Joe's or anywhere else. So it's really a good thing that they have this place way up in the hills of UCSC. Now I've enjoyed my times the few times I've been here, but I'll have to admit, I was starving every single time and was in need of a quick fix.
As far as authentic Mexican food quality goes, I was not impressed at all with their food. I've had their premium nachos, and a few of their burritos. I felt their meats were too dry, and no time went into marinating them. When a Mexican restaurant can have good meat as their priority, then everything else seems to be second nature.
Until they decide to put more effort into their meat, they won't be seeing me around unless I'm starving and stranded up the hill...

Hmm for some reason I asked people around here where do I get some good Mexican food and they said try Tacos Moreno which is on campus. I said sure why not. Anyways I ordered the nachos. I had much better though. But I found the chips were a little stale and did not get my money's worth to be honest. I was still a little hungry afterwards. Anyways I am sure their are some good Mexican food around this place, but I got to go ahead and use yelp for help =)
Wow Toto, we're a long way from the mission.
So when I heard there was a taquería, on the UCSC campus I was elated, so I trudged my ass all the way up the hill to Merrill to indulge myself a little. But it was far from an indulgence. I paid 8 dollars for rice, dried out beans and sour cream. Now normally when I order a super veggie burrito I expect a little more. But I was willing to forgive and forget and tried it again a few months later, but still not luck. This time I decided to hit the basics, I mean, how could you mess up a bean and cheese quesedilla. Well apparently you can.
Hello guys?? have you ever heard of putting cheese on a beans and cheese quesedilla. Okay, to be fair there was some cheese, but it wasn't enough to hold the beans together so whenever you picked up the qusedilla all the beans when spilling out. So now I just had a tortilla with a few beans and a little cheese. But hey, at least the salsa was good.
I've now written Tacos Moreno off my list of acceptable food joints. If you are jonesing for some mexican food and are stuck on campus, I'd suggest heading over to the hungry slug.

So one of my greatest regrets about my experience at ucsc was choosing merrill college because i heard they had a great taqueria, mind you this was 3 years ago. Well in reality that "great taqueria" was taqueria santa cruz (which is awesome btw) but their lease at merrill had ran out and they were replaced almost a year later by tacos moreno. I walked up that damn hill multiple times a day for a year only to be greeted by a crappy taqueria upon reaching the summit.
i felt cheated
i still do
i could have lived much closer to all my friends but nooooo i figured good mexican food right outside of my door would have been worth it. and it would have been if it were actually good mexican food.
save yourself the money and go to the dining call or stevenson's coffee house, ones free and the other is better.
i guess their breakfast burritos are ok but i still wouldn't eat there.
This place is overpriced considering how crappy it is!! As soon as I took my first bite I started to wonder if I could get a refund.. Go there if you're in the mood for gross, greasy crap that isn't even fit to be fed to pigs!
Taco Moreno's across from the Main Beach has closed to move to a downtown and has yet to open at their new location. So I decided to save a trip across town to Water Street by trying UCSC location. Yuck!! The menu has no Spanish on it, they serve rice on everything (rice is for chinese food), and they do not have hot sauce to go. Basically, this place is for gringo UCSC students with no taste buds. Take the time to go to Water St or to their new Laural St location when it opens. Sorry UCSC folks local Santa Cruz people just don't like you, they like your money, and this just goes to prove it. They're taking your cash, serving you slop, and saving quality for locals. Its a sad fact.
Yet another Tacos Moreno in Santa Cruz, and I believe the best of the bunch. The group's claim to fame is using shredded cabbage instead of lettuce, and it definitely is superior; sweet and crunchy. The food here is consistently good, and they tolerate my special requests (black beans, no cilantro) with the same ambivalence that they give everyone else. Also, breakfast burritos all day for you lazy students who wake up at 2pm.
For the people living or working on campus, this place is a must. I go at least once a week during the school year, and they'll be open for the summer now too!
On a couple occasions when I've been in a group they've swapped burritos on us, leading to some pork consumption on my part (and I'm vegetarian), so be careful on that first bite, or get one of those fancy tortillas, like tomato or spinach, to set yours apart.

Work would be a whole lot less exciting if this place weren't around. My office usually tries to go every Friday (although there is one hungry kid who goes almost every day) as a treat at the end of the week.
I usually get a breakfast burrito (served all day) with potatoes and a corn quesadilla. The breakfast burrito is really really good. Lots of beans, eggs and cheese with your choice of filling. You can get them plain, with potatoes or with sausage. Add some salsa and you're all set. The quesadilla is not quite what you would expect. It is more of a taco with a semi crispy tortilla filled with beans, cheese, cabbage, crack, and salsa and is only 1.90. The burrito (with potatoes) comes out to 3.80. Best of all, it gets me out of my messy office and lets me walk around campus a bit. The walk is especially important on the way back because I need to work up a little breathing room after lunch.
The service is friendly, it looks like a family run joint. The food is delivered promptly and the place is always clean. They have a lot of outside eating room for the sunny days and glass bottled sodas. Now I don't drink soda. Now, soda is like a diabetic nightmare filled with christian crank. But, I love the novelty of drinking it from a glass bottle and have been known to order one from this place. I dunno, the kid in me is still under the influence of early 90's advertising when all the hip teens would drink their coke from a condensed glimmering glass bottle, "aaaahhhhh." Damn you crafty advertising campaigns! Quick, who can say the big mac song the fastest??
Your options on campus are pretty limited, but if you are hungry anywhere west of the engineering building then you'd be well served by going here. Nestled in the remote wilderness of Merill College, you can enjoy the same burrito that garners lines out the door at their Water St. location with a fraction of the wait.
The portions are not as outrageous here as some other taquerias in town, but what they lack in quantity they make up for with some of the best salsa ever to grace a squeeze bottle. The cabbage also sets this burrito apart from nearly every other place in town.
5 stars.
As a recent Texas transplant, I have been jonesing for decent breakfast tacos for months. At the campus Tacos Moreno (not the other one) they have amazing breakfast burritos with beans, cheese, and eggs. I get mine with potatoes on a wheat tortilla (other options include spinach and tomato in addition to regular flour) and slather it with their hot sauce. It's kind of the perfect meal. If I was still eating meat, I would definitely try out the chorizo option. Also, they charge about 10-20 cents less for everything on the menu at this one than the one on Water. I eat here once a week and am never disappointed.
I love Tacos Moreno...I eat here too much. They are so nice, and the food is prepared so quickly. I love the veggie burrito, and I love that they now have rice and beans (a lot of food, super cheap). They are also really accommodating to personalizing your order.
