The Migas Taco was so average.. eggs overcooked and not moist/cheesy/yummy like it should be. One of the Agua Frescas tasted like it was squeezed from a dog diaper (same color too). The Al Pastor Taco was good but not spectacular.. not sure what all the hype is about? Oh.. and there is no ice available in the beverage area.. isn't that a crime or something during the Austin summer?

I am tempted to call Taco Xpress "overrated", but that implies that it's not good in relation to its reputation...which is not quite accurate. The truth is that this place is just not good, no matter what reputation it may have.
I have waited to write a review since the last time I was there, thinking that my bland crispy taco plate was just an off night for an usually good taco joint. Well, we went there again tonight and the crispy tacos were just as bad.
The meat is bland, bland, bland. Adding a bit of potato does not, in any way, enhance the taste if it's just as bland as the ground beef. The coup-de-grace, though, was that the taco shells were REALLY stale. I once left a bag of tortilla chips open for 2 weeks and those chips were crispier than the tortilla shells I had tonight, I kid you not. The fact that I'd leave a bag of chips open for 2 weeks and THEN still eat them might make you question my right to critique food. Nevertheless, in this case I know of what I speak. The Wife also whiffed, ordering barbacoa tacos that were dry and completely lacking in flavor.
Two bad experiences here have really bummed me out. The good reviews really make me want to like it because it would improve my Austin-street-cred and impress all of my Cedar Park-living friends...but I can't. I thought it was horrible.

Why oh why did you let Wal-greens give you the shaft, crazy Maria?
Taco Xpress is one of my favorite breakfast taco joints, but since the redesign I just don't like going there. If it's not crowded (which is rare), it's fine, but when the line of people waiting to order stretches out the door and blocks off the pick-up spot, as well as the order beer spot, it downright inconvenient.
My suggestion - try it really early in the morning on a Saturday or Sunday, or on a weekday. Do not by any means wait for church to get out, it's no longer worth it.

One star is for the atmosphere: definitely "Austin-y" and they do a good job handling the large crowds.
One star is for the salsas and pico.
And only one star for the breakfast tacos. Sorry, but I just find them run-of-the-mill. In a town where you can't spit without hitting someone selling breakfast tacos, you have to be pretty damn outstanding to, you know, stand out, and I just don't think they do anything too spectacular at Taco Xpress.

Have you ever been to Mexico? Well, I have and this little spot made me feel like I was back there!! I love it! The dirt patio, with crap hanging all over, the small little cafe with a bunch more crap in it. Super friendly staff cooking up the BEST breakfast tacos I have had so far in Austin.....ah,.. good times.
I love that you can bring your dog and sit out in the patio. They have love music on Sundays which is always nice. And the tacos are CHEAP!!!! Love it!

I finally got a chance to visit this legendary taco establishment today. My housemate and I took a road trip from RR to south Austin just for this reason. I have to say we were not disappointed.
I tried a picadillo taco and an al pastor taco. The picadillo taco was stuffed with ground beef, potato, carrot, lettuce, and tomato. I added some salsa roja to it and it was very good. However, the al pastor taco was superb. The pork was flavorful and moist. I really enjoyed it.
My housemate had the chicken enchiladas. He begrudgingly gave me a bite. I thought it was quite yummy. He did, as well, if his empty plate was a testament. Well, that is not quite true. He wasn't able to finish his rice and beans. Why? The enchiladas were so full of chicken! They don't skimp on the portions here. I was also stuffed to the gills.
We had a side of chips and salsa. I have to say the salsa roja is just wonderful. It was very fresh and we just couldn't stop eating it, even though we were already quite full.
I learned what chimichurri is today! That was super cool. In case you don't know, it is cilantro mixed with some sort of very spicy chili. It was rockin' hot and delicious! As we took off, the guy at the counter asked what we had. He said those were all good choices, but to try the pollo guisados taco next time. In that taco, the chicken is cooked in a chipotle sauce. He said it is amazing and not too spicy, which I can dig.
Anyway, Maria didn't let us down. We will definitely be back. Check this place out if you have an extra few bucks. You won't regret it.

Sampled the Al Pastor and the Migas tacos. The great plus is that the tortillas are fresh, that is a huge bonus. The Al Pastor taco was very good, the carnitas inside had a nice flavor and there was some cilantro and onions, but not too much. The Migas was a let down, because the tortillas were not crunchy and were hardly noticeable. I like ranchero or a red salsa on my migas, so I went to add some, but their red salsa is bland and totally unworthy. They had another tangy vinergary salsa with heavy amounts of cilantro, which was very good and had a decent heat level, but not appropriate for migas IMO.
The decor is way too loud and trying way too hard IMO.
Still, the tortillas and the interesting salsa they had warrants another visit and at least 4 stars, just based off the Al Pastor taco. Maria's Taco Xpress might be wildly hyped, but does deserve some of it, if I had my choice of breakfast tacos, it would definitely be the ever so popular Al Pastor.
This is one of the most over hyped places in Austin. There are sooo many places that are better. Everything is cooked to DEATH (whatever you do, do NOT order the mixed veggie taco. Those green beans and eggplant have been boiled for days.) If you're stuck going here because all your friends like it or there's a band playing you want to hear, get the chips and queso and a beer or 5. You'll be happy then.

super cheap breakfast tacos, easy in-and-out, great vibe and decor. i especially like the egg and potato breakfast taco, which does a pretty darn good impression of a tortilla espaa. a fun casual spot -- check it out.
I came here hung over from a Wednesday night at SXSW festivities looking for strong coffee and breakfast tacos. Wow! To think I almost went to some deli down the street instead. So glad I didn't cause this place rocked! The statue outside and appearance of this restaurant was intriguing and the inside was just as great. The staff was super friendly and since there was a band performing on the huge patio outside there was ample seating inside.
I got to recharge my batteries and hang out for a bit while I mapped out what shows I would be going to that night. The egg and chorizo tacos were the best! I also like how they let you add different things to your taco, so I got a potato, ham & cheese. Very cheap! Damm they need one of these establishments in Houston!!

Mediocre. Thats really all I can say about Xpress. Their chips are nice n thin, the way they're supposed to be, but apart from this the tacos were not to my criterion. Mainly because the chicken-something I ordered was pretty bland, and the barbacoa was tasteless. E-gads! Barbacoa is something I take seriously when it comes to tacos, and my apologies Maria, but you effed that one up. InconCEIVable!
Granted I came here when there wasnt a band playing on their patio stage, but even with killer music I doubt it would have improved the lack of taste of mis tacos. I'd say their drinks have a better chance at fame than their tacos do. The drunker you are, the better Maria's tastes. As with all food. But why subject yourself to mediocrity when you can experience greatness 2 miles away? Frankly, Torchy's trumps Maria's any day. +1 for trailer tacos.

When I talk about Mexican food and tacos I always have to start out with, "I'm from Houston." I have to because it seems Austinites have been abducted and held hostage from truly good Mexican food that is still economical.
This place is blah. The corn tortillas were pretty good but everything else needs help. My girlfriend loved this place and then she came with me to Houston. We dropped by some of my old favs and all I've heard since is, "How do they do that?" It is so sad to think that Taco Xpress is considered great Austin Mexican food. I guess ignorance is bliss. Good for those of you.... bad for me
If someone from Houston loves this place.... they are from the burbs and probably see taco bell as a Mexican restaurant

This place is odd, odd like Austin. If you have visitors in town, bring them there. On usual occasion, it may not be my pick for taco for several reasons.
Went there during lunch few weeks ago and boy was the line long! After you ordered at the door you still have to wait at the cashier line to pay before you can sit down to chill. The whole logistics of the order system is just weird and inefficient. Because we were standing in line and having people walking pass us up and down and I was a little annoyed by the confusion. After paying for the order, we looked for a place to sit at the outdoor patio to enjoy some live music. The band and the crowd were pretty awesome. Seeing people in tie-dye shirt dancing in trance was rather entertaining, I wish I was less self conscious and join the fun.
I had their breakfast taco (egg and chorizo) and picadillo chalupa, it was alright... the breakfast taco is overcooked. I have had better somewhere else. The chalupa was just too messy, not exactly like taco when it came out.
Overall, it was a cool experience to dine there but I wouldn't go there for their tacos.

As I write this, I fear that there will be a contract put out on my life by the So Austin Mafia... So, I added a star for protection purposes. I will also add another star, because I probably have my head up my bum expecting something different to what Maria's is. It is an institution, and has a very loyal gathering. It's a hang out, and sitting outside I got a sudden flash back of the Armadillo beer garden. There is a cornucopia of stuff to look at in a keep Austin Weird vein. It is whimsical perhaps magical place for some. This is lost on me. Hence the head/bum reference. Perhaps so many folks are in love with what is all around them, and not what is on their plate. I wouldn't set out to go there, but have gone a couple of times for teacher happy hour. The taco's are well, average. Pile on the fresh condiments, and they are better... so why can't they start out great, and compliment them with condiments? Salsa and chips good. Queso, melted cheese in Styrofoam cup. Margaritas, decent, powdered mix in the frozens, mango nice change of pace. However, plastic cups, my big pet peeve. Patio, nice, but don't wear shoes you care for since it is a mixture of clay and stones, making it muddy when it rains, and extremely dusty when it's dry. Music... since I have been there only on fridays, I didn't care for the band, it was loud, and the venue is small, so no conversation allowed. However, last night, the food channel was there filming a show on dives and diners.. I wonder what they call Maria's?

Well, it's not like this place needs another good review. But here I go anyway.
I'm in love with their vegetarian tacos! Any other place could combine rice and black beans in a warm corn tortilla and I'd be stoked about them too. But next to Las Manitas, Maria's has some of the best vegetarian tacos around. I like that their's doesn't come with cheese though.
The salsa is fantastic. I'd buy it in bulk if I could. Maybe I can. Hmmm...
The queso is also a favorite, although I try to avoid the stuff. I'm trying to lose some of the weight. It has a nice cheddar-y flavor that you don't taste often in this age of processed cheese product. Finding sliced jalapenos in the bottom of the bowl is like finding extra cherries in your cherry limade. Mix some of the salsa in for an extra kick.
I've tried their migas tacos after hearing rave reviews, but I'm not a fan. The eggs are overly cooked, making them chewy. They're almost a chewy omelet consistency wrapped in a tortilla.
The seating is also a little hard to come by on cold nights when everyone passes on the patio seating. I noticed they have trivia on Tuesday nights. It didn't seem quite as official or lively as some of the other live trivia around town, but still cool.

I had heard you were good, Maria's, but I had no idea! Sure, you are easy on the eyes and have so much to look at. You ARE beautiful on the inside and the outside. Truly what makes Austin unique. And then, I ordered one of your breakfast tacos. Really, I ordered 2, and some side potatoes, and some chips and salsa. Paired with the 2 tacos my partner ordered and our drink, our bill came to under $13 for breakfast. Not too shabby! They were, as others have said, are among the best in our galaxy. We were unable to finish all of our food as there was so much. I was wholly unprepared for this religious experience.
Then, we entered the church. Ok, it was the patio, but it WAS Hippie Church on Sunday morning. What an awesome experience. Where can you eat tacos, drink beer, dance, and hear gospel at noon on a Sunday?
it was busy, that's for sure -- a line out the door just to order food. But the wait wasn't very long and the food and atmosphere made up for it.
Only down side is parking was tough, there are ugly condos surrounding you, and the old yuppies who thought it was cool to see the hippies dancing. Get in your jags and go home.

I love Maria's and have become a fixture on Sunday mornings. Mainly because I love the gospel brunch, I mean where else can you devour a delicious bean, egg and cheese breakfast taco while listening to "Jesus, kick me through the goal post of life?"
It's wonderful and I love it. I definitely think the breakfast tacos are better than dinner. But, I won't snub my nose at dinner either, I just prefer breakfast. And, I get 2 tacos in the morning and it fills me up all day, sometimes I can't finish the second, so $4 isn't bad. Plus, they have $4 Mimosas in case you need a little Vit. C.
Tuesday nights is trivia night, so that's pretty fun too. I enjoy the humor of the guy who puts it on. It's pretty empty at that time, so come on Austin, play some trivia!

Maria's Taco Xpress is as eclectic Austin authentic as it gets.
If you're new to town (obviously), you might not know that Taco Xpress has been keeping Austin weird for years. More so that just about anywhere else...
You know all those big condos going up all over town? Maria fought them... and won.
Maria's was a hole in the wall... as hole as hole can get. More hole than Courtney "i can't keep my shirt on" Love. Basically an afterthought next door to a trailer park. No joke.
Maria grew a following because of her cheap and generous tacos and her great service. The place was borderline scary but so "keep Austin weird" that it made Leslie look like George Clooney. (nice pecs George, but no contest).
Trailer park owner sells land to condo developer but Maria has a long-term-lease and she wouldn't let the developer build until they built her a new place (on the same land) and salvaged a lot of the kitsch that made Marias... well... Marias.
So the reason her place looks like it is "trying hard" is because it is new. But what it represents is great tacos at a reasonable price... keeping Austin weird... beating the Condos... it doesn't get any better or more authentic. And I make my living off of buying and selling condos... yes, I'm a realtor... but I LOVE that Maria stood her ground and saved part of Austin in the process.
Those of you who think the tacos are bland... IT'S CALLED A "SALSA BAR" (and one of the best in town). Look it up on wikipedia since you obviously don't know how to use it or what it's for.
I recommend the queso... ask for an extra bowl (they always give it, no problem) and scoop a lot of the salsa from the salsa bar into the extra bowl so you can mix the two at your table. The Pollo Guisado (sp??) is really good... might want an extra tortilla because it is pretty big. And the Al Pastor are good as well. If I'm really hungry, I'll throw in a migas taco (again, an extra tortilla is a must).
So go after apple pie or baseball or Pat Sajak if you will... but lay the hell OFF of Maria's.

That frowny face summarizes my experience with this place.
"blah blah blah staple blah blah blah classic Austin blah blah blah decor"
I don't care if places are "cool" or "very Austin." If they suck, they suck.
Sure the decor rocks, but it seems like the place is trying too hard to be "eclectic Austin" instead of just being it naturally. The vibe, to me, is that its a place where UT students and tourists go to think that they're "keeping Austin weird." They serve the tiny tacos, so you have to get 3 in order to feel full (not a criticism, just stating a fact). Sure the prices aren't too steep ($2 for a tiny taco, BUT anywhere else they'd be $1.30-$1.50), but you get what you pay for. The food is REALLY bland - some of the worst I've had in Austin.
The last time I was there, my friends and I were relaxing on the back patio (discussing how awful the food was - mine vegetarian, theirs meat) when the band came on. The guy was SO bad that we left carrying our food with us - eating our tacos out the door and in the car as we ran far away from this place - never to return.

I am addicted to this place like a Sixth Street vagrant is to crack. From the first time I stepped foot in this wonderful chapel of grease I have never questioned just how amazing this place is.
The new building and decor is funky, cool and definitely should please the "Keep Austin Weird" crowd. I love the outdoor patio area with it's dirt floors, wooden picnic tables and cool vibe. I have even seen some pretty decent bands playing out back.
The food is awesome, the epitome of greasy tacos and just plain tastiness. I always get the chicken, but I think I have had it all by now. The meats are seasoned well, tasty and never dried out. The chips are good, the queso is OKAY, it can be a little runny sometimes though. But who really cares because this place is CHEAP, the food is GREAT and it's all at a great location.
You have to take your out of town friends here to try it, it is very good and they won't be disappointed. It's funky, it's fresh, it's greasy goodness.

Lea and I just recently made our first trip to Taco Express for a weekday lunch. We had tried to get in a few weekends ago, but it was so crowded we didn't even try. We did notice that there was a live band playing on the outdoor portion called the "patio" or "Hippie Church." What a crazy, weirded out, fun place! They have really pulled together all the bad anti-establishment decorating taste of the hippie era, and actually turned it into an interesting if not intriguing dcor. If nothing else, it will keep you scanning the walls and rafters looking at the old metal advertising signs and really bad artwork to discover yet another "cool" something or other tucked somewhere. The clientele at 1:30 in the afternoon included business folks on a late lunch hour, several young couples or groups, and one young lady with green hair wearing leopard-skin hose and shorts. She fit right in.
We ate our meal in the outdoor patio area with it's dirt floors, 2x4 and 4x4 wooden tables and birds working the dirt for tidbits thrown down by patrons. The roof is clear plastic panels, so you get the feeling of being outdoors, particularly when the side doors are propped open. Service was quick. There was a short line, but you pay when you order, and the fellow running the register has had some practice. He was very good; quick and efficient. We were soon on our way to seek out just the right table out on the patio.
Oh . . and the FOOD!!! We went there because of the name. Tacos! Express! We ordered the Crispy Taco plates, chips and drinks, all of which cost less than $19, and the portions were so big neither of us finished the meal. The plate comes with an oversize portion of refried beans and another of rice. The tacos are filled with a fairly mild blend of taco meat, cheese and veggies, so you can spice them up as much as you want at the salsa bar. Lea and I both like spicy salsa, and theirs was a good tomato-ey salsa, cilantro with a good jalapeno presence and even better back kick. We liked it so much we laced our tacos with it. We thought the experience was very good, and will definitely go back!!
The downsides: parking, and getting out of the parking lot. Parking on their property is minimal. I notice that some of the other postings say that you will have to park elsewhere and walk when they are busiest, and that may not be so bad. We left a little after two in the afternoon, and it took us nine minutes just to get out of the lot onto Lamar! And, there were no cars in front of us, Lamar was just that busy. And, every time I saw a hole in traffic that would let me turn left, there were one or more cars sitting in the turn lane waiting to get into the lot we were trying to leave, and I couldn't turn until they moved.
But, still, the food is good, the epitome of greasy tacos and just plain tastiness. And, for those of us who experienced the sixties and seventies first hand, the dcor will bring smile to your face. If your out of town friends enjoy a good touch of humor served with their meal, this is a fun place to take them. They won't be disappointed. Just keep in mind that my review is on a weekday . . . be sure to read other postings here about the weekends. That is going to be a completely different experience. Regardless, just go!

Whenever I'm feeling disillusioned with life--and it happens a lot unfortunately--I go to Maria's Taco Xpress. Maria's IS my church. I have been here way over a hundred times, and I've not once had a bad experience--not once. No one has ever been rude to me, the food has never been bad--not once. And that says a lot. Furthermore, the place just has a great vibe and energy. I instantly feel in a better mood as my eyes dart around to all visual stimuli, trinkets, and paintings. I remember the old Maria's before the renovation, and I'm amazed that it's still held on to its intimacy even though it is four times as large. Beyond atmosphere, the food just rocks. My favorite is a potato, chorizo, and cheese breakfast taco. I actually don't order much else. I sometimes order a bacon, bean, and egg, which is pretty good too. I pile on the pico de giyo, which is always fresh. Occasionally, I've seen the famous Maria there and every time she has smiled at me. It's clear this place just doesn't take its customers for granted--even with its clear success as a great local business. There is still that "personal" touch. Lots of love clearly goes into this place--and you can feel it. I recommend it highly if you're ever feeling down. A lot cheaper than a shrink.

No offense, but tacos in Austin are a dime a dozen. The last thing I want to do is wait in line to get a small $2-3 taco that is mediocre at best. I think I will go to one of the five taco stands within a quarter mile radius with no line to wait in and cheaper tacos.

Last night I finally had some Taco Xpress..... and it lived up to all the hype. The tacos were awesome, and I couldn't believe how cheap it was. I ordered the beef fajita and El Pastor (pork) tacos and I can't decide which one I like better-- they were both super good.
My only complaint is that the menu didn't have any descriptions, so as a Taco Xpresss virgin I thought I was holding up the line asking questions. Also, the band was a nice touch, but was a little too loud.... I ended up sitting inside so I could hear the dinner conversation. It was too bad, because this place has a great patio.

Maria, you're too cool to be this bland!
Your welcoming arms promised me good, comforting food. Dozens of Yelpers gave me hope of a memorable breakfast taco. The ueber-funky decor got my sense ready for an out-of-the-world treat.
What I got, sadly, is average food, at best. The migas were flavorless eggs with a layer of orange cheese that promised some flavor but tasted strangely plastic. (Oddly, I had forgot to ask to omit the jalapenos; they were left in and they barely had any bite at all.)
The soft tacos were oh-so-ordinary, with thick grocery-store tortillas belying the promise of the nouveau-Tijuana decor.
The obstacle course of chairs, tables and patrons was a bit of a distraction, but it couldn't brighten my spirits after the limp, flavorless potatoes. (The refried beans were quite tasty, though, with salt added.)
I loved the place enough to take several photos on my cell phone for friends. The food, however, was unimpressive enough for me to head back to any of the taquerias in my beloved 78704.
Maria... stay cool, but don't let your coolness distract you from serving great food.

I remember fondly those Ultimate Frisbee days in the middle of the summer, dipping into the creek outside Barton Springs and racing up for Taco Xpress.
I miss you.
I miss you so goddamn very much.
You, see, ever since I left you so many, many years ago, I've been looking for that same feeling I got whenever I visited you. You know, that warm feeling in the belly that comes from having a taco made to my satisfaction. And the wide salsa selection ensures that even if I order the same darn thing every time, it's a different meal.
Come here for breakfast tacos any time. You order it to your liking. You want potato and eggs? Bacon and eggs? Cheese with it? Chorizo? Add some avocado and you have heaven in a tortilla.
See, no one understands breakfast tacos outside of Texas. No One.
I live in San Francisco now. I work in the Mission. And even though I'm deep in the heart of the Mission, still no breakfast tacos. So, I pine away for the breakfast tacos of Taco Xpress. I'll be back soon.

The migas taco is hands down one of my favorite tacos ever. When I order two of these, I'm full and I've only spent about $4. If you order a chorizo, egg, potato, and cheese breakfast taco, they'll stuff it so heavy that it can make a meal all on its own.

There is a reason that Austin staples become Austin staples, and this place couldn't be more of one if they decided to sell office supplies.
Ok, that would be weird, but fact is that Taco Xpress is that sort of habit-forming experience that encourages the blotting out of certain immutable facts, namely, that the place is laid out to encourage roller derby, that the oft-mentioned Walgreen's encroachment forced a creative rearranging of the space setup, and that the food is often good enough to make diners want to stay in the moment.
Or, more likely, to recreate that moment time and time again through repeat visits. Wear your elbow pads to fight the line in the mornings, but don't leave 'til you bite down on something. Hard. This could be the start of a flavorful relationship.
