when you're awake, they're awake, but unfortunately, it's cash only (like that's a surprise).  perhaps they make up for it with their parking lot.  that's right, a parking lot that's free and always has space - in the heart of downtown.

this is my official go to spot for tacos in l.a.  the bar is set right here.  if you like a taco joint more than this place, it's cuz you live far away.  enough said.

so why 4 stars instead of 5?  cuz when you're here, you feel relieved to see the cops.  if you need an idea, my ex-girlfriend got car-jacked at gun-point in the same area.  so if you see some thugs with dreads, just keep driving.  running the red will get you a ticket and increase your insurance, but at least you'll be alive to pay for them.  notice at the top of this page, the "good for kids" spot is checked-off as NO.  so beware, that hostile old thug can't even beat up a 4 year old girl, but he sure can shoot a gun (if he can afford the damn bullets).  also, you'll probably be swarmed by all the bums for some change and a cigarette.

even with all the shit you might have to put up with to get a taco, it still gets 4 stars.  so play a little roulette with yourself and see what all the hype is about.

I love this place. For $4.75 you can get a huge delicious burrito 24hours a day, I like the carne asada.  Usually, I even have leftovers in case I want to make a carne asada burrito scramble in the morning, yum. I love their hot sauce as well, save it and put it on anything that needs a little heat.  Plus they have help yourself pickled jalepenos, carrots, and onions.  My least favorite item there is the quesadilla. It tastes great but they load it down with so much cheese that I always feel a little queasy afterwards.

I live right across the street from this place so the late-night guys have gotten to know me and are always super nice. the horchata is also amazing, which they sometimes give me in little cups (I'm pretty sure they only do this when I'm really drunk) - thanks guys.

What a fu*kn trip.
I can't quite explain all the emotions I felt tonight.  From awkwardly uncomfortable to relief.   Ya know... the kinda feelin you get that make the hairs on your arms stand up??  Forced to hang out with people that are just creepy and socially retarded.  Yup...  *burrrrrr... icky*
Anyway....  enough about my crazy weird awesome night.

Ended up helping my friends bake a Jon Gosselin c*ck cake for a birthday party tomorrow.  HAWT.... Well... more like, they baked and I watched as I explained to them my unusual evening with people that shouldn't leave their homes. Yes... tonight was my very own circus show full of strange acts.  Won't bother you with the details.

Cake... DONE....Bottles finished..

Me: "Yo... Eddie... I'm freakn hungry.  I want tacos."
Eddie: "Follow me..."
TACOS MEXICO
Me:  "Whoa... I've never seen this place.  What a dump"
Eddie: "Trust me.."
Me: Alright then... You lead."

( For me, 2 beef tacos, 2 pork...)
ME: "OMG OMG OMG......  Can I have 50 more, please?"

The meat was so tender and spices oh so tantalizing.  The corn tortillas have the perfect density.  Not too thick, not too thin.  Just enough to hold all the wonderful goodness in your hand.

I'm so happy...

*Never argue the decision on where to eat with a heavily tattooed man that likes to bake cakes*
"You the man, Eddie... you the man,............  Now, for my birthday, I think I'd like a Joe Jackson c*ck cake please."

**UPDATE...** Sunday: Day After
Jon Gosselin's penis was dropped on the floor before the birthday girl even got to 'blow' out the candle."

*Sloppy drunks, man.... Sloppy. LMAO.*

Delicious? Yes definitely. I got a torta from here and almost inhaled it. The meat had flavor but still tasted like meat. (Now I want to try their beef tongue.) They also have a tasty horchata and another drink I did not try.
As they are just a stand you pretty much stand at the counter or take your food to go but I'm fine with that. The only issue I have with going back to the place is that being in the middle of downtown you can't find (free) parking but good news is it is near a bus stop.

It's all about the ASADA!  24 Hour place, which is a real Downtown Core rarity.  The asada is amazing.  We've only done it in burrito form -- but I can't imagine it loses anything in translation to taco form.  If you're nearby, don't think...just go.  We live 2 blocks away, so have no recollection about parking.  But even if you have to pay to park right next door, do it.

Just a slight jaunt from my apartment or from any of the local bars is Tacos Mexico.  Open way late and perfect to fill up your stomach after a long night of liquid liver destruction by John Jameson.  No frills.  You'll probably stand next to a couple creeps while waiting for your delicious burrito to come up in the window.  And yes, I only say burrito, because that's the only thing I order.  Hey, once you find something that dazzles your palette, it's hard to order anything else.  Carne asada = bad-for-you goodness.

Oh, and try the horchata....mmmm....

Wow.  The best carnitas tacos I have ever eaten.  Maybe the best pork I have ever eaten.

The pork is juicty and porky.  The tortilla is fresh and has a great corn taste that blends with the pork.

Worth a trip (even though it is a stand at the corner of a parking lot).

My favorite taco spot.  Most everything that needs to be said has been covered in the reviews below: delicious little tacos done right, cash only, open all night, great price, free parking at night, nightmare to park during the day, area a bit 'bummy' at night (word up to the bums and bag ladies).

I discovered the wonders of the Torta here.  I'm a sandwich nut and for some reason always thought a Mexican sandwich was a weird idea.  Tacos Mexico's Asada Torta changed all that forever.  Another hidden LA gem for sure.  Find it!

All these reviews got me really excited for this place.  I need a 24 hour joint in DTLA since I'm a night owl and DT is ... umm ... well it's not.

It's about a mile walk from my apartment, which is nice for the pup, and sure it's in a bit of a shady neighborhood, but I brought a big burly man to protect me.

And by the time we brought the food back home, I have to say I was really looking forward to trying it.  But it just wasn't that exciting.  Just a run of the mill burrito.  I would have preferred a burrito from the Mexican joint across the street but unfortunately they close at 6 PM or something ludicrous like that.

I do appreciate that it's open 24 hours.  That's pretty much it's only redeeming quality.

1.25 gets you a one-way ticket to beef taco heaven. If you're a foodie stuck in downtown LA and need some 'real' food, grab a few bucks a few napkins and enjoy.

Wheelchair access: Hmmm. It's a stand, there's a step. I shouted my order and had a guy in line hand them my dough and hand me my tacos. No problem, we're all friends.

Anyone for some tongue? How about some head?

Now that I got your attention - you should get your mind outta the gutter cause I am talking about tacos here - yummy tacos - even when they are lengua and cabesa tacos. AND, this is a big deal for me to say, considering these tacos come without cheese.

This review is overdue. Hubby and I were at the Orpheum to see Yaz a while back and after the show we hopped on over to this little taco stand. I remember hearing people talking about how they come from miles away to this place just for the tacos...and also hearing someone say, "The cabesa (the cheek meat) tastes just like roast beef".

Not that brave, I'm afraid...but, I did have 2 lengua tacos. Yum! The green salsa was delicious. We were in our car five minutes, headed back to the LBC, when my husband said that he wished he ordered about 10 more tacos.

We haven't been back, but that's only because we don't live in downtown LA. We will be back tho. You can count on it!

I was not impressed. I work nearby and I was hoping to find a regular taqueria within walking distance. My search continues.

The carne asada was bland and was over powered by the salsa, cilantro and onions.   The al pastor was mushy, overly marinated.

The salsas were decent and it helped make these tacos edible, bit I wouldn't call it anything special.

The saving grace was the carnitas taco. The meat was not greasy and had a good flavor. The green salsa and a wedge of lime gave it enough acid to really bring out the flavor. I would honestly come back just for that.

We came here cuz Y2 said it was yummy.

Sorry, wasn't impressed :/ The meat was okay and the shells were different than most shells- thicker and sorta gorditaish.. but the flavor wasn't as good as most places I've been to. I had a tounge taco and carnitas taco. They were cheap but really tiny.

it was a decent 24hr downtown spot though, so now that I know it's there, I'll likely return. It actually has a parking lot.

maybe ill get a torta next time.

This review is for ALL Tacos Mexico locations, not just downtown - I've been to several.

I've had more tacos from different taco joints in L.A. than I can even begin to count but nobody has ever managed to beat Tacos Mexico. Sure, their tacos are small but these little morsels of deliciousness are worth it.

Back when I was in high school (class of 95!) their tacos were only $0.25 cents each! Now they're $1 each, but on Tuesdays they have this glorious deal called "Taco Tuesdays" where each taco is only $0.50 cents. Can't beat that.

-Try the Carne Asada (beef) tacos or the Al Pastor tacos (pork)
-Ladies, be prepared to order 4-5 tacos. Guys usually get 5-6 tacos.
-Inside of each taco they include salsa, diced onion & cilantro but I recommend getting the salsa on the side because it is the work of el diablo - it's HOT.
-Their horchata and jamaica is hella good.
-Be sure to grab a bunch of lemon wedges and pickled onion at the salsa bar. A squeeze of lemon nicely tops off all of their meats.
-They only take cash but there's usually an ATM inside.

If you're looking for REAL mexican tacos in L.A., this is the place!

filthy-ass dumpster-box style joint, no chairs, rub elbows with border jumpers if you can find a place to stand, the horchata by the front never tried because looks like a bucket of cum. And the flies buzzing around look drunk from sucking on the meats. I remember when the taco man used to get the meat with his bare hand, squeeze the juice out with his fist, then put on the corn tortillas. How sick can u go? Yet gotta love this place. If you dont die from food poisoning, they have the best torta in Los Angeles, period. Burrito very average at best skip it cause they dont put shit it in but beans and tons of rice. Tacos are good I wish they would put cheese, lettuce, tomato instead just onions and red hot sauce so hot cant taste anything but your ass on fire. After ripping their ass here, still get 4 stars because of that torta---once a month for me so i dont have mad cow flowing through my arteries that often. And the order takers have the personality of a sombrero straw hat, like I am doing them a favor by patroning their dumpy, bribe-the-health-inspector-with-lifetime-tacos establishment

MAN. I was looking for this place the last 2 times I went on a shopping spree downtown. My friends thought I was making it up.

I kept telling them, "I used to go here back in the day, I had court downtown and my mom used to bring me here afterwards, Its next to a empty parking lot and its a little stand....thats all I know!".

Finally after driving up and down almost every street, I saw IT. Oh My Godness I found IT!!! As I hit my emergency lights (There is NO parking)...oops a cop pulls behind me and honks. CRAP. I'm starving....no time to find parking. I pull in the lot and its $3 bucks flat rate. I reverse. I almost hit the damn cop. I drive around the corner to the other entrance of the same lot. A different guy. How much? $1. SOOOO downtown. Everything is negotiable. It doesn't help that there were a bunch of hot chicks stuff in my car.....

We run across the lot and order:

I'll have 4 Carne Asada tacos and a large Horchata. No onions, No Cilantro, Extra Red Chili Sauce. YUM!

They are tiny little tacos. They are the bomb!!! And yes, I can eat 4 and wish I ordered 10. All my friends were happy and full. We ate standing up at the little side bar. The owner flirted with us. Of course we flirted back, who doesn't love free tacos and refills. We got more food. FREE. He asked when he can come to the beach with us. I said "Anytime you bring some of these tacos you can come party with us!!!". Yea I'm a hungry skank.......I'll flirt for food....thats my new motto....

I asked for Sour Cream too, and they said they didn't have any :(

I've got some friends with a loft downtown so whenever we venture there to see the sights and water the troops at one of the new downtown bars, we always seem to end up here.  Actually we seek this place out.

Yes this place is just a shack, but they deal out some incredible burritos and tacos.  The crowd around the place should tell you that they are doing something right.  For about $6 you can arm yourself with a huge (HUGE) carnitas burrito and a soda.  Order it the way you like it and enjoy.  I go for carnitas with rice, salsa, cilantro, and onions.  It is amazingly good.

Yeah there may be some interesting folks hanging around asking for spare change, but you can deal with that.  Just go about the task at hand and get some tasty food in ya.  The food is awesome...and maybe even more so with a few drinks in yer belly.

Oh...and be sure to grab a handful of napkins.  You're going to need them.

My coworkers and I have been feeling adventurous this week. We've been trying to check out new places to eat around us. Our latest discovery is Tacos Mexico located on the corner of 9th and Broadway. This little Taco stand was surprisingly good. I ordered a Carne Asada soft taco that was only $1. The meat wasn't scary with tendons or anything. It was actually really good! When we were ordering we asked for extra sour cream and the employee said they didn't have sour cream. Weird right?  I also got a cheese quesadilla that came with lettuce, tomatoes, beans and cheese, rice and SOUR CREAM. What happened? I thought there was no sour cream? This went for $4.50 and it was plenty of food!

Ignore the bum that pees right next to it. Please buy him a taco!!!

Just had 2 Al Pastor Tacos for $1.25 each, and they were awesome.  This place is really tiny with no seating.  One could easily mistake this place as the guard's booth for the parking lot, lol.  You kinda have to stand shoulder to shoulder with strangers if you don't want to hold your food the whole time.  For such a cheap price though, I guess I can't complain.  I can't believe this place is 24 hours too.  Think i'll ride my bike if I go at night though so I can speed past the homeless and pee smell :)

My friends and I stopped here last night on the way to Beck @ Nokia...It's a taco stand-you order, they give you your food, and you eat it right ther standing up.Their tacos are SOLID!!!! Honestly, I don't think I've ever had a better taco! I had 3 pastor (marinated pork) and one asada. They come on two super yummy corn tortillas with the meat, onions, cilantro, and a red salsa/hot sauce that is the perfect amount of spicy. My friend had beef cheeks (cabeza). It looked really good, and she said the meat was really tender. I'm gonna get that next time... They also give you marinated carrots and jalapenos-you can eat them there, or they will put them in a little baggy that you can take to go. This place is perfect for a quick, cheap bite on the way to a show or late night, maybe lunch too... It wouldn't have been hard to twist my arm to go in for round 2 after the show!!!

4 stars for the carne asada... and for being 24 hours.  the carne asada burrito is really good.  i dont like the tortillas they use for the tacos... they are overthick and get soggy.  so i prefer a straight up burrito...the only place i dont modify my order.  cilantro, onions, asada, rice, beans, red sauce.  i can't vouch for anything else, pastor is OK.  they have no chicken.  and it's probably not vegetarian friendly.

also i always end up there after midnight and parking in the lots is free.

Tacos Mexico satisfies my carne asada taco fix every time.  It's a little intimidating on the outside, but I work nearby and walk by it frequently.  One day I said "what the hell, I want some tacos" and tried it.  It's good and cheap.  Afterwards, I noticed their logo all over town, so it's part of a chain of restaurants (if that makes anyone feel better about trying Tacos Mexico).  It kind of reminds me of a permanent taco truck.

Sweet, a taco place within walking distance of my office!  Well, kind of walking distance, about 10-15 minutes each way.  I just found this one, on Yelp of course, a couple weeks ago.  They are part of the Tacos Mexico chain that has stores around Los Angeles and other parts of California.  This one is more like a shack than a store, on Broadway just off Ninth Street.  It is mostly for take-out, as you walk up and order at a window, but they do have counters where you can stand to eat.  Their tacos are $1.25 each and they have the usual meats (carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, pollo, lengua, buche, cabeza, and maybe a few more I can't remember).  I've been here twice and have tried the carne asada, carnitas and al pastor.  Of the 3, the carne asada was my favorite, but then again it usually is.  The carnitas and al pastor were both good too.  Typical street tacos, made with two small tortillas, meat, onions, cilantro and sauce.  The red sauce they use is a little spicy, but nothing you can't handle (unless you're weak sauce).  The green is very mild, but still good.  Both times I've gotten the tacos to go, and the tortillas get a bit soggy in transit back to the office.  Not the store's fault, that's just the way it is.  Next time, maybe I'll just hang out and eat them there.  As others have said, the neighborhood is a little sketchy, but I wouldn't worry at all coming here during the day.  Oh yeah, the parking during the say is sparse, so I suggest if you drive you bring 2 people so one can order while the other circles the block in the car.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude, if you're jonesing for the best torta in the whole wide world then look no further than this little, and I mean little taco stand in downtown LA. I don't think there is an address because it's so small and it's literally shoved in this little alleyway. I swear you'll miss it if you don't look carefully. The tortas rule! It's like a party in my mouth and all my taste buds are high and running around like Lindsay Lohan. Make sure you get it with mayo, and you have to get the horchata also, they make it in this huge jar on the counter from scratch where they just scoop you a drink probably with a share of flies with it, but who cares it is so freaking good. The cleanliness probably wouldn't get a rating it's so low but I don't think the health department could even find this place to audit it anyways. But don't ask questions just eat the torta. I have searched for many years at probably 100 places high and low for a torta that could equal this torta but I have failed miserably. The people working there don't really speak English that well but they understand beef torta. If you go here make sure it is during the peak daylight hours, you will have your share of really shady characters, scary looking loiterers, and standard LA homeless guy asking for change. I wouldn't recommend it at night  since it gets really sketchy there(although I have been there on numerous occasions because at 2am when intoxicated I am the fearless superhero Tortaman). Parking sucks too. But have I mentioned the tortas are worth it?

Went here for the first time last week after a long night of drinking out in downtown LA. The place looks like a dumpy stand from the outside w plenty of bums and sketchers floating around. I suggest packing a gat and/or sporting a Kevlar vest if you're coming here late night. However, this is a very worthwhile Mexican dining experience. I had three soft tacos (legit Mexican style - tasty carne asada, chopped onion, cilantro, and red salsa on two hot soft corn tortillas) for $1 each. My biggest mistake was not ordering like ten. That was the tastiest, most authentic taco I've had in LA I think. This place is all about the tacos. They even had an "A" in the window from the health dept... although I think they probably jacked it from another eatery or something. What a great late night option! I'd give it five stars if I felt safer while eating, but I guess that's part of the experience, que no? Who do you think you gettin crazy with, esse? Don't you know I'm loco?! Viva Tacos Mexico!!!
