Review from Colleen R.
Columbus, OH
My mother, sister and I were visiting San Antonio from Ohio and decided to stop here for lunch. We went on a Thursday around 1 pm, and we got a table right away.
All I can say is that it was AWESOME. I ordered a meal and chorizo & egg tacos. The meal was a little forgettable, but the chorizo & egg tacos were absolutely AMAZING. The tortillas are so fresh and delicious. I could eat my weight in just the tortillas. The glasses they give you for the drinks are SO large, but after visiting other restaurants, I realize that is kind of a Texas thing.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting. ORDER THE CHORIZO AND EGG TACOS. You will not regret it! -

Maybe I'm jaded because I've been coming to Taco Taco for 7 years but if you're into trying restaurants that are built on "best of" awards and the hype from reality TV, come give it a shot. Don't get all disappointed when you wait 45 minutes for warm coffee, bottled minute maid orange juice, canned soda and a restroom you don't dare go in.
Also, don't you think for a minute calling for 10 minutes, then waiting on hold for 5 more minutes (while hearing the cashier gossip to a coworker in Spanish), only to hang up and try again THEN finally get your taco order to go in isn't worth the trouble... the tacos are always worth the trouble. It just depends on how badly you want it and how patient you are that day.
3 stars for the over hype that causes a delay in customer service. -
Review from Luigi C.
The tacos here are satisfying and I would say, above average from most taco spots I've tried, but nothing to go crazy about. It's alo unfortunate that since they were featured on Food Network, they decided to up the price of each taco. From what I can remember, my friend and I were charged for additional toppings we added to a taco and ended up paying way too much for the price of one taco. That's a big negative in my book.
With that in mind, the tacos are appetizing and made fresh, but its pretty much your standard breakfast taco. Another downside, the parking at this place is insane, it's like playing tetris in the parking lot! On a positive note, it's located near the Trinity University area, an old school area! Would I go back, yes, but only if I'm in the area. -

I have eaten at numerous mexican restaurants in both Texas and California and this is by far the best mexican food I have ever had. Taco Taco is a small family owned restaurant and the owner takes a lot of pride in her food. I ordered the Chicken Puffy Tacos and they were amazing. All of the plates are very reasonably priced. I actually think it is cheap for all of the food and quality of food that you get. My friend ordered chicken soft tacos and potato and eggs breakfast taco. She was amazed by how good her food was. All of the orders come with the biggest and best pancake like tortillas I have ever had. The service is not the best, but it wasnt horrible. And anytime I go to a small family owned restaurant I dont really count on having the best service. GO EAT AT TACO TACO!!!! You will not regret it.

San Antonio, TX
The food here is pretty good (he flour tortillas are the best part) but the service stinks. From waiting to sit down (there isn't a hostess) to ordering your food, it's some of the worst service I've experienced in a San Antonio Mexican restaurant. They like to claim they have the "Best Tacos in the USA" but as a lifetime taco eater, I beg to differ.

San Antonio, TX
I normally don't eat out when it comes to Mexican food because I prefer the quality and taste of good home cooking, but I have to admit, their flour tortillas are to die for! They're always warm and have the perfect level of chewiness and doughiness. My favorite taco is the rice and bean taco. Since trying this place, I've made it part of my schedule to come here twice a week to satisfy my soft taco craving.

Why this place is even on the map is beyond me. I'm convinced someone from the surrounding wealthy neighborhoods knows someone from the Food Network to be dubbed "the best tacos in America." Just a stone's throw away is Las Salsa's Mexican Restaurant, and though not the best by any means, they are light years ahead of Taco Taco, if you ask me. Food is mediocre and service is mediocre. Sorry, y'all. This place is just completely over-rated.

Went to eat there and had to wait for about 30 minutes to get inside. Waited another 30 minutes to get my food. The waitress did not get my order right. WHen the food arrived it was cold, the rice was burnt, the meat was too greasy and overcooked. not only that, the plate had a crack on the side with a hole in it. Just to look at the plate was disgusting. I did not eat it and when I went to pay for my soda I drank while waiting for my food, the lady at the counter wanted to charge me for something I did not eat. Good Grief !!! I was promised a gift certificate but I never received it. I dont want it either. This place has gone down hill since 2008. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!!!

Any dietician will tell you that eating in your car is a bad, bad thing. You consume without thinking -- snacking absently whilst listening to your fave playlist or talk radio or audiobook if you're a big old nerd like me.
So when we had to skeedaddle out of SA to get to the pubcrawler in Austin (my life needs help) we stopped at Taco Taco, dietitian's advice be damned. Instead, we exited the vehicle for some of "America's Best Tacos" assured by my dear friend that the wait was minuscule and the payoff gargantuan. So we enter this small building with granny wallpaper, nondescript but for the 15 foot long poster reading "America's Best Tacos" strung across the front. We had to wait for 20 mins -- not the minor wait we expected but that's not important.
What IS important is that once we jettisoned out of there, those greasy tacos were a total hangover cure. We slathered them in garlicky salsa, balanced them on a knee, coaxed them out of that all too hardy foil and reveled in each bite of sweet madness, stopping only to swipe at the juicy goodness threatening to pour out the end of the taco. The resulting tummy gurgles of approval indicated sweet success on the taco front. But considering how I was driving with one hand vise gripped around a taco, my eyes closed, savoring each rich nibble, halfway swooning and then having to jerk myself out of the dundundundundundun sound of those dippy things on the side, I'm taking the dietitians advice next time and eating in! -

They lose one star (at least) for not apologizing nor giving any sort of refund when we found a scouring pad mesh wire in the barbacoa.
Barbacoa taco has been the only thing worth getting. Based on my limited experience in this type of mexican food, Taco Taco is the place to buy them. Too bad I may get in a wreck trying to park in their little parking lot just to get a few tacos. Expect to see a lot of Trinity U kids. -

Awesome authentic tacos the joint is owned by a greek lady. So many different styles to chose from. If I lived in San Antonio Id get fat from coming here. The breakfast tacos are great to. I had a chilaquiles taco, potato a la mexicana taco, chicken fiesta taco and a carne asado taco all were stellar! Be prepared to stand outside in the line waiting up to half a hour for service and a seat.

We're both from the area and our recent trip back to visit, my girl and her mother finally took me to Taco Taco. This place rocks!!! Small in size and price but LARGE IN HEART AND FLAVOR! Great tacos, great locals and I can't wait to make this our ritual when we're back in town by going back again, again, again and again!!!!!!! A++++

The sign out front says it all "BEST TACOS IN AMERICA."
No, really though, these things are legit. We had breakfast tacos to go and wanted to turn the car around for seconds on our way out of town. I had bean & egg tacos. Tortillas are plump and freshly made. The service is fast (the owner takes your order at the delapidated old counter) and you can literally watch your taco come to life from there.
This place should lose points for appearance as it is neither all that clean or all that nice, however, the hole in the wall feel it rocks actually adds to the experience. Plus they serve breakfast tacos all day, anyone still serving eggs after 10:30 (ahem, Whataburger) gets bonus points in my book. -

I don't get it. I went in with a completely open mind and left completely disappointed. Processed cheese in my taco? Corn tortillas that had to be sent back? Living in both Texas and Mexico throughout my life, I pride myself in knowing good tacos, great tacos and mind-blowing tacos...this wasn't even an acceptable taco. The only reason I gave Taco Taco two stars was because of the flour tortilla...it was almost perfect.
If you're going to put a banner in front of your taco joint claiming to have the best in America...you'd better be bringing the noise. -
Review from Rod F.

If anyone can find any footage of the food network blessing off on this hole in the wall being the best tacos in town, please let me know, because I just can't bring myself to say these are the best. Maybe second or third, but not the best. Actually, more like 3rd or 4th, again, not first.
The food is average. The eggs are just that, eggs. The potato's are just that...potatos. The guacamole is just that....summer sausage.....all just that. I had a few different things here in hopes of finding that special "oh my God, this is soooo amazing" moment that would justify the banner outside this establishment, but no luck. The guacamole didn't have anything in it, and I needed to add salt and pepper to add flavor to it. If you like your food in an insipid manner, then this is the guac for you. For Pete's sake, Chipotle has WAY better tasting Guac! Have you ever made eggs on a skillet, and didn't bother to add any salt, pepper, onions, red pepper flakes, garlic or anything.....well that's what they taste like. I will give them kudos for the rice, not bad, but nothing to write home about.
Where they gain some laudable criticism is for their home made flour tortillas. These babies are VERY tasty!! I certainly would not mind having just these this and a cup of coffee and be happy. If you put nothing on them they are a great treat all by themselves. If you order a lunch meal here, make sure you order extra flour tortillas. No matter how good these tortillas are, and they are very good, they are not enough to boost this place into the upper realms of 4-5 stars.
If you're in the area, and want a cheap place for some hole in the wall Mexican food, go here, but don't expect amazing tasting, flavorful meats with different sauces from mild to sizzling hot, because you will be disappointed. Otherwise, it's just OK. Don't believe the hype about this place with the banners and all, and whoever on the food network claimed this place the best, should be fired, or at the very least, duck-taped to a pole, made to sing heavy metal songs to the tune of a haiku poem........sound silly, confusing and down right stupid? My thoughts exactly on the food network making those bold claims. -

We never miss this place when we're in town to visit our daughter at Trinity.
If you go in expecting some sort of glamour just because you've read about it in a hip magazine, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. This is down-and-dirty, tasty, cheap breakfast food that is unmatched. They turn tables like pros, and even a long wait isn't that long. Come on a weekday after students are in classes and you have your choice of seats. Attentive waitstaff, hot food and generous portions, all at rock-bottom prices. YUM! -

Bon Appetit crowned them the best breakfast tacos in America. I think that they should also crown them as having the best homemade corn tortillas in the world.
This is an old steak & egg/Toddle house so the space is tiny. You will have to wait most likely but I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Breakfast is where they set the bar but they make a pretty good lunch as well.
Arrive early to give it a try and order your tacos on corn tortillas you will not be disappointed.Listed in: Mexican food Dives and Divas

This place is way over-hyped and is mostly a place where gringos get their taco fix. The tortillas are fresh which is a delight but the fillings are wee bit bland and I found myself piling on salt trying to make up for it.

Taco Taco is getting three stars because of lack of consistency. First time I went there it was phenomenal. Salsa was perfect, tortillas were flawless, and everything was cooked to perfection. Second time I went there it just seemed like everything was a little off. Eggs inside the breakfast tacos were undercooked (and I had four so I had a decent sampling) and overall is just straight up wasn't as good on any front.
I am going to give it a try some other time to see if I get experience #1 or #2, but Taco Haven is yet to let me down for breakfast so it, and not Taco Taco, is my go to place for out-of-town guests right now. -
Review from Joey J.
For years, the breakfast burrito has been my vessel of choice to quickly impart grease into my system after a night of drinking heavily. During my trip to San Antonio, an old college drinking buddy and her husband introduced me to a new such vehicle--the breakfast taco.
Essentially, this is a smaller version of the breakfast burrito. To make up for that, you inevitably order more of them. I ended up ordering the chorizo and egg, the barbacoa and the super taco (containing eggs, cheese, beans and just about every thing under the stars). Did I need three tacos? No. And if I hadn't had the barbacoa second, I probably would have stopped at two. However, the super taco was too good not to consume. Cream containers filled with salsa are on the table for you to load up your taco(s) with tomatoey goodness. The tortillas on these tacos are thicker than normal, and hold up well during the eating process.
My big lesson was how easy it is to overeat when presented so many delicious taco options. Next time I'm hungover in San Antonio, I'll definitely be back (and probably will order too much, yet again). -
Review from Khiem L.
I love this place. I am only sad that I never found this place until my senior year at Trinity, walking distance from the place. I am also sad that now that they have gotten on TV, there is always a huge line here. It was tolerable before but now it's just gotten ridiculous. But to the positives.
The tortillas are fresh and homemade, right in front of you. I don't like corn tortillas because they break so easily and everything but these corn tortillas I would order all the time. So good. I've had a few of their tacos but my favorite has been the fiesta taco. MMM. The chicken is so tender and juicy all the time. The seasoning is perfect. There are so many others but I have forgotten them.
The pirces cant be beat at all either. The tacos are less than 2 bucks and are HUGE. I am afraid to even order the burrito just because I might have to get hauled out of there on a cart.
Why did I find you so late in my life? I need to go back to SA just to eat here again. -

Best tacos in America?? Maybe. They have to be pretty damn close. I originally heard of this place from the Food Network so had to stop by on my road trip to Houston. Pretty typical for a hole-in-the-wall joint, Taco Taco Cafe offers limited seating and a pretty simple menu, 50% of which is tacos.
Out of the breakfast tacos I sampled, the egg and country sausage, egg and chorizo, and potatos and chorizo, the papas y chorizo was definitely my favorite. Not as spicy as I would've hoped but so simple and satisfying. The egg and chorizo not so much. But their tortillas--oh man, so thick and fresh, you can totally tell they're handmade.
Worth the drive. -
Review from Kevin N.
There's a reason that people do funny things: funny things like stand idly on a sidewalk in no apparent rush to enter, no menus in hand, no nothing, really, 'cept the good company of one another and the ability to wait to enter. If you haven't read between the lines just yet, here's the straight skinny: it's not so much that Taco Taco is small, as it isn't exactly, though nor would I reference it as expansive. But it *is* popular. And as long as that's the case, expect a good-humored wait with those who are angling for a seat inside.
Ultimately, the line outside turned out to be much about not long when we were whisked in for a perch not far from the door. And before you know it, I was face deep in some carne guisada tacos that had a gravy bearing grin working front and center. There's been much made of the designation of the tacos here, and I can see why. Taco Taco was great great, and the kind of robust chomp that packs a punch for lunch. I'm not always in town or in this part of town, but I feel certain, if I am and it's lunch. It's on.Listed in: San Antonio, Eponymous

Review from Krys T.
We have a restaurant in San Antonio that was voted "Best Tacos in America" by Bon Appetite and the Food Network. I was fortunate to fill my belly with their famed fare the other day.
It wasn't my first time at Taco Taco so the line out the door didn't scare like it did some of the other reviewers. Taco Taco has several tables inside but is always SO busy that the line to eat there literally goes out the door into the parking lot. They've even set up a rope to contain the hungry masses.
Inside, little tables and booths are jam packed in the small room. You can also sit at the bar and have a cup of coffee or get food to-go. You'll rarely see an empty chair in here. Take that as a sign of good food to come.
Now I'd like to make a recommendation for you should you choose to visit Taco Taco (and you should). Go for breakfast and make sure you have plenty of time because this is their busiest time of day. Order their barbacoa tacos and an ice cold Big Red in a glass bottle.
Have the breakfast of your life.
You're welcome.Listed in: Cheap Eats

Very disappointing. We expected more based on reviews. The wait staff wasn't very friendly and the food was poor. Ordered two carnitas tacos. One person's had veggies in it, the other had nothing but meat. The meat was tough and I wasn't even sure it was carnitas. We were not asked if we wanted corn or flour tortillas, just given flour. Maybe if we'd been given corn we'd have been happier. Yes they were frashly made, but they were doughy, though I prefer corn tortillas. Our chicken tacos were better, but bland compared to what I expected. I expected something special and it wasn't. I've had better tacos in most other small local tacerias I've visited in Ca, Or, and NC. Not worth going out of your way to find.

Not really a big fan of Taco Taco. My biggest complaint is that when I eat there everyone I come in contact with until my next shower knows that I ate there. I never can seem to shake the smell of that place.
Secondly, somehow this place managed to get ranked on the Food Network or something for having good Tacos. I've had better tacos from Taco Bell.
Bottom line, I'd skip Taco Taco and if you want good Mexican food in San Antonio try Alamo Cafe for local fare or Pappasitos for chain food. -

I had a bad experience about a year and a half ago. My boyfriend and I use to go there 5 days out of the week. We would call in the order approximately 10 minutes away so the order would be ready for pick-up (some days they are dead and others you have no wiggle room). We have an arangement where whoever drives gets to stay in the car, the other is dropped off at the entrance to pick-up.
Normally I am the one driving (almost always!), but this particular day he drove so I was stuck going inside...no way around it. I went inside and waited by the register. You can tell which orders are ready because they will be by the register.
Our order was ready but no one was at the register, so I waited patiently. A lady from one of the tables apparently had just finished her meal and walked right in front of me at the register and was checked out immediately. I couldn't believe what just happened!
Once they had completed the process I said excuse me but I have been waiting for at least 5 minutes to get my order that is sitting right there ready. The lady pretty much just said oh well here and just reached for my money.
I was furious...We had been going there regularly for several months. When you add it up 2 tacos+1 lemonade= approx $4.50 without tip X5 days a week x4 months (on the conservative side) = approx $360.00. So that's how much I have spent just to get treated like crap....literally.
After I thought about it during my 3 minute drive to the office I decided I was going to call and talk to the manager, I had never been treated like this before which is why I remember it so vividly not to mention my memory is like an elephant. When I called a lady answered the phone rudely. I said I just had a bad experience and I wanted to talk to the shift manager. Obviously the answer was "that's me"...oh go figure, "ok, well I want to talk to the owner", again the answer was "that's me"....great! I can tell I'm going to get absolutely no where! So I proceeded to tell her what I experienced and she couldn't care less just asked what I wanted her to do about it. I told her take responsibility for what your employees are doing to salvage the returning customers that wont be me anymore, and I hung up.
We boycotted them for about 8 months (although I think he went every now and then to get his fix)...it was a torturous 8 months because I do love their bean and cheese. Even when our office would call in a taco order I wouldn't get one if it was taco taco (half the time we went somewhere else-yeah really). We just started going back but definitely sparatically. After our return, I call her my boyfriends "girlfriend" as sweet older lady, asked why he hadn't been in. He told her what happened and the owner had taken care of our order "on the house".
They do have good food, but just like any other place they are going to have good and bad days. Good days melt in your mouth taco...bad day add a lot of salt. If you go...don't expect great customer service. Just expect a decent taco..decently fast. -

The tacos are good, but they're definitely not the best and the salsa leaves something to be desired. I do like the fresh, thick homemade tortillas. The line is long, but moves pretty fast. Definitely worth a try, but not going back soon.

I cannot believe I waited til my last year of university to come here. My friends were always raving about it, but for some reason I never made it here til last Sunday. Anyhow, I am most definitely a fan of this place! In fact, I have eaten here twice within the last three days. Once for breakfast and another for lunch.
For breakfast I had a chilaquiles taco. Best taco in America? Hmm I wouldn't say so. I've had better chilaquiles elsewhere, but it certainly was delicious and FILLING. Oh-my-gosh the taco's are huge! One is enough, even if I am ravenous.
For lunch, I had a migas taco, which honestly to me was just okay, but still filling nonetheless.
I will be back again and again since it fits my college budget and is, like, 5 minutes away! -
Review from Mark H.
So good they named it twice! Well, whether they were making a point or got the idea while drinking and watching that old Little Caesars commercial, the tacos are truly good. If you're from out of town, this would be a neat "San Antonio" experience for you if you have the time. A note on time: for you home-gamers out there, this place was enjoyed by the locals until it was reviewed by Texas Monthly, the Food Network, etc. which explains why lately you can expect a wait at most times of the day and why you might need to park creatively (try E Ridgewood just behind the restaurant). But the tacos are good and they won't mind sharing so salud!
Some good standards are the Fiesta taco, Migas taco, shredded chicken taco, bean, egg & cheese taco, and the Taco Norteno which has steadily increased in price with its recent media coverage. Yes, the coffee is old-school, there might be a line, sodas come by the can, and you might have to remind your busy waitress to bring chips. But suck it up, it's a taco diner and it's really good. If you're pressed for time, get there early (or on a weekday) or bypass the line by calling in a to-go order. Also, groups larger than four are not an efficient idea.
As a patron of 6+ years, my suggestion to really enjoy this place is to stick to the tacos. I mean, that is the name of the place... -

Simply the best barbacoa meat you will ever taste. The chips are stale, the plates are not great, but when you take a bite into the barbacoa, none of that will even matter. FYI, the barbacoa taco is only available on Saturdays and Sundays. -

We were in San Antonio this past weekend for a friends wedding and upon arriving at our hotel, perused the "San Antonio" magazine in our room.
Hubby found a great review about a popular place called "Taco Taco" that had received rave reviews from Bon Appetit magazine as well as the Food Network. I'm usually quite skeptical about reviews in magazine (I much more trust my fellow yelpers!), but I have to say ... this place did NOT disappoint.
Located in a small building without any distinguishing characteristics, the line forms along the side of the building. At first we were thinking - "this better be worth waiting for" ... but after being seated quickly (I recommend going as a group of 2 cuz the wait is shorter) we were NOT disappointed!!
The tacos were tremendous (in fact we went back the next day on our way to Austin), the service was stellar ... and the salsa rocks. OH and the prices can't be beat. Seriously -- $11 for four tacos and 2 coffees?
Can someone PLEASE open a breakfast taco place in Portland? -

The tacos are good but not great - this place is seriously overrated. If you want the best breakfast tacos in town, try Lisa's Mexican Restaurant - the tortillas are thicker, the food is better, and you rarely have to wait in line.
P.S. I really HATE that Taco Taco serves it's fresh salsa in Styrofoam cups! Can you say "nonbiodegradable"?? As I already suggested to them on their website, why don't they just refill those tins cups they leave on the table w/ fresh salsa for every customer!! GRRR. -

I've definitely had better Mexican food and tacos for sure.
Granted the tortillas are devine! They are akin to Taco Cabana tacos, except larger.
I will definitely get breakfast if I'm ever in there again, especially since they are only open until 2 p.m. and breakfast is served the whole time. My party of six agreed that most of the items needed salt/seasoning, especially the salsa and lunch items.
The breakfast items ordered looked great. But, I'll pit Trudy's migas against anyones in the world!
Our waitress was super sweet and very patient with us first-timers. If you go to the restroom--you might want to wait until you find a port-a-potty. It will probably be the same type of cleanliness and about 100 degrees cooler!
Seating is a challenge. -

There is a reason why this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant plays up the reputation Food Network bestowed upon it as "The Best Tacos In America" simply because, well, it produces the best tacos in America. Homemade tortillas, savory salsa, and decent lunch-plate prices. But we all know the best kept secret here are the breakfast tacos. People will go out of their way in the rush-hour morning-traffic just to grab one. And who can blame them? Just typing about it makes me want one right now.
The only problem is the parking. Parking lot is smaller than the inside this diner-esque restaurant, and I've seen one too many traffic accidents as people blindly back out of the lot into the busy intersection of Hildebrand & McCullough (my advice is to always park behind it -- at the service station next door, or along the backstreet Ridgewood Ct)
