Yummy Yum Yummy. This place isn't much to look at but it has the best shrimp tacos ever. I have been here twice and I love the food. The boyfriend and I went there last night for dinner. He ordered the fish taco plate & I ordered the shrimp taco plate. The plate comes with 2 tacos, rice, beans and a drink.
5 stars for the food
I couldn't give it 4 stars because it's not very clean . The dining area had ants!! Also, the staff's language was very inappropriate . Please don't think I'm a goody two shoes that never cusses. I cuss like a Mutha F**ka but when I'm at a restaurant I don't want to hear about BJ's while I'm eating. Seriously, save it for Bar Talk.
We ordered the fish and shrimp tacos...between the two, I prefer the shrimp...the texture was better. The fish tacos were great, but they were a bit soft for my liking. If you let the fish tacos sit for a few minutes, it basically becomes mushy. For the price ($1.59 for fish and $1.99 for shrimp) it's worth the taste and size.
We also had the fish ceviche. I have to say it's not one of the best I've had. The fish was...well, a bit fishy. I've had ceviche where the fishy-ness does not come through.
I can't remember, was it the shrimp or the fish taco I like more? It's hard to tell because they are both battered and deep fried, but it doesn't matter because they are both amazing. I always order at least one of each when I come here, but they do have other items on the menu worth sampling.
The fish soup was good, but you need to be somewhat adventurous with this one because I could not identify half the stuff floating around in my bowl. It was all very flavorful, but not entirely sure what "it" was.
They have a great salsa bar, including the seasoned and marinated yellow peppers that I always try, but always bring tears to my eyes. They are hot.
The place is tiny and always full, but they have a few tables outside to accomodate the overflow.
It's cheap too, totally worth the expedition to East Los if it isn't in your vicinity. I hear the burritos are real good too.
I'd give this place a solid 4.5 stars...minus 0.5 stars on cleanliness and restrooms being outside. But other than that I absolutely loved the fish tacos!!
We ordered some fish taco plates and a carne asada quesadilla and of course some Whorechatas! YUM. I loved the fish tacos...they were small but very filling. The quesadilla was okay...I'd stick with just the fish tacos. The salsa that they had was very yummy. Plus the prices are right up my alley...cheap! The rice and beans were whatever, nothing special.
I'm coming here next time I'm craving some fish tacos! Thanks yelp app on the phone...if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have been able to search what was nearby and found this lovely fish taco place!
I had one fish taco and one shrimp taco, both were delicious but I'll be sticking with the fish taco from now on.
Yes, best fish taco I've ever had.
Make sure you try the mild peppers coated with chili from the condiment bar...NOM NOM NOM.
BTW - everybody keeps talking about $1 Wednesdays but the tacos are only like $1.75 anyways, lol.
Best fish taco's hands down!!!!
I live in the Norcal and I cant find anything as good as this. Best time to go is wednesday for .99 cent fish taco's. I ordered 10 and wanted more! I like the mixed seafood cocktail, great tasting and perfect companion with a fish taco. The mild peppers covered with chili is also great dont forget to try it. The place is really small and gets packed quick especially on lunch hours.
I recommend this place for good fish taco's, cheap and fast.
$1 fish taco Wednesdays. Shrimp tacos for $1.50. Consequently, you'll probably find me here every Wednesday. Also, the shrimp ceviche tostada is quite refreshing...which I suppose is a strange way to describe food that isn't watermelon, but hey it is what it is.
Small caveat, when you phone in orders it seems to be significantly slower than just going in and ordering regularly. How does "it will be ready in 5 minutes" turn into 30? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up as them just super busy today. Don't know, but just beware.
Fish tacos are simple things: all you need is a piece of deep-fried fish on a couple of corn tortillas, along with shredded cabbage, maybe some tomatoes, a dollop of some crema stuff and a salsa, along with wedges of lime and maybe sliced radishes.
The set-up is pretty much the same. There really isn't a secret to slapping one of these things together, yet I think of these tacos from Tacos Baja Ensenada whenever fish tacos come to mind.
It's kind of a silly thing, but the main, main reason I like these tacos? It's the way they shred their cabbage. I find fish tacos notoriously messy to eat, requiring the patience, dexterity, and experience of a seasoned EOD soldier defusing a roadside bomb. It takes all my KenWa powers to eat these damn things without half the topping cascading onto my lap. It's one of the main reasons why I shied away from eating these things in the first place.
Well, the way this place shreds their cabbage not only makes the taco taste better, giving you a more-or-less equal mouthful of cabbage along with the fish and other stuff, but it makes it a lot more easier for me to eat.
Weird?
Well, sometimes it's little details like this that can make a simple Baja-style fish taco into something extra-special. These tacos, to me, are perfect little handfuls. The fish is, of course, deep-fried perfectly, and the crema, to me, has a nice tang to it that I suspect might be mayo? I don't know, but I likes the whole flavor package.
If you go on Wednesdays, they sell 'em for 99 cents. A fricken' bargain for this kind of quality!
If this taco has taught me anything, it's taught me that a little detail, like how the cabbage is shredded, can make a world of difference for something as simple as a fish taco.
I didn't have the shrimp tacos. I must've overlooked that little menu item, sorry...
Awesome! Stopped in to check this place out over the weekend.... DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
Had a fish taco and shrimp taco and both were delicious. I think I enjoyed the fish taco slightly over the shrimp, but both were pretty damn good thanks to the batter and all the crap they pile on top of it. I was expecting the tacos to be small due to some of the comments on here but two tacos had me completely satisfied. I think on a hungry day I could do 3 tops. I am planning on coming back on Wednesdays when they got the tacos for 99 cents.
Also, for those chavalas that think this is a bad neighborhood.... go back to your gated communities and wait for a trendy twitter truck selling fish tacos (korean fish tacos?) to come to you if you feel uncomfortable in this neighborhood.
Actually 2.5
If you can walk here, fine. But to drive even a mile or 2, not worth it. I was a little disappointed. The fish tacos were ok and the fish and shrimp ceviches were ehhh. Yeah, the neighborhood is not all that either...I wanted to finish my food as fast as I can so we can get the hell outta there. There's about 6-8 tables all so close to each other that it's so uncomfortable to sit and eat. I have to say that the people there are very nice and the service is super fast...we must have waited 2 minutes for our food to be ready. I would rather drive to Taco Nazo or Senor Baja for fish tacos.
2 fish tacos: A+
a million different kinds of ceviche: awesome!
the shrimp ceviche that i tried: refreshing and delicious!!
the radish/peppers/lime bar: wonderful!!
here's what you do.
you get a fish taco. you put lime juice on it. you grab a bunch of those peppers covered in the red powdery stuff, and you timidly take a bite out of the pepper (be careful of the seeds!!) then you take a bite out of your piping hot fish taco. then you chew, and then bite into the pulp of the lime you just squeezed.
at the end of this meal I didn't want it to be over even though I was totally full. so i nibbled at the peppers until all the skin and beautiful red stuff was in my tummy.
it's been a couple hours and now that I have an appetite again i just want more of these fish tacos. and those peppers.
god why doesn't anyone else's review go on and on about how amazing the peppers are?
they are amazing!!
I recently discovered this place and their $1 Fish Taco Wednesdays and let me tell you, its a weekly spot to visit now.
I have only tried their fish tacos and their seafood cocktails and here is what I think.
I'm one to only eat fish tacos when there is nothing else... but with these tacos... I crave them!!!!
Seafood cocktails are usually scarce of the good sea food and are stuffed with tomato, cucumber etc at other places... NOT HERE!!!! They are full of seafood, the way they should be!!!
Plan ahead because it does get crowded... but its good food and great quick customer service. Oh and remember, you can call your order in ahead of time and skip the line... go straight to the side window!!!
Simply an orgasmic fish taco eating experience.
Don't be fooled by its tiny tiny locale and ugly paint job and small tables. What this place has it GIANT DELICIOUS TASTE AND FLAVOR.
Everyone has said it, the best fish tacos. LA MAGAZINE has consistently rated this joint as having the best fish tacos in town.
Pro:
* fish tacos
* shrimp cocktail
* tostadas of ceviche
* Amazing self serve condiment bar (with pickled yellow peppers)
*accept credit including amex
Cons:
* close way too early ( 8pm or 9pm)
* if you sit outside, peddlers solicit purchase of candy, etc.
* limited parking and seating
* all cons outweigh a visit to this place by far
Every time we visit Mom, it is a must pit stop. Beyond the fish tacos, the shrimp cocktails and ceviche tostadas are worth the drive here. It is near the corner of Whittier and Atlantic. Off the 60 Pomona fwy's Atlantic offramp.
Nothing compares.
My husband and I grew up in Texas, so when we moved here we were used to beefand chicken in Mrxican food and wary of fish and shrimp tacos.
Well, we were in the area and found this place on Yelp, not knowing that fish and shrimp were pretty much the only choices here. We decided to sack up and try it, and I'm SO glad we did. We each got the combo with one fish and one shrimp taco, am they were AWESOME. Will definitely return.
I'm so lucky that this place is close by! Their fish tacos are seriously the best...full of flavor with fresh, airy pieces of battered fish (or shrimp), cradled in a warm tortilla, topped with fresh crunchy cabbage, a crema sauce, hot sauce, tomatoes, cilantro and red onions. My mouth waters just thinking about them! Their horchata is really good too...not to sweet with just enough cinnamon in it.
Their burritos are great...and HUGE! I think that it must be the size of a small baby, but I was still able to scarf the whole thing down. They also have a great deal, where for $4.99, you can get 2 fish tacos, a side of beans and rice and a small drink! It doesn't get any better than that! Plus they accept Visa and MasterCard for all amounts. Yessss!
Don't forget on Wednesdays, they have 99 cent fish taco day! If you think it's packed the rest of the week...ooowee Wendnesdays are crazy! It's also packed during lent, on Friday's of course...you can only guess why!
Taco Baja Ensenada is known for their fish tacos..
but i enjoyed the shrimp tacos more.
a fish taco would cost you $1.59 and a shrimp will cost you $1.99
i think it's a bit pricey for tacos..
i'm not sure if you have to ask for avocado.. because i didn't get any. :(
although TBE has good flavor..
it's not my first choice for a good taco.
I love this place. Good Value. About $1.50 for fish tacos and around $2 for my favorite the shrimp tacos. They have specials on Wed on the tacos. Must grab some of their marinated peppers. So good as a compliment to the tacos pluse theyre free.
Ok, so a lot of places make fish tacos...some chains and even a place on Hillhurst called something like "World's Best Tacos" but the best fish taco place is in East L.A called Tacos Baja. The crazy thing is that their shrimp tacos are even better than their fish. These are Baja style tacos with a white fish deep fried with an amazing golden batter topped with shredded cabbage, salsa, finely diced red onion, cilantro and some crema. The fish tacos I actually had in Baja don't even come close to these. FYI, Wednesday is 99 cent taco day which is ridiculous for tacos this large and delicious. It's already a bargain at $1.59. I'm glad Chris suggested we go there tonite.
I'm not an expert in tacos and have not been to many fish taco establishments. I found the fish tacos here to be tasty and filling. The fish tacos comes with a generous piece of fried battered fish and the flavoring of the sauce makes it a tasty taco. Also, the shrimp cocktail with extra splashes of lime is delicious! The Horchata drink is pretty good too.
Cons: Doesn't feel like a safe neighborhood. There were flies near the condiment bar. The tables and floors looked dirty. I had to wipe the table down myself. The staff and other customers did not appear friendly. Being the only asian person dining there that night, I felt I got a lot of strange looks...or more like surprised looks. I wonder if they don't get a lot of asian customers there.
Pros: Tasty fish tacos and shrimp cocktail at reasonable prices. Private parking lot behind the restaurant.
Asked for a vegetarian burrito and was turned away. Great way to get business ay?
TBE is good, so good that I drive all the way from Pasadena to this ghetto part of Los Angeles. I wish they'd just open up a Pasadena location, because I get lost sometimes trying to read all the signs in Spanish. But whatever, I guess it's not EXACTLY Mexico...it is pretty dang close though...
Fish tacos are good; I love their creamy tangy white sauce. I also like getting vegetarian burritos - beans, rice, cabbage, light on the cheese ("light on the cheese" is important, or you may get a pound of it in your veggie burrito).
They could stand to take a hint from their Whittier location (also on Whittier Blvd) and clean a little more often - the floors tend to be dirty and littered with napkins and loose radishes, but it's delicious so I just take my food to go and avoid looking at the mess.
Wow.
This was so outrageously good that the group I went with continued ordering ceviche after we were done with our meals. I have been to both Siete Mares in Silver Lake and Best Fish Taco in Ensenada, and while I'd argue that the former outperforms the latter, neither can compete with this East LA staple.
The fish tacos here are deep fried in a flavorful batter which results in a texture that approximates onion rings. They are slathered in a delicious white molé which, I can only imagine, is derived from pure fat. The toppings include subtly seasoned onions and fresh cabbage. The masa grain is fine, making for a soft and doughy tortilla. I am told that the shrimp is equally delicious, if not better. The ceviche is also outstanding, extremely fresh and immaculately seasoned.
Go, as soon as possible.
In the words of James Lipton...Scrumptulecent.
I've been to Ensenada Mexico and the fish tacos here take the prize for most authentic. The fish was lightly fried and what seems to be lard and the sauces...OH, the SAUCES! were heaven.
Also had a shrimp Cherveche which was just as good.
To top off the whole authentic-ness of Ensenada, the cokes were from glass bottles!!
By the time I was finished eating, I was half expecting a kid to come by my table and sell me chick-lets or hand made braclets.
HAH! Screw you swine flu! I can get Ensenada quality tacos in LA!
THE BEST SHRIMP TACOS!
Every time I have gone the place is PACKED and there is a good reason, the food is delicious! I have only had their Shrimp tacos....next time i will try the ceviche because it looks great!
I just got back from Los Angeles, and i miss them already :o(

Pros:
- Great tasting fish and shrimp tacos.
- Crab ceviche was pretty good as well.
- A better alternative to Taco Nazo.
Cons:
- $1.59 for fish taco, and $1.99 for shrimp taco, portions are small, will take quite some $ to get full.
- $1 Wednesdays offer no longer valid.
- Located in East LA south of the 60 fwy, sort of not on the way to anywhere.
- Not in the safest neighborhood.
- No beer or alcohol.
Bottom Line: Probably the second best place I've found for Fish and Shrimp Tacos in the Greater Los Angeles Area. While it is better than Taco Nazo in El Monte, my first place still goes out to "Best Fish Taco in Ensenada" located on Hillhurst in Los Feliz.
Mmmm the fish tacos were the best I've had yet. i had combo #1: two fish tacos served with rice and beans and a soda for a total of $5.40. The tacos were fresh, crispy, and flavorful. Great with the grilled chilies and radishes. There was a long line and the food came quicker than i expected. I barely got my straw and they were done.
I am definitely looking forward to my next visit.
There's something about the synergy of great fish taco which makes for a treat which satisfies your entire mouth mouth --
-the part that likes fatty creaminess
-the part that likes fried
-the part that likes fresh squeezed lime
-the part that likes tortilla
-the part that likes protein
-the part that likes to order food en Espanol
Your mouth enters Tacos Baja Ensenada unloved, it leaves having realized its destiny.

Still the best fish tacos in LA County. To all the people that think this is a bad neighborhood I'm not sure where you are from. Beverly Hills? It's a perfectly safe neighborhood, thanks to the LA County Sherrifs (no LA Cops).
Anyway, I digress. The fish tacos are still amazing every time I go here. I do miss my favorite place in San Marcos (SD County) but these are 90% as good.
Shrimp tacos and Ceviche are good too, by the way. I've had both a few times now.
Non-fish-tacos are still mediocre.

Excellent fish tacos. I bought a burrito de asada for my non-fish-eating wife and it was big but… Read more »
I go to Ensenada ...a lot and this place should change the name of their establishment.
What an insult to the deliscious fish tacos of Ensenada (found in the Mercado Negro by the pier).
This place doesn't even compare...and their beans are the greasiest I've ever had. I don't know why it's always packed.
I guess people who go there just don't know where else to find fish tacos so they settle for the place that claims they make them Ensenada style. Yeah right! They wish!
*i live in east l.a., less than a mile from this place, and it's not even worth that short ass drive.
This place has the best fish tacos in the area. I tried many fish tacos from the westside to the eastside and even paid $12.00 for fish tacos at other restaurants. So this place is even more amazing to me as they have .99 cent wednesday fish tacos! Don't let the low price turn you off, it's worth a lot more than a buck.
The fish has a fresh clean flavor and is coated with a light crunchy coating. They fry to order so you'll always have a nice crispy hot fish taco. There is a good proportion of fish so the breading is not going to overpower the taco. The crema slaw is a perfect compliment to offset the fried fish.
I've taken people who don't like fish and made them converts. My biggest convert was my dad who totally hated fish, but now he's been going there with his friends. You won't go wrong if you're after one of the best fish tacos in LA! (I would have given a 4.5 rating but I'm saving the 5 star rating for Taco Nazo).
It can get a bit busy at prime time for lunch so I usually go before after the crowd. This place has been rated as one of the best fish tacos by Los Angeles Magazine and LA Weekly. Sometimes you wonder what those food critics were thinking, but they got it right this time.
Call me Lucky Cuz i live exactly a block a way from this place ! so ha ha ha ha ..na na na na .... lol jk ! fish Tacos -Amazing ! Too bad they dont sell Coronas cuz Coronas + Fish tacos= Heaven to your stomach lol!
i recently ordered a shrimp burrito ! awwwww i love it ! cant get enough of it . ! this place is sooo good !
real small
take my food to go or i'll eat there if theres room ! i dont like when guitar players or accordian players come in and start singing all loud. its like c'mon man i'm trying to eat and socialize wit my friends i dont want to talk over your music ! lol
EAST LOS ANGELES REPRESENT !
I went with my brother in law's family and my sister to hang out at this east los fave. I was blown away with the awesomeness of their tacos.
I highly recommend the fish tacos con todos. cream, salsa, and everything. We chowed down and hung out on the patio all night. I ended up eating way too much, but how can you resist with tacos so good...?
I pass by this place everytime I'm going out to my gf's house. i will need to stop there again. i look longingly, only to remember that I already have dinner plans, or am already late to be somewhere.
As God as my witness, I shall return.
Once upon a time this was a Troy's Burgers that has now reincarnated into Tacos Baja Ensenada. Hooray!
I can only speak to the fish tacos and the grilled chiles. Excellent!
It must be good because a beautiful Telemundo channel 52 news woman and her camera man were wolfing down seafood cocktails. That's in my gun sites next time I'm there.
The cocktail not the woman. Did I just say that? Dork.
If the quality of your food can be judged by the audacity of color you use to paint your restaurant, then rest assured that this place serves some amazingly good food.
I won't argue whether these are, or are not, the best shrimp and fish tacos outside of Ensenada, but I wouldn't hesitate to defend them against any other competitor in Los Angeles. These tacos are simply delicious, but you do need to eat them fairly quick so that they don't get soggy on you.
Just like in Baja, the seafood cocktails here are fresh and tasty too. The restaurant has a seafood bar full of octopus, abalone, clams, shrimp and scallops that are served in in a spiced Clamato cocktail with generous amounts of fresh avocado. Grab a table outside, add some Tapatio, some pepper, squeeze in some lime, add just a touch of salt and enjoy.
To round out the meal, you can help yourself to all the salt and paprika sauteed peppers you want, but beware: every 6-10th pepper can get pretty hot.
The Cashier speaks perfect English, they take credit cards and they are only a few minutes off the 5 freeway. On Wednesday the fish tacos are 99 cents and the shrimp are $1.50, but any other day they are still a steal.
Taco Baja Ensenada is worth a road trip, but considering everyone travels the 5 between Los Angeles and Orange County sooner or later, it makes a great quick lunch spot next time your passing through east Los Angeles.
I don't get to the Eastside as much as I'd wish, but I come here every few months after taking my little Japanese Grandma to visit the cemetery in Boyle Heights. She loves Tacos Baja Ensenada and she requests it as a special treat.
We always get combo #1, two fish tacos, beans, rice and a soda. I load it up with limon and Tapatio. Grandma prefers hers straight. Once in a while the crust is oily, but usually it is crispy and light. I always struggle to pick it up without all the cabbage falling out. Napkins are my friends.
I've tried the ceviche tostada once and had a shrimp burrito too, but both couldn't stand up to the tacos. I always say I'll try a coctel, but I'm always appalled that fake crab is in the showcase next to all the other fresh seafood and revert to the tacos.
Love the crispy, creamy, spicy flavor combo!
I love this place its really good...my bf said its close to the tacos he had in tj....meaning its good...and yes its CLEAN the got an A...yay
they also have fish taco wed.ONLY $1!! SOO worth it
I recently was brought here by a friend...and been there 3 times already...
their price are really good too
$1.59 for their tacos (normal price for their fish taco)
their shrimp in the tacos are battered n fried jux giving u guys a heads up...
I would give them 5 stars but this one time...I had order the cocktail..assuming it came with everything...BUT wen i go my order there was only shrimp...soo disappointed...i wanted the clams octopus...and everything else=(...YOU HAVE TO TELL THEM WAT U WANT IT IN or else they'll jux give u shrimp...
i love mexican seafood. i love fish tacos. i love tacos baja ensenada.
in the heart of east los, this bright sunny spot serves up some killer fish tacos. the combination plates are good, fresh, and affordable. my favorite is the 1 fish + 1 shrimp taco with rice and beans. the rice isn't that red rice that's passed off as "mexican rice" but rather a more subtle white rice with carrots and peas. i really liked the beans too. they're not like the typical mexican food joint beans. the sides are delicious and taste like something your abuelita would make.
but enough about sides! the tacos here are what you should come for. two warm corn tortillas filled with fish and/or shrimp that's been battered and fried to a golden crisp. they're topped off with cabbage (lettuce is for posers!) tomatoes, salsa, and a dollop of cream (can't remeber if it was sour cream, or the more typical crema mexicana but it was good).
next time i'm going to give the other menu items a chance. i went with a group of cousins one day and one of them ordered a tostada campechana which was packed with mixed seafood and avocado. another cousin ordered the shrimp cocktail which was packed with shrimp.
i definitely recommend this place for those seeking for a taste of baja.
When I am in the Este de Los Angeles, I'll stop by for great shrimp tacos and seafood cocktails. The "secret" white sauce that comes with the fish or shrimp tacos is simply the best.
They offer the typical seafood cocktail combinations. I usually go for the shrimp and octupus. Clean, refreshing and tasty. I like that they give you small packets of Tapatio sauce and crackers to go without asking. You can even buy an avocado, sliced and ready to eat for your dining pleasure.
They also have phenomenol roasted guerito (yellow) chiles at a side table to complement your meal. They are roasted, oiled and dusted with what I think is paprika. Some are hot and some are not. Like a box of chocolates, you'll never know what you're gonna get.
I vote for opening up a branch in Pasadena!
We used to trek down to Ensenada for some deep sea fishing. There you can go to the fish market, buy a fish fresh off the boat and walk to the many stalls outside the market where they will gut, batter, and fry the fish while you wait. Nothing here in the US beats that experience. This place is probably the closest.
Blah blah people can say there are other better fish taco joints but people can say that about almost all foods so with that said this is a definite fish/shrimp taco spot that does not suck, some may say nearly amazingly wonderful goodness in ya mouth, this place will make you happy, everything I have ever ordered from here has been great.
