Yeah - it's not really Mexican - I'd call it Central American - Honduran and Salvadorian. The seasonings aren't really strong - and the presentation is cafe-esque. Pupusa is tasty - salad is the same on every meal - shredded lettuce with a house vinaigrette dumped on it.
The locals seem to respect it - it's typically full on a Friday/Saturday night - toddlers and screaming babies included. Service is not intentionally slow - but the poor girls are usually scrambling to handle all the customers - plus cultural rules hold - which means a slow tab.
I'd recommend it for a decent lunch stop if you ever find yourself in Maverick square - or off to the airport (you can get into Logan via the Jeffereson St entrance)- or if you're a wandering Eastie - there's not much over here in the line of small sit-down restaurants - so this will have to do.
Luv it, atmosphere zero, food 10. The Michalada (sp?) is terrific, the shrimp seveche (sp)? I loved, wish they could do this in Dorchester...probably not worth traveling for (because there are nicer places visually) but if I was already in Eastie, I'd be here. Huge menue.
Boy do I love tacos. If it weren't for the hubster, I would eat tacos every day of the week. So one night, when we didn't feel like cooking, we decided to head out to the taco mecca that is East Boston. So many choices! We decided on a pretty busy spot in central Eastie with taco in the name. On the menu there were indeed a few tacos (beef chicken pork and tongue,) but not enough varieties to name the place after the yummy foodstuff. Not to mention, it didn't seem to be super Mexican-y either.More Salvadorian, which is fine because pupusas are pretty yummy. So I settled for the carne asada which came with rice, beans, and salad. A large meal for a meager price. And it was pretty tasty. AND I thoroughly enjoyed the Hispanic version of MTV playing over the juke box in the corner.
Not my favorite spot, but I wouldn't be too upset to go back.
I knew i had to walk into this place some day.
I was craving some nachos!
In general, it's a Pretty cute place. Not very big, super clean, gives you
a nice "Hispanic" feeling.
The food...Only thing I've ever ordered is the beef nacho plate. ($8.00 and some change) not bad.
As a regular, I've had my good and bad days with taco mex.
The service is really speedy on weekdays, but as you know, weekends
may take a while.
The first time, the vegetables on my nacho plate were chopped fresh, and smelled great! The cheese was freshly melted, and the nachos were very crunchy. Nothing like the first time..eh?
You never know what to expect with their meals, sometimes they're good, and sometimes they're bad.
I remember One time when the nachos were quite stale and the cheese was pretty stiff... tasted like it had been sitting in the back for a while..I was pretty disgusted but didn't complain. After all, I still came back.. How could I not living right down the street..
and all.
I remember one waitress who was angry with me because I refused to tip her...(it's not my fault she gave such horrible service!)
her exact words, "I working for tips!"
Boo hoo miss lady !
and fired she got !
Sad story. but their nachos are the only thing that keep me coming back!
I cross my fingers every time!
This place was sort of unmemorable. I debated on whether to give it two or three stars but finally settled on two since three stars means I'd consider going back.
Between the two of us, the boy and I ordered a steak, a cheese papusa and a chicken taco. The chicken taco was good but nothing impressive. I randomly stumbled upon a place in Chicago where I got a chicken taco that was made the same way and it was eons better. The papusa was pretty good, but then, I've never had papusa before so there was nothing to compare it to. The steak was well flavored, actually pretty good, with a fajita veggie mix on top that was pretty decent. As others have mentioned, the food was a bit on the bland side, with the exception of the steak.
The dishes were humongous, and you definitely get your money's worth and then some. I'm glad we only ordered one main entree, as there was no way we could finish the two appetizers and entree we did have.
Also, every time we had a request, the waitresses were totally confused. And service was super slow for the amount of people that were there and the amount of service staff they had.
The service was decent. They had a plasma TV so we could watch TV.
I ordered the beef and onions dish. It was pretty greasy, not good tasting (way too salty), and not fulfilling. I was disappointed.
The waitresses are cute and wear revealing outfits. I was talking it over with the wifey and I commented how it looked like one waitress had her outfit "sewed" on.
How to get there? Street parking or Blue Line Maverick Station.
I came here randomly one night out of curiosity and spent some time looking over the menu. The selection I found to be rather plentiful, and since I am not well acquainted with the discrepancies between Mexican, or Central American cuisine, I just ordered what looked good to me. This happened to be the Carne Asada plate. It comes with a nicely sized sliver of steak, with vegetables on one side, and rice and beans on the other side. It was a pretty plain and simple meal. I ate every single thing on the plate, and would gladly do it again. The servers were generally polite, and the place looked clean and sanitary.
I really liked this place - while I'm a pescetarian and there weren't a ton of menu options for me to select from, I was sold on the place when I was served a 40 of Regia Extra from El Salvador - while I'm almost 30, this is actually the first time I have downed a 40 someplace other than behind a condemned building next to a dumpster. This is also the first time I've ever seen a 40 listed as a menu item! This experience, as well as the authenticity brought about by the locals, makes this a favorite spot in Maverick Sq.
Love the food there, always fresh and tasty.
Decent Mexican/Salvadorean food at a reasonable price. I especially like the tostones and pupusas. Friendly service. A little better than Taqueria Cancun. Not really worth a trip on the Blue Line, but a good option in Maverick Square.
This place is ok. I have been there a few times. Not the best, not the worst. I like Taqueria Cancun better which is in the same square. Whenever I go in this place I get leered at and it creeps me out. The mango juice with milk is really good. The food is average. I agree that it isnt really mexican, more central american, and the spices arent quite right.
The food is definitely ColOmbian.
