BEST LATE NIGHT TACOS EVER!
How the hell are the workers all skinny? WTF? Even the tortillas get a dippin in hot oil. Chorizo and asada were my favs. Multiple bins dispensing the trinity of Mexican drinks. This place wins.
Nothing special, I actually thought their Asada Burrito was a bit too salty and kind of dry. Used the red sauce but even that was just o-k.
Prices aren't bad, around $4.59 for the Burrito, $1.25 for tacos.
No chips on the side, just the usual radish/lime.
Its not bad but its not great.
This place just didn't stand out from all the other taco joints.
Delicious food and entertainment like a ghetto Medieval Times.
No horses though, just the sound of clicking high heels.
If you come here wearing your favorite colors you can cheer for your favorite Medieval Times hero. Its probably wise if you refrain from booing though.
I swear minutes after sitting down an argument busts out between two homies.
2am....you know what time that is, drunken homies ready to brawl with greasy hands. Oh wait don't forget the chicks wearing club attire taking sips of a Bacardi Rum bottle, not even hiding it, its just sitting right there on the table like whatever. Badass!
There is also the ceremony of the bare midriffs that should not be shown, this part of the show is not for the faint of heart.
This place is a great place for a first date! Dinner and a show for less then 10 bucks....dont forget showtime is 2-2:30am.
Ahh Jeez! This place is fantastic for some late night greasy, cheesy, meaty, spicy grub. It's not too far out of the way from Downtown and if you live east of the city, like me, this place is located conveniently close to the 10 fwy.
The worst thing about this place is that they only accept cash. Actually, I haven't been here in a few months so it's possible they accept card now, but I'd guess they probably still don't. I rarely carry cash so I need to make sure to be packing some if I plan to come here after a night of fun, otherwise make sure you surround yourself with confidants to carry enough cash for the both of you.
Onto the food. I've only ever ordered carne asada mulitas here and for good reason - they're heart-stoppingly delicioso. They are not skimpy but I've put away three once, although I wouldn't recommend it, as two of them should be more than enough for anyone. This fine establishment also provides complimentary pinto beans, which you can find in a gigantic crock pot beside the registers.
Best late night tacos/mulitas in LA!
Yes, open super late and on my way home from a late night in downtown or any area in L.A. for that matter. Mmmmm the champurrado warmed me up on a cool early morning and the mulitas are so yummy, they hit the spot oh so perfectly! Topped it off with a plain ol bean and cheese burrito, and the beans were tasty and they use white cheese. What better way to top off the night, ahhhh I will sleep great tonight!
This place was a real surprise for me. Chain mexican food places are usually just ok and this place is way better then just ok. This place is large and has plenty of seating, and a decent sized parking lot. The service was quick, and the people behind the counter very friendly. I tried a carnitas burrito when I went there, and I honestly don't know why I did. Carnitas is something that is very different at a lot of mexican food places, and a lot of the time its not good. Well This place does carnitas well, and I enjoyed the burrito. Also their hot sauce was good. If your ever in the area this and want mexican food this is the place for you.
GREATEST TACOS I HAVE EVER EATEN!
King Taco? Please! They have nothing on this place.
Hey!
Yeah you! Reading this review. Yeah you, the one angry typing on the keyboard. What you know about burritos? Specifically carnitas burritos? Nothing that's what! Because if you knew a thing or two you would have tried this place by now.
Ohhh what, cuz it's on Central Street your foodieness doesn't allow you to come to this part of town, maybe raw fish in Beverly Hills but not burritos in Central and Washington huh? What you need to come here with 20 others to feel safe?
Well guess what! You won't be safe. Not with burritos like these. You will surely want to eat 5lbs worth of it like I did.
Yeah and this used to be a McDonald's. Now it looks like a hackneyed McDonalds. So what! It's good and not only good its good for you.
Its full of vitamins and minerals, no artificial flavors, purely organic, and no hormones, and it regrows hair...But don't quote me on that.
Try it, you'll like it. Be a man! Or just a sassy chick!
1 star = cheap prices
1 star = overloaded meat on almost everything
1 star = all the side condiments
1 star = nice, empty seating area
1 star = private lot parking
-0.5 star = Location. While I personally wouldn't come here myself at night, I'd say with two other girls on a sunny day for lunch, I didn't feel one bit unsafe. Then again, I work in the hood. -_-
-0.5 star = the onion breath that followed me to my sleep
Out of my group of friends, we ordered a mulita, quesadilla, torta, and many tacos. Most were asada, one chicken, and one carnitas. SO MEATY. SO GOOD.
The coke, however, was a bit "bitter" according to my friend.
All in all, good experience. I hope they had a drive-thru though, for those late nights when I DON'T want to get out of my car. And I'm by myself.
So my friend and I were driving back to west LA late one night after going to a drum & bass show in a really run-down industrial park by downtown LA and drove past this random Mexican place that had tons of people in line. I ordered up a carne asada sopes and an al pastor mulita, and they were absolutely delicious. I forget what my friend ordered, but we were both sitting in Mexican food heaven raving about how good this place was.
For the longest time we would often wonder what the name of that super-bomb Mexican place was we went to that one night, until today when I was emptying out receipts from my wallet and found the receipt for Tacos El Gavilan. Mystery solved. Today might be the happiest day of my life!!!
It's South Central Los Angeles and I'm on the taco hunt. I get a vague description via email with vague coordinates. All hell could break loose at any moment.
I'm looking for the neon lights, the flashing taco signs but the streets look cold and dark and when I see a pitbull chase a car down Florence Ave I give up and get back on the 110. On the radio it's Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and I feel like Napoleon's La Grande Arme retreating out of Russia. The cannons fire and my stomach rumbles.
Back on the surface streets I turn on to Central Ave and see a familiar sign,Tacos El Gavilan.El Gavilan was happening this night. A full parking lot and two lines two order as well as a line at the salsa "bar".
"Three of your best tacos!" I said to the girl at the window.
"What kind you want?"
"Carnitas, al pastor, asada..one of each..I'm a taco reporter, a taco critic"
"Yeah ok whateva,anything to drink?"
"Your finest tamarindo!"
By this time she was rolling her eyes at me and said something to a taquero.I paid and was handed my ticket. Order #92.
When an order is ready it is announced over a speaker system by the taquero that has prepared your order. The first time the order goes over the speaker it's usually in spanish and if noone answers then it goes over in english. Sometimes people are just oblivious and they have kids with them that are distracting or they are just being stupid and they aren't paying attention. If noone has claimed the order it goes over in spanish and english again and then just in english until eventually someone picks up their order or the taquero gives up and moves on to preparing another order. That process can take a few minutes though and it's valuable time for the taquero because the longer he has to wait for the unclaimed order the longer it takes him to getting to the next order.
Basically if you don't pay attention and pick up your order in a timely fashion you are f**king it up for the next guy.
I was prepared though. When noventa y dos went over the speaker I would get up for my order . I wouldn't wait for the english translation. I would get up to show the taquero that I understood and that I wasn't some desperate gabacho out for some taco kicks. I was a serious taco reporter. What kind of swine would report on tacos but not understand how to count to one hundred in spanish ?
Something odd happened though. When my order was ready the taquero just looked at me and motioned the plate to me and didn't announce my order number over the speaker system! hah! what is this? I was caught off guard but then I realized that she probably told him that I was a taco reporter.
The tortillas at El Gavilan are done very well. They glisten. And the meats surprised me. The al pastor has a cinnamon flavor..very different and very good. The asada and carnitas are rustic and lean.Oh and the salsa roja has that firey kick..better have yourself a cold beverage handy.
Walking back to my car I heard it " numero ciento y uno, 101" "numero ciento y uno " number 101! your order ready" "numero ciento y uno, ciento y uno 101! 101! 101! " and the longer it went on I could hear in the taquero's voice the fatigue, desperation, and the utter disgust for the son of a b**ch that wouldn't claim his order because he knew as did I that somewhere in the crowd there was some degenerate with that #101 ticket.
driving back from south la can be a real grind when you have to take surface streets. this converted OG mcdonald's location really hits the spot for a quick and cheap lunch. the taco's are good, but nothing special compared to what we get in highland park. i'll not hold that against them in the spirit of the holidays.
next time i plan to try other parts of the menu.
They have the best tacos de asada EVER, free frijoles de olla, the best agua de jamaica, and if that weren't enough THEY TOOK OVER A MCDONALD'S!!!! :) POWER TO THE PEOPLE! The food is great and it is open late if not 24/7. Their tacos always hit the spot for me and their burritos are huge. That place is also very supportive of the community. It is one of the best places in South LA to eat any time of the day!!!
This is my go to spot in LA for Mexican food. $1.25 carne asada tacos, ridiculous variety at the salsa bar, open late every night, what more could I ask for??.....actually, if they served cerveza then they would get 5 stars fo sho.
This is a converted Micky Dee's. It still has the gold arch and is walk up service only. There's a line at all hours but it goes quickly. The cashier's are lovely and you can listen to banda on the loudspeakers. It's possible to watch them make your food so that part is good. Very good food here. I actually stay away from the signature tacos and get something else. The tacos are dipped in oil before they are grilled. Great tasting but too many fat calories for me. Burritos here are better. The pure carne or all beef burritos with any kind of meat you want are only $0.50 more. That's a bargain. After dark when they are sure that no health inspectors will come by, the salsas come out and you have a salsa bar. Its right on the corner and you can watch your car. Why is that an issue? Because its that kind of neighborhood. Hey, did you want authentic or what? If you are not daring, just go to Taco Bell and get the "hot" sauce packet.
