Refreshingly authentic taco stand (taqueria) in the midst of a state full of often and grossly overrated "ristorantes". This place reminds me most of taco stands in california: attractively dingy (read: authentic), diminutive hole-in-the-wall with good and reasonably priced food.
*price increase effective March 2008* Since the price increase, my favorite meal has been the 5 crispy rolled tacos (i.e. taquitos) with guacamole on top, for $3.50. Burritos are about $4. Tacos are about 2 dollars, with all being traditional "soft" style tacos except the beef (which is crispy, folded). The predominant meat is asada, not ground beef (which I did not expect to find in non-homemade mexican food ever till I moved to Tennessee). Also you can get shredded beef. Tortas are about $4 for the asada and less for the chicken or carnitas. The only thing I found lacking in the torta was queso fresco or sour cream. You *can* get sour cream or other extras for a small surcharge. There are also combinations, which may suite customers more familiar with oversized ristorante style platters heaping with cheap rice and beans.
Drinks include a normal self-serve soda fountain, or a far superior aguafrescas machine (yet not homemade like back home, but still better than soda). It has mix-made horchata, pineapple and melon and refills cost a dollar (as I think I understood from the spanish sign taped to the machine). But it seems like the place where you may convince them to let you pop over next door to the convenience market (Daily's) and get some jarritos!
Better yet, grab your burrito and drink to go and chomp outside. Anyway there's only three tables inside, so you may *have* to step out to enjoy "la comida" -- which will let you enjoy the weather, too!
Conveniently located next to a gas station! -

There's really nobody else in the area that does food like this. In San Diego.. places like this are a dime a dozen, but in a small town in TN where most mexican food comes in large restaurants and is often mediocre at best, this place makes me feel at home. I can always depend on Taco Express for mexican food I know and grew up on.

All I can say is that this place kindof caught me off guard. I've never really had mexican food that was genuinely good. It's strange how dives generally serve the best food. Maybe because it's what they know how to do best. Anyway the food is no-frills, no bows and ribbons, just well cooked food. The menu is pretty extensive and the prices are super affordable.

This place doesn't look like much, but the food is excellent. The food is authentic and reasonable, and has the flavor and quality of no other Mexican places I've dined. I go at least once a week and get a load of food for less than $20.

Review from Ben S.
Spring Hill, TN
I am so upset. I have lived in Spring Hill for almost 6 years and driven by here on almost a daily basis. After reading reviews I went directly and ordered their 5 rolled tacos and have been back almost every day since. They are amazing and authentic. Perfectly rolled with amazing guacamole and hot sauce. Get you hands on them now.
